Turn an old jewellery box into a gold treasure chest with a little bit of help from Resene.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 34

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, Old jewellery box, Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene testpots of Resene Magma and Resene Toffee, Paintbrush, Sandpaper, Small stick

To get the look: Mark painted the shelf with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Poppy.

Other ideas: For a fun pink effect paint the jewellery box with a basecoat of Resene Strikemaster and two topcoats of Resene Sugar N Spice.

Step 1

Lightly sand the jewellery box to ‘key’ the surface.
Step 2

Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 3

Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the jewellery box and allow to dry.
Step 4

Apply one coat of Resene Toffee to the jewellery box and allow to dry.
Step 5

Carefully stir the Resene Magma with a small stick.
Step 6
Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Magma to the jewellery box and allow to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply a second coat of Resene Magma to the jewellery box, this time dabbing the paint on to create a textured effect. Allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear to the jewellery box, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
