“Upon receiving my Resene colour, Scampi, I had three elements that combined as my inspiration. The first element being the symbolism of violet such as gentleness, imagination and peace. Drawing out of all this, I knew I wanted to show this in my design.
The song ‘Runaway’ by Aurora was my second element. It was in sync with how I imagined violet to be if it was a song, where this idea of running away clung to me the most.
This led me to my third element from back in the 1940s. Divorce rates soared up high after WWII, a reason for this being women wanted to have a say in their own destiny and having their own freedom. In turn, I wanted to represent the combination of the three elements as my inspiration in my vision for my design.
This vision of a young woman who is finally free to be whoever she was imagined herself to be. Not needing a man or anyone for that matter to be there as she is in peace on her own. She wants to feel free, to begin a new journey, to discover more with life and nothing is freer to her than running, running away to where she truly belongs.
I wanted to portray this vision within my design. The full A-line skirt showcasing the freedom this young woman has running, alongside the separate elongated split sleeves presenting gentleness in the way it moves. The top’s open back symbolises her leaving all her baggage and past behind her, while the front welcomes in her new beginning, her new journey. This look is gentle and free, all of which captures the inspiration from Resene Scampi.”
