“When I first saw my colour, I was unsure about the direction I wanted to go in. Colours similar to Resene Liquid Gold aren’t usually my first choice when I am shopping for clothing, but I saw this as a good challenge. I started thinking about what gold typically represents. Words like royalty, luxury and historical architecture popped into my mind initially, I then began to think how does liquid gold make you feel? Successful, powerful, strong?

I wanted to create a piece that represents how I have felt through my teenage years, which was quite the opposite to how this colour is typically used. I always put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed financially or academically and to stay strong physically or mentally. I became very good at maintaining a vibrant, happy exterior while I was cracking and crumbling on the inside from the pressure I put on myself to reach such unattainable goals that was detrimental to my wellbeing.

This is why I have chosen ‘Beautiful Decay’ as my theme and inspiration. I feel it is something many people can relate to at a point in their life.

It is only natural that we want to show the best version of ourselves to the outside world however much we may be struggling internally. It is about finding the balance of showing off the good but being honest and open with the people around you if you are not doing okay. It is a constant battle between trying to uphold the "perfect” image you have created for yourself and the cracks of your struggles starting to get bigger before ultimately leading you to crumble and decay.”
