Colour: Resene Adrenalin

“When I first received the colour for my Resene challenge I was quite thrown. I feel most at home with neutrals... quite the opposite to this unapologetically bold colour that was laid in front of me.

I felt uncomfortable and so shared this discomfort with my mother. It was her that reminded me of my childhood "Busy Room." A converted garage, vibrantly painted in this exact colour. This room was a childhood creative's fantasy. It had everything you could ever want for card making, sewing, painting, DIYing, or drawing. A room to play, to create art, to ”Imagine all the possibilities" and chase them without fear of failure. How could I dislike this colour when it was the backdrop of my childhood creativity. A childhood memory of being surrounded by a colour that represented freedom, optimism, and joy.

This has reminded of how lucky I was to have parents, friends and family care about my will to create. They were always ready to support my big ideas, and accepting of the discomfort that attempting such projects might entail. They were my support crew, even as much to have a small few proudly call themselves ‘Team Shariah’. They were the people to help me follow through ‘all of the possibilities’ in my creative journey, from a kid in my busy room, to my high school years supporting me finishing school and getting a dance teaching diploma at the same time, and even now from a distance while I challenge myself at Whitecliffe.

I wanted to create a garment that showed the concept of having a support system like I have. The feeling of being a creative with big feelings and ideas, and having a support system to ‘Imagine the possibilities’ of how far I can go in this creative field in New Zealand.”
