"Welcome by Resene is a beautiful rich blue/green colour that captures the eye with its dark intensity. When I found out I would be using this colour I knew I would be in for an exciting challenge. As an individual my personal aesthetic is typically dark colours and baggy, layered silhouettes, so when I saw this colour, I knew I could take aspects from my own aesthetic as well as drawing out things from nature and my childhood imagination to create my design.
My goal with my design was to create a kind of ethereal gothic look that also embodies the nostalgic journey into the realm of childhood wonder and the depths of the forest, inspired by the vivid hues of nature that resemble the colour I was given. I also wanted to take inspiration from the different textures you would see and touch when in a forest. After some research and a lot of experimentation I decided to use pintucking pleats on the corset to represent a similar sort of texture that you would see on a tree trunk. For the skirt I decided on a flared floor-length skirt as I wanted to keep it simple and elegant to tie the look together.
With my design I hoped to intertwine the essence of childhood imagination with the serenity and beauty of the forest, creating a garment that is both enchanting and grounded in natural aesthetics and made by the grown up version of a girl who used to love playing in the garden and imagining she was a fairy in an enchanted forest."
