“Resene Arriba reminded me of autumn leaves that are a deep blend of brown and red, but in my opinion the colour looks rather more red than it appears. My initial thoughts about Resene Arriba is it lacked its vibrancy unlike the other colours featured this year, but a unique point that stood out to me is it’s strong in its colour. For me it represents a colour of strength, grounding and contentment.
So, I was drawn to constructing a garment that resembled a structure, inspired by the marae, the under bust seam represents the roof top. Along with a gathered skirt to symbolise the significance of the marae as a meeting/gathering house. The puff sleeves are reminiscent of the clouds that are above the marae as a layer of protection.
Growing up as a kid in Aotearoa, Resene Arriba is a colour quite fond to me and reminded me of my primary school uniform colour. Moving from Wellington to Auckland at a young age, starting a new primary school was a tough transition, it marked the start of a new chapter growing up in Auckland instead. To my design, I’ve added a collar and placket to depict this fond memory growing up in Aotearoa.”
