Colour: Resene Valour

Resene Valour

“The main theme for my design was the Disney movie – Mulan.  Set in China during the Northern Wei Dynasty it follows the story of a woman who only wants to bring honour to her family but does not fit in with the standards of the time.  Where her old and injured father is summoned to serve in the war, she shows great courage and determination by secretly going against her family, tradition and the law to take his place.  Dressing up as a boy she serves in the army, training with other men with the risk of getting caught.  With her bravery and smart thinking she triumphs over her enemies and brings her family honour.

I am always inspired by different Asian cultures so when I got the paint colour Resene Valour, I thought that the most fitting character was Mulan. She has an abundance of valour but also brings the element of Chinese culture with her.  I used dragons, armour and origami as a starting point in my design and then developed it into a modern dress with a subtle oriental feel.

The dress is covered with a layer of woven-looking straps, with a fortune cookie shape on the side.”
