Q. I have a large lounge/dining area-open plan-with wooden timber windows plus some walls. My goal is to lighten the rooms with ceiling and wall paint. I will be laying a brown toned carpet. I am thinking of a white ceiling and off white walls. A. The following colours may be just what you are looking for – Resene Quarter Blanc, Resene White Linen, Resene Quarter Albescent White, Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream or Resene Merino. They are all quite different to each other. In order to see the unique undertones of colour I recommend you pop into your nearest Resene ColorShop to view the large A4 colour swatches in the colour library. If you view them with a true white – i.e. Resene White – and some possible carpet colours it may make choosing a wall colour much easier. January 2020 |

Q. We have particle board flooring which joins matai hardwood in one of our rooms (due to an extension that was done at a later date). I want to paint over the particle board flooring with Resene Walk-on – we attempted to stain the particle board but it doesn't look good. The walls in the room are painted with Resene Rice Cake and the trims are done in Resene Alabaster. The matai floorboards have been kept light and finished with Resene Qristal Clear satin urethane. I was thinking either a bluey grey or a 'greige'/taupe type colour. Do you have any suggestions for a colour that would go with the walls, and would not be too in your face yet not washed out? A. Try these colours and see if they suit – Resene Raven, Resene Mako, Resene Triple Truffle or Resene Pravda. January 2020 |

Q. We are building a new home in Cromwell. It is LINEA® board. We have a FlaxPod coloured roof as well as aluminium joinery. Any ideas for colour combinations to go with the roof and joinery? We quite like Resene Half Masala but think it might be too dark! A. I don't think Resene Half Masala would be too dark but if you are a bit nervous then the following colours may give you a few other options to consider – Resene Quarter Masala, Resene Double Friar Grey, Resene Taupe Grey or Resene Double Pravda. It is only by comparing colours that our eyes picks up the underlying tints and tones of a colour. On the exterior colours often look lighter/brighter because of the way natural light strips back the depth of a colour. If you are testing colours I recommend that you paint up all of a testpot (two coats) on an A2 size card leaving a narrow unpainted border all around the perimeter. The unpainted border helps your eyes focus on the colour. The card can be moved around the exterior so that you can see how it responds to different aspects – N/S/E/W – and that will help you see the reality of a colour. January 2020 |

Q. I'm looking to paint the exterior of my house but am a bit stuck on what colour to go with. The house has brown aluminium joinery and a green roof (not exactly sure of shade as seems lighter than Karaka but that may just be because it has faded over time). I love all things grey but am worried a grey would just add another colour and potentially clash with the joinery and roof. Heading down the more neutral route I had been thinking Resene Thorndon Cream but I've had mixed opinions on this. I don't like anything brown or yellow. A. I think if you checked out the following colours and compared them with Resene Thorndon Cream it may assist you to make a decision – Resene Quill Grey, Resene Triple Merino or Resene Quarter Taupe Grey. These colours do have a grey undertone which may work with the brown windows and the green roof. January 2020 |

Q. I’m looking for advice for exterior colours. Our house is a 1989 fibre cement clad house – currently a dark terracotta with very dark green trim, a Brunswick Green roof and bronze aluminium windows. I’m thinking we might go lighter – perhaps a light grey or light smoky green. We are happy to paint the trim but won’t be repainting the roof for a while. Any suggestions to help us modernise a little? A. Do you want the new house colour to co-ordinate well with the green roof and bronze windows? It is hard to ignore these colours on the house if you don't plan on changing them. I am not 100% sure that a light grey or smoky green would work with what you have. I have had a few thoughts about what might work with the bronze and the green. You might like to check them out to see if they appeal to you – try Resene Greige, Resene Napa, Resene Half Pravda, Resene Double Ash, Resene Tapa, Resene Taupe Grey or Resene Ravine. January 2020 |

Q. I have a 1986 house on lifestyle block with decorative weatherboards. It has a high pitched roof, two normal sized garage doors, stucco round the bay window in the lounge and the aluminium windows are very dark brown. The house is currently white. The roof, garage doors and wooden deck railing is ugly brown. I would like to keep the house a white colour but the roof etc perhaps a dark grey or black colour. I am looking to get new garage doors. A. Your colour choices for the COLORSTEEL® roof and garage doors may be limited a bit if you are wanting to integrate the dark brown windows harmoniously. The following are a few colours that may work for you – COLORSTEEL® Ironsand, FlaxPod or TernStyle. If you want to maintain the white main colour you might consider using a slightly tinted white so it is still a clean/crisp statement but not too stark – try Resene Double Alabaster or Resene Black White. Q. I have a copper theme on the exterior of my home. The spouting is all going to Marley copper-coloured spouting and downpipes. I have cedar weatherboard, deck balustrades in a walnut colour and I'm looking for inspiration for an exterior colour to paint the whole exterior of the house to complement with the copper spouting and cedar weatherboards. I had an idea to do a version of White Pointer, but am undecided. Can you suggest any other colour ideas please? A. Q. We are just about to build a house with rendering and boards. I would like a two tone colour that would suit a Monument roof. I quite like the Resene Tea colour. A. You might check out the following colours as they are related tonally which would provide you with a two tone scheme – try Resene Tea and Resene Triple Tea, or Resene Half Napa and Resene Double Napa. Because Monument is very dark charcoal grey you might also look at using greyer colours – try Resene Half Jumbo with Resene Quarter Bokara Grey. January 2020 |

Q. I want to paint the second storey front and rear of my house. The roof is red, not my favourite but it is in good nick and prohibitive to paint. The bottom is green Summerhill stone. The top half is currently a hideous brown board and the bottom window trims are mustard and white. I am looking for a way to tie the whole house together. A. It can be difficult with all the various and unrelated elements that are on the house to achieve a cohesive look. Are you considering painting over all the Summerhill Stone? That would be one way to get the stone and the second storey to be better co-ordinated. If not then it is important to work with the existing stonework. One of the following may look quite good – greens always look good with reds. Try Resene Ravine and Resene Spanish Green. The wooden windows and sills could all be the same colour - not a pure white as that may look a wee bit stark – but a warmer white perhaps. One of these white colours would work – Resene Quarter Rice Cake or Resene Double Alabaster. The dark bronze window joinery can be painted after carefully clean down and special preparation to match the wooden window frames – if you wanted to. January 2020 |

Q. I was hoping you could please help. I'm redecorating a small double bedroom to be an art room/chill out type room. I bought an olive green couch and now want to decide on colours for the walls and ceiling. The wall behind the couch will be a feature wall. I went into the Kapiti Resene ColorShop today and colour matched the couch with their larger swatches and can tell you the colour of the couch is like Resene Saratoga. Of the listed complementary colours I do like Resene Elephant and think that could be a good colour for the feature wall. However, when picking colours for the other three walls I'm a bit stuck. I was hoping to paint it a lighter blue that would go with everything. Do you have any suggestions? Can you also tell me if there are other complementary colours to Resene Saratoga that are not listed? A. Think carefully about the quality of natural light that presents in the room. If it is a shadowy room (east facing) or a cooler aspect (south facing) the lighter blue may feel chilly. A pale blue that may appeal to you is Resene Slipstream, or a slightly deeper blue that may also work is Resene Half Eskimo. The first blue has a subtle undertone of nearly green hiding in it so it can look warmer than the second colour which is a bit powdery/muted and may pick up a grey undertone. If you carefully test the blues and find that they just don't want to work well for you then a warm neutral may work to add more contrast to the Resene Elephant and the olive green of the sofa – you could try Resene Double Rice Cake or Resene Half Cararra. Q. We want to paint two of our bathrooms which have light terracotta colour tiles (mid orange colour), white cabinetry and quite large rooms. We are thinking of a grey with white trim. We’re open to other suggestions if not grey. Which greys would you recommend? We are stuck with the tiles as they too expensive to replace as they are throughout different parts of the house. A. I think you’re definitely on the right track with using a grey, it will tone in nicely with the terracotta tiles. You could try Resene Half Silver Chalice, Resene Half Foggy Grey or Resene Double Concrete. January 2020 |

Q. I am looking for advice on a good colour to paint three bedrooms. My lounge, kitchen and hallway are all Resene Quarter Tea and the bedrooms come off the hallway. Which would be some good colours that go well with Resene Quarter Tea that are suitable for bedrooms. Looking for light, airy, modern. Not looking for anything yellow. A. Q. We have sampled Resene Bali Hai for the exterior of our bungalow and find the colour looks a bit bleached out. Could we get a darker colour? A. The sun tends to make colours look lighter when used outside. We do have many other blues available – you could try Resene Bermuda Grey or Resene Escapade. January 2020 |

Q. We are painting a friend’s house with Resene Bastille on the front, a cement board entry wall and cement board above the windows. We want to paint the brick white. Which white would be the best companion for Resene Bastille? A. Two good options to try are Resene Sea Fog or Resene Wan White. January 2020 |

Q. Our house is south facing and doesn't get a huge amount of sun. I have read that we should be using warmer whites to warm our rooms up. But we love grey tones and are using them in other areas of the house, for example on our kitchen bench (superwhite granite) and our carpet (dark grey). I love Resene Double Sea Fog as a colour for our interior walls but I think it will be too cold and wonder if you can recommend something that will work with grey but still warm a room. A. I actually think Resene Double Sea Fog could work quite nicely. It's not stark and has a little bit of ochre tinter in it so it isn't really a cold off white. You could also try Resene White Pointer and Resene Quarter Foggy Grey and compare them with Resene Double Sea Fog to see what you prefer. January 2020 |

Q. I have a new home to be built. The roof and exterior joinery is likely to be Ironsand in colour. The wall cladding will be a Resene construction masonry overlay system. What's the best matching colour for the walls? A. A matching colour to Ironsand would be exactly the same colour or perhaps slightly lighter variants. They may be a little too dark. However there are quite a few colours that harmonise and co-ordinate well with Ironsand that are much lighter but very smart and contemporary looking. You might check out the following colours to see if they appeal to you – Resene Napa, Resene Double Tea, Resene Double Fossil, Resene Double Thorndon Cream, Resene Quarter Stonehenge or Resene White Pointer. There are many others also but these are a good start point. January 2020 |

Q. We are in need of some help with a colour for our new batten fence (not see-through) and want it to complement the current weatherboards/windows/roof colour combo. Stain is out as the fence has been primed and undercoated. The house is 1890-1900s cottage/villa with the roof in Resene Element, weatherboards in Resene Concrete and window joinery in Resene Quarter Alabaster. A. If you would like a dark colour on the fence, you could try Resene Element or Resene Windswept. But if you would prefer a lighter colour – more related to the main colour on your house – then this colour may be appealing to you – Resene Triple Concrete. Resene Concrete – both lighter variants and the one I have suggested do throw a warm lilac undertone. January 2020 |

Q. I am just after a bit of colour advice for the exterior of my house. We have been looking at either Resene Duck Egg Blue and Resene Titania or Resene Athens Grey for weatherboards and Resene Black White for joinery. A. Any of the colours that you have mentioned would look very nice on the weatherboards with the white for the joinery. It is very much your choice. However all colours look lighter on an exterior because of the way the bright natural light strips back the depth of the colour. I recommend that you carefully test the colours by painting up all of the testpots, two coats, onto very large A2 card and moving them around the exterior of the house so that you can see how they alter in natural light throughout the day. But there will be times during the day when the difference/contrast between the main house colour, whichever you choose, and the trim – Resene Black White – won't be very apparent. If you wanted the joinery to look lighter/whiter and see if more as a definite contrast then you might consider using Resene Half Black White or even Resene Quarter Black White. January 2020 |

Q. I am going to replace my flooring in the kitchen and living areas with a darkish brown oak. Which colour should I use for the kitchen cupboards, benchtops and the walls? A. I recommend that you consider carefully what types of colours you favour. Most any colour would work well with a darkish brown oak flooring. But you should at least gather some samples of bench top options that you really like as there is a lot less of them to choose from compared to paint. If you have no preferences at all then the following colours may be a start point for you to consider – Resene Alabaster – kitchen cabinets with Resene White Pointer – walls, or Resene Half Thorndon Cream – kitchen cabinets with Resene Half Tea – walls. Q. I am going to whitewash a Lockwood. I want white ceilings but which white to use that is soft? The ceiling is extremely high and I want the walls to be a different colour to get a Cape Cod look. A. If you are using Resene Colorwood Whitewash on the Lockwood walls – which looks really nice and gives a warm light white look to the varnished wooden walls – you might try one of the following whites on the ceiling – Resene Double Alabaster or Resene Half Bianca. Q. We are planning to paint the living areas of a 1950s renovated weatherboard home in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream. This is to show eclectic artworks and black and white photo art against. I need suggestions for the ceiling colour and also little skinny architraves. Other accent colours will be red, black, rimu timber and gold, mirrors etc. The kitchen unit is a deep blue at the moment. A. Unless you really want to highlight the skinny architraves I suggest you might like to paint them to match the wall colour so they blend in. You could do them in a semi-gloss water based enamel – Resene Lustacryl – as it is easier to clean than a standard low sheen wall paint. The ceilings could be the same as the wall colour in a matt finish acrylic paint as the walls are very 'white'. But if you would prefer a bit of contrast then a standard white – Resene White – would also work for you. January 2020 |

Q. My husband and I have taken the carpet up in the hallway and now we would like to paint the floor as it’s MDF. We have painted the walls Resene Merino and the ceiling is Resene Alabaster we also have dark wooden trim. It is quite a dark hallway so going a white I think would be best, just not sure which is the best white. A. If you wanted a lighter/whiter colour than the walls - but not as white as the ceiling – you could consider one of the following colours – Resene Half Merino or Resene Half Sea Fog. But if you wanted a white that was slightly deeper than the wall colour then one of these may appeal to you – Resene Double Merino, Resene Triple Merino, Resene Double Sea Fog or Resene Triple Sea Fog. Q. We have purchased a 1970s red brick house that has panels of yellow and we want to paint over the yellow panel to be a shade of grey to make it look more modern but are unsure if we should go with a lighter grey or darker grey. I would love your opinion on which colour would look best next to the red bricks and alongside the white trim. A. I think a deeper mid toned grey may look better than one that is too light. One of the following greys may appeal to you – Resene Armadillo, Resene Half Baltic Sea, Resene Half Fuscous Grey, Resene Gravel, Resene Eighth Bokara Grey or Resene Grey Friars. They are all quite different to each other and have unique undertones of colour in them. I recommend that you either use Resene Lumbersider low sheen waterborne paint if you don't want too shiny a finish or – alternatively – if you do want a bit more sheen then Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss may appeal to you. Q. I’m after advice on a paint colour for the guttering and soffits. Currently they are a dark blue/grey. The house is being painted Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream. It's a Mediterranean style house with an orange roof. We are also looking to paint the roof. I'd like to move away from orange, but my husband would like to keep it. A. If the terracotta tile roof is not going to be painted then you might use a deeper version of the house colour for the guttering, down pipes and fascias – try Resene Thorndon Cream. This is the default choice – it is not too much of a colour so it won't attract a lot of attention but it is very well balanced and harmonious. If want something more distinctive then perhaps it is about relating the colour to a new roof colour. You could try Resene Quarter Ironsand with Resene Ironsand for the roof, Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey with Resene Fuscous Grey for the roof, Resene Quarter Bokara Grey with Resene Bokara Grey for the roof, or Resene Mother Nature with Resene Family Tree for the roof. Q. My 1970s fibre cement house needs new paint outside. I have fully renovated it inside, now I'd like to get a more modern look outside. The anodised bronze windows and red-brownish concrete tiles roof will stay as they are. I would like to paint the rest of the outside. There's a green hedge and other plants at the front, trees around, and also there will be plenty of timber structures outdoors (two decks, front gate, fences, etc) that I'd like to stain to keep the natural wood look. Could you please recommend a colour scheme for that house that would match the existing joinery and roof colours? I guess I need a main colour for the fibre cement boards, something darker for the basement and concrete porch and something for the eaves and barge boards? It's a rental, so I'd like neutral colours for a wider appeal. A. I am inclined to agree with you in regard neutral colours relating to the joinery – I think a new scheme with a little depth will be very smart. One of these colour palettes may appeal to you – Option 1 – Resene Half Bison Hide as the main colour with Resene Triple Bison Hide for the base of the house, steps and porch, Resene Woodsman Dark Oak for all timber structures and Resene Quarter Rice Cake for the soffits, guttering and fascias. Option 2 – Resene Eighth Napa as the main colour with Resene Napa for the base of the house, steps and porch, Resene Woodsman Iroko for all timber structures and Resene Black White for the soffits, guttering and fascias. Q. We are looking for a dark exterior colour to complement our New Denim Blue window and door frames. What would you suggest? A. Were you thinking about a blue/grey with deep undertone – similar to your windows and doors? Q. We are re-cladding our bach using James Hardie EasyLap panels and Abodo Vulcan Cladding in Patina finish. We are searching for a suitable colour to paint the EasyLap, in a colour that is complementary to the Vulcan Patina. We have new matt Grey Friars aluminium window and door frames and an existing COLORSTEEL® New Denim Blue roof. We are thinking we would like a colour darker than the Vulcan Patina but lighter than the Grey Friars joinery. The Abodo Vulcan cladding will be on a few feature parts of the exterior but the majority of the exterior will be clad in the James Hardie EasyLap. A. Have you looked at the lighter shades of Grey Friars which would tone well with your new joinery? You may or may not know but Resene has lighter options available of this colour. You could try Resene Quarter Grey Friars. Or try Resene Double Stack or Resene Raven as other options. January 2020 |

Q. We are painting the exterior of our 1970’s home. We like the way dark colours look against our aluminium window frames which are a browny/khaki green/coppery colour (depending on the light). We like the colour Resene Baltic Sea, but is there a shade lighter than the Resene Half Baltic Sea? Our house is two storeys and we would like to do the bottom level a couple of shades lighter than the top storey. Which colour would you recommend that would go well with Resene Baltic Sea and is slightly lighter than Resene Half Baltic Sea? A. Resene Baltic Sea is such a lovely colour, you've made a good choice. There is a lighter version available – Resene Quarter Baltic Sea which may be what you are after. If that's not quite right then another option you could look at is Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey. January 2020 |

Q. Currently we have Resene Eighth Taupe Grey in our open plan living area. The back wall doesn’t get much light and the taupe grey is too dark. Could you suggest a colour with the same tone as the taupe grey but one or two shades lighter that will reflect the light? A. Q. I’m doing up a master bedroom with Resene Quarter Alabaster trims and ceiling. I am looking at doing Resene Half Iron on walls and thinking of doing a feature wall. Should I go with Resene Iron or which other colour would go well? A. You could do Resene Iron as your feature wall if you want something subtle but I would suggest going a little bit darker if you want more of a noticeable difference. Q. I am painting my house which is a 1950s stucco with some kind of coating that has been applied over the top. The current colour is a bit nondescript and I am thinking of a more definite shade of grey (but not the kind of grey that looks blue from a distance and not too dark) or possibly brown-grey, with a white/cream trim on the roof surround and the upstairs window surrounds. It has zinc aluminium cladding on one side which I am not planning to paint. Could you suggest some potential colours that might work well? A. The following greys may be of interest to you. None of them have any element of blue in their undertones and are light to mid toned colours. They do carry undertones of colour in them – all greys do and some are very complex and alter a lot throughout the daylight hours. Try Resene Eighth Friar Grey, Resene Atmosphere, Resene Silver Chalice or Resene Half Foggy Grey. Q. My main house colour is Resene Triple Ash. The windows are brown aluminium. I don't want a brown trim, but was thinking of a dark green/black. A. I would probably lean towards a black or very dark grey as opposed to a dark green. Try Resene Bokara Grey or Resene Blackjack. January 2020 |

Q. I would like a colour suggestion for my ensuite. The bedroom and cabinets in the bathroom are Resene Craigieburn. The ceiling/door/window trims are Resene Alabaster. The walls are currently Resene Half Wheatfield. They are more yellowish than I would like. The flooring is a marble like tile... with a muted soft slightly sludgey grey pattern. A. Q. I have a very large 112 year old single storey red brick house with white detailing. My red decramastic tile roof which is quite dominant, needs recoating and I am trying to decide what colour to use. My current thinking is perhaps a dark grey. A. I think you are definitely on the right track with going with a dark roof, they look really good with red bricks. Here following are a couple of options for you to try: Resene Element or Resene Nocturnal. Q. We have just bought a unit which is north facing with a balcony and the back also has a small balcony which faces the south. These are the only sources of light. The unit is quite dark in the middle where the kitchen is. One bedroom opens on to the north facing balcony and the other two receive light from the south. Which would be the best Resene white to use to brighten the unit? The floors will be a light oak and there will be light wooden furniture in the unit. A. Q. I am hoping you can provide advice on various colour options for painting the walls of our 1950s (I think Stucco) house. The house is in a rural area surrounded by farmland and tussock land. We are renovating piece meal and learning as we go. We have put in new windows and a roof (and fascia boards) in Grey Friars. We have also put in new soffits and a porch area (Shadowclad stained with a light yellow finish. Now I am struggling to choose an exterior wall colour. I love colour but feel we have probably brought that through in the porch and soffits. I'm not so keen on grey walls... many of the houses are grey in the village, it is so drab! But I will take your guidance and am open to suggestions on that. The existing colour is a creamy yellow – I am not so keen on that either. I love strong yellows but not creamy muted yellows. We get a lot of dust here, so that is a consideration... white white may look filthy but we also get full sun so too dark could be an issue too. I have considered lighter colour on the walls and a mad bright red or blue front door... any thoughts on that? I like the limewash look, but am not sure what colours would be similar. Or perhaps a green tint given the surroundings. I am just immensely confused and open to any suggestions. A. Grey is used a lot these days – it is trend related. But there are any number of other options available. I think a neutral with a bit of personality may look good with your Grey Friars roof and joinery and the stain. You could check out the following colours to see if they appeal to you – Resene Triple Black White, Resene Thorndon Cream or Resene Quarter Craigieburn, or a yellow – because you said you liked yellow – Resene Colonial White (this is a lot more yellow than its name implies). Q. We are painting our exterior Resene Triple Sea Fog. What would you recommend as a good complementary colour for the roof and fascia? A. Q. I'm re-roofing and repainting my house. It’s a 60s bungalow with timber weatherboards and windows. There is a brick base. I'm going to re-roof it with COLORSTEEL® Grey Friars and I want to keep the windows white (say Resene Double Alabaster). I need a colour for the weatherboards, but don't want to go too dark. Q. What’s the difference between Resene Porter and Resene Element? Am I right that both are basically black with green undertones? I'm painting my formal lounge and this is a contrast on the fireplace/hearth to the walls which are off- white (warm). A. They are both near blacks, Resene Porter is a bit lighter though. I wouldn't suggest they have a green undertone, perhaps a very subtle brown undertone but again more so in Resene Porter than Resene Element. Colours do reflect off each other though so if you have tried them at home near some other green tones they could be reflecting that. Q. We are thinking of painting our living room Resene New Denim Blue with a Resene Merino ceiling and skirting/window frames. Do you think this will work? I love that you are thinking of doing something with a bit of depth. Resene New Denim Blue is a really nice colour, I think this will look great. In terms of Resene Merino though, because it is going on a ceiling I would perhaps suggest doing something slightly lighter. Q. Our house is wood on a concrete foundation. The foundation is Resene Bokara Grey and the wood stain is Resene Pitch Black. Q. I am in the process of building a tiny home. I have chosen black window frames, gutters and downpipes but am really unsure of which colour to paint the outside cladding. It can’t be stain. Q. I’ve suggested to my client to use the colour Resene Bastille for exterior front doors, trims, windows, posts on verandas and other exteriors of a house with timber cladding. This is approx. one third to a half of the house’s external wall surface (not the roof). The rest is a brick with a wet sandy base tone and a speckle of the Bastille colour and dark rust in the brick. We are using Resene Double Alabaster for eaves and I'm now looking for a dark paint colour for the decks and struggling. They are already painted and the client doesn't not want to sand them back etc and just wants a repaint. They are currently a maroon/red (awful). A light colour would be a problem as they are backing into the bush and there is lots of dust, birds and leaves etc. So a dark colour was my only option re maintenance. But I’m struggling with a colour. I was thinking another blue perhaps. A. Even though Resene Bastille is colour coded as a B for blue it does have a lot of black and purple in it. Sometimes the purple is obvious – especially in the low westerly sun. A colour for the deck needs to associate well with Resene Bastille but not be too blue/purple in tone. The following are options that may appeal – Resene Half Shark or Resene Tuna. I do recommend that large samples be painted up using all of the testpot and laid on the deck to get the best idea of how each colour looks throughout the day. Walking on the swatches would also show how much muddy foot traffic would show. I recommend you use the CoolColour version to reflect more heat, both for the sake of the timber and bare feet. Q. Can you please suggest some colour options for the exterior of our plastered, concrete block house? Currently it has one coat of Resene Half Iron but I feel like it is too white looking. I'm a little bit lost as to what alternatives to look at. Right now the house really sticks out on the hill side and I'd like it to blend in more. Our roof colour is called Max Ebony which is black and our garage door will be matched the same. I do like greys but am also interested in looking at some earthy tones. On an exterior very bright natural light tends to strip back a colour and make it look lighter/brighter – often by half. You have already seen this happening with the existing colour. Q. I want guidance on which blues to paint a games room/bedsit. It has a Rimu staircase one end, stained dark wood panelling on the lower half of two walls, two Rimu and glass exterior doors and a Rimu kitchen bench. It doesn't get too much natural light (we will be improving the lighting) and it has a wooden pool table in it. The carpet will be replaced to a grey colour (not sure which). I own a two storeyed Victorian cottage circa 1866 that I’ve begun planting a cottage garden around and now need exterior paint colours that work with this type of garden (it’s pinks, purples, blues and whites). Q. Trying to choose an exterior colour for a weatherboard house. It was originally yellow. I tried Resene Craigieburn, but it’s too brown. I like Resene Edward, but now am leaning more towards a warm white which is not glary and too bright in the Northland sun. The windows are matt Titania and the roof is Sandstone Grey. We are surrounded by bush and lots of tree ferns. I also want to plant more Pohutukawas and Nikau palms. Will be covered decks on both sides. A. Will you mind if a warm white clashes a bit with Titania which is a yellow/grey which can look a little bit greenish in some lights? If not then the following may appeal to you – Resene Villa White or Resene Half Pearl Lusta. But you might also check these colours – they are a little more definite and may make your eye see Titania as a much paler neutral – Resene Linen, Resene Triple Thorndon Cream, Resene Grey Area or Resene Copyrite. Q. I want advice on two colours: one for a bathroom which is west facing and gets lots of sun (we live in Hawke’s Bay), the second is for a hallway which is light at the beginning but dark at the end near the toilet. I’m looking for two colours that will complement the tones of our existing colours which are: Resene Double Delta, Resene Foggy Grey and Resene Half Foggy Grey. I had been looking at Resene Helix for the hallway. And maybe Resene Peace (although it seems very green!) for the bathroom. Wondering whether I should also look at Resene Ash? A. Resene Helix would look great in a hallway. Another colour very similar to this that you may also like is Resene Half Washed Green. I know what you mean about Resene Peace, it is quite green. Resene Ash could work but is definitely more of a soft grey. It might be nice to have something with a subtle hint of colour. I would recommend trying Resene Half Inside Back, it's similar to Resene Peace but with a little less green and more of a grey edge to it. It's a really beautiful colour. January 2020 |
