Q. I am choosing internal paint colours for a new build and I am looking at using Resene Half White Pointer for walls and Resene Quarter White Pointer (gloss finish) for door frames and (high gloss finish) for skirting boards. I'm unsure if the frames and skirting boards should be lighter, darker or the same colour as the walls?

A. I think it all depends upon whether they are minimal [not worth highlighting] then you might use a semi-gloss or high gloss enamel version of the wall colour - the sheen being the only difference - not the colour. Some people think it is the law to emphasise in some way all the wood work in a house - it isn't - it is a personal preference.

However if the woodwork is gorgeous - older villas often have ornate skirtings, architraves and doors - then highlighting it in a much lighter or darker colour than the walls makes an eye catching feature of it.

Q. We have been in our house two years and I just don't like my weatherboard paint colour. We have light brown bricks, Silver Pearl joinery and garage door and weatherboards in Resene Half Gargoyle at the front of the house. The Gargoyle colour looks pinkish too me. We thought using a greyish tone paint to match the joinery may be better.

A. You might look at these greys - they look very nice with the Silver Pearl joinery - Resene Atmosphere, Resene Delta or Resene Silver Chalice.

You may need a grey with more brown in it instead of a grey that picks up the yellow/grey of the joinery.

Q. I have doors, skirting, windowsills and kitchen cabinetry all in Resene Half Spanish White and the carpet is a soft charcoal. My colour question is, do you think either Resene Half Tea or Resene Half Truffle is a complementary colour choice for the walls? I'm trying to modernise the feeling of a 1980s home.

A. If you are trying to modernise the house you may have to consider changing the very definite rich cream coloured woodwork in order to be able to work another colour into the interior scheme. It dominates and controls what might be used with it. If that is not an option then I suggest you use slightly deeper toned colours so your eye is fooled into thinking the Resene Half Spanish White is lighter than it really is.

So with that thought in mind you might look at these colours - Resene Tea, Resene Truffle or Resene Eighth Stonehenge.

If the woodwork and kitchen cabinetry were a much lighter/whiter less yellow colour - i.e. Resene Quarter Albescent White or Resene Half Sea Fog, your original colour choices listed in your query would work really well - or any other modern neutral for that matter.

Q. The house is now 20 years old and I would like to repaint and modernise the exterior, particularly the roof colour. I have New Denim Blue joinery which has slightly faded and painted bargeboards in the same colour around the house. The roof painter, who is painting quite a few houses around ours, has suggested Grey Friars, as it works in with the New Denim Blue joinery.

A. You might check out these colours - Resene Grey Friars (roof - deeper/greyer but still with an undertone of blue). This is a nice classical charcoal that goes with any other main house colour. I would be inclined to use it for the bargeboards as well as the roof.

Or Resene Nocturnal (roof - a darker charcoal), Resene Biscotti (a warm neutral that relates well to the colours used in the interior), Resene Quarter Spanish White - for the bargeboards if a lighter colour was required - this relates to the interior trim colours, or Resene Half Tuna - if you wanted a colour similar to the window joinery so they weren't the only blue/grey on the house.

Q. We want to paint the weatherboards Resene Silver Chalice but are not sure which colour to choose for the joinery. We were thinking Arctic White but then we have a hard time finding colours for walls and architrave that work with the Arctic White.

A. I do have to agree with you about Arctic White - it is so blue it makes real white look warm by comparison.

Usually in regard to powder coated joinery there are only a few options to choose from but perhaps you could consider using Appliance White or Pearl White. These whites allow a lot more colours to be used with them.

Q. Our 1958 house is Resene White (that is, no tint added to the base white) weatherboard on a concrete basement. It has ornate black metal rails and a board fence. We are replacing the concrete tile roof with COLORSTEEL®. Do you have any thoughts on Windsor Grey vs Slate vs Ironsand? The gardens are dominant and mature (phoenix palm, pohutakawas, camellia and natives).

A. A colour for the roof is about whether the COLORSTEEL® colour is deep warm grey (Slate), a deeper shade (Windsor Grey) or a warm olive brown based charcoal (Ironsand). Any colour would work.

Are you able to view real powder coated metal samples - not a brochure or a computer representation of the colours? That may make it easier for you to decide. The roof colour will be seen on a 45 degree angle to the sunlight so you do have to hold the metal samples at that angle to see how much the sunlight alters your perception of the colour.

If you have black metal rails you might look at using Ebony - as this is the blackest colour in that range.

Q. What is a good white to use in a bathroom? We are tiling halfway up the wall in white gloss subway tiles and using charcoal tiles on the floor. We are after a white for painting the walls above the tiles, and then a white suitable for the window sills and the back of the door as well as the ceiling. The rest of our house will be painted in Resene Rice Cake but I'm not sure if this colour would work in a white tiled bathroom?

A. You are possibly right in thinking that your main house colour - Resene Rice Cake - may not work well for you in the bathroom - it may pick up too much yellow/green undertone compared to the white subway tiles.

If you painted the ceiling, the window sills and the back of the door in (real) white - Resene White that would be a perfect foil for the tiles and any other ceramic bathroom fittings - i.e vanity basin, bath, shower etc.

The walls could be in a slightly greyer toned white on the walls - so it appears more 'coloured' than the other whites in the room - and therefore less likely to vie for the 'whitest/best' match - Resene Sea Fog, Resene Black White or a slightly warmer white – Resene Merino.

Q. Could you please recommend some colour options to repaint our house?

A. Because of the existing green roof, guttering, window joinery, front door and garage door colour and the brick feature you don't have a plentiful selection to choose from. These colours might be worth checking out to see if they appeal to you – Resene Chalk Dust or Resene Rice Cake.

Q. I painted our small flat Resene Quarter Tana and the door trims are Resene White. Should I paint the doors Resene White or Resene Quarter Tana?

A. If you are totally unsure of how it will all look, you might undercoat the doors in Resene White to have a 'dress rehearsal' of what the white doors throughout the house would look like.

If you didn't like that 'white' everywhere look then you could paint them in Resene Quarter Tana in semi-gloss enamel.

Coloured doors in white frames highlight the doors more so you would notice them.

Q. We have a character 1930s bungalow. We have painted the roof Resene Grey Friars and I'm keen to find a warm grey to go with white window sills and all the trim. I quite like Resene Grey Nickel, I have seen it on a friend’s house but I am worried it may look too dark as the front of our house has a porch and is the darker side of the house? Can you suggest a couple of other shades of grey please to compare with? I'm after a softer colour, not too deep.

A. The following are some warm greys that you could check out - Resene Pale Slate, Resene Flotsam, Resene Quill Grey, Resene Quarter Delta, Resene Concrete or Resene Quarter Silver Chalice.

Q. The main house is a stucco plaster painted Resene Double Drought with Resene Coffee Bean trim around the top. We are recladding an extension with vertical weatherboards. What is a good contrasting colour with the Resene Coffee Bean trim around the top?

A. I take it you do want both parts of the house to look like a 'whole' and not like two totally unrelated elements? If this is the case perhaps you might consider using the exact same colour - Resene Double Drought - so the older part of the house and the new extension merge together. Alternatively you might consider one of the lighter variants - i.e. Resene Drought or Resene Half Drought so the old and the new have a relationship.

Q. We have a two storey house, the lower level is a medium sandstone brick, and the upper story is HardiPlank®, painted yellow. Our roof is Decramastic Mission Brown but it needs to be replaced. What colour COLORBOND® roof would go with our house? We have a balcony upstairs off the bedrooms, our gutter downpipes are Manor Red.

A. You have quite a few coloured elements on the house - coloured brick, coloured HardiPlank®, roof, guttering etc. My first thought was that you might use exactly the same colour as the gutters/downpipes so the Manor Red has a friend and isn't the odd man out. Or you might choose a deep neutral like Woodland Grey and paint the Manor Red to match for a simple modern look.

Q. Our benchtop colour is Wilson Art Pearl Soapstone, the cupboards are possibly Bestwood melamine moss grey velvet. What colour could we have on the glass splashback behind the stove top? We are conservative.

A. You don't indicate what colour the walls are or the floor and they may have a direct bearing upon what might be chosen. Perhaps you might use a silver metallic – Resene Silver Steel or a deeper metallic – Resene Basalt.

Or alternatively you might use a crystal clear glass directly over the wall colour - no feature colour but a protected surface. Or a colour that looks like a deeper version of the cabinetry colour - that would require you to take a sample of the melamine and the bench top into a Resene ColorShop for the Colour Specialist person to assist you in offering some colour options.

Q. I want to paint a feature wall in our bedroom. We have Resene Half Spanish White on our walls and I want to inject a bit of colour into the room. Our headboard is a medium grey and our furniture is black. The room has a glass sliding door and gets a lot of afternoon sun. What colour would you recommend for the feature wall? I was thinking possibly a blue shade?

A. There are so many blues that might appeal to you - these are a few that you could check out - Resene Seachange, Resene Whirlwind, Resene Bellbottom Blue, Resene Regatta, Resene True Blue, Resene Coast or Resene Barometer.

Q. I'm considering painting one of the rooms in Resene Half Soapstone. Your website lists some complementary colours: Resene Quarter Cougar, Resene Cougar and Resene Streetwise, which all seem quite dark. Are there any other colours that are lighter in tone that would match it?

A. You might check out these colours - they all look lovely with Resene Half Soapstone - Resene Half Blanc, Resene Urbane, Resene Dover White or Resene Mercury.

Resene Soapstone and Resene Half Soapstone have an unusual almost cool pink/beige/grey undertone so they can resist associating with some colours that are too yellow/beige in their undertone.

Q. What COLORBOND® colour would you use for guttering and the roof if you were painting the house in Resene Stack?

A. You might look at these ones – COLORBOND® Basalt, COLORBOND® Woodland Grey or COLORBOND® Monument.

Resene Stack is quite a dense tone so that is why the roof and guttering needs to be much deeper in tone.

Q. I would like advice on a colour to paint a hallway in a Victorian home. The hallway is long with ceilings with decorative cornice, picture rails and a plastered archway. It needs a colour to lighten it, as there is no natural light. The flooring is wide baltic pine floorboards. I was thinking of painting it all in a soft white. Same tone on everything.

A. You could look at these soft whites to see if they appeal to you – Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream, Resene Half Bianca or Resene Half Orchid White.

Hallways that are this long need a role in life - they cry out to be used to create a gallery - paintings, prints and photos can be hung in them as there is no bright sunlight to cause them to fade. You may need to use ornate light fittings with multiple globes to create a sense of glamour.

Q. We have just purchased a double brick home. We are going to do a modern renovation and paint out the walls and timber ceiling white. Can you suggest a white that will go with the slate floor, contemporary blackwood timber furniture and black timber kitchen with black light fittings? There are a lot of glass windows that face north, so lots of natural light.

A. These are a few 'whites' that would work well for you with your black theme. The first one is slightly cooler and the other is slightly warmer though identifying the subtle differences may be difficult at times. If you place a sheet of white printer paper partially over the colour sample you may be better able to 'see' the undertones of colour. I suggest you paint up large A2 cards (available from Resene ColorShops) with two coats/using all of the testpot of the whites and tape them up on walls and ceilings to see how they look; with changing qualities of natural and artificial light you may be surprised to see how they alter.

Try Resene Black White or Resene Half Merino.

Q. I am currently upgrading a 1970s house with new garage door, new roof, just had windows replaced with double glazing, colour silver pearl, and are keen to have grey, charcoal colours as paint for the house, contrasting with the garage doors and window surrounds. I want a darker grey for the roof.

A. Is the garage door going to match the window joinery? Or are you opting to use the same colour as the roof? Powder coat colours are not extensive but if you want a darker grey for the roof - and possibly the garage door as well - you might check out these ones – Grey Friars or FlaxPod, or alternatively a lighter grey – Sandstone Grey.

Colours that you might check out for the house are these ones - Resene Quarter Grey Friars, Resene Half Gauntlet or a deeper option to go with a lighter roof colour (Sandstone Grey) Resene Chicago.

Q. We are painting out our three living areas. Each space is large receiving light from the north. Each room opens onto the next with generous access. We have completed the kitchen with Resene Half Robin Egg Blue. The middle family room at one end is a TV zone with green leather furnishings and at the other end a four sided window conservatory area which we use predominantly for breakfast and coffee. The wooden latticed suite in this area I have painted in off white/cream and distressed the paint work and have it upholstered in raw linen. The third living space is the dining room. The family room and dining room open up to each other with French doors. We are going to paint the dining room in Resene Blanched Pink. Do you think the middle room painted in Resene Quarter Heathered Grey will complement well with Resene Half Robin Egg and Resene Blanched Pink. I prefer to stay with the Karen Walker colours.

A. I really like Resene Quarter Heathered Grey. It looks lovely when seen close to Resene Half Robin Egg Blue. I am sure when it is all completed you will have really lovely looking living rooms.

Q. What colours/shades would you suggest to lighten a master bedroom. It's north facing but dark due to a veranda. We like light greys, grey-lilacs and light greens like Resene Mantle for the bedroom. Possibly a light blue if interesting and not too nursery-like. The window will be painted white and we will have the original matai wooden floor. Our living areas are neutrals such as Resene Half Black White so would like to do a colour.

A. Colours in an interior often look twice the depth that you might imagine they will be. Because of the shadowy aspect of the bedroom you might need lighter colours in order for them not to look too heavy. These much lighter colours are a start point for you – Resene Half Duck Egg Blue, Resene White Thunder, Resene Rolling Fog, Resene Half Tasman or Resene Concrete.

Q. What's the best white to put with Resene Concrete and Resene Half Concrete? Also are these colours suitable for a lounge and bedroom? The blurb says a ‘wet look’ . I don't know what that means.

A. You could use Resene Quarter Black White or if you wanted a crisper contrast you might look at using real White - Resene White. If you want the white to merge in and be less contrasting to the main colours you could use Resene Quarter Concrete.

The Resene Concrete palette of colours is cool, silvery and wet looking like concrete is when the applicator adds detergent to the cement/sand mix to lighten/whiten it.

If you like these grey colours - compared to all other slightly similar greys that you have looked at - and your furniture, drapes and flooring co-ordinate well with them I am sure the silvery/cool/slightly industrial look will be suitable for a lounge and bedroom.

Q. We are painting our interior lounge/kitchen/dining with Resene Half Periglacial Blue. We are painting Resene Sea Fog in the bedrooms. Do we paint the laundry/bathroom/hallway and toilet Resene Half Periglacial Blue or the Resene Sea Fog? Also the joinery is going to be appliance white, matte. What colour do I paint the interior doors and door frames to go with these colours.

A. If you paint the laundry/bathroom/hallway and toilet slightly lighter than Resene Periglacial Blue - i.e. Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue that may work better for you. Colours in an interior always seem deeper - and deeper again in smaller less bright rooms.

If you paint the ceilings and woodwork throughout the house in the lightest version of Resene Wan White - i.e. Resene Quarter Wan White or the lightest version of Resene Sea Fog - i.e. Resene Quarter Alabaster it may co-ordinate better than the more definite coloured Resene Sea Fog colour. If you need to compare and judge for yourself I suggest you take a real metal sample of Appliance White into a Resene ColorShop and check out all of the Resene Sea Fog, Resene Alabaster and Resene Wan White A4 real paint samples in their Colour Library to see which 'white' suits best. Seeing large samples and comparing them - that is the important thing to do - with the white you are using for the joinery will clarify things for you.

Q. I am trying to select an interior white for a new build. I am trying to match the kitchen colour as I have shelves made up in Melteca® Snowdrift white and I want them to blend in nicely. I like Resene Half Alabaster but it looks yellowed next to such a cool white. What I really want is more of a grey tone but still very white - can Resene match this colour?

A. I think you may need to consider using a greyed white like Resene Quarter Wan White or Resene Quarter Black White. The cabinets will appear slightly more coloured and the walls more white. If you wanted an exact match to Melteca® Snowdrift (perhaps for the doors or other woodwork in the house) then if you visit your nearest Resene ColorShop they could arrange a colour match for you.

Q. I want to paint my walls off white with white trim. I don't want a cold white so nothing too grey or blue. Something with ‘greige’ (grey/beige) undertones and a little warmth. Would Resene Half White Pointer work? If so, what would you suggest for the trim? Would Resene Alabaster work? And what charcoal and black would you suggest for feature walls?

A. Resene Half White Pointer would work. Another option to consider might be Resene Eighth Truffle. I think Resene Half Alabaster may provide more clean contrast than Resene Alabaster would do. Some nice charcoals and blacks for feature walls might be these colours – Resene Half Bokara Grey, Resene Foundry, Resene Half Fuscous Grey, Resene Blackjack, Resene Double Foundry or Resene Double Cod Grey.

Q. I want to paint the exterior of an old two storey weatherboard house in the country charcoal grey with Resene Alabaster windows , doors (timber joinery) shutters and pergola. What are some charcoals that look good?

A. Some charcoals that you might look at are these – Resene Baltic Sea, Resene Tuna, Resene Gravel or Resene Half Fuscous Grey.

I strongly advise you to use the CoolColour™ reformulated versions of any deep colour. It won't completely stop dark colours causing heat related problems but it will help to reflect more heat. Older houses often have never ever been painted in anything other than white or very pale colours so the older weatherboards are more likely to show heat related problems.

Q. I have a south facing kitchen with French doors leading onto a deck and garden. The kitchen joins on to a family room which gets no direct sunlight and is quite dark. We have a terracotta tile floor in the kitchen and red carpet in the family room. I would like to paint the kitchen a white and carry it on to the family room. We have Indian cotton coloured curtains in the kitchen. The house is a long, narrow Victorian villa - one and a half rooms wide.

A. If you chose lighter/whiter/crisper whites you may find they pick up a grey look because of the light factor. You might consider using slightly warmed coloured whites to compensate for the quality of natural light - or lack of it. Try Resene Quarter Rice Cake, Resene Quarter Villa White, Resene Half Bianca or Resene Chalk Dust.

Q. I have an all timber older Lockwood home that is going to have its interior painted. At present the ceilings have been painted in Resene Quarter Merino. I was thinking of continuing the Resene Quarter Merino everywhere but I think this will be too bright. I am getting new carpet and curtains. The exterior of the house is Resene Triple Merino and the roof is Thunder Grey. My original intention was to have them blonded but this has not worked out.

A. Sometimes it is easier to choose the carpet and the curtains first - that way you have maximum choices and can ensure they work well with all of your furniture and accessories. Usually the paint colour is chosen last - so it co-ordinates well with the curtains, flooring and furniture.

If you choose the paint colour first it may exert control and compromise the choices available to you in options of curtaining and carpets. But if that isn't a problem to you then perhaps seeing as Resene Quarter Merino is such a definite colour (compared to pure White) it may be wise to use a variant of the same - i.e. Resene Half Merino or Resene Merino.

Q. I am trying to choose a colour for the weather boards of our house. The roof is COLORSTEEL® Karaka green. Greys don't work so I am looking at Resene Ecru White, Resene Quarter Ash and Resene Double Merino. The windows trims will be white – possibly Resene Quarter Alabaster or similar. I am after a fresh look!

A. Resene Double Merino is a warm earthy colour that might act as a balance to work with the much deeper olive green Karaka roof. Alternatively a slightly brighter colour could be Resene Titania – it is not as light as Resene Ecru White and not as greyed as Resene Quarter Ash. Another colour that might appeal is Resene Quarter Grey Olive which is an interesting green/beige and ochre. Resene Quarter Alabaster will work well with any colour as it is so crisp and clean.

Q. In searching for some inspiration for exterior colour; I have seen that you can offer some advice here. Please help me! I am very confused as to exterior colours and aluminium joinery colours. Our concrete block is Firth Manorstone in Urban Grey. Our COLORSTEEL® roof colour is FlaxPod. We need help selecting an aluminium joinery colour and a LINEA® Board colour. We like dark colours like Resene Judge Grey and Resene Ship Grey. But we are also open to any suggestions!

A. The powder coated window joinery needs to be addressed first as there are so few options available.

You don't indicate which particular brand/company is doing the joinery on your build. Some window/door joinery companies may have a few different options available so it pays to check. They need to be looked at in relationship to the roof colour. There isn't an exact colour match in joinery. You may need to think about a dark colour (that doesn't match the roof) or having a lighter colour to co-ordinate with the brick and using that as a basis to choose a colour for the LINEA®.

A light mid tone colour might be an easier way to go - Sandstone Grey looks good with Resene Ship Grey - but an alternative colour for the LINEA® might be Resene Mortar or Resene Double Friar Greystone . These are warmer shades (less definitely grey) and relate well to the roof and the joinery.

If you favoured a darker colour for the joinery you might consider using Ironsand which looks good with Resene Judge Grey as they are both much warmer/browner than the other previously mentioned options.

Might I suggest you go to the trouble of getting real powder coated metal samples of roof and joinery colours and the brick (especially the brick) and pop into a Resene ColorShop to view the large A4 colour samples in their Colour Library. This- will help you tremendously.

Q. I have a large, two storeyed country home in a transitional style from the 1930s - definitely not a villa. It is set in grounds with established large trees. It has a terracotta tile roof and wooden joinery. I am looking for some advice regarding colour choices for the exterior. I am fairly sure I would like to paint the joinery white. I want the house to look smart and inviting. It is a substantial character house. It currently has some mock Tudor elements (brown wooden battens) however, I want to paint these the same colour as the house as I do not want to emphasise this aspect of the house.

A. You mention the terracotta roof and I take from that you will be leaving that colour as it is now rather than painting it.

Some colours that you might look at are the following - Resene Double House White with Resene Quarter Black White for the trims and windows, or Resene Albescent White with Resene Half Alabaster for the trims and windows, or with a slightly stronger level of contrast - Resene Truffle with Resene White for the trims and windows, or a little more colour for a different type of look - Resene Duck Egg Blue with Resene Chalk Dust for the trims and windows.

Q. We are redecorating our bathroom and have selected a St Michel double basin unit in colour Carmine Gloss. Would you be able to give suggestions for a wall colour? We originally had selected Resene Periglacial Blue but this was before we had decided on the St Michel basin. The shower unit is white and the bath will be white. The ceiling is Resene Wan White. The bathroom is large.

A. With the ceiling being Resene Wan White - which is a greyed white - your first 'go to' option is exactly the same colour. This places the emphasis completely on the Carmine coloured vanity. It is a simple look but effective.

And again, because of the ceiling being a greyed white if you wanted a colour for walls that made it look 'whiter' it may have to be slightly deeper toned - i.e. Resene Double Black White or warmer toned i.e. Resene Quarter Rakaia.

Q. We have an Oamaru Stone house with light grey grout and very dark almost black aluminium joinery. We want to paint the fascia and eaves but can't decide on colours.

A. Do you want the fascia to stand out as a dark statement? You might paint it to match the aluminium joinery or a grey that was mid-way between the light grey grout and the very much darker aluminium joinery. You don't mention what the roof colour is - that might be a third possible colour option.

Under the eaves is often a white (not a definite colour but it is a personal choice) and you might use a slightly warmed white to relate to the Oamaru stone - i.e. Resene Quarter Bianca.

Q. I’m going to repaint my house. I’ve attached a picture of the front of the house that has a large basement area and is north facing. I’m thinking of painting the house Resene Silver Chalice. The deck timberwork is already Resene Quarter Silver Chalice. What colour for the basement would complement this without being too dark?

A. You might paint it the same colour as the deck - Resene Quarter Silver Chalice.

Alternatively you might paint it the same as the house colour - Resene Silver Chalice - this way, the house wouldn't look cut in half, height wise. If you weren't keen on those options you might use a slightly deeper tone - Resene Half Stack - but it will make a feature of the basement. Is it a feature that you want people to notice?

Q. I'm thinking of painting my front door a brighter colour, possibly a red/ crimson. I’m looking for a warmer statement than the Tapa. The house is Summerhill Stone painted Resene Lemon Grass. The soffits are Resene Half Spanish White and the panelling above the door and windows is Resene Tapa as is the doorstep. If I change the colour of the door should the doorstep also be painted in the same colour or left as is?

A. I think you may need to do the doorstep to match the door - otherwise the Resene Tapa would be alone and unrelated to the other colours on the house. Some colours that you might check out are these ones - Resene Salsa, Resene Dynamite, Resene Jalapeno, Resene Poppy, Resene Smashing or Resene Shiraz.

Q. I want to paint my bedrooms and halls white. Would Resene Half Sea Fog on walls and Resene Half Alabaster on ceilings/window sills/door frames provide a contrast? Is Resene Half Sea Fog whiter than Resene Black White?

A. Resene Half Sea Fog is only minimally less shaded than Resene Black White. In some qualities of natural light you might not notice any difference at all.

If you wanted a contrast to work well with Resene Half Sea Fog, you might use Resene Half Alabaster or Resene Quarter Alabaster.

Q. I’m stuck trying to find a colour scheme for my old 1929 railway cottage. I would prefer a nice neutral look and I think if I make the house too dark, it might make it look too small as its floor area is less than 100m2.

A. Some colour ideas to get you started - Resene Cloud, Resene Eighth Friar Greystone , Resene Half Silver Chalice, Resene Double Thorndon Cream, Resene Half Tea or Resene Ash. This selection of lighter neutrals won't make the cottage look small.

Q. I'm looking for a colour to paint the walls of my open plan house. The ceilings will be painted in Resene Half Black White and the trim in Resene Black White.

I like the colour Resene Zumthor, but when I painted a sample I felt it was a bit cold feeling for my house. I really like the colour and the level of colour. But I want something a bit warmer. I then tried Resene Half Emerge, which is a bit warmer but I feel the level of colour is too high and could be too much colour. Is it possible to do Resene Quarter Emerge even though it's not on the colour chart? I also tried Resene Breeze but felt it was too blue. Can you suggest any other colours to try that are along the same theme as these colours? I'm wondering about Resene Half Duck Egg Blue or Resene Quarter Duck Egg Blue but wonder if they'll be too grey. I'm after something that has a hint of green/grey and is warm feeling, but nothing that looks too grey as this won't match the aluminium or carpet.

A. You don't mention what colour the aluminium joinery is or the colour of the carpet and the colours will need to work with those. The colours you mention – Resene Half Duck Egg Blue and Resene Quarter Duck Egg Blue - are quite grey unless they are only seen on a very sunny wall.

Also because of the cooler grey/white of the ceiling and the trims - Resene Half Black White and Resene Black White - any lighter/warmer colours may make these look cooler and greyer - will that matter to you?

Some colour ideas to get you started - Resene Half Tasman or Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue. Or you could request a quarter version of Resene Emerge via your Resene ColorShop who could arrange for our Colour Lab to organise a formula.

Q. We are repainting our bedroom and hallway. We had Resene Parchment walls with Resene Half Tea on skirting/window frames. We have repainted the bedroom wall Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream, hoping it would blend well with the Resene Half Tea, but unfortunately it makes it look muddy. What would be an alternative for the surrounds?

A. Because your new wall colour is very pale and a lot whiter than your previous wall colour (and the wood trim colour Resene Half Tea is twice the strength of your new wall colour and much more earthy coloured) I suggest you look at these paler 'whites' to see if they appeal to you - Resene Half Rice Cake, Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta or Resene Alabaster.

Q. We are painting our three bedroom small rooms unit which has small rooms. The sun comes through in the morning and afternoon on each side. I thought a warm white would be best due to the small rooms and dark area in the hall/stairs. We have got down to two of your colours Resene Rice Cake and Resene Bianca - what would you suggest? We are thinking Resene Half Alabaster for trims and ceilings.

A. Resene Rice Cake has a little green edged shadow in it and Resene Bianca has a soft sweet warmth in it. Do you want a green edged sharper shadowy white (Resene Rice Cake) or a soft sweet sun lit white (Resene Bianca) in your rooms? Resene Half Alabaster is perfect as a trim and ceiling colour - with either wall colour.

Q. I am about to repaint the interior of our large house. I will be using Resene Thorndon Cream throughout. I am wondering, though, if I should be using a variety e.g. Resene Thorndon Cream, Resene Half Thorndon Cream and Resene Double Thorndon Cream. Why would you do this and what parts of the interior would you paint in these variations? I was going to paint the ceilings in Resene Alabaster.

A. If you were to paint all of the colour onto A2 card (available from Resene ColorShops) leaving a narrow unpainted border all around the edges of the card - so your eye focuses on the reality of the colour - it would help you a lot. The card can be moved from wall to wall/room to room and you would have a much better idea of where the colour works and where it needs to be lighter or deeper. Because colour in an interior deepens when all four walls are painted you need to be able to adjust the strength to accommodate the shadows in the rooms and the size of the rooms. South facing rooms often make a colour take on a grey or sour look. East facing rooms often green up a colour.

West facing rooms often add more warmth to a colour so Resene Thorndon Cream may take on a subtle beige undertone. North facing rooms often don't get lots of sun on all the walls until the sun is lower in the sky in winter and can look shadowy the rest of the time. Smaller rooms can make a colour appear deeper (double the depth) and rooms with no natural light (like hallways) do as well. Rooms that are super bright all day (so you need to draw curtains or wear sun glasses inside) may need deeper versions of a colour to absorb the bright glare. Because of these factors taking the time to test the colour - as I have indicated - is the only way to work out what the colour really looks like and what changes you need to make.

Q. We have started painting our house with Resene Albescent White as at the time we chose it we were stuck with an Oyster kitchen colour. However, now we are updating our kitchen to a gloss white and I am starting to second guess the decision to do the walls with Resene Albescent White as it looks a bit too creamy for my liking. We have done the ceilings Resene Quarter Rice Cake and the trim and doors in Resene Half Rice Cake. Could you please suggest a pale grey that would go with the Resene Rice Cake being a warm tone?

A. These warmed greys might be nice - check them out and see if one of them appeals to you - Resene Quarter Atmosphere, Resene Concrete, Resene Triple Black White, Resene Quarter Truffle or Resene Double House White.

Q. I have wooden polished furniture and furnishing in shades of beiges and brown with lots of rugs and artwork. We are building a house, can you please let me know if the following colour scheme will work and suggest colours please - Exterior: NZ Premier Brick in Soapstone, garage, roof and front door in Lignite (a dark brown), window joinery in Titania. Can you please suggest a ‘white’ to go with this colour scheme for the weatherboards and the window frames can be the same? On the interior – Resene trims and joinery Resene Quarter Bianca, living areas on the north elevation Resene Half Spanish White and sleeping zone on the south elevation, Resene Quarter Spanish White.

A. For the exterior you might look at using one of these 'whites'- they work well with the Titania joinery and the Lignite roof and doors- Resene Quarter Titania, Resene Half Titania or Resene Titania - this colour is a match to the joinery. Or try Resene Merino or

Q. We're painting the exterior of a big two storey block and brick 70s house. Currently white block ground floor and red brick upstairs. The block portion is bigger than the brick area. Love the idea of a charcoal downstairs and a lighter colour up top. And a bright yellow front door!

A. Had you considered using just one colour on the whole house to make it seem taller and well integrated - less layered in height?

You might look at these colours to see if they appeal to you - Resene Grey Friars (lighter version Resene Quarter Grey Friars), Resene Tuna (lighter version Resene Quarter Tuna), Resene Fuscous Grey (lighter version Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey) or Resene Baltic Sea (lighter version Resene Quarter Baltic Sea).

Q. We want to find a suitable neutral white colour that will match the existing window framing colour of our house which is a light green. I have looked at the colour Resene White Pointer wondering if this would match or any further suggestions.

A. Resene White Pointer is a nice grey/beige neutral and it would harmonise with the green windows which may be the powder coat colour called Green Mist. If you had a match colour it would be the same green as the window joinery. I take it that is not what you mean? But if you would prefer a green type of neutral (to match the windows) then you could use Resene Paddock - it does match.

Or you might check out these alternatives that are either a green edged beige or warm toned greys that might look good with the windows – Resene Bone White, Resene Quarter Foggy Grey or Resene Quarter Taupe Grey.

Q. I am having trouble with colour choices for rental properties. The two houses are joined to each other and will also be painted the same. We are unable to match the current colour as this will be the first time we have painted the outside; it needs to be freshened up with a modern look. The fences out front have been stained in Resene Cedar. We would like to paint the roof Resene Grey Friars. The walls are where I am stuck; do we go greys or off whites, or something different? Do we paint all one colour or break it up? Spouting and down pipes also would be painted. The wooden joinery would have to stay white. The house behind has dark brown joinery commonly used in the 80s.

A. Perhaps you might consider using a slightly warmer charcoal for the roof instead of Resene Grey Friars - i.e. Resene Windswept and check out some light but earthier greys for the house.

You could try Resene Half Taupe Grey for the main colour and Resene Quill Grey for the gable detail. These colours look lovely with white trims on windows etc.

Q. I have to pick colours before our fire goes back in. The whole kitchen and dining/lounge is getting repainted. I like Resene Lemon Grass, Resene Tuna and Resene Linen and was first thinking of a feature of one of these colours behind the fire. Really heading towards Resene Lemon Grass but am not sure how to work in? I have also ordered a sample of Resene Tapa to work with Resene Tuna but am now thinking it is too grey? Our house is quite dark. I have also been playing with Resene Bianca, Resene Villa White and Resene Thorndon Cream and I would run these into the hall to lighten this area – i.e. Resene Lemon Grass? Or a different colour in the kitchen? If the kitchen was a lighter colour I could use an orange print again.

A. You mention Resene Lemon Grass - this is a deeper slightly greyer green colour - you might find it looks twice the depth that you imagine it will do and appear cooler - unless it was in a large room with masses of natural light (the room would need to have sunshine on all the walls for the main part of the day) and because not many rooms are like that I think Resene Linen might be better if you want a fresh warm green. Resene Linen (this is much lighter than Resene Lemon Grass) could be the colour you use in the kitchen.

Both Resene Bianca and Resene Villa White have yellow in them - if you want to get away from any yellow tones then a new main colour that might work well and gives you plenty of light might be Resene Half Thorndon Cream - this could be used in the hall, dining room and lounge. It allows almost any other colours to be used close to it. All colours look deeper than you might expect them to look in an interior hence the recommendation to use Resene Half Thorndon Cream.

If you did use a feature behind the fire then the darker colour - Resene Tuna would look really stunning. It is a serious deep charcoal with a blue undertone. I am unsure about the Resene Tapa but you may like it as a substitute for the Resene Tuna behind the fire if you decide the Resene Tuna is too dark.

Q. We are flipping our dining room and kitchen around so our kitchen will have great views over Wellington harbour looking towards Eastbourne. We are using Calcutta Caesarstone® for the island and benchtops and are going for a traditional kitchen. We were planning a fairly natural white for the cabinets but I'm worried it’s going to be too bright as the sun streams in through the large window in the morning. Can you recommend a shade of light grey or a another neutral/white that won't be too bright for the cabinets and one for the walls?

A. There are many possible options available to you and you may be wise to take a sample of the Caesarstone® into your nearest Resene ColorShop to view the following light greys and whites so that you can see larger A4 samples from their Colour Library so you can get a better idea of what the colours truly look like.

Q. I want to paint the interior of my 20 year old, two storied, French country styled home. The exterior walls are rendered in a Haddenstone terracotta colour. The exterior window frames and doors are painted in an off white. The pergolas and facing boards are painted a dark, warm charcoal. Inside we have parquetry floors (the wood is a deep honey in colour) downstairs and a muddy-red-terracotta coloured carpet upstairs. The house is on a hilltop facing north and catches a lot of light.

I have been considering a warm grey with off white trims but am finding it very difficult to find a grey that is soft, muddy and warm in tone.

A. Warm greys have either yellow (this browns or greens up the grey) or red/blue (this purples the grey) undertones. The following colours are worth checking out – Resene Double House White, Resene Quarter Cloudy, Resene Quill Grey, Resene Whiteout, Resene Rakaia, Resene Flotsam, Resene Pale Slate or Resene Mercury.

Off white trims take you into cloudy whites - i.e. Resene Double Alabaster or whites that have a warmth to them - i.e. Resene Quarter Bianca.

Q. Our house is a 1928s bungalow and we need to paint the bedroom of a 13 year old girl. The room is completely internal with no windows to the outside. It has a 3m stud and its dimensions are 3.8 x 4.8 m. Whenever the room is occupied the lights are on so the paint colour changes with the electric light. At present it is painted Resene Periglacial Blue, but I feel it's too dark, given the room has very little natural light. My daughter's favourite colour is purple.

A. Any colour may look too dark when the lights aren't on. Testing colours to see how they look needs to take place when the lights are on - as it is when the room is occupied - and you may have to accept how quite different the colours look when the lights aren't on - or vice versa.

If your daughter likes purple and you feel a very light colour is needed because of the room not having any natural light at all you might check out these colours – Resene Essence, or other colours to try are Resene Sonique, Resene Half Fog or Resene Blue Chalk.

Electric light will warm up the colours - this will make them rosier looking - and the quality of light when the electric lights are on and the small area will make the colour look twice its depth.

Q. If I was going to use Resene Quarter Truffle on the walls, what colour would you do the doors? Could you put Resene Half Truffle or Resene Truffle and would you go darker in the kitchen tiles on the floor? This is a smaller home.

A. Spaces seem larger and the overall look seems simple and modern when people use the same colour (or just slightly deeper) on the woodwork - doors included. If you do that just altering the sheen/product to semi-gloss enamel (not a matt or low sheen like the walls) is sometimes enough of a change rather than a big colour change.

But - and there is always a but - if you have sticky fingered children, cats that like to rub their sweat glands on the edge of the doors, flappy tailed dogs with big muddy paws and a partner who works on the farm or in the mechanics workshop you may prefer a deeper colour on the doors so the finger marking and other evidence of family life doesn't stand out as much - and if that is the case then Resene Truffle might be used. Think it through carefully - lots of doors all in a deeper colour might be a bit attention seeking and make too much of a feature.

Q. We are repainting the interior of a two storey 70s house that looks out over green farmland. The windows are ugly bronze/ brown aluminium, which we can't change. I like earthy nature colours and we want the same colour throughout.

Q. I want to paint my north-facing cottage bedroom very very pale green (almost not green) with white trim. Can you suggest a range of greens please?

A. Colours on an exterior can look a lot lighter than you might imagine they will do - depending on the natural light. You could check out these colours to see if they appeal to you - Resene Green White, Resene Lime White, Resene Eighth Tana, Resene Quarter Linen, Resene Saltpan, Resene Swans Down or Resene Half Secrets.

Q. We want to paint our living room. We love Resene Tasman, but it is slightly too blue in some light. Can you suggest a colour similar to Resene Tasman but with slightly more green? For the bathroom, we have dark brown tiles and a white vanity and a white ceiling. Currently the walls are painted creamy brown/tea. Can you suggest some light colours that are not too bright or pastel or brown?

A. You might look at Resene Secrets - it appears to be slightly greener than Resene Tasman.

Colours worthy of checking out for the bathroom might be these ones - Resene Quarter Truffle, Resene Quarter Ash, Resene Milk White, Resene Rice Cake or Resene Half Villa White.

Q. We are building a new house and are going to have black carpet, white kitchen joinery and blackish grey benchtops. What would you recommend for interior wall colours and vertical blind colours?

A. White, silver, mid grey, charcoal or black blinds might work well with the other colours you are considering. You have a huge amount of colour options available for the walls - these are a few for you to consider - Resene Half House White or slightly deeper - Resene House White, Resene Sea Fog or slightly deeper - Resene Double Sea Fog or Resene Half White Pointer or slightly deeper - Resene White Pointer.

Q. I am stuck with a green roof and white aluminium joinery on a very basic house. How can I update the look using colour? I’m not afraid to go dark with paint.

A. With a definite shade of green on the roof it is limiting as to what might be used on the house but some of these lovely neutrals might be worth checking out - Resene Truffle, Resene Eighth Friar Greystone , Resene Double White Pointer, Resene Triple Sea Fog or Resene Thorndon Cream.

Q. We just bought a house in Brisbane, north facing, with what I thought was plenty of windows. Walls are beige. I thought given all this light, we could pull off Resene Black White, but when I painted a sample board and moved it around the rooms, it looked way too cold. I had also wanted to choose a good feature wall colour that goes with the white, but also contrasts with a teak cabinet I have. I used Resene Bunting, as it was one of the colours shown to go with Black White, and I thought blue was the complement for yellow (teak). However, I think maybe a purple colour might have been a better choice. We have some yellow and red things in the house already. If you could suggest a clean white that's not too cold, but definitely not throwing cream, and a nice feature colour to complement our teak cabinet, it would be extremely helpful.

A. Resene Black White is a cool white and would seem more so when viewed close to the warm beige and yellow/red tones you have in the house.

North facing rooms are not necessarily warm and light. It really depends upon what amount of bright sunlight comes right across the floor (covering at least 90% of the floor) and bathes all the walls in bright natural light all day long.

The complement of orange which is the combination of yellow and red (and that is the colour of teak) may be a combination of red and blue - i.e. purple. So as a feature colour you are almost right - and if you chose a warmer type of white you might get the look you want to achieve.

Perhaps you could check out these types of whites and warmer blues with purples undertones and more complex red/violets - Resene Half Rice Cake, Resene Double Alabaster, Resene Half Bianca, Resene Lucky Point, Resene Redemption Blue, Resene Aviator, Resene Full Monty or Resene Avenger.

Q. I have false multi coloured bricks behind an indoor fireplace. I would like to make them look modern and a feature. What can you suggest I can paint them with?

A. A modern feature may have to relate to your other colours - walls, carpet, furniture etc. Without knowing what you have - or what you like - it is difficult to suggest options for you. Perhaps as a first step you might apply a sealer – Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer is usually used on any porous surface.

Then you could undercoat the bricks in white. This will do two things - It will help you to see what a 'white' look might be like.
When you test colours by painting them onto card and tape them on the white surface you will see the reality of the colour and not be confused because of the multi coloured bricks.

Q. We would like to paint our house a dark colour such as Resene Bokara Grey but are concerned about what colour to paint the roof. The windows are Titania.

A. It is always a difficult call to find a compatible roof colour when the deeper colour is on the body of the house. It takes what is usually the roof colour option. There is nowhere to go to but to consider much lighter options.

So with that in mind, you might use the same as the windows - Resene Titania, or a slightly deeper variant of the window colour - Resene Bone White. Alternatively you might use these warmer greys - Resene Tundora or Resene Concord.

Q. We are currently choosing colours for our new build, and have decided on Resene Nocturnal for our exterior, with Resene Alabaster trimmings. We also have a dark Sandstone Grey roof and I was just wondering if you had advice on what colour the downpipes should be? We know our colour choice probably won't appeal to everyone but we are pretty excited about it!

A. COLORSTEEL® Sandstone Grey isn't a dark colour - it is a mid-tone but may look half again as light depending upon the angle of the roof to the sun. You could use the same colour for the downpipes. If you used Resene Alabaster it may look a bit too 'white' against the deep main house colour. Your other option is to paint the downpipes to match the house colour so they merge in.

Q. We are repainting the exterior of our house which has charcoal Monier tiles and dark bronze aluminium joinery. One half of the house is clad in stained vertical band sawn cedar boards and battens, and the other half is painted weatherboards. We want to have a change from the current Resene Eagle on the weatherboards and Resene Karaka gutters and bargeboards to something more modern. We are looking at Resene Woodsman Iroko stain on the cedar and Resene Half Friar Greystone on the weatherboards, with gutter and bargeboards in either Resene Ironsand or Resene Grey Friars. Do you think this will tie together, and also what would you recommend for the soffits and some timber windows?

A. If you preferred the cooler charcoal tones of Resene Grey Friars for the gutters and the bargeboards and the Resene Quarter Grey Friars for the weatherboards it does create a discord with the warmer dark bronze aluminium joinery even if you gave it a 'stain colour’ friend like Resene Iroko on the cedar. They are not totally happy to be seen together.

You might check out Resene Woodsman Smokey Ash for the cedar - it is slightly less olive toned than Resene Iroko.

Have you considered using Resene Friar Greystone on the weatherboards (to tie in with the dark bronze aluminium windows and the new stain?) and Resene Ironsand for the gutters and bargeboards?

Q. We are painting our very sunny kitchen. I have gone with Resene Delta on the kitchen cupboards which I really like. The trouble is, I want a soft pale grey on the walls but can’t find one. I have tried Resene Double Sea Fog and Resene Triple Sea Fog but they have too much brown. I’ve tried Resene Quarter Delta but it’s too dark.

A. You might check these colours out - Resene Double Black White, Resene Quill Grey, Resene Quarter Silver Chalice, Resene Triple Black White or Resene Athens Grey.

Another colour possibility that will work well is a white - i.e. Resene Half Sea Fog - have you considered that option?

Q. We are building a house using COLORSTEEL® Grey Friars for our roof and garage door. Our joinery is Titania. Our brick is Midlands Grande Blanco. We have quite a bit of weatherboard and are looking for a soft grey to paint the weatherboards. Can you please give me some recommendations? The window have bands and sills and we are planning on painting them Resene Half Titania rather than full Resene Titiania. Do you think that will work?

A. Have you considered using Resene Titania on the weatherboards - at least it would match the yellow/grey/almost green edged undertone in the window joinery without introducing another random grey? Or seeing as you are already using the lighter variation of Titania you might consider continuing on with Resene Half Titania? Another colour that is a little sympathetic to the joinery colour is Resene Quill Grey.

Q. We have renovated our house and are trying to choose some colours to go with the existing Resene Eagle colour. The house is approached from the top as it is down steps. The roof is COLORSTEEL® Ironsand. The cladding on the highest roof is vertical, and the rest is horizontal to match the existing. We are considering something like Resene Planter for the door. We are thinking Ironsand for the fascia but possibly something lighter for the soffits. We are thinking about a contrasting colour (lighter or darker?) for the part that has vertical cladding and perhaps some other part?

A. Some colours for you to try - deeper colours for the cladding - Resene Quarter Ironsand or Resene Quarter Evolution, and lighter colours for the soffits - Resene Half Ecru White or Resene Rice Cake.

Q. We have a cedar clad house which has been restained. We want to change the colour of the roof which looks anaemic green and are thinking of a dark red (the same colour as the front door) or green. The guttering currently matches the front door but can be changed. I am concerned that a red roof will give an effect with light and shade to it and would welcome suggestions. The PVC window frames are in a light green and no doubt the original intention was for the roof to match these.

A. If you wanted a deeper red tone you might consider Resene Red Planet or Resene Scoria. Some greens that you might check out are Resene Seaweed, Resene Karaka or Resene Squall.

Q. I am painting a 60 square metre 1950-60s bach. The layout is open plan, L shape with two bedrooms at the west end of the lounge. The L part provides a nook. Natural light floods the kitchen/livingroom until early afternoon. After that, the area is gloomy, no southwest windows, hence no natural light. The floors are pine, a rich amber/orange colour. What off white would you recommend for the walls and ceiling to complement the floors? Also, I am thinking of a rich midnight blue to go behind the linen sofa, with a mirror and paintings. Do you think splashes of colour could be too much for a very small space? I love colour, but need to tread cautiously. I may turn the living area into my art studio.

A. If you use a warmed cream/off white it will add lots of light and may well make the space in the bach feel larger. It will harmonise with the pine floor boards. A rich blue will work perfectly as a feature behind the sofa. If you have colourful (and random) patterned cushions on the sofa, perhaps a throw rug over the back of the sofa and a bold coloured rug in front of the sofa, it may be enough in the way of colour. Don't bother treading cautiously - if you are an artist you are all about colour, pattern and texture so it is good for your soul. Use salt lamps to add a soft warm glow in the dim areas of the bach - the organic shapes and glow is soothing as well as adding an ambiance to this area.

Check these colours out - Resene Half Orchid White, Resene Half Bianca, Resene Quarter Titania or Resene Quarter Albescent White. Some rich blues for a feature - Resene Bullitt, Resene Zinzan, Resene Regatta or Resene Wishing Well.

Q. Our house is half red brick and half white plaster. We are going to have the white plaster and eaves painted. I would like to change to a less stark contrast to the red brick. The joinery and roof are New Denim Blue, but it is faded quite pale in places, which makes it more limiting than if it was darker. My concern is mainly the back view which has a large expanse of plaster. I would like something light, but warm, as some cool colours can look drab and slightly dirty. Most greys I have looked at end up looking blue beside the joinery. I would like beige, greige, or a creamy colour as a last resort. Nothing too yellow, pink or blue toned.

A. Perhaps complex neutrals like one of these ones might appeal to you - Resene Triple Merino, Resene Double House White, Resene Quarter Atmosphere, Resene Half Tea, Resene Half Truffle or Resene Albescent White.

Q. I'm having a hard time choosing a colour to paint our renovated bathroom; it is only small and I want to add a bit of colour. The bottom half of the walls are done in an older off white coloured lining so we just want something that will complement this on the top half, in a subtle way. The window frames are Appliance White. I do like blues, greys and greens. I've looked at Resene Quarter Duck Egg Blue, Resene Half Emerge and Resene Concrete.

A. I think the colours that you have been looking at are lovely in the context of your bathroom but they will look a bit deeper than you might imagine they will do. This is because of the small space and the white tiles. You can look also at these colours which are lovely but a tiny bit lighter - Resene Half Concrete, Resene Half Iron, Resene Quarter Surrender or Resene Half Halcyon.

Q. We are looking at changing our roof colour and are leaning towards Resene Forecast. We are wanting a white or off white that will complement that colour. We also need some ideas for the bargeboards, a darker blue or grey that will look good with Resene Forecast. It also needs to blend in with our brick but I want to veer away from the terracotta look and pull out the darker colour in the brick.

A. Resene Forecast will look half again as light when the sunlight reflects off the angle of the roofing iron. Is that what you are trying to achieve - a pale silvery blue colour? Lighter/whiter colours might be these ones - Resene Quarter Surrender or Resene Half Iron. Deeper ones might be these ones - Resene Quarter Tuna or Resene Half New Denim Blue.

All colours seen on an exterior look lighter (unless they are seen in deep shade) so it does pay to carefully test them to see how they look in reality.

Q. I want to paint two very small bedrooms, approx. 3m x 2m that have low ceilings 1.8m high. Will they seem larger if the ceilings were painted the same pale colour as the walls, or should I paint the ceilings white? We are not worried by fashion or trends.

A. I would use a real white - Resene White - on the ceilings. Even the palest wall colour (used on the ceilings) will appear deeper than the walls, due to light falling away and creating shadows. A colour on the ceilings may make them appear much lower than they are now.

Q. Our home interior is currently Resene Quarter Tea on the walls and Resene Eighth Tea above the picture rail and on the ceiling. We want to freshen up the walls but leave the ceilings as they're still in good condition. What other neutral colours do you think could be suitable to go with the Resene Quarter Tea?

A. Anything lighter, whiter might work with Resene Quarter Tea as a ceiling colour but it is harder to find colours that will work with Resene Eighth Tea. It has a cool pink/grey [almost mushroom] undertone so it compromises your choices.

If you are keeping Eighth Tea on the ceiling you might look at these colours - Resene Pale Slate, Resene Quarter Truffle, Resene Eighth Joss or Resene Rakaia.

Q. I have a fairly basic 1950s style kitchen, with wooden cupboards and a stainless bench. At present it is mainly yellow. I really like the colour Resene Into The Blue and also the curtain that Resene recommends with this colour. My question is, what other colours could I use with this colour and curtain? Also, which parts would be coloured and how? Should I just paint the drawers blue or the whole front of the cabinets? Or is there a better way of incorporating this colour into a design?

A. I really like Resene Into The Blue - it has a fresh and friendly look, doesn't it? If you just paint the drawers in the blue and all the other bits of the cabinets in a white - Resene Alabaster - it will make the blue really `pop' - and that is a very retro way of painting the kitchen cabinetry. I like it that way, but it is your kitchen so you can do anything at all that you want.

The walls could be a fresh little green like Resene Chill Out - this would take the place of the lovely sunny yellow you have on the walls now which really makes the room come alive. Or if you wanted a soft toned neutral you could use Resene Quarter Tea.

Q. I am looking to paint the exterior of our house and am after a colour combination for the external walls and fence. The roof and garage door were recently painted Sandstone Grey. I have come across new development houses in the North Shore in Auckland and have also visited the show homes of various developers; I am looking for a similar effect where the colour combination shows off a bit of luxury, upmarket and new house feel and look.

Some features/points to note will be that the weatherboards are a bit broad and also the window frames are a light cream colour. Can you please recommend a colour combination/s to achieve the look I am after that goes with the current colour of the window frames, roof and garage door.

I am open to the idea of changing the colour of the garage door sometime down the line if required but would be happy if can get a colour combination that works with the current colour and also a future different colour.

A. You might look at these options - I think they would work with the distinctive window joinery colour and the Sandstone Grey - Resene Quarter Titania, Resene Bone White or Resene Atmosphere.

If you were to consider changing the garage door - perhaps to a slightly lighter colour so it wasn't so dominant - you might consider using Resene Half Tapa.

Q. We have an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge, all painted Resene Black White with a small wing wall at the entrance painted Resene Impromptu. It has two sliders and many windows but still seems dark. We would like to find a green to match the wing wall that has very natural tones and lightens the area.

A. Some rooms are naturally shadowy and don't get bright sunlight flooding in across the whole floor and reflecting off the walls. If the room, in spite of the large windows and sliders, seems dark with an extremely white/light colour - Resene Black White on the walls, I am not sure that using more of the Resene Impromptu (a green to match the wing wall) will achieve the effect you want.

If you wanted a lighter/brighter green similar to Impromptu then you might check out these two colours - Resene First Light or Resene Ragamuffin.

If these colours are too bold and bright then you might look at the following colours - Resene Quarter Rice Cake, Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream or Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta.

Q. We have a 60s home with a half brick, half vertical weatherboard exterior, an iron roof and a stucco type base. The base is quite large as the house is raised at the front on a sloping section. The new joinery will all be Matt Black. We are looking at painting the brick areas Resene Nero, the weatherboards Resene Black White, and the roof and base Resene Half Masala. Will this work? I have used Resene Nero and Resene Black White on lots of projects but am trying to find a complementary mid grey that doesn't throw blue or purple. The patio surround will be stained timber.

A. Resene Half Masala is a warm earthy grey (has yellow/ brown olive influences) with no purple or blue undertones at all. Resene Nero can sometimes (usually on the easterly side of the house) throw out a little blue undertone - if that worries you, you could always use Resene All Black.

Q. Can you please give me some colour options for a feature wall in a bedroom? The other walls are Resene Half White Pointer. The carpet is mid grey with brown tone, Norman Ellison range, Garfield colour. There are varnished wooden sills, and a light brown curtain on feature wall. I am looking at Resene Quarter Ironsand. What are your thoughts and could you give me some other options? The room doesn’t get much direct sunlight. Could you also help with options for a feature wall in the lounge? There is no curtain but the wall has a fireplace on it.

A. All colours in an interior can look twice their depth. If your preferred colour - Resene Quarter Ironsand looks like Resene Half Ironsand or slightly deeper will that be ok? Another - slightly lighter - deep colour that you might consider is Resene Wireless.

In the lounge you might consider a colour that enhances the fireplace, or the furniture. But if you have absolutely nothing in mind you could use a subtle tonal colour like Resene Triple White Pointer or Resene Half Pravda.

Q. We have a 1970s small single storey house made of concrete blocks with silver aluminium joinery. We are fairly opened minded and would like our 70s house to look modern and in harmony with the many trees around it. We were thinking a silver roof and green on the walls.

A. You might look at these colours to see if they appeal to you - Resene Atmosphere – roof and Resene Seaweed – main, Resene Lattitude – roof and Resene Black Forest – main, or Resene Sword - roof and Resene Woodsmoke – main.

The first two roof options are paler greys that can look lighter in bright sunlight. The third roof option is metallic silver.
The gables, fascia, bargeboards that are a lighter/whiter colour might look quite smart if they were painted in a slightly coloured white colour - Resene Quarter Titania, Resene Double Sea Fog or Resene Double Black White.

Q. I have a big lounge with big windows on two walls and two small windows on the third wall with lots of light and sunshine. What sort of colours should I choose, light or dark? I don't have any sense of what colours to use to get some warmth into the room.

A. If the room is bright but not warm then you may be best to look at mid toned colours. They will add a warm feeling but won't be too dark. Some colour ideas to get you started are Resene Spanish White, Resene Half Haystack, Resene Parchment or Resene Tea.

When colours start at eighth formula and go as dark as triple formula then colours sit in the mid tone area - neither too light nor too dark.

Q. We have just renovated our main bathroom, rear entrance and storage area. The rest of the house is Resene Sisal tones and rimu trim/floors. After six years with this colouring, I wanted a crisp/white/grey bathroom. It looks wonderful but I am now trying to tie this colouring back into the main hallway which is Resene Eighth Sisal. Can I use Resene Black White as trim against the Resene Eighth Sisal in an attempt to tie it all together? I should have planned it overall but just wanted that crisp clean bathroom with white and grey tiling!

A. Resene Black White will look too grey or dingy with Resene Eighth Sisal and being a similar depth you might not see a pleasing level of contrast between the two colours - but if it was a much lighter variant - i.e. Resene Quarter Black White, it would definitely work.

Q. We are doing a full exterior repaint and are having trouble picking a colour. The joinery is dark brown. We don't want to go dark on the exterior paint. We are also repainting the roof, preferably a darker shade such as Resene Cave Rock (this is a close colour match to our joinery).

A. You might check out these colours to see if any of them appeal to you - Resene Eighth Tea, Resene Eighth Truffle, Resene Quarter Perfect Taupe, Resene Quarter Cougar, Resene Eighth Bison Hide or Resene Eighth Akaroa. These colours come as deeper variants also if you feel you want a little more depth.

Q. Our house has a Karaka roof with Scoria trim. A linked garage is COLORSTEEL® Lichen. Currently the walls are Resene Clay Creek and we want to repaint them. We want something that reflects the gold - green - fawn colours of the tussock grassland surrounding our home. We've thought of Resene Thistle and Resene Parchment. Would you have any suggestions?

A. Apart from the colours that you mention [which could work well) you might check out these ones to see if they appeal to you - Resene Bubble White, Resene Half Nomad, Resene Sugar Loaf, Resene Eagle, Resene Passport or Resene Half Grey Olive.

Q. We have relocated a 1960s house to our farm. It is being reclad with plywood and battens. We have put new windows in and a new roof is going on - both Ironsand. I am wondering about a colour for the soffits and thinking Resene Double Tea I am also thinking of using a Natural stain and not sure if that will be dark enough on the plywood?

A. With Ironsand on the roof and joinery and Resene Double Tea on the soffits and (possibly) any other trims you may prefer to use a slightly deeper colour on the ply and battens. Perhaps you could check out these ones - Resene Woodsman Iroko or Resene Woodsman Nutmeg. It is up to you but the slightly deeper stain colours do look very smart with the Ironsand.

Q. Is Resene Eighth Rice Cake a suitable ceiling colour? Previously we have used Resene Half Alabaster but this house has a mix of high arched ceiling, low entrance ceiling (2.2m) and usual height ceilings. I'd like to achieve a warm cosy feel to the house. The walls are various strengths of Resene Fossil. One bedroom will have Resene Half Robin Egg Blue walls.

A. The ceiling colour, Resene Eighth Rice Cake, you are considering is slightly sharper/crisper than Resene Half Alabaster and will enhance the wall colours. It isn't that it is a warm colour in itself - the amount of yellow oxide in it is very minimal - but it will lift and lighten the ceiling and it looks lovely with the warm toned Resene Fossil palette and Resene Half Robin Egg Blue.

Q. We want to paint the exterior of our home. We really like the Resene Quarter Ironsand for the base of the house and we are after a crispy clean white to paint the house (not wanting cream and not too grey looking). What are some popular exterior colours that people are using these days ?

A. Slightly warmer crisp whites like these are worth checking out - Resene Eighth Rice Cake, Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream or Resene Quarter Bianca.

Q. I have a 1960s weatherboard home and I want to paint the exterior. My windows are Resene Half Villa White and I'm stuck on what colour to go for my weatherboards and roof, I like dark or light colours, something modern. I have a border of Buxus and standard Evergreen surrounding the house.

A. You might check out these options to see if they appeal to you - Resene Nocturnal - roof and Resene Fossil – main, Resene Windswept – roof and Resene Half Tea – main, or Resene Jurassic - roof and Resene Half Lemon Grass – main.

Q. We have painted the interior of our house Resene Tea. We are planning to paint the trims Resene Eighth Tea. Is Resene Eighth Tea a lilac white? We don't want lilac tones.

A. Resene Eighth Tea does have a pale grey/pink undertone. You might use one of these colours instead for the trims - Resene Quarter Albescent White or Resene Half Albescent White.

Q. We have a black roof with black spouting and the fascia is Cloud. The aluminium joinery is Silver Pearl and the garage door is Sandstone Grey. What colour do you think would be great on the LINEA® boards?

A. It might be wise to stay with the same colour as the garage door (Sandstone Grey) and the match colour for that is called Resene Gauntlet. Alternatively you could use the same colour as the fascia (Cloud) and the match colour is called Resene Helium.

Q. I need a palette of colours and wood stain that will blend in with the unfortunate green roof colour. The wood should be oil based stain but the window frames, gutters and garage should be a paint colour that blends with the whole. The wooden deck stain should blend in with the other colours. The only fixed colour is the unfortunate green roof.

A. I am not sure that any new colours will solve the problem of the 'unfortunate green roof' but you might check out these options to see if they appeal to you - Resene Woodsman Treehouse – house, Resene Lignite - trims for window frames, gutters and garage, Resene Woodsman Sheer Black – deck. Or Resene Woodsman Banjul – house, Resene Double Masala -trims for window frames, gutters and garage and Resene Woodsman Iroko – deck.

Q. I have a 1970s home and would like to paint my bedroom in Karen Walker’s Resene Smoky Green. I like a restful looking bedroom; do you think this would look ok? Sometimes I think it may be too grey.

A. If you are worried about how the colour changes at different times during the day (which may be the reason it takes on a greyish look) it might mean that you need to consider a slightly lighter or cleaner colour.

Please check these colours out to see if they appeal to you - Resene Windblown Green or Resene Pewter. They are still restful colours and may not grey up when the room is in shadow.

Q. I really like Resene Black White for my kitchen cabinets and bathroom joinery, but my concern is that my kitchen doesn't receive direct sunlight (small windows on east west and south walls). Will this colour make the cupboards look too cold? The cooker is black and counters are Carrara marble.

A. If you are concerned about the colour then I suggest you apply a testpot (all of it/two coats) onto a A2 card (available from Resene ColorShops) and tape it up on the cabinets and watch it during the daylight hours to see how it alters. This will give you a good idea about whether it appears too cool in your kitchen. Because the card is so large there is no way you cannot see it as it will be in the room.

A slightly warmer grey/white to test also - to compare with the Resene Black White - is Resene Sea Fog.

Q. We are building a new home and our theme is Scandinavian with a soft oak laminate floor throughout and neutral tones. I am struggling with an interior colour scheme to match our theme. My assumption is that you would do the walls one colour and trims/doors/ceiling and window frames another. Is that right? I would like some suggestions on a good neutral palette - we would like a wall colour with a very subtle grey tinge (thinking maybe Resene Sea Fog or Resene Half Sea Fog) and were thinking Resene Alabaster for the trims, ceiling, doors etc. Would this work with our flooring and is the contrast OK or would it look too intense? Should we do the ceiling a lighter tinge of the wall colour and just do the trims/doors/windows in Resene Alabaster?

A. The idea you had of using the same colour for the walls and the ceiling a lighter tint is a good idea. If you used Resene Sea Fog for the walls and Resene Double Alabaster (this is the same as Resene Quarter Sea Fog) it will create a softer transition between these elements.

All the doors, skirting boards, door frames and window frames might be Resene Half Alabaster and if they were a semi-gloss enamel and a much flatter type of paint for the walls and ceilings you would appreciate the graduations of white colour and the sheen level differences.

Q. We are currently building our 200 m2 home, which is in a rural location. The exterior will be a combination of LINEA® and plaster. The aluminium joinery is Matt Gravel and the roof is Sandstone Grey. We would like advice on the exterior colour. We want to match the LINEA®sections (which are at the very ends of the house, wrapping around to the back door) to the joinery and have come up with Resene Foundry or possibly Resene Double Foundry.

The plaster area is the mid-section at the front (with two sets of sliding doors) and between the LINEA® sections at the back. For the plaster colour we are considering Resene White Pointer. We are after a clean contrasting look without being too clinical.

A. The roof colour and the window joinery colours are earthy and warm. The colour you favour for the LINEA® - Resene Foundry - is not as harmoniously related to those colours as it could be.

If you changed it toward a slightly warmer charcoal it might look better balanced - i.e. Resene Nocturnal. I think the colour you have mentioned for the plastered surfaces - Resene White Pointer would work well. But if you can't bear not to have Resene Foundry on the LINEA® then you need to use a slightly cooler grey/neutral to work with it so it isn't the 'odd man out'. The following are some alternatives for you to check out – Resene Athens Grey or Resene Triple Black White.
