Q&A   p. 146

Please refer to the actual paint or product sample. Resene colour charts, testpots and samples are available for ordering online.

Q. We are painting our house exterior. The lower half colour choice is Resene Scarpa Flow. What would be a complementary white for the top half of the house?

A. It depends on how white you want the top level to be, and what works best with your window joinery. Try variants of Resene Sea FogResene Triple Sea Fog, Resene Double Sea Fog or Resene Sea Fog.

March 2025

Q. I am a painting my kitchen. The lounge is open plan so flows into the kitchen. The lounge is painted in Resene Quarter Lemon Grass. What would work for that for the kitchen?

A. You could consider taking Resene Quarter Lemon Grass through to the kitchen, or you could try Resene Quarter Linen.

Or you could team a white for the cupboards such as Resene Half Merino, Resene Quarter Joanna or Resene Black White – it really depends on what other whites – warm or cool you need to work with.

March 2025

Q. If you had to define Resene Scoria as either a red or a brown what would you say and why?

A. Resene Scoria is what I would describe as an earth red so it has a brown/muddy undertone.

Q. I need help to make a decision on the paint for the exterior of my split three level house. It is near the beach and gets lots of sun. It is partially clad in sections of Linea and party plastered concrete block. I wish to use two tones or separate colours, using the lighter colour on the Linea. I just want to freshen it up and make the most of the architecture. I quite like Resene Triple White Pointer for the Linear boards, but am not sure of a darker complimentary colour/tone for the plaster walls.

A. Try Resene Triple White Pointer with Resene Cloudy or Resene Double Truffle, or you might like to try Resene White Pointer with Resene Cloud for a lighter combination. Resene Quarter Silver Chalice with Resene Triple Sea Fog is another option that might work for you.

March 2025

Q. I am considering painting my old bungalow Resene Half Villa White but am concerned that it will be too yellow or green rather than actually looking white. Our roof is Grey Friars and I was thinking Resene Silver Chalice for the shingles and Resene Quarter Villa White for the trim. These villa colours are the main colours inside as well and again I am worried they might be too yellow/green.

A. I think your colour combinations are lovely and Resene Half Villa White outside should not appear too cream or green. It really depends on adjacent colours – so it is worth trying – you could also try Resene Rice Cake or Resene Double Rice Cake. All colours appear lighter outside and a bit deeper inside generally – so Resene Quarter Villa White is better if you don't want too much cream but warmth – you might like to also try Resene Half Rice Cake inside. I would freshen up the trim a little with the Resene Rice Cake family by using Resene Alabaster. Resene Quarter Silver Chalice is lovely – it has a blue undertone.

Q. We are painting our two front south facing bedrooms (one is the master) and would love some help with a colour choice for the walls. The ceiling, wardrobe doors and windows will be Resene Half Black White. The rest of the house is painted Resene Quarter Foggy Grey and also Resene Half Black White on the ceilings, window, etc. We were going to paint the bedrooms with Resene Quarter Foggy Grey also but wondered if there was another colour.

A. Warm neutrals suit south facing bedrooms, try slightly warmer hues like Resene Quarter Perfect Taupe or Resene Half Truffle, both go with Resene Half Black White, or you could try subtle Resene Albescent White from the Karen Walker Paints collection although this may not be so great with Resene Half Black White you can probably get away with it.

I would paint both the same as the colours will look different in each room.

March 2025

Q. We want to paint the house in a light brown colour. I want a light brown, not too dark, not yellow looking but still kind of warm and kind of soft? Maybe this is a type of grey brown?

A. I suggest trying Resene Quarter Cougar, Resene Cloud or Resene Half Caraway for starters.

March 2025

Q. Can you please advise the closest powder coat colour you have to Resene Pearl Lusta?

A. You can specify Resene Pearl Lusta in Resene Powder Coating – you just need to specify the colour name and code: Resene Powder Coating Pearl Lusta Y94-018-087.

March 2025

Q. Please can you suggest colours. Our new roof and spouting are FlaxPod. The windows are a light/mid grey. Initially I thought something like Resene Rhino but now think it needs to be a dark colour matching the roof, such as Resene Element/Resene Half Ironsand/Resene Half Masala with a bright front door. This is a beach bach on the West Coast.

A. Try Resene Half Baltic Sea or Resene Fuscous Grey – they pair well with FlaxPod and will tone in better with your windows – for the front door being a coastal location try a bright yellow like Resene Wild Thing or a fun blue like Resene Picton Blue. You could try Resene Silver Chalice or Resene Half Silver Chalice to match joinery.

March 2025

Q. We are after help to select exterior colours for our extension. We have a Titania white roof and are after a matching but contrasting colour for the walls and a different colour for the trims. We are keen for something in grey/beige/green hues.

A. Try Resene Ash – it pairs well with Resene Titania. For trims I suggest Resene Merino.

March 2025

Q. I stained our cedar bungalow in Resene Pitch Black last year and am thinking of painting the garage in a shade of light grey or off-white. I'm wondering if you could point me to some white or light shades that would go well next to the Resene Pitch Black?

A. Try Resene Wan White, Resene Double Concrete, Resene House White or Resene Double Sea Fog.

March 2025

Q. We have a 1930s bungalow and are wanting to colour drench an east facing dining room, which gets early morning sun. We’re looking to use double Resene Rolling Stone. What are your thoughts on this colour with limited natural light. The room has three metre ceilings and polished wooden floors.

A. Yes, it should work fabulously – it depends on what the room is used for as Easterly light fades from midday – so if you have great artificial light at night – as close as possible to daylight so LED lighting is good, there should be no problem.

Also, I suggest trying Resene Dark Slate which is slightly bluer – to compare tones in the room.

March 2025

Q. We're looking to paint the exterior of our two storey weatherboard house. The roof, gutters and garage door are currently New Denim Blue and the window trims match. The weatherboard cladding, soffits and fascia are white. We are looking to keep the house white but change the garage door and window trims to Resene Grey friars. Would the New Denim Blue features look ok with Resene Grey Friars? What white would you recommend – Resene White?

A. Yes, they will work together, and it is a smart move as it will modernise the front area which is most seen.

It would work better if you painted the gutters Resene Grey Friars (easy if they are PVC) it will cover New Denim Blue quite well and balance the scheme – but if the access equipment is too expensive you could just leave them as is.

Resene White is a bit stark and bright – I suggest you try Resene Black White, Resene Sea Fog or Resene House White.

March 2025

Q. We are renovating a relocated house on a rural block in Canterbury. I am going for a palette of neutrals – I like natural materials and textures. The lounge and dining have vaulted Oregon pine ceilings (quite rich toned), with the 80s-style chocolate rough-sawn beams. I was considering staining these black at a later date. The lounge is split level, with a polished concrete (aggregate look) floor and the rest of the house will have wood laminate floor in a mid-tone. The bedrooms will be a mid-tone warm neutral wool carpet. The kitchen has quite dark laminate cabinets, colour similar to Resene Triple Napa. We are looking for advice on a wall colour in all rooms. The kids both want a white on the end bedrooms, which have west-facing French doors. I would like a couple of accent walls (lounge and first bedroom, which have sliders facing north). We have already started painting doors and trims in Resene Alabaster. Colours I like the look of on swatches include: Resene Bianca, Resene Merino, Resene Arrowtown, Resene Craigieburn, Resene Fossil and Resene Stonewall. But my mind is stuck trying to keep to 3-4 colours and work with the different light in different rooms etc!

A. Your design theme is gorgeous and will work well. I suggest a palette of these three colours – Resene Merino, Resene Half Arrowtown and Resene Half Gravel. You already have the dark cabinetry as a fourth colour and that’s fine.

The Resene Half Gravel is a greenish grey and ties back to the proposed black timber-stained beams – which is a good idea to tie in with the concrete. Resene Half Gravel could be for the first bedroom feature wall as it will counteract some of the northern aspect of light and it is good to repeat colours from the living to the master bedroom in some creative fashion.

Resene Half Arrowtown is a contrast to the kitchen cabinetry but in similar tones – warm and muddy – it might work well for the living room feature wall.

Resene Merino will work for the rest of the house including the bedrooms with Resene Alabaster trims/doors etc.

March 2025

Q. We are looking to paint our house. The main colour is Resene Triple White Pointer, with trims (boxed corners, window frames and sills) a light colour (Resene Alabaster or Resene Half Barely There). We are looking for an appropriate colour for our garage door, front door and decorative triangle area at the top – we would prefer a sage green colour, not too dark but not vibrant. The slight complication is that our roof is brown, so it needs to somehow tie in with this too.

A. I wouldn't highlight the garage door or gable with a sage green as they are not considered features so much as the front door – it may look like a mismatch to the roof and especially since the gutter above the triangle gable is brown.

You don't need too much more colour and once you do paint the entire house in Resene Triple White Pointer it will look great with the browns.

My suggestion is to paint the gable end and garage door a modern brown to tie in with the roof – Resene Ironsand or Resene Half Ironsand and paint the front door a green in a gloss finish to really highlight the entrance.

Try Resene Tom Thumb, Resene Cabbage Pont or Resene Paddock for sage greens. Resene Tom Thumb is a little more vibrant in sunlight but if you are only painting the door green it might work well.

March 2025

Q. Please suggest a paint colour to complement a Resene Scoria roof and red-brown brick two storey house? This would be for painting the Linea board house sides and dormers.

A. Try Resene Ash, Resene Quarter Arrowtown, Resene Tana or Resene Double Thorndon Cream.

March 2025

Q. I am presently painting my house. I have uses Resene Eagle for the deck and bargeboards and Resene Bandicoot for the cladding and white soffits. Can you recommend some roof colours that would suit please?

A. Try Resene Ironsand, Resene Karaka, Resene Half Gravel or Resene Squall.

March 2025

Q. We have a run-down crappy metal 1970s shed and carport that has been painted many times with many different colours by former owners. We don’t want to put an awful lot of money into painting it, but thought perhaps we could address the worst of it by painting the gutters and posts which don’t match the rest of the walls and are presently three different colours. We are thinking of picking up the red-orange almost rusty red of the new tips of the climbing rose on the shed wall and the bricks under the windows on our house.

A. Try Resene Scoria or Resene Hairy Heath.

March 2025

Q. We have our hall painted in Resene Shalimar, which we like. But for another bedroom in the house we think it will be too cool a colour. My question is, what would be the warm equivalent of Resene Shalimar?

A. You might like to try Resene Corn Field as it is a little creamier so that makes it warmer, or Resene Illuminate – but this is bright – but not as clear as Resene Shalimar, or a soft earthy lime yellow such as Resene Lemon Twist.

The above suggested colours should flow on from Resene Shalimar quite nicely, without looking too out of place.

March 2025

Q. We want to paint our house exterior, and would love some help on what colours go with our roof colour Ironsand. The exterior cladding is Rockcote, texture sponge. We also have a curved wall in our backyard made of this product. Our interior walls are Resene Quarter Parchment. We also have a fireplace surround in our lounge that we need to paint but are not sure what colour to do it.

A. For the exterior to suit the setting I suggest you try Resene Triple Truffle, Resene Castle Rock, Resene Half Ash or Resene Taupe Grey from the Karen Walker Paints collection.

The curved wall I suggest painting the same as the house. You may want to leave the eaves an off white if you choose one of the deeper tones.

For the fireplace try a complex neutral such as Resene Heathered Grey, Resene Kina Brown or Resene Stonehenge.

March 2025

Q. I have a Sandstone Grey roof and Titania aluminium joinery. The cladding is James Hardie vertical 400mm Stria. What colour should we paint the Stria? We wanted to paint a little bit of brick in the bottom floor in the same colour as the Stria also.

A. Try Resene Armadillo, Resene Gravel or Resene Double Tapa.

March 2025

Q. We are completing a new commercial building with Resene Triple Sea Fog internal walls and want to jump up a tone or two with the internal doors .

A. Resene Quill Grey is lovely and the next tone up from Resene Triple Sea Fog. Alternatively, try Resene Silver Sand which is a little deeper than Resene Quill Grey.

March 2025

Q. Our master bedroom is painted in Resene Kaitoke Green (all walls) with pine furniture. There is a small wall in the common area between master and second bedroom. I'm thinking maybe a lemon lime colour for the second bedroom or a cyan type colour. I'm open to suggestions. I need to tone through another colour for the open plan common areas.

A. It really depends on the aspect of light to whether a cyan colour or lemon lime will work best – both are suitable – cyan being cooler so it suits warmer/brighter rooms. Try Resene Aqua, Resene Staycation or Resene Transcend for the bedroom with Resene White Noise for the common areas.

March 2025

Q. What colours work with Resene Craigieburn?

A. This depends on what the application is but for exterior or interior accents – you could look at a paler variant like Resene Quarter Craigieburn, soft whites like Resene Quarter Villa White, blue greys like Resene Gunmetal, rich reds like Resene Pandemonium or grey greens like Resene Half Innocence.

March 2025

Q. I have a bungalow. The weatherboards are painted Resene Quarter Arrowtown. What is the best colour please for the COLORSTEEL® roof. I was thinking of Resene Grey Friars as the fence is grey? Also would white aluminium windows be ok?

A. Yes, Resene Grey Friars will work if the fences are grey tone.

Resene have powder coating colours – I recommend Resene Half Black White N94-004-096 – check out www.resene.com/powdercoating.

March 2025

Q. Can you tell me an interior paint colour that matches to Resene Dark Oak as we have decided to paint not stain.

A. Depending on the wood dark oak is stained onto – paint colours which resemble it are Resene Trek or Resene Half Hairy Heath – or even full-strength Resene Hairy Heath – these three colours are currently trending in interiors.

March 2025

Q. Our new roof and joinery is FlaxPod. I believe the Resene equivalent is Resene Element. I am looking for a lighter recessive shade for some exposed timbers adjacent to the FlaxPod which will be viewed from underneath looking up to the sky.

A. Resene Half Baltic Sea pairs well with FlaxPod/Resene Element. You might also like to try Resene Fuscous Grey which is a bit warmer and deeper. Any paler than these two and the colour will not be recessive.

March 2025

Q. I am doing major alterations to my house. The roof is black and the windows are matt black too. I am looking for inspiration for cladding colours. There are two types of cladding – the light area is Linea weatherboard and the dark is Axon panel. I am wondering what colours to use and should I do the bargeboards etc dark or light?

A. I suggest you paint the Axon Panels a softened black – such as Resene Element (warmish) or Resene Double Foundry (cooler ) or a charcoal such as Resene Foundry. For the Linea I suggest Resene Double Sea Fog, Resene Wan White or Resene Merino. I would suggest the bargeboards are dark to match the Axon Panels.

March 2025

Q. We have a toasted terracotta tile roof, brown gable ends and white brick house in a colour that looks like Resene Bianca. What colour would we used for the bargeboard and eaves? The spouting is white.

A. I suggest you repaint the bargeboard and the eaves a soft white so that it blends with the bricks but not too cream that the white joinery then becomes the feature, try Resene Quarter Bianca.

You might want to consider painting the brown gable ends a softer colour as well – such as Resene Tea or Resene Eighth Arrowtown.

March 2025

Q. I am having my small light filled two bedroom home repainted and am considering the following colours, do you think these would suit? I have mostly earthy colour furnishings. Lounge in Resene Double Merino, bedrooms in Resene Quarter Bianca and ceiling/trims in Resene Alabaster.

A. Resene Double Merino will pair with the earthy colours. It can appear warmer than it appears on the chart in certain lights.

Resene Quarter Bianca may be a bit too bright/clean. Try Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream or Resene Quarter Milk White.

Resene Alabaster will work, but there won’t be much contrast in the bedrooms. You might like to try Resene Half Alabaster as well and compare it with the other painted samples.

March 2025

Q. We are currently building new with the idea of painting our brick. Our joinery colour is FlaxPod which is the same as the roof. We have oblique vertical weatherboards in a couple of areas on our home. We want to paint the brick in a white but nothing too bright white. What would be some good matches?

A. Try Resene Triple Sea Fog – it is slightly grey. Or you could try the whiter Resene Wan White, or Resene Merino – also Resene Double Merino but this is a bit warmer.

March 2025

Q. We’re revamping the entire interior of our 1995 home. We’re starting with a large master bedroom, WIR and a new ensuite. I’ve used Resene Linen in our previous home and loved it. Would different strengths of this go with either Resene Alabaster or Resene Double Alabaster trims and doors (e.g. the correct toning) as well as ceilings?

A. Yes, different strengths will pair with Resene Alabaster, – I suggest if you are going to use the lighter variants to go with Resene Alabaster if you want more of a contrast compared to Resene Double Alabaster.

You might want to use the lighter variant – in rooms where light is low – or even try Resene Half Linen so the colour is not too cool and sour in a south facing room, and Resene Quarter Linen in a hallway for example with full strength in an open plan brighter space.

What worked in one home doesn't necessarily work in another, so you will need to check on how the colour appears in each room as most homes have a different layout, windows, joinery colour, flooring colour etc. and the natural light can be different in the way it enters the home.

March 2025

Q. We are reroofing a bach and need a good colour match for the new Gull Grey roof. We are thinking a light beige or some variance of white. The joinery is a light yellowish, beige colour. The fascia and deck posts and balustrade are a bright white – I think its Resene Alabaster white from memory! The brick we also might end up plastering over so that will end up a similar colour to the roof I expect.

A. If you paint the brick and garage doors in Gull Grey (Resene Atmosphere) then you can go paler on the weatherboards. Otherwise, the house might look too bright all white.

It is tricky for me to see the window joinery so these suggestions might not be quite right, but it is somewhere to start, and they generally pair with Gull Grey. Try Resene Quarter Silver Chalice, Resene Triple Merino, Resene Triple Black White, Resene Quarter Delta, Resene Quarter Ash, Resene Athens Grey or Resene Quarter Foggy Grey.

March 2025

Q. I have painted the roof Ironsand and one exterior wall in Resene Triple Spanish White. I have made a mistake – I am not happy with the exterior wall colour, the roof is fine. Can you advise a a neutral that isn't too bright that would create glare, not too grey as we have a lot of surrounding concrete, not too green because my partner doesn't like it.

A. Try Resene Double Merino – it is slightly lighter but not glary – it is warm but not too yellow and not green – it works with Resene Ironsand.

March 2025

Q. We would like to paint our bedroom in a sage green colour but are having trouble finding the perfect shade. We have a forest green headboard to tie in with it. We have looked at Resene Beryl Green and Resene Half Beryl Green but are worried they might have a bit too much of a yellow tinge to them. Could you please tell me if once painted they do have a yellow tinge, and suggest any other colours we might try? We have wondered about Resene Harp. We have also tried Resene Quarter Robin Egg Blue but this was too blue-ish.

A. The greens you are looking at are not true sage greens and yes Resene Beryl Green does have a hint of yellow, this can be enhanced with certain aspects of lighting – you may need to go for more of a grey green and then with the natural light hopefully it will appear greener.

Try Resene Green Spring, Resene Secrets or Resene Bud.

March 2025

Q. I want to repaint the exterior of our house to be more modern and fresh to put on the market. The dark roof and windows need to stay the same colour, including the sills on the top level. I was thinking an off-white like Resene Half Sea Fog but may need to bring the terracotta in somewhere else.

A. With the dark windows I think a deeper shade of white will suit better or even a soft taupe. Resene Half Sea Fog will be quite bright outside. Try Resene Merino, Resene Double Merino or Resene Quarter Taupe Grey. It will be good if you can paint the balcony as well all one colour.

I suggest painting the sills the same colour as the trims – this is more modern and as you don’t have sills on your top level it will balance better. Resene Quarter Merino will give good contrast without being too white.

March 2025

Q. I am building a house. I have chosen my garage door as a COLORSTEEL® Slate. What is a complementary Resene colour that I can apply to the weatherboard walls that is similar to Slate?

A. Resene Porter is the equivalent of Slate – but it is a dark colour – and dark colours are not recommended for new weatherboards unless it is Linea or one of the other approved claddings for using dark colour. Traditional weatherboards have an LRV of 45% (you might want to check this out) which is quite a pale colour.

Pale colours which work with COLORSTEEL® Slate are: Resene Cloud LRV 58%, Resene Eighth Arrowtown LRV 54% or Resene Foggy Grey LRV 47%.

March 2025

Q. I am getting a white kitchen with a grey and white benchtop. In an open-plan lounge dining we are installing laminate floors (dusk oak) and I don't know what white or other light coastal colour to use.

A. You really need to pull colour from somewhere to decide what coastal colours to use as tones are important – do you have a favourite accessory which has coastal colours, this could be a cushion, art, object etc – or what colours do you love – perhaps do some research into coastal schemes, as your kitchen colours will work with so many colours.

For a white it depends on the type of white for the benchtop but generally whites that are cooler tones pair well and then you have the oak flooring to create warmth. Consider Resene Half Black White, Resene Sea Fog and Resene Alabaster.

Think about bringing through hues like Resene Half Periglacial Blue, Resene Quarter Robin Egg Blue, Resene Breeze, Resene Morning Haze and Resene Jet Stream and perhaps a warmer soft grey like Resene Quarter Foggy Grey – you can then bring in pops of brighter or darker colours if desired. I recommend sticking to a palette of four main colours including a white.

March 2025

Q. We have a lifestyle block on the West Coast. Our home of the last 10 years is a bungalow style and just on 100 years old. It has two bay windows on east, facing the main road, leadlights intact at top, one further on the south side. The northern aspect has a rather grand portico main entrance. There is a slightly set back more recent addition which has a veranda, and is where the sliding door and usual entrance is located. Further along the veranda, there are three more dark brownish painted doors.

It sits amongst gardens and paddocks and has quite a few mature trees around it, including a 100 year old, huge, red/pink flowering Rhododendron plus others. The roof is Pioneer Red, walls Resene Gin Fizz, grey on the entrance portico and skirt and the doors and trim are a dark chocolate-reddish colour. We have just installed Alpine White double glazing.

I am not keen on the roof colour, but cost means we will probably leave it as is. As an aside, is it ok to paint COLORSTEEL®?

What colour scheme options can you suggest for the exterior to go with the Pioneer Red?

My husband wants something 'bright and fresh looking, not old and dull' while I would prefer it blended with the environment. If we change the roof to a dark grey, what exterior colour scheme would you suggest?

A. Yes, you can paint COLORSTEEL® – the roof needs to be properly prepared first.

With the Pioneer Red roof warmer whites, warm greys or greens work well. Try Resene Merino, Resene Stepping Stone or Resene Terrain. You could use Resene Alabaster for doors and trims and soffit or keep the doors a darker green such as Resene Half Karaka.

With a change of roof to a grey – try Resene Ted, Resene Triple Black White or Resene Kangaroo, with Resene Alabaster doors and perhaps a charcoal on the doors such as Resene Solstice.

March 2025

Q. We are building a 60 square metre house for my mother to live in. She chose the front of house vertical pine boards to be stained in Resene Limed Gum. We are looking for side walls and back of house colour. These three walls are done in Weathertex – a vertical board product. The boards are primed but now need painting. The roof and window frames are FlaxPod.

A. That’s a lovely setting for your mother to enjoy, I think an earthy colour like an olive blend, or a softer greyish green could blend well. Try Resene Ash, Resene Double Ash, Resene Triple Ash, Resene Cobblestone or Resene Dragon.

March 2025

Q. I need some advice regarding exterior colour schemes for our 1960s weatherboard/summer hill stone house (with 1980s additions). Our roof has recently been redone, the colour is Grey Friars. I am leaning towards going fairly dark e.g. Resene Karaka and Resene Squall but am open to lots of ideas. A lighter green potentially?

A. The greens you like (Squall and Karaka) don't really sit well with Grey Friars, but cooler greens do – check out Resene Jurassic, Resene Dark Slate or Resene Exactly. Also consider something like Resene Rolling Stone. The green in the colours will become more evident in natural light – I quite like the complexity of the colours.

I suggest you paint the bargeboards, fascia and soffit a white like Resene Alabaster – but don't highlight the present grey concrete or timber trims.

March 2025

Q. Will Resene Half Alabaster internal walls go with cream aluminium window frames?

A. It is a little too white for the windows I think – it will make the windows appear more cream.

Full strength Resene Alabaster will be better or Resene Half Sea Fog – these two might be worth trying – preferably if it is a sunny space, as they will appear a little warmer again.

With cream windows – depending on how cream – I generally advise to use a warmer white.

March 2025

Q. We would like to change the colour of our house. Our fence is Resene Foundry, and we'd like to keep this and paint out all the green in Resene Foundry too. Which colours could we replace the green on the house with?

A. Try these colours for the boards: Resene Silver Chalice, Resene Double Concrete or Resene White Pointer.

March 2025

Q. I have a bathroom with Resene Half Spanish White walls and similar coloured floor tiles. Unfortunately I chose a beige carpet with a pink undertone which looks terrible next to the bathroom, but works well with Resene Quarter Tea in the opposite rooms. What neutral paint would be good for the hallway to ease the transition from Resene Quarter Tea to Resene Half Spanish White and go with the carpet? The hallway is currently painted in Resene Soapstone which goes well with the carpet but not with the bathroom. I was thinking the hallway could be Resene Merino instead? The ceilings and trim are all Resene Quarter Bianca throughout the house.

A. Resene Merino is a bit too dirty next to Resene Half Spanish White and the pink/beige carpet.

Try Resene Albescent White or Resene Half Albescent White from the Karen Walker Paints collection. I do think the full strength might work better as it might absorb some of the pink, where the lighter you go the more reflection, you will have.

If neither work – you could opt to keep it simple and try Resene Half Bianca or even Resene Bianca, but it might be a bit yellow. However, in low light this is not always the case – plus the Resene Bianca family is great at giving the illusion of illuminating the space.

March 2025

Q. I need help to decide on a colour to paint a large wooden deck. It is already painted. The house colour looks like Ironsand and the joinery is possibly Desert Sand.

A. Try Resene Half Taupe Grey, Resene Kensington Grey or Resene Friar Greystone.

March 2025

Q. What would be the best green colour to go with Resene White Pointer?

A. Try Resene Xanadu, Resene Quarter Karaka or Resene Karaka for a deeper green.

March 2025

Q. I am keen to get advice on a wall colour for the bedroom in my recently built tiny home. I’m thinking a dark/lush green to complement the dark grey (Resene Boris) walls in the bathroom, as you look through from the lounge. I want the view out to the trees to pop more. The walls in the bedroom are all painted Resene Merino and the ceiling is Resene Half Merino. At this stage I am thinking of just having a feature wall behind the bed. But it could be two walls, with the second wall painted having the double doors, and again, lots of greenery as the view.

A. Resene Boris is a fabulous colour. Try Resene Bush or Resene Forest Green.

March 2025

Q. I want a dark inky blue that is modern and contrasts well with a pink vanity. I have tested the colour Resene Jaguar however is was too dark and could only see the black. We definitely want to be able to see the blue.

A. The colour has a blue violet undertone, so I can see why you went in the direction with Resene Jaguar. Try Resene Black Rock, Resene Midnight Express or Resene Bullitt. Resene Revolver would look lovely with a dusted pink and is a colour that is on trend at present but is more grey violet.

March 2025

Q. I am wishing to paint my home black and white with maybe a grey on trims although they are aluminium. Would you kindly suggest exterior colours including roof?

A. I would tend tom use a soft grey white on the cladding like Resene Double Sea Fog to tone a bit more with the aluminium, plus this colour will brighten outside at times, and bring in a brighter white, such as Resene Alabaster a popular trim colour for the fascia, bargeboards, gutters and pergola with a black roof like Resene All Black to match the fences, with the carport following suit. The deck I suggest painting a silvery grey like Resene Atmosphere.

March 2025

Q. I need to get a roof restoration done on our new house. I can’t decide on a colour scheme for the roof and exterior to freshen it up. I’m looking for advice on colour combinations which pair well with our brick exterior. We have been thinking of similar colour schemes based on brown undertones, but also contemplating something based around COLORBOND® Woodland Grey for the roof and guttering, simply because of the ubiquity of suppliers for guttering/downpipes/fencing etc in the COLORBOND® colours. We have cream joinery. The windows are wood frame, so we're also looking to paint them too.

A. You can either go dark or stay light – whatever colour you choose it also needs to work with your cream joinery. I suggest for the facias/bargeboards and soffit to paint these a warm white to tie in with the windows (but doesn’t have to be as cream). Try Resene Villa White or Resene Half Villa White.

For the weatherboard cladding try Resene Caraway, Resene Half Caraway, Resene Half Bison Hide, Resene Half Masala or Resene Bokara Grey.

One of these colours will work with Ironsand for the roof and garage door.

If using Woodland Grey then you could try Resene Double Ash, Resene Tapa or Resene Half Tapa.

For the windows and trims I suggest a cooler white which still pairs with the brick – Resene Merino.

Q. I have a relatively standard polished light grind concrete floor through the house, and am trying to pick the correct neutral whites for walls and trims/ceilings to blend this floor with Genia burnt ash wood detailing and prime baroque. As it currently stands I'm tossing up between something from the Resene Wan White, Resene White Pointer or Resene Merino families but am open to better suggestions.

A. I suggest trying Resene Wan White or Resene Half Sea Fog – with lighter variants for trims etc, that would be Resene Quarter Wan White or Resene Alabaster.

March 2025

Q. I have an open-concept kitchen, dining and living area in a South-facing Queenslander. The new kitchen cabinetry is in Resene Peace (Quarter Paddock) and Resene Half Tea. I am looking for a suitable white colour for the walls that is fresh, yet warm, and does not throw much yellow or green. I have tentatively selected Resene Black White but I'm questioning whether this colour will throw too much shadow and starkness. I am also considering Resene Half Merino, Resene Quarter Merino and Resene Half Wan White. What colour you would suggest for the walls, as well as a complementary white for the skirting and trims?

A. Resene Black White will appear cooler and shadowy in a south facing room.

I suggest the deeper variants for the walls to keep the warmth as these colours won't appear yellow in low light – Resene Merino with Resene Alabaster for skirtings and trims to keep it fresh and bright or Resene Milk White with Resene Quarter Milk White, for more of a cosy vibe.

March 2025

Q. What neutral colour goes with Resene Wet N Wild. I don’t want white. Does Resene Quarter Biscotti work?

A. Resene Quarter Biscotti might be a bit too soft and pretty. White works with brighter blues because of the stark contrast so a deeper neutral is better if you don't want white or off white. Try Resene Cloud, Resene Fossil, Resene Half Tea or Resene Creme De La Creme.

March 2025

Q. I have a square front villa/cottage. It faces north. The exterior colourway is Resene Half Spanish White, with Resene Alabaster trim and Resene Bush Green accents. The entryway and most of the living areas on the south side are painted Resene Sisal. Immediately to the left and right of the front door are two bedrooms. One is painted Resene Tussock (a vibrant mustard, with windows facing the veranda and also east) and the other is Resene Sisal (windows facing veranda and also a high window that faces west). I would like to refresh the colours in these two bedrooms. I am thinking a subtle green for the Resene Tussock room. I'm not sure about the bedroom on the west side. All trims around the windows will be painted Resene Alabaster.

A. For the east facing room a green with warm undertone like an olive will work best so that when the light fades in the afternoon, you still have the warmth of the golden tint – greens and blue greens can be enhanced in east facing rooms, and the cooler greens may feel less cosy. A mid green might work better for this room.

Try Resene Contour, Resene Earthstone or Resene Coriander and consider a warm green beige like Resene Thistle. This can look stunning in traditional rooms.

For the west facing room try a duck egg grey like Resene Tiara could work or a green duck egg like Resene Half Periglacial Blue or Resene Half Robin Egg Blue to counteract the warmth and rosy glow of west facing rooms.

Q. We need colour options for a new dominator door to complement our red brick house. We are changing the colour roof as well. We would like your expertise advice on colour options. Do we keep the lower base colour of the house? What in your opinion would give our house a more updated look.

A. FlaxPod (Resene equivalent if painting the roof is Resene Element) or Ironsand looks great with red brick, for the roof and garage door – for the base I suggest modernising the overall look with a taupe such as Resene Triple Truffle or Resene Taupe Grey.

March 2025

Q. I want to paint the plaster walls near my swimming pool. I love Resene Destiny, but it looks too light on the wall outside in the sun. Do you have a colour like Resene Destiny, but darker?

A. These are a little different but similar in tone – possibly a bit bluer or greener, however, Resene Destiny is a fabulous colour. Try Resene Unite, Resene Juniper, Resene Thor or Resene Wishlist.

March 2025

Q. We are about to commence renovations on a 1960s rural house and I want to decide on a colour scheme at the outset. We plan to restore the matai floorboards throughout. I’m anti-bland (ha!) and keen to use beautiful calm colours to complement the rural setting (cosy rustic farmhouse vibes). And maybe a fun hit or two of something deep. I’m drawn to greens, maybe a brown, a neutral and a terracotta? I like the Karen Walker Paints story 4 but warmer. I’m very open to suggestions!

A. Bringing the outdoors inside is a great idea in a rural location – check out the Resene Botanica wallpaper collection online or at your local Resene ColorShop. It has some great vintage/neutral prints, plus plain textures if you want to go that way – wallpaper adds dimension to a space.

I suggest trying a palette of Resene Rebel, Resene Tuscany, Resene Vantage Point, Resene Half Linen and Resene Merino.

March 2025

Resene Wan White is like the Resene Sea Fog family so any paler variant of Resene Sea Fog through to Resene Half Alabaster and even Resene White will pair with it.

You could also look at Resene Double Alabaster, Resene Alabaster, Resene Half Alabaster and Resene White depending on how much contrast you like. Whites on standard height ceilings do tend to appear in shadow so the whites do look a little darker than they would on trims.

March 2025

Q. What colour would go best with the grey concrete bricks we have? We want to paint our garage and the concrete base of our house.

A. To complement the brick and grey joinery I suggest using a warm grey. The garage is generally painted to match the roof or if this is not the best option, then paint it into the base colour.

Try Resene Quarter Masala, Resene Quarter Silver Chalice, Resene Quarter Tapa or Resene Quarter Foggy Grey.

March 2025

Q. I am painting the interior of my house in a piecemeal fashion. The bathroom walls are in Resene Half Rice Cake and a bedroom has been painted in Resene Ottoman. The Resene Ottoman was chosen in haste (before lockdown) and while I like the colour, I'm a bit stumped on how to co-ordinate it with other colours for the main areas of the house. It’s a bit of a chameleon and I'm unsure if it's a warm or cool colour? I'm planning to paint another bedroom with the Resene Ottoman I still have, however this room comes off the hallway and is right near the front entrance, so I would like to pick a suitable hallway colour before launching ahead. The hallway is quite dark with the light source coming from door end. The door as well as the adjoining soon-to-be painted bedroom are on the west side of the house. What lighter colours would you recommend for the hallway walls that will look good against the Resene Ottoman room? And what white would you recommend for the ceiling, trims and door to go with Resene Ottoman? I would like to use this same trim and ceiling colour through the hallway and rest of the house if possible.

The house is a villa with a Karaka roof and the exterior is painted in Resene Castle Rock with Resene Half Merino trims. We are planning to install wood laminate through the hallway and main areas and new carpet and drapes in the bedroom.

A. Resene Ottoman is a peppermint green, so it is considered a cooler colour – however, don't despair as mint greens are coming in! Pair Resene Ottoman with Resene Bianca for the hallway – which is a popular warm off white for villas as it is great for illuminating low light areas without appearing yellow. You could also try Resene Half Bianca if the full strength is a bit warmish for you. Both options pair with Resene Ottoman, as they are not too cream and are on the cleaner scale.

Resene Alabaster will pair for the ceilings and trims throughout the house.

March 2025

Q. I am painting my walls with Resene Black White. I would like to paint the window frames, doors, skirting boards etc a lighter neutral colour. What colour do you suggest?

A. Resene Alabaster in a semi-gloss finish, such as the popular Resene Lustacryl, looks great with Resene Black White, or you could try the brighter Resene Half Alabaster.

March 2025

Q. We are intending painting the inside of our home. The colour choice for the walls is Resene Merino, with Resene Quarter Merino for ceilings. The doors we want to use either Resene Double Merino or Resene Triple Merino. What should we use for the door frames, windowsills and skirting boards?

A. I suggest Resene Half Merino in a semi-gloss finish – Resene Lustacryl is the preferred product for woodwork, this creates further contrast and generally the walls are low sheen.

March 2025

Q. We would like to paint our 10-year-old son’s bedroom. It is quite a dark room as all the neighbour’s trees block out the light coming in the window. We are painting the ceiling in Resene Alabaster. What colour would you recommend?

A. I suggest Resene Half Rice Cake – it has a slight warmth to it and is very good at toning down any green influence outside.

March 2025

Q. I am going to paint my walls Resene Half Thorndon Cream. What colour should I use for the window frame? The windows are entirely wood. I thought a lighter version of Resene Half Thorndon Cream for the windows and trim in grey. I have furniture in Resene Dark Knight.

A. Do you want to highlight the windows – are they a feature? What view do they look to – if there is a nice outlook in your opinion, then you do have the option to paint them the same as the walls.

If you prefer a contrast, then yes a paler variant such as Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream might work – you need to go two shades lighter to see good contrast.

March 2025

Q. Our house weatherboards are painted in Resene Cloud, with the trim in Resene Eighth Rice Cake and the foundation in Resene Concrete. Can you suggest what we should use on our back deck? The roof is Permanent Green and the back fence is black.

A. Try Resene Double Stack or Resene Stack might work – but is bluer.

March 2025

Q. I am painting the exterior of my 1980s Lockwood house which has a mix of brown cladding and a beige brick. Leaving the brick as is, which has a dark brown/red stain between bricks. I am trying to find a colour to complement the brick, moving away from the brown. The cladding is already prepped as some needed to be replaced.

A. Try Resene Tapa, Resene Quarter Masala or Resene Triple Truffle.

March 2025

Q. I have painted the ceiling white and what a difference. The room is so much lighter and brighter already. We would prefer not to paint the walls an off white colour but are thinking about a Mediterranean colour. From the Resene Shilo pink foyer you walk straight into this room. It is L shaped. The length is about 12 metres, the width about 6 metres, the height is 2.60. There are floor length windows and glass French doors opening onto a large enclosed courtyard. The courtyard has a fountain, lemon trees, Cyprus trees, herbs, dining area and outdoor seating area. We like Resene Rose Bud and Resene Valencia and wonder if a cross between the two would work.

A. I think that’s a fabulous idea and the colour will pair well with Resene Spanish White too. The room’s design and outlook certainly sounds like it will lend itself well to a Mediterranean colour.

Resene New York Pink or the slightly muted Resene Florentine Pink sit between those colours, however, I quite like Resene Dawn Glow and have seen it in a sitting room with trees as an outlook.

The other option is to go full mediterranean and do a wash of Resene Dawn Glow or a hue like Resene Sunglo over a tan base like Resene Cashmere and if you wanted to – you could do a second wash over the top of Resene Spanish White.

You can investigate limewash effects on the Resene website and practice the technique on card or board using testpots and Resene FX Paint Effects Medium or hire a professional once you like the look of the combinations.

These effects are all coming back into fashion – texture and pattern.

Resene Sandtex is a mediterranean effect which gives a faux plaster texture to the walls before applying colour – it can be applied with a brush or roller – some colours can be tinted to Resene Sandtex or an additional topcoat may be required – this can give an added dimension to these colours and the room overall.

March 2025

Q. My 1920s style house is currently painted in Resene Double Pearl Lusta, and I will be repainting the roof with Resene Ironsand. I am currently repairing the windows (which are currently painted the same colour as the house, with the sill the colour of the roof). We have stained glass in some windows. Could you recommend colours to consider when repainting the exterior window frames.

A. As you have stained glass features and the character of the house/cladding – I suggest going a brighter white on the window frames and keeping the bottom sills (face of sill and ledge) in Resene Ironsand. This way the lovely windows will be highlighted, and it also means less maintenance, as white is the most reflective colour.

I recommend trying Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta in a gloss finish (Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel) if the windows are going to be repaired to a good finish. Or you could opt for Resene Lustacryl the semi-gloss version.

March 2025

Q. What colour suits an ex state house with terracotta roof tiles. It's currently a yellowy cream which I don’t mind but I’d like ideas how to modernise it.

A. Colours which are being teamed with terracotta roofs today are duck egg blues like Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue, or smoky green greys like Resene Tapa and Resene Ash, for trims with any of these colours I suggest Resene Alabaster – this is for the windows, guttering and eaves.

The fascia and bargeboards which will look nice highlighted in Resene Alabaster, and the picket fence/railings will need to change to Resene Alabaster to work with the new colours.

March 2025

Q. I need suggestions for colours to paint in Resene X-200 paint over the raw brick for weathertightness. I’m thinking a light colour as dark could look dingy being set down from the road. The colours that have come to mind to date are Resene Double Merino and Resene Barely There.

A. Resene Barely There is a good option, I also suggest trying Resene Triple Black White and Resene Half Concrete which have a bit or warmth but a little bit greyer.

March 2025

Q. I am thinking of using Resene Clotted Cream gloss for the outside of my Queenslander so it is long lasting and easy to clean. What should I do my window trim in? I kind of want it to look like an old-fashioned cake.

A. Resene Clotted Cream is a perfect option for a sugar and spice theme – or you could look to Resene Solitaire which is a current version. Try Resene Alabaster for the icing on the cake – the trims or for a warmer trim colour and a bit less contrast – try a light cream like Resene Bianca or Resene Half Pearl Lusta.

March 2025

Q. Our property is a rental and having new plaster cladding installed (was a 90s plaster). As such we would like a colour that would be low maintenance and not attract too much heat for the longevity of the cladding. The window joinery is COLORSTEEL® Mist Green. The new guttering installed will be Titania.

We would need cladding, soffit and maybe the wooden balcony poles/pergola and horizontal support colours. We’re keen to keep it simple.

A. The cladding including the balcony cladding I suggest Resene Double Sea Fog. The soffit, wooden balcony posts and support posts I suggest Resene Half Sea Fog.

You might want to paint the pergola to match – Resene Half Sea Fog but not overly critical, but if you do then the front door colour might also need to change.

March 2025

Q. The exterior of our house is painted in Resene Half Lemon Grass with a Karaka roof and Resene Waiouru pergola. We are planning on repainting the interior of our house a warm cream/white. However the aluminium joinery (window frames, exterior door frames etc) is Arctic White. What interior colour would you suggest for the ceilings, walls and kitchen cupboards that will look ok with the joinery please. I have looked at Resene Half Merino and Resene Merino but wonder if they are a little too greenish? I am also considering a red front entrance door – perhaps Resene Shiraz?

A. The cool icy undertone of Arctic White suits cooler whites. Even Resene White can look a bit creamy next to it. I have found Resene Black White or Resene Alabaster to work best – or you could try a clean warm white like Resene Half Bianca. If you want to tie it into the exterior feel more perhaps try Resene Quarter Rice Cake, but it is not a perfect pairing. For the red try Resene Shiraz or Resene Arriba – a deep blue will work well.

March 2025

Q. I want to paint my large room – family sitting room/dining/kitchen. At present it is all one colour – Resene Spanish White – and is very gloomy. The ceiling, walls, architraves and woodwork are all the same. The paint is 24 years old and I want a fresher, brighter more modern look. The floor is a warm wood colour.

I have just painted the foyer, which leads into this room, Resene Eighth Spanish White on the ceiling and woodwork and Resene Shilo on the walls. I am hampered in that the doors are Resene Spanish White and as some are sliding doors I can't get them out so I don't plan on painting them. They are in excellent condition.

Can you suggest a colour which would work with this? The room is large, L shaped with lots of windows and therefore light.

A. When you choose to work with the Resene Spanish White family it makes it tricky to move away from this palette as it doesn't sit well with other neutrals, and then you have the pink to consider as well.

My suggestion is to just lighten the walls with a much paler variant such as Resene Quarter Spanish White, but if you really want a change you might like to try Resene Chalk Dust or Resene Half Orchid White. You just need to be mindful that these colours are not a perfect match and may bring out the warm undertones of the ceiling and doors, the ceiling is my main concern.

I suggest you paint A2 card with two coats of the three neutrals suggested – Resene Quarter Spanish White, Resene Chalk Dust and Resene Half Orchid White, so you can see what I am conveying and move them around the space.

March 2025

Q. We are planning on painting the exterior of our house and are looking for ideas on colour choices. The iron roof is Grey Friars and the aluminium windows are anodised bronze/brown, so I am looking for something to work with both of those colours. We would like it to look neutral, and prefer lighter colours (not black or dark grey) as I believe the lighter colours are longer lasting when painted. We would like to modernise our house yet play it safe and have something that is neutral.

A. The palette can be a bit limiting with two opposing colours as Grey Friars is from a blue base and then the bronze windows are warmer however, try Resene Half Ash a smoky green neutral or Resene Half Silver Chalice. Both colours have high LRV ratings so are not too dark, and colours will appear lighter outside.

I suggest to keep the scheme fresh and modern you paint the darker fascia boards and soffit Resene Alabaster.

March 2025

Q. I want to paint our area downstairs that is a self-contained unit with kitchenette. There are also two bedrooms. The flooring is hard wood (a warm colour). It can be a little dark in areas and I would like to have the ceiling and floor in a light warm colour.

A. Try Resene Half Rice Cake or Resene Half Merino – there are lighter variants, but I feel they may also be cooler as they are basically whiter.

March 2025

Q. I am looking at restaining my fence with Resene Woodsman oil based stain. My gate is powder coated FlaxPod. I was wondering what colour would be the closest.

A. Resene Crowshead should work.

March 2025

Q. I would like to make a modest vintage ‘gallery’ style wall in a small hallway. The hallway colour is currently Resene Half Athens Grey with a white ceiling. There is no direct natural light, some filters through from other rooms. I'm thinking of doing just one wall of the hallway (the others all have doors and doorways).

I would like the wall to be a warm, mid-toned green. I've got some old metal frames that I think will look good along it.

A. Resene Half Athens Grey pairs better with undertones of blue greens and some citrus greens – if you go for a mid-based colour this helps to retain warmth as there is less white, plus a lot of sage greens look greyer in low light rooms.

Ensure you have good lighting in your hallway or change the bulbs to a warmer light – also consider what pictures are within the frames. Metal frames are a great idea as metallic finishes also reflect light.

Try Resene Vantage Point, Resene Xanadu, Resene Smoky Green, Resene Pewter or Resene Field Day – more of a sage green to try.

March 2025

Q. I am looking for some advice on whether to paint the base of some exterior walls on our house a different colour from the top of the walls. The walls are painted Resene Triple Sea Fog and we love the colour, however the larger walls look a bit stark at the bottom.

Other colours used on the house are as follows – roof and balustrades in Resene Gull Grey and Linea board in Resene Gauntlet. We would appreciate some advice as to whether painting the base of the house a different colour would look good and if so what colour would you recommend.

A. So as not to disrupt the lovely flow and modern overall look, I suggest using just a slightly deeper tone – try Resene Quill Grey or Resene Silver Sand.

March 2025

Q. I have a new-to-us pole-barn style house that is in need of a coat of paint and lots of updating. The exterior is ply and batten, with a corrugated iron roof, using COLORSTEEL® New Denim Blue. The house is painted a traditional barn-red colour. I was going to do something more modern, but have decided to stick with the historic red-barn look. I was hoping to find a contemporary 'red barn' colour, but have only just learned that the roof is New Denim Blue. We also have very long, covered porches on each long side of the house, that I was planning to reroof in bronze polycarbonate. Bronze, because there is a lot of exposed wood under the porch. But now I'm wondering if I need to stick with a cooler colour theme and use the grey polycarb.

I also have a rear deck, currently painted orange-ish that I need a colour for.

I was hoping to use the roof colour for metal work and trim around the house, like light fixtures etc, but now I'm not too sure.

In summary, I'm looking for a barn-red colour, and a trim/fixture/deck colour.

A. Try Resene Scoria which is a traditional barn red.

For the fittings/trims etc I do recommend retaining New Denim Blue otherwise the blue will be enhanced with another colour – so to keep it consistent and flowing I suggest you stay with a cool palette for all other substrates, including the polycarbonate which isn't really a feature and will still work with the wood – which pairs with the red.

Sheen levels is a great way to enhance existing colours so trims etc are typically a semi-gloss, where the barn walls are generally a low sheen finish.

For the deck I suggest a grey such as Resene Half Tuna – colours look lighter on decks – but they also retain more heat, so I suggest a CoolColour paint for this colour.

March 2025

Q. We are specifying Resene Blackout for some joinery and wanted to confirm what the closest powder coat colour to Resene Blackout would be.

A. You can get Resene colours in Resene powder coating – this would be the closest way to get Resene Blackout. You can find more info at www.resene.com/powdercoating.

To specify, you just need to request from the powder coating supplier: Resene Powder Coating Blackout BR25-010-052.

March 2025

Q. I’m looking for a colour for my splashback which is quite large. It goes along the back wall of the kitchen then around the corner and under a window and above the sink. The wall is painted Resene Spanish White. The bench below is Laminex Cocoa sand which is off white with brownish grey very small flecks or dots. The splashback also butts onto Melteca Supreme Oak Organic cupboards.

The island in the middle of the room has a macrocarpa top and one side is in Laminex Kalamata which is a deep red/brown olive colour depending. I was wondering if maybe Resene Dawn Pink or Resene Dust Storm would look ok. I’m not really sure what colour to use as it is such a large area.

A. If you want a dusky pink colour then Resene Dust Storm is lovely – however colours do soften under glass and it is quite pink, where I feel a more neutral colour with a bit more depth and a slight pink undertone may work better and not date so fast – as splashbacks are not a feature you will change quickly. As they are quite visible the selection needs to be carefully considered – try colours such as Resene Tom Tom, Resene Otter, Resene High Tea or Resene Martini. As you have lovely organic features in the kitchen design, you could opt for a metallic finish – metallics are a great way to bring in a bit of life and reflection, and are not overwhelming with a larger splashback – you could choose a colour that matches (close enough) with your kitchen hardware or another option is to have the splashback the same colour as the walls so it becomes a function rather than a feature.

March 2025

Q. We are doing a renovation. The new roof is COLORSTEEL® Windsor Grey. We are looking at painting the house (Hardies and vertical batten) the same colour. Any thoughts on the front door colour and what the soffit colour could be?

A. For the soffit I suggest Resene Black White.

For the front door, a red like Resene Aroha, orange like Resene Ayers Rock, blue green like Resene Deep Sea, a golden yellow like Resene Fuel Yellow or you could paint it to match the soffit – Resene Black White. A gloss finish will look great.

March 2025

Q. We have a standard adult sized 6-seat old wooden outdoor picnic table that has been cleaned and dried, then a white undercoat and primer applied. We’d like to do a base colour of Resene She’ll Be Right all over, then do a few contrasting warm and brighter accents (probably hand-painted flowers or mandala patterning) on the tabletop. Is the above colour suitable for this project and is it available in your Resene CoolColour to reflect more heat? Also what pops of colour would you recommend for the accents?

A. Yes, all of our colours are multi-finish so they are suitable for indoor or outdoor application – it comes down to the product. Resene She'll Be Right is a beautiful teal blue and it does come as a CoolColour. You might want to investigate using Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen CoolColour or Resene Lustacryl CoolColour a semi-gloss waterborne enamel. Your local Resene ColorShop can show you samples of these products.

For the art try Resene California, Resene Citrus and Resene Quarter Pohutukawa, you might also like to bring in a white such as Resene Alabaster as a highlighter for the outer edges of the mandala or flowers.

March 2025

Q. I’m looking for an inside trim colour for doors, door surrounds and sills. My walls are Resene Tasman and the ceiling is white. I’m looking for a white/neutral colour that would lighten the grey they are currently painted and work with a grey carpet and blue/grey/black tiled floor. I’ve tried a testpot today of Resene Black White but wasn’t sure about it?

A. Resene Black White is perfect and what I recommend.

March 2025

Q. We have stained our house with Resene English Walnut CoolColour stain. The cladding on the house is Shadowclad (which I think is pine). We are now building a pine deck alongside it. What colour deck stain would fit with the Resene English Walnut stain of the house?

A. You can stain it the same colour as the house – Resene English Walnut – using Resene Woodsman Decking Oil Stain, or for a warm contrast try Resene Natural. It’s best to allow 2-3 months for the timber to weather before staining.

March 2025

Q. I got advice to use Resene Eighth Rice Cake as the main colour throughout the house. What is the best colour to use for the ceiling and trims? I want to create a crisp clean, modern look. Should I go for Resene Quarter Alabaster or Resene Quarter Bianca. I am worried Resene Bianca is too creamy and I don't want too creamy. I will have grey carpet and a light grey flecked sofa.

A. Resene Quarter Alabaster or Resene White are really the only two whites which will create a crisp contrast with Resene Eighth Rice Cake.

March 2025

Q. I am looking for a white suitable for exterior of house with an LRV of 75 or more. The roof and gutters are Sandstone Grey. The window frames are Ghost Grey Matt and possibly the garage doors also. We would like to create enough contrast with the window frames without it being too bright white.

A. I suggest Resene Double Black White or Resene Sea Fog – they will appear brighter and whiter outside. If either are not white enough for you – you could try Resene Black White but this is quite bright and can create glare.
