Q. Can you tell me if Resene Merino is warm or cold, please? I want something for my whole house and the living area is south facing and would like something soft and inviting that everyone can live with. We are going Resene Sea Fog outside. A. Resene Merino is what I like to term as in between cool and warm – it has a bit of warmth but also it has a green oxide undertone – but it isn’t as cold as some paler whites or grey whites – it can be manipulated with warmth by using a lower sheen level like Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen which is a low sheen, durable waterborne enamel, which means not only does the finish look better longer, which is important with whites, but it has a lovely subdued sheen which softens the glare associated to whites. Also dressing rooms with more texture like natural linens and warmer accent colours even if it is a colourful object will further impart warmth. For a slightly cleaner, lighter white which has some warmth try Resene Half Milk White – it will flow from the outside colour. September 2024 |
Q. I need to repaint my Linea weatherboards above my garage door and entrance. I have cream brick and the garage door is in Resene Gauntlet. Currently the weatherboards are in Masala, but I’m looking for a change. I was thinking of Resene Half Baltic Sea or Resene Mako. A. Resene Baltic Sea and Sandstone Grey pair well together – I think this will work very well for your house and will modernise it. September 2024 |
Q. Can you please advise what Resene Woodsman penetrating oil stain colour in your range would be closest in colour to COLORBOND® Monument? A. Resene Woodsman Shadow Match is the closest to pair with COLORBOND® Monument. Try the colour using a testpot as the timber colour will affect how the stain looks. September 2024 |
Q. I’m painting a villa interior and can’t pick between Resene Half Merino and Resene Half Sea Fog. Can you help? The lounge is painted Resene Log Cabin The dining room and kitchen gets lots of sun then down the end with hall is a bit darker and rooms quite light Also what colour would I do the ceiling and trims with either colour or do I do them all the same? A. Resene Half Sea Fog is a little warmer next to Log Cabin and it is light enough for all areas. For the ceilings and trims I suggest Resene Alabaster. September 2024 |
Q. We are doing an office space with one big feature wall in Resene Palm Green. We are thinking the rest of the walls will be a neutral white – but what white is the question. We had Resene Thorndon Cream walls and a Resene Rice Cake ceiling in our old house which was nice – but I’m unsure of what tones you’d suggest to pair with this green? We will probably be doing warm wood/vinyl flooring, and have brown leather couch and wood furniture. A. A modern look is Resene Quarter Ecru White for the walls and Resene Alabaster for the ceilings and trims is well suited for an office space. This combination will pair well with Resene Palm Green and wood tones. Resene Palm Green is a fabulous green. Alternatively, you might like Resene Black White for the walls with Resene Alabaster for the ceiling/trims. Resene Merino with Quarter Merino for the ceiling/trims may also be a consideration. September 2024 |
Q. We have a two storey house with a dark black roof. It has orange/yellow brick, wood vertical slats and concrete at the base. We are thinking of painting the vertical slats Resene Gum Leaf and the trim/windows/soffits etc in Resene Quarter Alabaster. Do you think this is too much colour? A. Resene Gum Leaf may compete with the brick. Consider a softer green such as Resene Lemon Grass or Resene Frontier, which contrasts but complement the brick. I suggest pairing these greens with a slightly warmer white like Resene Quarter Rice Cake. September 2024 |
Q. We have painted our house quarter robin egg blue. It is a stucco 1920s bungalow and I find it a little bit too 'pastel' green. We are looking for a couple of colours to off-set the green so it's not so prominent. We would like a white for the windows and have tried Resene Wan White but it is perhaps a bit too close to the Resene Quarter Robin Egg Blue and blends in rather than 'pops'. I've been wondering if Resene Quarter Merino or Resene Alabaster would be nice for the windows. For the features we'd like a deep dark colour, we have tried a lot of different colours and like Resene Mortar – but it's a bit lighter than what we wanted and there doesn't appear to have a double strength Resene Mortar. Any other suggestions that would offset the green so it's not so prominent? A. Both Resene Alabaster and Resene Quarter Merino bring out the green – I suggest you try Resene Half Black White. For the accent try Resene Diesel, Resene Chocolate or Resene Revolver as an alternative to Resene Mortar – although I feel this is a great match. You could also enquire at your local Resene ColorShop to see if they can have a sample of double strength Resene Mortar made for you. September 2024 |
Q. We have a 1970s weatherboard house. We are thinking of painting it Resene Bokara Grey with white window frames. What colour would you recommend for the roof? You can see a lot of the roof from street level. A. I suggest Resene Gauntlet for the roof. It is neither too pale or dark, and pairs well with Resene Bokara Grey. Resene Bokara Grey with white windows will look fabulous on your home. September 2024 |
Q. Can you please send us an option of white (light) colour options with 40% LRV. A. Nearly all the whites in the Resene Whites and Neutrals range have a higher LRV than 40%, which make them safe to use on multiple claddings. The best thing to do is to visit a Resene ColorShop and ask staff to show you the whites' palettes which have the LRV rating listed on the back of the swatch. Or you can find this information in the colour library online. It is best though to view physical samples of the whites. September 2024 |
Q. I am looking for a shade or two darker than triple strength Resene Cloudy that tones with Resene Half Bokara Grey but is somewhere between the two, for a plastered landscaping wall – the house exterior is Resene Cloudy but we need walls to be a bit darker. A. Try Resene Triple Stonehenge. September 2024 |
Q. I am trying to work out a colour for a bedroom that faces towards the sea to match melamine wardrobe doors in a wood grain Bestwood brand Vintage Ash or Simply Eucalyptus. We have sliding glass doors on the end. The wardrobe is the other end on the side. My partner was suggesting Resene Spanish White. He is wanting a kind of sandy colour for the rest of the house. I said if we go Resene Spanish White I would want half or eighth strength for the bedroom if you think it would go with the wardrobe doors and full or double for the lounge. Do you have any other suggestions? I was also looking at Resene Sand, Resene Truffle, Resene Napa and Resene Bison Hide. I think we like simply Eucalyptus the best but there are other colours. A. I recommend the Eucalyptus if you are going with sandy tones. Resene Spanish White might be a bit yellow – try Resene Fossil – it is a bit more current and there is a deeper shade (Resene Double Fossil) and paler variants. Resene Half Fossil might be lovely for the bedroom – the paler variants like Resene Quarter Fossil and Resene Eighth Fossil are sometimes tricky as they reflect any colour adjacent to them. The Resene Akaroa family might be another colour palette worth investigating – and Resene Half Bison Hide is lovely – although may not work as well with the melamine. September 2024 |
Q. We are doing a kitchen renovation and need to paint the kitchen and lounge. The kitchen will have modern stainless steel benches and we have rimu floors. We want a classic timeless look (a 1950s bungalow). We would like white cabinets and neutral walls. We definitely prefer warmer colours. The kitchen is currently yellow and green. The lounge is wallpapered a cream. The kitchen and lounge do flow into each other. Both have high ceilings. I want to keep it light and bright but not too stark! A. I suggest you don't go too pale as well. White on white is a great look in bungalows especially the kitchen with a stainless bench. It depends on how much warmth is revealed with the natural light to how much the white needs to be warm, so I am suggesting three different combinations. Try Resene Rice Cake for the walls with Resene Quarter Merino for the cabinetry/trims. (if Resene Rice Cake is too warm, try Resene Half Rice Cake). Or try Resene Merino with Resene Half Wan White for the cabinetry/trims – this is a slightly cooler scheme but still has warmth. Or try Resene Half Sea Fog for the walls with Resene Double Sea Fog for the cabinetry/trims – this is the coolest palette. Resene Half Sea Fog can be surprisingly warm in the right space and looks lovely with timber. Resene Double Sea Fog will take on the hue of the stainless. September 2024 |
Q. We are building a simple mono-pitch house at the beach. About the only thing we know is that we want white windows. The house is barn style so no opportunity to do two tones. We traverse between a white and black roof (today it is black!). We want (we think!) some kind of white on the exterior that is not too grey or too cream/yellow that will go with the appliance white window colour and won't have us reaching for sunglasses. A. Try Resene Sea Fog or Resene Double Sea Fog as all colours appear lighter in natural bright light. Resene Sea Fog is a versatile white which suits a beach environment, and it isn't too stark so won't produce much glare. September 2024 |
Q. We are renovating a bathroom. The wall sheets/tiles over bath/shower are a light grey. What colour neutral would make it feel warm but still look good against light grey? It’s south facing and small. I’m thinking a warm white but want to ensure it compliments the grey wall tiles. I will probably do trims/ceiling just the light (quarter) version of the wall colour. A. It does really depend on the undertone of the grey tile – this will influence how the warm white appears. To create more warmth consider using the one strength on the ceiling and walls. Try Resene Rice Cake and Resene Milk White. I wouldn’t go too pale in a south facing room as it risks looking sterile. Resene Space Cote Kitchen and bathroom is the preferred finish for bathrooms as it is a durable waterborne enamel, which means for whites the finish remains looking good for longer, and it has the added feature of mould inhibitors and antibacterial protection. September 2024 |
Q. I wish to paint a bedroom which is on the south side of my house and would like some colour advice. The windows do let in a good amount of natural light so it is not a dark room. The house is a character home built in the 1930s. There are rimu skirting boards and architraves and a small rimu cupboard in the bedroom. I was thinking of an off white colour to co-ordinate with the existing floral duvet and new Roman blinds which are yet to be made. Perhaps something in the range of Resene Quarter White Pointer, Resene Half Joanna, Resene Quarter Blanc or Resene Eighth Fossil. I have chosen calming, restful colours throughout the rest of the house: Resene Quarter Robin Egg Blue, Resene Quarter Beryl Green and Resene Quarter Powder Blue so would like a colour which keeps in this palette. I am very open to any colour that you think could tie the elements in the room together. It doesn’t have to be in the range that I have suggested but would like a soft, restful colour. A. I recommend Resene Half Fossil, Resene Quarter Fossil, Resene Half Tea, Resene Quarter Tea, Resene Quarter Truffle and Resene Half Albescent White. You could also try Resene Half Joanna. September 2024 |
Q. I am looking at painting the exterior of my home. The roof is a dark green and in good condition. What colours would you recommend for the exterior walls? Then house is a farm cottage so looking for something subtle that will fit in. A. I suggest a deeper earthier colour such as Resene Cobblestone, Resene Castle Rock or Resene Terrain – to give the house character and to fit in with the environment. I recommend you keep the eaves light – such as Resene Merino. September 2024 |
Q. We are painting the exterior of our house. We have put a COLORSTEEL® roof on in New Denim Blue so were thinking to paint the bottom trims of the house in this colour. We need a colour for the weatherboards to match this – previously we used Resene Black White. We will paint the chimney to match. Is there a different colour you would recommend for the weatherboards – still in the white family? A. Try Resene Half House White. This looks nice with New Denim Blue. You might like to pair it with Resene Quarter Black White for the windows and trims to really set it off. September 2024 |
Q. I have had a new dividing hardwood fence installed today on one side of my duplex as requested by my duplex neighbour The length is 10m. The back fence and opposite dividing fence are brush fences and will remain. The yard is quite small and typical of duplex properties. My question is, is it best to stain or paint? My side of the fence faces west and I think I would prefer paint due to the lower maintenance. I live on the coast and am only 200m to the beach and have a coastal colour scheme on my house and would consider similar if you think appropriate. Resene Double Tea and Resene Half Vanilla white might look good. A. I suggest a little deeper such as Resene Triple Tea or Resene Napa. Colours tend to appear lighter outside. September 2024 |
Q. What would be a good Resene white to go with Appliance White Matt aluminium windows? A. Try Resene Half Black White. As colour lightens in bright light you might also try Resene Black White. Alternatively, Resene have a Resene version of Appliance White which can be tinted for you at your local Resene ColorShop. September 2024 |
Q. I am painting the upstairs plaster finish of my house. It will include the garage door. I'm looking for a less cream/yellow but light colour for the walls and a contrast – maybe for the garage door and plaster panel above the windows on the lower bricked level. I would prefer a grey green tint for the walls – perhaps Resene Merino? Can you advise on wall colour and contrast that will look ok with the terracotta tiles on the roof? A. Try Resene Double Rice Cake – it is warmer than Resene Merino without being too cream and has a slight green undertone. September 2024 |
Q. I need help choosing a colour for the brickwork down the left hand side of our house and also for blockwork on lower level around the garage doors. The roof and aluminium joinery is in FlaxPod Matt. The garage doors will be replaced, possibly with FlaxPod. The timber is Abodo stained Patina Grey. A. Colours which work with FlaxPod are Resene Quarter Ironsand, Resene Half Baltic Sea, Resene Ship Grey, Resene Sandstone or Resene Tundora. Yes, I suggest you use FlaxPod for the garage doors. September 2024 |
Q. We are painting the exterior of our plaster two storey home with your product Resene X-200. We would prefer a French Parisian style white. Is that possible? A. A Parisian white is achievable – it is just a matter of choosing a white that you like, all whites are available in Resene X-200. Whites you might like to try are Resene Milk White, Resene Chalk Dust or Resene Half Sea Fog. September 2024 |
Q. We want to paint walls ceiling and trim using Resene Quarter Merino and Resene Half Merino. Should the ceiling and walls be quarter strength and the trim half, or the other way round? A. There are no hard and fast rules but generally colours including whites on ceilings appear darker to the walls, due to the way the light is seen in shadow, and if trims are painted darker than the walls this can enclose a room. Typically, most would paint the ceiling and trims Resene Quarter Merino and the walls Resene Half Merino. September 2024 |
Q. We are repainting our exterior and interior. The existing colour is blue with a grey roof. The interior is all Resene Quarter Spanish White. There is a green paint Resene have done a colour match on in the entrance. It is a very beachie house and would like help with some colour ideas. A. To get your decorating project started here are a few ideas: I suggest you soften the exterior walls – soft muted blues look lovely with dark roofs and relate to a beach theme – try Resene Dusted Blue for the exterior with Resene Half Merino for the trims. A half or quarter strength of the feature wall colour could be used elsewhere, such as in a stairwell. A soft duck egg could be used for bedrooms such as Resene Zumthor or a soft light beige such as Resene Truffle, both these colours could be incorporated into the scheme. For the base colour consider Resene Merino – it works well with greens and blues and is warm without being too yellow. Pair it with Resene Alabaster for the ceiling and trims. September 2024 |
Q. My kitchen is Resene Half Black White. What white would suit my walls, ceiling, architraves and skirting? A. I quite like Resene Alabaster with Resene Half Black White or if you want more contrast – Resene Half Alabaster – but this can be very white, depending on the light. Alternatively, if the kitchen receives good light you could opt for the deeper variant Resene Black White. September 2024 |
Q. I have just bought a plain light timber stool, which I am going to stain to be the same colour as my current oak hall table. I am unsure what colour stain to get for the stool to match exactly the hall table. A. It will be difficult to match a stain exactly to a natural timber like oak – but you may get a similar look. I suggest you visit a Resene Color Shop as they have samples of the stains on pine in store – which is a light timber and will give you a good indication of how the stain will look on your stool – initially, I suggest you investigate Resene Colorwood Natural and Ironbark. Enquire at the store about Resene Colour Enhance which you can mix with Resene Aquaclear to add colour to timber. I would start with a small pot of the Resene Colorwood stain first. It is going to be a trial-and-error process as stains are semi-transparent so they can be tricky to match because the timber will affect the colour. You might want to see if you can get an offcut of pine or similar timber to your stool to practice on. September 2024 |
Q. What is/are the best interior wood stain colour(s) to match Resene Whizz Bang? A. If it is for interior – then Resene Colorwood Satin Orange is the closest, but how it appears depends on the application – what type of timber etc. I suggest you test the colour first. If you need more depth, you can add Resene Colour Enhance mixed with Resene Aquaclear on top. September 2024 |
Q. We have a two level house. The house’s upper level is Resene Akaroa, the lower level blockwork was Resene Mondo. We have plastered the blockwork and will be repainting this. We are looking at colour options for this lower level that work with Resene Akaroa. A. Try Resene Stonewall – it is a softer look and might modernise the overall look. Alternatively, you could try Resene Pravda or Resene Half Sandstone – but they may be too brown. September 2024 |
Q. We are building a new house it will only be small. It is going to be white board and batten with black roof and door. The windows will be white (pearl I think). I love a more vintage older style and would like to use a bold wallpaper like Resene Wallpaper Collection E307300 in the toilet and then a few different panel products on a couple of the walls throughout the house. The main living area I was thinking of going Bianca but want a dark moody green for our second bedroom (which will double as a second living), darkish sage for our bedroom and a rich aubergine or plum as a feature in entrance. Thinking a dark grey and wood kitchen and bathroom. Any suggestion for paint colours to test out for the Dark Green, dark sage and aubergine/plum/wine would be appreciated. A. Your design plan sounds perfect, and the Resene Museum collection of wallpapers are fabulous! For deep greens and sages try Resene Forest Green, Resene Gordons Green, Resene Top Notch, Resene Cabbage Pont, Resene Paddock or Resene Rivergum. Wine reds to check out are Resene Incarnadine, Resene Pandemonium, Resene Transition or Resene Staccato. Resene Bianca, works quite well with bolder colours, and is great for illuminating light in a space. Resene ColorShops have a colour library of A4 paint swatches you can view instore. It’s a good idea to visit and then you can see how large swatches of the colour will go with the wallpapers in the wallpaper books. Resene Transition Resene Staccato Resene Pandemonium Resene Incarnadine Resene Top Notch September 2024 |
Q. We’ve just bought a lovely old (character!) house and want to paint the whole interior a warm white (it’s currently different bold colours in different rooms). I’m trying to choose a single shade of warm white that will suit all rooms – both on the sunny side and the south, and look good with white ceilings and the bookshelf. We are thinking modern and warm. I was thinking Resene Eighth Spanish White for its warm creamy/yellow tones but not too OTT. Do you have any other recommendations that work well (popular choices) for a whole house? Our painter says grey whites are more popular right now, but I really want a warm colour. A. The warmer off whites are trending at present and if you can find one that isn’t too yellow it can work in this instance, but light in every room is different – so in a South facing room, even a warm white can appear sterile, but you can manipulate the vibe by adding layers of texture and warm, earth toned colours for accessories. Try Resene Half Carrara or Resene Half Milk White. Resene Eighth Spanish White is often best used with darker and lighter variants of itself. September 2024 |
Q. What is the best exterior colour for a farm house that complements our black aluminium window frames. The roof is COLORBOND® Monument. I have looked at Resene Linen. This is a large sprawling double storey home approximately 30 years old and rendered concrete. A. I feel the colour needs to be a bit more earthy so that it links with the charcoal roof and black windows. Try Resene Terrain, Resene Half Copyrite or Resene Double Linen. Colours look lighter by up to 30% outside due to the bright sun. September 2024 |
Q. I am having kitchen cabinetry repainted. I have a splashback in Resene Chilean Fire and walls in Resene Alabaster. I have a natural wood breakfast bar and stainless steel bench, appliances, and some silky oak display cabinets and drawers. The blinds are a nice mid to dark grey. The floor is a laminate. I am struggling to pick a cabinetry colour to match the Resene Chilean fire splashback and stainless steel bench. We are selling the house soon, so it needs to be up to date without being too out there. The current deep blue/purple colour was lovely 22 years ago, but a bit out there now! A. Yes, if you are selling, a neutral will be better for the cabinetry so that it leaves the splashback to be the hero. Try a soft stone colour like Resene Half Cloud, Resene Quarter Cougar or Resene Half Tea. The colour will look different under the natural and artificial light of the kitchen, and it will need to pair with the floor as well, being in proximity – so I have given three different neutral tones to see what works. Alternatively, you could opt for a lighter variant of the wall colour – try Resene Half Sea Fog. September 2024 |
Q. We are building a weatherboard house with a Slate COLORSTEEL® roof and are wondering on the exterior colour. We are after a warm dark colour that doesn’t look grey. We have four samples painted at the moment, Resene Ironsand, Resene Porter, Resene Bokara Grey and Resene Element, but it’s hard to visualise what the whole house would look like. We are worried the Resene Ironsand may be too brown as when we see a COLORSTEEL® shed in that colour it looks too brown, but maybe the paint would be different? The Resene Porter matches the colour of the roof and we are worried it would need more of a contrast between the two? And we are worried the Resene Element and Resene Bokara Grey may be too black? Would you have any suggestions for us? A. Try Resene Boris. It is half strength Resene Porter and is a great colour – not as brown as Resene Ironsand, not as black as Resene Bokara Grey or Resene Element. It should give you the contrast you are looking for. Alternatively, you could try Resene Fuscous Grey. Ensure the cladding is certified for using dark colours – some substrates have LRV restrictions. Consider using the Resene CoolColour version of your colours to help reflect more heat. Resene Boris September 2024 |
Q. I would love some advice regarding paint colours for our windows, trims, soffits and ring foundation on our red (with browns) brick facade home. We have a new Flax Pod COLORSTEEL® roof and am stuck with what to paint the rest. We will be repainting all of the window frames soonish as some have been recently re reputtied and the paint from the steel frames are chipped, so may as well do the whole area at the same time. The soffit will hope fully be done right after as that’s peeling quite a bit. A. I suggest painting all substrates except for the brick and soffit Resene Element (the equivalent to FlaxPod). This includes the windows and panels above, guttering and fascia and the foundation. This will instantly modernise the house and tone down the dominance of the brick. For a softer alternative try Resene Baltic Sea or Resene Half Baltic Sea – they pair with FlaxPod for the roof. For the soffit – use Resene Half Sea Fog (if you are repainting). September 2024 |
Q. I am looking to have my ceiling be repainted which could mean that the walls may need repainting as well. We have quite a bit of light coming through some of the windows but I do have a nasty neighbour that is determined to block as much of my light as he can so that is why I have gone for a white ceiling and lights walls with a light grey carpet. I will have the option to change the ceiling colour if I like and I wondered as the light is slowly removed from my house what colour you would recommend I use on ceiling and wall to modernise it. At the moment I have Resene Quarter Tea. I have dark brown couches and a table with blue chairs and at the moment very old worn out curtains. The carpet is a light grey flecked in the light but a light brown in the shadow. A. To keep warmth in a low light room, but to brighten at the same time – I suggest you try Resene Merino or Resene Half Sea Fog. For the ceilings I suggest Resene Alabaster – this is not a stark white but still crisp and with a little bit of warmth. September 2024 |
Q. Our new addition includes a kitchen/lounge room/dining room. The windows are double glazed with black joinery. The flooring will be engineered timber blackbutt. The benchtops will be pearl white from Zenith Surfaces and I am looking for a contrasting colour. I would like to achieve a taupe colour palette. I want to go more for the brown taupes rather than grey. I looked at Resene Double Perfect Taupe for the island bench and Resene Half Perfect Taupe for the cupboards and a warm or crisp white for the ceiling and walls. But I am not sure. On the floor in the lounge and kitchen I will have rich coloured rugs – deep red, navy blue and tan colours. My lounge suite is navy blue leather. A. I believe your combination is fabulous! You might also like to try the warmer Resene Eighth Joss or Resene Quarter Joss for the cabinetry with Resene Jetsam Brown from the Karen Walker Paints collection for the Island. For the walls investigate Resene Quarter White Pointer or Resene Half Sea Fog – I wouldn’t go too warm or stark. You can increase the crispness by painting trims and the ceiling in Resene White. September 2024 |
Q. Our house is brick (close to colour Resene Alpaca, and the roof and windows are Resene Half Rivergum (a bit more faded). What colour shall we paint our new front fence 1.8m high to help tone down the pink/red tones of the house please? A. Try a deep grey with a green undertone – such as Resene Armadillo or Resene Double Gravel. September 2024 |
Q. I have painted Resene Seachange as a feature wall in the main bedroom. The curtains are similar to Resene Zumthor and the bedspread similar to Resene Breeze. I was looking at Resene Half Tea or a greenish colour like Resene Quarter Duck Egg. What do you think? A. Either will pair. Consider the natural aspect of the room – Resene Half Tea is warmer, or you could opt for a deeper variant – Resene Duck Egg Blue or Resene Double Duck Egg Blue which are warmer and balance well with Resene Seachange. Resene Duck Egg Blue or Resene Quarter Duck Egg will work if the main bedroom has plenty of light. Keeping the walls in the same family creates a modern feel. Resene Half Tea still gives a Hamptons vibe but can appear a bit more traditional. Resene Double Duck Egg Blue September 2024 |
Q. We have a west facing lounge with a lot of native bush outside and it’s quite close to one window. We have painted our walls in Resene White Pointer, our ceiling in Resene White ceiling paint, and currently have light green carpet (close to Resene Quarter Lemon Grass) which won’t be replaced for awhile. We also have aluminium Karaka green window frames (not our choice!!). We seek your help please as to which white would be best for our trim, doors and fireplace surround. A. I suggest you try Resene Quarter White Pointer, in a Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss finish. Try this with a testpot. If that doesn't work for you – Resene White to match the ceiling should pair for the window frames and trims – for the doors and/or fireplace you might consider Resene Half White Pointer. August 2024 |
Q. We’re doing a new build and we’ve chose Windsor Grey for our COLORSTEEL® roofing. What colour will match this the closest for our Stria cladding? And can you recommend a white for the soffits please? The contrast cladding is a natural concrete plaster. A. Resene Noir is the equivalent to Windsor Grey, you might like to also check out Resene Times Square for a softer variant. Resene Black White pairs well for the soffit. August 2024 |
Q. I have white (faux wood) blinds with dark grey aluminium frames and rather dated wooden sills. I want the house to feel really light and bright with a wall colour, something like Resene Cut Glass, to bring in the ocean view beyond. I am wondering what colour to paint the sills and if a colour like Resene Cut Glass works well throughout a home. A. Resene Cut Glass is quite popular for a Hamptons feel – especially for bedrooms. It combines well with Resene Alabaster for trims, depending on how warm Resene Alabaster looks next to the wooden blinds. An alternative is Resene Half Black White. You might also like to try Resene Duck Egg Blue, Resene Timeless or Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue for main areas as alternatives. Resene Timeless August 2024 |
Q. My partner likes grey walls for interior. I'm committed to a white ceiling, doors and trim. And I prefer warmer tones. The walls weren't great so we have put up anaglypta rather than plaster. What colours would you recommend to have a grey but still be warm? Or even have a feature wall that's warm. It’s a small house 100sqm with standard ceiling height. A. Try the Resene Truffle family – the lighter variants or Resene Eighth Friar Greystone or Resene Cloud. These are warm greys. August 2024 |
Q. We are repainting the interior of our 1960s home. We wish to repaint two bigger bedrooms – they are currently quite dark and really need lightening up. What colours would you suggest? Ideally we would like them both painted the same colours, something with a white colour scheme. A. Yes, I agree they need brightening, but also some warmth – as using cooler toned whites where there is low light can create a sterile environment for a bedroom. Try Resene Rice Cake or even the deeper variant Resene Double Rice Cake for warmth. You might also like to try Resene Merino. August 2024 |
Q. Can you please give me advice on a roof and exterior house colour? The aluminium joinery colour will stay the same and I will probably replace the garage door with a ranch slider. I will also replace the front door and get some kind of screening going up the ramp. I’d like something sort of mid grey and a darker roof. A. Try Resene Nocturnal for the roof and gutters, with Resene Half Fuscous Grey for the walls, or Resene Element for the roof with Resene Porter for the walls. Alternatively, you might like to try Resene Nocturnal for the roof and walls. I suggest keeping the soffit pale – such as Resene Half Rice Cake to tie in the windows and to keep the light reflected inside as the soffit are quite deep in areas. August 2024 |
Q. We are doing up our farm cottage. I have painted the walls in Resene Malta and Resene Half Spanish White trim. I was hoping to go a lighter matching colour in the bathroom and kitchen. The kitchen is the back half of the lounge painted in Resene Malta, so still one room but separated by a beam. A. You might like to try a paler variant of Resene Malta, however, sometimes these variants can take on an undertone of red, depending on the light. For a similar colour but slightly different tone – try Resene Half Drought or Resene Quarter Drought or Resene Tua Tua for the back kitchen with Resene Half Drought or Resene Quarter Drought for the bathroom. Q. I am going to repaint windows trims, the ceiling and change the door to white as well. If I use Resene Half Rice Cake, is it ok to paint ceiling with same colour as well? Or do you suggest painting the ceiling Resene Alabaster? In the kitchen and dining room I have tried Resene Quarter Tea which is very similar to the current colour for the dining room and it quite suits the kitchen area. However, it presents a bit dark, and I tried Resene Eighth Tea and it makes the cabinetry look a bit too yellow when paired with Resene Half Rice Cake. What do you recommend? A. Yes, it is ok to paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls, and in this instance quite a good idea. Resene Black White might be a bit too cool for Resene Half Rice Cake – I suggest you try Resene Alabaster for the doors and trims. I assume you mean the cabinetry is looking yellow next to Resene Eighth Tea – as Resene Eighth Tea is not usually yellow – or it is the windows/light presenting it this way, which is why the darker Resene Quarter Tea worked because it reflects less colour. I suggest you test Resene Half Rice cake in the kitchen. If the kitchen appears too yellow with Resene Half Rice Cake – try a paler variant such as Resene Quarter Rice Cake – then however, the ceilings will need to be the same colour throughout. Q. I am struggling with the colour for our living room and bedroom. The dining room has sufficient sunlight whole day, the kitchen cabinets are deep brown grey, the lounge faces west and I have a wall between the dining room and living room, so it’s a bit dark until late afternoon. The entrance door is even darker and yellow as the windows are old fashioned yellow tone. Upstairs is normal with sunlight with a wooden floor. The current old paint is quite yellow tone, I want to keep to a warm tone but avoid too yellow. I tried a Resene Half Rice Cake testpot which lighten the house, however I don’t know if it suits the whole dining room and living room and will it look yellow with the sunlight? A. Resene Half Rice Cake could work well and shouldn't appear too yellow – it is a great colour when you have a lot of greenery outside. You might also like to try Resene Half Cararra and Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream. Are you repainting the window trims, doors, and ceiling? If so, I suggest Resene Alabaster – except for the stairwell ceiling which with its many angles might be better the same colour as the walls. August 2024 |
Q. We are building a new house. We have confirmed FlaxPod Matt colour for the roof, joinery and shed door. The pillars will be white or off white for contrast. We want ideas for the cladding that will work without going too dark – we were looking at Resene Tuna or Resene Half Tuna but are not sure if this goes with the FlaxPod. We also need a powder coat colour for the door. A. I love Resene Tuna for exteriors, however, being a steely blue grey it is on the cooler side, while FlaxPod is on the warmer side. Consider Resene Half Baltic Sea with Resene Half Wan White for the pillars. Resene do powder coat colours – I suggest Resene All Black for contrast. You just need to specify 'Resene Powder Coat in Resene All Black N25-001-264. Please ensure dark colours are appropriate for the cladding – with your builder or local council. For any dark paint colours, consider using the Resene CoolColour version to help reflect more heat. August 2024 |
Q. We are looking to have our house painted next month and I still need to decide on colours. We have had the following proposed – all the weatherboards to be a stark white (we have a new extension on the back which is painted Resene Double Black White). The roof is angled and is being painted in a dark colour and then all the lower level, garage doors and walls will be the same dark colour. The front door will then a fun bright colour. We are also adding some big pots with trees in the front too. My concern with the black roof/white middle/black lower is that the house could look stripey? A. As the roof is angled it won’t look stripey. Resene Double Black White is stark enough as whites appear brighter outside and it makes sense to continue the same neutral, if it pairs well with the joinery. For your dark colour try Resene Porter, Resene Double Foundry or Resene Nocturnal. These charcoals work well with Resene Double Black White. Darker colours on exterior substrates can attract heat, so to reduce heat absorption consider Resene CoolColour paint for all the dark substrates to help reflect more heat than the standard colour. August 2024 |
Q. We got testpots and tried them out on the weekend and we have now decided that it might be better if we go for a lighter theme for both the roof and bricks. We are looking at Resene Half Thorndon Cream for the brick and Resene Half Stonehenge for the roof. We are keen for a lighter grey roof and an off white brick. Do you think the above colours will work with the joinery or do you think there is another colour combo that might be a better fit? Obviously there are so many greys and whites to choose from and with an untrained eye it’s quite hard to pick. A. I have not seen Resene Half Stonehenge on a roof – I would be concerned it is a bit too pale in this instance and possibly a little red. Consider Resene Gauntlet for the roof with Resene Half Thorndon Cream – this combo could work quite nicely. August 2024 |
Q. We have Warm White Pearl Aluminium joinery. What is the colour match in Resene please? A. A Resene version of Warm White Pearl can be ordered via a Resene ColorShop. August 2024 |
Q. I have interior walls painted Resene Sea Fog and am considering either Resene Sea Fog or Resene Half Sea Fog for the wall kitchen cabinets. The island cabinetry will be Resene Half Craigieburn. A. Consider Resene Double Alabaster for the wall kitchen cabinetry – this will give enough contrast so that it doesn't look mismatched by having the cabinetry the same colour or similar as the different paint types used for this purpose can create a different look even when you are using the same colour. For the island unit consider Resene Rockbottom. It pairs well with Resene Sea Fog and Resene Double Alabaster. August 2024 |
Q. The walls and trims in my house are painted in Resene Tea, and I'm keen to add some colour to some rooms and features. Are there warm olive green/khaki shades that will work well with Resene Tea? A. The deeper smoky olives might pair better – Resene Tic Tac Toe is a lovely muddy green in the olive range or you might like to investigate Resene Woodland, Resene Double Lemon Grass, Resene Lemon Grass, Resene Hindsight or Resene Vantage Point. Resene Hindsight Resene Tic Tac Toe Resene Vantage Point August 2024 |
Q. We are doing a coastal build and were thinking of using Resene Quarter Heathered Grey on the exterior. What colour aluminium would you suggest for the windows and also a COLORSTEEL® roof colour? A. Resene have powder coating options – you just need to specify the colour – check out more information at www.resene/powdercoainting.com The colour I suggest is Resene Half Black White for the windows – so you would specify Resene Powder Coating Half Black White N94 004 096. For the roof I suggest COLORSTEEL® Slate. August 2024 |
Q. I am painting my downstairs hallway. The trims and doors are Resene Half Wan White (the bedrooms that come off the hallway are all painted Resene Wan White) but I believe the hallway will look too dark if I paint the walls Resene Wan White. There are also two external glass doors, their trims are painted Resene Sandspit Brown. Would Resene Alabaster or Resene White work with Resene Half Wan White? Or could you suggest another white for the hallway that will tie in with the Resene Wan White in the bedrooms and work to keep the hallway as light as possible? The floors are a light wood. A. I don't feel Resene Wan White will look dark – if we go too pale, we risk a cold sterile environment with low light areas. However, if you are intent on going paler – then I suggest Resene Quarter Wan White, just be aware that your trims will look darker than your walls. Lighting is critical to increase the ambience – perhaps look at warmer bulbs if you have got cooler white bulbs, then going paler will be effective. August 2024 |
Q. We’re looking at exterior colours for our 1930s bungalow. I’m torn between going bold with a dark charcoal – or a very pale, almost white or a dusty green. I’m liking Resene Foundry, Resene Half Baltic, Resene Linen or Resene Half Linen, Resene Tapa, Resene Masala – amongst many others! I know a lighter colour would be more practical – but I think the dark with a white trim would add some impact and street appeal. I do worry it won’t suit the style of the house though? The roof and spouting is black. I would love some advice please on these or other options. A. To suit the landscape and roof – I suggest a mid to dark colour, this will also link in the garage. I feel Resene Linen is too neutral and will give you the same look you currently have, and Resene Tapa and Resene Masala are too brown/green with the roof. Try Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey, Resene Half Baltic Sea, Resene Trojan, Resene Delta or Resene Tuna. I recommend Resene CoolColour paint for darker colours as this will help reflect more heat. August 2024 |
Q. We are about repaint our bach, a 1960s cottage in the Marlborough Sounds with weatherboard cladding (it's actually galvanised iron pressed to a weatherboard profile). It has a recently added zincalume clad chimney and white aluminium joinery set into the original wooden frames. The bach is surrounded by lawn and leafy natives. We're thinking either Resene Woodland or Resene Undercurrent/Resene Seachange (or similar) for the main colour. We'd like to know which works best, and need advice on a trim colour that would work to tie in the white joinery and zincalume chimney. We'd also like a pop of colour for the door (Resene Highball for the Resene Woodland for example). We'd probably paint the gable ends in the main colour too. The front deck will eventually be extended and replaced with a timber deck. A. I suggest an olive green – such as Resene Waiouru or Resene Tic Tac Toe, which will lift the appearance but fit in with the environment – for the front door try Resene Grass Hopper or Resene Highball with Resene Tic Tac Toe. For the window facings and trims – it really depends on the white aluminium – as they all have different undertones – try Resene White, Resene Half Black White or Resene Alabaster. Resene Tic Tac Toe August 2024 |
Q. We have Grey Friars windows and we want to paint the weatherboards a light grey/white-blue. We're wondering what would work for the facing for the windows. Appliance White has been suggested but it is more of a contrast than I would like. A. I suggest you choose your weatherboard colour first. Another option is to look at lighter variants of Grey Friars – a few of these are Resene Quarter Grey Friars, Resene Raven, Resene Half Raven or Resene Ted. August 2024 |
Q. We have a 1960s house with the exterior walls painted in Resene Swirl. The deep fascias are painted in Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey as are a lot of the upright posts on a covered way leading to our front door. The front door is currently painted in Resene Volcano but could do with a repaint and I would like a red that has a little more punch. What would you recommend? A. You have a lovely soft earthy scheme – with these colours the earthier reds do tend to work well – however, you can brighten the red to some effect – try Resene Pohutukawa or Resene Aroha. Higher sheen levels will also intensify the red so consider a gloss finish. August 2024 |
Q. We are trying to repaint our house and we are hopeless on picking colours. I would just like some thoughts on our choice. We are thinking Resene Karaka on roof and trims and Resene Cobblestone on fibrous cement weatherboard walls. The window frames are brown. Does this sound feasible or terrible? We live in a semi-rural area surrounded by trees. A. That is a perfect combination! Fibrous cement suits mid toned colours and Resene Cobblestone blends the brown joinery and pairs with a Karaka roof – a great scheme for a rural location. Previously I have combined Resene Cobblestone with brown joinery and an Ironsand roof, but being rural Karaka might suit better for the roof – perhaps test both. August 2024 |
Q. We have Resene Half Solitaire as our skirting and doors throughout the house, and this works with our darker cream aluminium joinery. We want to brighten up the walls, but we can’t seem to find the right colour, many are either looking pink or blue when we paint samples on the wall. A. When testing the colours – try not to test directly onto the existing-coloured walls as this will change any lighter colour you are trying. Resene sell A2 card which you can paint two coats (two coats will give the correct colour) of a testpot onto and move around the rooms. Alternatively, you could undercoat a room first with Resene Quick Dry undercoat and test colours – as you will probably need to undercoat if you are going from an existing darker colour to a much paler colour, however it is good to paint onto A2 card regardless so you can see if the one colour works throughout the home. Colours to try with Resene Half Solitaire are Resene Milk White, Resene Half Albescent White or Resene Chalk Dust. August 2024 |
Q. I need some inspiration for our external house colours. I will have a new Grey Friars roof and spouting. I would like to keep the house at the white end of the spectrum. I’m not opposed to white whites or a hint of colour. It's an investment property resale in 10 or so years is a consideration. I can have up to 3 colours. I will have a timber deck in front. I can paint I guess or leave it as pine timber. A. I suggest a bone white such as Resene Sea Fog for the weatherboards – it is not too stark. A white-on-white scheme will work well and is a good seller. Alternatively for the weatherboards you could opt for a brighter white – Resene Bianca. Try Resene Alabaster for the windows, back doors, all door frames, and trims, including the windowsills and the fascia and eaves. For the front door I suggest Resene Black in Resene Super Gloss Enamel (very popular). I would paint the deck and any timber steps in Resene Mountain Mist, a soft grey that will pair well. The deck handrails and balustrades (if timber) can be painted in Resene Alabaster. August 2024 |
Q. We would like to paint our roof and bricks but are unsure what colour. Our joinery is green which is dated so it is difficult for us to know how to modernise our house with the colour choice. We don’t plan to change the joinery. The garage door is slightly more blue where the joinery is a bit more green. We have just painted our fence Resene Double Foundry. I would love some suggestions of paint colours for the roof and bricks. A. You will need a colour which now pairs with the fence and green joinery. I suggest Resene Grey Friars for the roof with either Resene Half Tapa or Resene Half Tuna for the brick. It will be tricky to disguise the green – I suspect the garage has faded and being a blue green, it is showing bluer. There are deeper variants of these two colours. August 2024 |
Q. I’m thinking about painting my miners cottage (garage and sleepout) with Resene Eighth Lemon Grass. I was wondering if you had an advice for the window treatments and also the door. A couple option for each if possible? I have limelights hydrangeas in front of the main house and along the sleepout (dormant and trimmed at the moment), gaura, Russian sage, lavender and a light pink climbing rose by the pole at the front. I am still establishing the garden. The house is looking a bit of a patchwork at the moment while I made my choice of paint. I would love a recommendation for the roof too. A. I suggest a soft grey blue for the roof and garage door – try Resene Half Grey Friars. For the windows and trims I suggest a soft white – Resene Quarter Bianca – I also recommend using this white for the ornate detailing below the bargeboard. You might like to use a soft oyster colour such as Resene Half Truffle for the window sashes, windowsills and bargeboards/fascias – alternatively you could use Resene Quarter Bianca. The front door could be revived and remain a timber finish or to be painted a feature colour in a gloss finish – something that picks up the flowering garden. Resene Half Pohutukawa is a lovely front door colour which is a mellow red with undertones of pink or you might choose a neutral such as a deeper charcoal which works well with pinks such as Resene Ebony Clay. The garage would follow suit to the main house – so weatherboards in Resene Eighth Lemon Grass with the roof and garage door in Resene Half Grey Friars. Painting the walls, garage door and roof of the sleepout in Resene Half Grey Friars would help it to recede so the focus is on the house. August 2024 |
Q. We are about to repaint the exterior of a house. We're going to put Resene Tasman on the walls, white on trim/barge boards to match the new aluminium joinery and want a grey to put on the front door, garage door and some surrounding fencing. We are using this local house for inspiration. Can you recommend some greys that will go well with Tasman please. Not too dark. The house is not on a hugely sunny section, but is surrounded by native bush. A. Try Resene Gravel, Resene Double Tapa, Resene Half Baltic Sea or Resene Thunderstorm. August 2024 |
Q. I’m just about to stain the base boards of our new build. The house has been clad with Abodo timber stained walnut. I'm wanting ideas to match the base boards. The build is 2 metres off the ground at the front. A. I suggest painting the base boards Resene Half Bokara Grey which will pair with the joinery and Walnut stain. It may pay to check a darker colour is suitable for the base with your builder as some LRV (light reflective restrictions) are in place with new weatherboard claddings. Resene CoolColour paint can also help reduce heat related issues with darker colours. August 2024 |
Q. Can you please tell me which test pot I buy to match the COLORSTEEL® colour Sandstone Grey? A. The equivalent to COLORSTEEL® Sandstone Grey is Resene Gauntlet. August 2024 |
Q. My kitchen cupboards are in Resene Half Resene Thorndon Cream with matt silver trims and walls in Resene Fossil. How can I repaint the walls to make the cupboards look less yellow/cream? I cannot afford to have the cupboards repainted commercially. I want to give the kitchen a ‘lift’ but I also want to keep it neutral. A. Warm, soft neutral tones are best to counteract the cream – working with the cabinetry is the best option for a better outcome. Colour drenching (painting the substrates one colour with varying sheen levels is right on point) – painting the walls Resene Half Thorndon Cream will blend the cabinetry into the walls – or you might like to try Resene Rice Cake which will tone but is whiter. Grey whites, cleaner creams and colour will enhance the yellow undertone in the cabinetry. Sheen levels help with the look and feel of whites – Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is a durable, low sheen, water-based enamel, which means it is easier to clean, and being a durable paint, it means the finish will remain looking better longer. Low sheen and matt finishes help to subdue colour, where higher sheen levels enhance yellow undertones. August 2024 |
Q. I have painted my roof with Resene Ironsand. I am now looking for a bottom colour to go with the roof colour. A. Try Resene Half Masala. It goes well with brick and Resene Ironsand. I suggest Investigating Resene CoolColour paint to reduce heat retention – you can continue this paint onto the base of the house for colour consistency. August 2024 |
Q. I am painting a mural in our school corridor. Above the bag hooks will be symbols from all around the world. Beneath the bag hooks (the ugly brown part in the photos) will be white, with ‘Welcome’ written in different languages. My vision is for all the ‘welcomes’ to be different sizes, different fonts and different colours The problem I am having is choosing a colour palette. Because the mural has so much going on, I wanted to limit my colours. I was thinking of using only the colours from the "Progress Pride Flag" but maybe half strength to make it all not so bright? I would love some advice on choosing colours and any assistance colour matching for this. It is a bit of an ambitious project! A. Perhaps paint samples of dominant colours in the mural onto card first and view them together proportionately with the full-strength colours of the flag to start – you might have to do a practice run with cutting out the letters of the languages from painted swatches with Resene testpots. Or you could paint the mural first. While working on the mural colours you could always pop into Resene and start the process of matching the colours to the flag – I am not sure whether full strength or softer is going to be better – It really depends on the strength of the colours within the mural – to which would balance better, it might be that you use both – depending on the layout – with pre painted letters onto card you can then play with the layout on the wall. My initial thought is to use one colour for each language – you might find something within the language that determines the colour. By using one colour for each welcome sign then it won’t compete with the busy mural, and you will still end up with a multi coloured arrangement of the wording. Depending on how many languages you are going to have – you might choose to use a combination of full-strength colours and half strength, for others. August 2024 |
Q. I have recently put in a window in my bedroom that never used to get a lot of light. I have Resene Quarter Tea on the walls at the moment and I think Resene Alabaster on the trims and a white ceiling. I did wonder whether with most of the furniture out, whether this might be a good time to change the colour of the walls. I feel like everything is very beige. A. Yes, I believe it is a great time to change colour – to take advantage of the new light, a brighter warmer neutral might be nice to complement the beige tones, I suggest keeping Resene Alabaster for the trims etc. Try Resene Cararra, Resene Quarter Albescent White or Resene Half Rice Cake. August 2024 |
Q. We are currently renovating our home and I need help picking a warm white paint colour for our walls and then a contrasting colour for the ceiling and trim. One half of our house (two bedrooms and lounge) get all day sun and lots of light. We have already sampled Resene Half Merino and Resene White Pointer but found they were too grey for our house. A. Try Resene Milk White, Resene Half Albescent White or Resene Half Rice Cake. For the ceilings and trims try Resene Alabaster. Consider sheen levels when choosing a white – Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is a durable, low sheen waterborne enamel which means being a durable paint the finish remains looking better longer, and it has a lovely soft sheen to the finish. A flat paint such as Resene SpaceCote Flat is recommended for ceilings. August 2024 |
Q. What exterior house colours go with Lichen aluminium joinery? I’m really a grey person but my new house has Lichen. The roof is lichen also but is faded. It’s a 2005 contemporary build, single level with a timber roller door. The aluminium joinery is framed with painted timber and sills, the cladding is weatherboard. It has Teak decking in the entertaining area. I’ve been contemplating painting the weatherboards in dark blue, maybe Resene Ocean Waves and window surrounds in Resene Half Truffle or Resene Quarter Truffle to tone down the Lichen. Although I love deep greys none of them seem right with the joinery colour. A. A deep blue may enhance the Lichen. To minimise the effect of Lichen in your scheme – I suggest working within similar tones. I suggest trying colours such as Resene Double Ash, Resene Bison Hide, Resene Truffle, Resene Taupe Grey or Resene Half Masala. Do the window surrounds and trims need to be contrasted? You can further minimise Lichen windows by painting these the same colour as the weatherboards but in a higher sheen level – for example – a low sheen like Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen is great for the weatherboards as it is durable but hides minor imperfections, paired with a semi-gloss for the window surrounds and trims – Resene Lustacryl. If you do want a contrast – two tones lighter than the weatherboard colour is a good start. August 2024 |
Q. We want to paint our exterior Resene Dusted Blue. We are trying to find a burnt yellow for our entry hall, that isn't jarring coming from Resene Dusted Blue on the 'walk through'. A. I suggest you try Resene Sunbeam or Resene Rob Roy. Sheen levels further enhance or subdue yellow – a lower sheen level like Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen will give a lovely soft feel to the yellow, and being a durable, low sheen waterborne enamel, it is easier to maintain, therefore the finish looks better for longer. August 2024 |
Q. I have used Resene Thunder Road on my house, but this seems to have been discontinued. Is there another colour I could use to match this? A. Resene do not discontinue colours as such – Resene Thunder Road is from the Resene The Range 2020 fashion fandeck and is available as a colour to be mixed. Pop into your local Resene Color Shop and they can mix this colour for you. Resene Thunder Road August 2024 |
