Q. We are painting the exterior of a 100 year old villa. The weatherboards are Resene Spanish White. The wooden windows have been painted in with Resene Biscotti and the roof is Pioneer Red. The trim around the window I painted with Resene Sour Dough but it is not ‘different’ enough or 'peachy/pinky’ enough to see a difference from the Resene Biscotti. Can you please suggest another few colours to choose from that will be a bit more lightly red/peach colour to blend with the colours above plus the red roof? A. Try Resene Half Malta, Resene Malta or Resene Half Rickshaw. These have a brown base with a pink undertone – the earthiness gives them elegance when combined with red and beige. April 2024 |
Q. We have painted our interior walls in Resene Half White Pointer, with Resene Alabaster on the trim and interior doors. Our carpeting is grey and the joinery is FlaxPod (same as Resene Element). Our entry hallway is tiled with terracotta coloured tiles. We want to paint them a different colour, just to buy us a little time before we're ready to redo the flooring totally in this space. We have grey carpet nearby. What colours might work well for the floor? A. Consider painting the tiles to match the carpet – so the two flooring types merge. If you have a sample of the carpet then take it into a Resene ColorShop – or take home a range of grey colour charts and see which tones with the carpet. You can go one or two shades lighter than the carpet. Alternatively, paint the tiles a deeper shade of the walls – try Resene Truffle or there are deeper variants. I also suggest adding a rug or runner – you can get rug grips from flooring stores as well which stick to tiles so the rug doesn’t slip or move to prolong the life of the painted tile and help to blend the new colour in. It also it might add a bit of texture. April 2024 |
Q. We have an Ironsand roof and spouting and are looking for an exterior colour for our bach which will face into full sun and sea spray. Can you recommend an exterior wall colour? A. Check out Resene Quarter Friar Greystone, Resene Cloud, Resene Atmosphere or Resene Duck Egg Blue. April 2024 |
Q. We are painting our walls the colour Resene Double White Pointer and would like to paint the ceilings and architraves a shade of white to complement. Could you please advise which shade or colour of white would work? A. Try Resene Alabaster for standard height ceilings or Resene Double Alabaster for higher ceilings. April 2024 |
Q. I am repainting the exterior of my house. It’s currently painted Resene Half Friar Greystone and I believe the trim is Resene Thorndon Cream. I want to go a little darker and quite like full strength Resene Friar Greystone. Do you have a recommendation for the trim colour as to whether Resene Thorndon Cream remains a good option or are there other options that would also work well? A. Resene Friar Greystone will add depth to your home and lightening the trims will give a fresh, modern overall change to the appearance. Try Resene Merino or Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream. April 2024 |
Q. Our bathroom, toilet and laundry are painted in Resene Flax. The bedrooms are painted Resene Bud. The lounge, dining and kitchen are Resene Earthstone. What colour would be a good colour for the foyer and hallway, ideally something with green hues to tie the other spaces together. Do you think Resene Aspiring would be a good option? Or Resene Zen? A. Resene Zen is a bit too yellow based and Resene Aspiring might be a bit dull for a hallway/foyer – but it’s worth trying. Try Resene Beryl Green or Resene Half Beryl Green from the Karen Walker Paints collection. April 2024 |
Q. We have yellow and orange brick on our exterior and are thinking of painting the rest with Resene Half Truffle or Resene Quarter Truffle. Our roof is dark grey. A. Resene Half Truffle could work really well with the brick. I suggest you paint the trims the same (Resene Half Truffle) and paint the garage doors a darker grey to match the roof. Try testpots of Resene Half Truffle and Resene Truffle as colours do appear lighter outside, even though I feel Resene Half Truffle might be a better match (quarter strength will likely be too pale). April 2024 |
Q. We have purchased a house and everything is painted Resene Pearl Lusta, walls, ceiling, doors – everything. My preference is to leave the ceiling and doors Resene Pearl Lusta and paint the walls. I love Resene paints I particularly like the Karen Walker colour range e.g. Resene Periglacial Blue, Resene Robin Egg Blue, Resene Smoky Green, Resene Smalt Blue etc. Would these colours work well with Resene Pearl Lusta? I would also love any suggestions that you have for colours I could paint the walls to complement Resene Pearl Lusta for living areas, bedrooms etc. A. Resene Pearl Lusta does work well with lighter variants if you are looking for a neutral base colour – and this will still modernise your home’s interior – so consider Quarter Pearl Lusta if you don’t want all the walls a colour. This might work for wet areas, such as the bathrooms to keep them warm and brighter – however, it does mean that the ceilings will be deeper than the walls. Blues and greens look great with the Resene Pearl Lusta family! Especially the stronger variants, these could look great for bedrooms or a feature wall in a living area. Try Resene Robin Egg Blue, Resene Half Robin Egg Blue, Resene Half Smalt Blue (could be a feature colour) and Resene Double Duck Egg Blue. The great thing about the Resene Pearl Lusta family is it sits really well with brighter accents so look to your fabrics and objects you love, or pop into homeware stores, to see what accent colours you can contrast into bed wear and soft furnishings with the blues and greens. Try painting one room to check you are happy and then you can move confidently from there. Resene Double Duck Egg Blue April 2024 |
Q. We are having to re waterproof and paint our entire engineered stackbond concrete block house. The roof and spouting are Grey Friars and we wonder how Resene Triple Sea Fog might look on the exterior. It’s a single storey house. A. Resene Triple Sea Fog is a light cool toned grey that pairs well with mid greys such as Grey Friars. Pairing the two together for a concrete block exterior will create a modern, but timeless scheme, with the main body of the house appearing as a definite, grey based white. Colours tend to appear lighter outside due to natural and intense lighting conditions, impacting the perception of exterior colours – so triple strength is a great option for a hint of definite colour (grey). April 2024 |
Q. I want to paint the exterior of our 1920s wooden villa. It’s current painted an almond white. I have painted the front door black (was white) and stained the double wooden garage door black. All the houses up our street are white cream or various shades of beige. I am tossing up with Resene Quarter Powder Blue or Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue. I love them both. Can you help me decide? My garden is planted in whites blues purples and pinks. Our house doesn’t get shade. A. Either are going to work – so it is personal preference. I will say that colours do appear lighter on mass, outside, so to help decide, I recommend you paint A2 card with two coats of each testpot and compare them near the garden. One might work a little better. I am guessing Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue might as it has a slight green undertone that comes to the fore sometimes in certain lights and might work with a garden setting overall. I have also seen Resene Quarter Powder Blue work well in coastal settings/styles. April 2024 |
Q. We are in the middle of building a double garage with a self-contained flat attached to the end. The roof, garage cladding, garage door and joinery around the windows and doors for the flat are Ironsand. The soffit is Resene Alabaster. The flat is having Linea added on the outside and I am struggling to find a colour I like for this. I don't want too pale a colour, I'm looking for something with a bit more depth and warmth. I was thinking maybe Resene Lichen or Resene Go Ben but am not sure. Do you have any suggestions? A. I like where you are heading with your colours – I suggest you try testpots of Resene Go Ben, Resene Half Masala, Resene Stonewall, Resene Lisbon Brown and Resene Grey Olive. Painting any that appeal onto an offcut of Linea would be ideal or onto A2 card and view outside with Ironsand. April 2024 |
Q. I am repainting the bathroom in our apartment. I'm thinking of Resene Poured Milk for the walls, and I need a colour suggestion for the vanity cupboard doors. The cupboard doors are edged in a grey aluminium (which can't be removed). I have used Resene Element on all the doors in our apartment. I would like a dark colour for the vanity cupboard doors that works as a contrast to Poured Milk. Would Resene Element work, or do you have other suggestions? A. Resene Ironsand is a bit softer than Resene Element and might work well, or to match with the grey aluminium try Resene Fuscous Grey. April 2024 |
Q. I’m looking for an off-white colour to paint our Rockcote textured plastered fence/wall. There will be an aluminium gate which is Resene Eighth Ironsand. Which tone of off-white do you think would complement this colour? The wall is going to be plastered in Rockcote Classico textured finish. It’s a fence/wall at the front boundary of our property which is approximately 24m long by 2m high. I don’t want it stark white as it will be too bright. I would prefer a warm/neutral white. We have light grey limestone tiles which will be in close proximity. A. Try Resene Wan White – it is not too stark and is warmer than some grey whites, without being cream. Resene Merino might be another option but is a bit creamier. April 2024 |
Q. Our house cladding is a mixture of cedar weatherboards and plaster. We are seeking advice on a paint colour for the plaster and soffit. The roof, fascia, spouting and windows are all in Ironsand. The weatherboard colour is quite deteriorated but was a light oak type colour. We are thinking grey but are open to other suggestions. It is a country home with no close neighbours. A. Check out Resene Silver Chalice, Resene Half Taupe Grey or Resene Archive Grey. April 2024 |
Q. We are painting a room at church that has Oamaru stone on three of the walls. There is a thin concrete strip above this stone, and then concrete from the hip down. The fourth wall has rimu shelving built in and a painted wall above hip height, and concrete below hip height. I was wondering about a contrasting colour for the bottom part of the wall – what colour goes well with Oamaru stone? A. A mid green should work well – try Resene Frontier or Resene Bud. April 2024 |
Q. We are having the exterior of our holiday home repainted and would like some inspiration for a new fresher scheme. We’re looking for a light and fresh colour palette. The roof and aluminium joinery are in Titania and will remain the same. The home has both Linea and Axon on it. A. Lightening the home’s exterior will modernise the overall appearance. Try Resene Triple Ash or Resene Half Arrowtown for the Linea with Resene Ash for the Axon. (There are lighter variants which you could also try). Or try Resene Atmosphere or Resene Half Atmosphere for the Linea with Resene Triple Sea Fog for the Axon. Or try Resene Eighth Arrowtown for the Linea with Resene Triple Sea Fog for the Axon. April 2024 |
Q. We are painting a community hall. It has a Sandstone COLORSTEEL® roof and gutter and a SurfMist colour on the trim of the bargeboards. We are trying to decide on the main colour – we wondered about a dark grey or a desert colour. There are picnic tables outside and railings also which we can paint. A. Consider these options: Try Resene Ravine for the main body and timber railings with the entrance doors and any picnic tables to be Resene Chelsea Gem – a Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss finish for the front doors will make the entrance pop. My thoughts are to not highlight the railings but if you wish to, you could paint them Resene Titania – which is the equivalent of SurfMist. Or try Resene Double Tapa for the main body and timber railings with the entrance doors and picnic tables in Resene Wasabi (or you could do the railings in Resene Titania). April 2024 |
Q. We are currently renovating our kitchen/dining/living room. The walls are to be painted in Resene Half Sea Fog. We also want to paint the ceiling timber beam (main beams only and not the entire timber ceiling) and are considering painting the windows the same colour. I've attached a doc with our interior as well as pictures of what we would like to achieve. We have a sample of Resene Element and are not 100% sure it will be the right colour. A. Resene Element is an option, however, Resene Porter is a little softer and might give you a great effect. I recommend trying both with a testpot and see how the colours look inside in the natural environment to give you the best idea. April 2024 |
Q. If a house is dark inside, is it better to paint a warm white instead of Resene Sea Fog? There’s a lot of rimu in it on flooring and some panelled ceilings like a Lockwood. A. Yes I do suggest a warmer white – Resene Half Rice Cake or Resene Half Milk White are worth trying – and there are lighter variants. April 2024 |
Q. Thank you so much for your recommendation of Resene Half Bokara Grey on the outside of our house! Hubby is happy with it as well. The other bit of the house we need to paint is this awful brick wall in the lounge. We are thinking of painting a neutral colour maybe Resene Sea Fog. Parts of the house are dark and dingy. I’m stuck on the brick wall in the lounge. We cannot change the ugly heater right now, but it will happen! Is it best to go a darker colour on the brick ? I will change the curtains and paint the beam in the lounge lighter as well. A. Resene Sea Fog will work well. For the brick wall I suggest Resene Half Mondo. April 2024 |
Q. I'm looking for a house colour to go with a New Denim Blue roof and windows. I know grey is an option, but black and grey are a bit overdone. My old house is just across the road from a Napier beach. A. Check out Resene Cloudy, Resene Cloud or Resene Half Friar Greystone. If your house has a lot of white trims/detailing softer colours might work, such as Resene Tua Tua, Resene Eighth Pravda or Resene Quarter Truffle. Resene Half Friar Greystone Resene Tua Tua April 2024 |
Q. We are painting inside and out. Our exterior is currently white with red trim. I am envisaging changing this to white with white trim, but am not sure what to pick. Perhaps something that looks slightly warmer than a plain dipped in white look? For the door I was thinking black, a duck egg blue or even yellow. A complication is candy-coloured glass around the front door. The house across the road has a nice orange door. A nearby house has a black (dark purple) door. I will probably add arched brackets. The roof is to be replaced with pale grey, mid grey or darker mid grey. The inside of the house is bright with skylights to help achieve that. In our previous bungalow, we inherited Resene Pearl Lusta variants and moved to Resene Quarter Spanish White. We had a wall in Resene Half Linen that I liked a lot. Perhaps for this house we could go for slightly lighter tones? The home has a 3m stud. The most difficult space is the entry hall because of the dark and coloured glass around the entry door. The extension also has a high ceiling with a lot of light from the south and skylights. In our previous house, I changed the fireplace and front door from white to black and loved them. A. For the main body of your exterior, Resene Sea Fog is a great versatile white that suits weatherboards and most environments – it has a slight warmth to it, without being cream and it is not a stark white – which is great for exteriors. For the trims and fretwork I suggest a brighter white to contrast with the weatherboards – Resene Alabaster. A light grey for the roof that will sit well next to most other darker greys is Resene Atmosphere (COLORSTEEL® Gull Grey). Because of the candy coloured glass – to avoid a clash on your door, I suggest using a darker colour in a gloss finish – such as Resene Double Cod Grey or Resene Double Foundry. For the interior, continue the darker colour onto the inside of the front door. For the interior walls Resene Quarter Linen is lovely with Resene Alabaster trims. March 2024 |
Q. I have painted my exterior weatherboard home Resene Double Stack with guttering, fascia and roof all in Resene Grey Friars. All windows and door frames are white. The front door step is white (at this stage – open to suggestions). The front door was formerly an Oregon wooden door that needed repaired, so is now requiring painting. The front door is in recessed porch facing west. My question is, what would be an appropriate colour for the front door that will make it pop? I considered Grey Friars but wondered if that would be too dark. We are also going to plaster and paint the steps. A. I suggest a burnt orange for your door such as Resene Fire, and yes I recommend keeping the door step white along with the framing. For the plastered steps investigate Resene Foggy Grey or Resene Double Silver Chalice. March 2024 |
Q. We are moving into our new house and we want to paint the deck skirting. Would it look best with a lighter colour than the house, or darker? I don’t know what colour the house is other than to say it’s pale brown. If we go darker, I was looking at Resene Half Masala or Resene Quarter Masala, or maybe Resene Stonehenge or Resene Basalt. If you think it would look better lighter, I was thinking of Resene Truffle or Resene Sea Fog but I am open to suggestions. A. Because it will be difficult to get a lighter or deeper tone correct – I suggest you go much lighter but not too white. Try Resene Triple Sea Fog or Resene Wan White. March 2024 |
Q. We are painting the exterior of our house and like Resene Half Opal. Is Resene Quarter Opal also an option? Also, what shade of white would you recommend to complement Resene Quarter Opal or Resene Half Opal for trims and under the eaves? Would Resene Black White work? Also what shade of white would you recommend to complement Resene Beeswax? A. A quarter strength of Resene Opal can be mixed at a Resene ColorShop for you. It is not a standard colour. Resene Half Opal and Resene Quarter Opal will pair well with Resene Alabaster. Resene Beeswax pairs well with Resene Half Bianca. March 2024 |
Q. I need to paint some new exterior wooden pillars outside my house. I would like it to match my deck which will be stained in either Resene Cedar or Resene Oiled Cedar. Could you recommend a paint colour that will match? A. The match will depend on the timber you are staining, as this will affect how the stain colour looks. Try Resene Hairy Heath or Resene Redwood. March 2024 |
Q. I think I am going to go with Resene Concrete for my main weatherboard colour as I like the bit of depth it gives. I’m just wondering about what white I choose for the window surrounds. I have looked at Appliance White and Resene Half Sea Fog. My view is that Resene Half Sea Fog works just as well but is slightly less of a bright white which I think I quite like. Do you think using Resene Concrete and Resene Half Sea Fog together would work ok? A. Yes Resene Half Sea Fog looks lovely with Resene Concrete. Resene Half Sea Fog will brighten a bit outside anyway and is a popular option with Resene Concrete. March 2024 |
Q. I was wondering if you could, please, help me choose a suitable colour and paint for kitchen cabinets in a bach that was built in the late 50s. We are looking for a soft warm neutral tone that goes well with the existing light laminate benchtop. We would also paint the rest of the house a warm white (thinking either Resene Alabaster or Resene Rice Cake) to get rid of the peppermint green. A. To freshen and lighten the kitchen with a hint of warmth, try a soft off white for the walls such as Resene Rice Cake with Resene Quarter Rice Cake for the cabinetry. March 2024 |
Q. What would be the best colour to paint our roof, garage door, front door and windows? Our house is red brick with shingles and we would like it to look more modern, if that's possible. A. The strength of the bricks and the relief of the shingles means your house could take a darker colour such as Resene Ironsand or Resene Noir. I suggest either for all the substrates you are repainting except the soffit – keep this a soft white such as Resene Half Sea Fog. The substrates remaining one colour will modernise the overall appearance. March 2024 |
Q. I am looking for an earthy tone for outdoor cane chairs that sit against a backdrop of cedar. Can you recommend a few colours please? A. Earthy greens and muddy beiges or a muted blue could look lovely. See if any of these colours appeal: Resene Balderdash, Resene Paddock, Resene Waiouru, Resene Field Day, Resene Vantage Point, Resene Hollyford Track or Resene Piazza. Resene Piazza Resene Hollyford Track Resene Field Day Resene Vantage Point March 2024 |
Q. I want to repaint my house in a soft white (not bright white). My fence is Resene Gravel and my roof is similar to this colour. My house is currently a creamy yellow and I want to update to a more modern colour. A. I still suggest a warm white to work but it doesn’t have to be cream and the colours recommended will appear less cream outside. It will depend on your window joinery colour as well to how these whites will pair. Try Resene Merino and Resene Double Rice Cake. March 2024 |
Q. I would like to update my kitchen. I have a raspberry bench and have just put in a new Smeg cream coloured oven and have lots of beautiful accessories, many cream and also coloured Le Creuset stoneware. My walls are from memory Resene Vermont which I may or may not change but am open for suggestions. A. I feel there are too many features at present and really the beautiful cream Smeg oven and coloured Le Creuset stoneware and accessories are the features. To simplify and enhance the oven – I do suggest painting out the Resene Vermont green walls to fall into the scheme – with a much lighter cream such as Resene Half Villa White – with a darker neutral on the kitchen cabinetry, to offset the oven, such as Resene Caraway – which will also work with the raspberry bench. Trialling testpots painted onto A2 card and compared in the space, especially with the oven are recommended, to ensure that the neutrals pair with the cream tone of the Smeg oven, if not we can tweak the tone, but basically this is the direction I recommend moving to. March 2024 |
Q. We want to paint the wall in our kitchen behind the hob up to the ceiling. The ceiling is Resene Eighth Malta. Our pantry/cupboards are a dark charcoal melamine with a white slightly grey speckled Formica bench top. The wall is currently Resene Dynamite but we would like to lighten the wall. Our kitchen is an island with the dining walls painted Resene Quarter Malta, it is west facing. Do we need to stick to a yellow base colour to go with Resene Malta? A. Mid toned muted beiges look good in west facing rooms. With Resene Quarter Malta and Resene Eighth Malta existing, I suggest staying within the same family to make it work. Try Resene Half Malta or one of the variants of Resene Malta for this wall – it will feel a lot lighter compared to the red you have had. March 2024 |
Q. We're about to get our lounge and other upstairs rooms painted. We'll do them all the same colour so we'll go with what works in the lounge. This is a long rectangular space. We will be doing the walls and the ceiling and want to go reasonably neutral. The window looks out to the sea. This part of the room (first third) is very sunny, from mid-afternoon on a sunny day, while the rest of the space is reasonably bright. On a dull day it all looks quite bleak but we do have a beige wallpaper currently so that's probably not helping. I would be very grateful if you could give me some suggestions for whites that will work on the walls plus a complementary white for the ceiling. The current lights on the ceiling are to be replaced with large amber coloured globes. We have done lots of painting of those cardboard squares and quite liked Resene Quarter Villa White and Resene Half Rice Cake. We had almost settled on the latter (with a 'White' ceiling) when I saw it has a green base and I'm not sure that's what I should be going for. I want the ceiling to look crisp (though not too stark) and differentiated from the walls. A. I believe you are right on point with Resene Half Rice Cake or Resene Quarter Villa White – these will be the right tones – I am leaning towards the Resene Rice Cake family myself. Resene Half Rice Cake is less green than full strength Resene Rice Cake – to eliminate further green tints being highlighted, you might want to consider really brightening the room with Resene Quarter Rice Cake for the walls and ceilings. Having a contrast for the ceiling can enhance the coloured walls. Being a long room with some areas being lower in light – and you haven’t mentioned if the light upstairs is bright – then brightening both spaces will give them a visual lift. Yes – the beige of the wallpaper and the texture will be a contributing factor to the absorption of light. I suggest you paint onto A2 card (two coats) of testpots of the three whites – Resene Half Rice Cake, Resene Quarter Rice Cake and Resene Quarter Villa White and see which looks best in the lounge. If Resene Half Rice Cake works and you do want a contrast for the ceiling and scotia – I suggest Resene Eighth Rice Cake, rather than a stark white. March 2024 |
Q. What colour should I paint my home? My roof is Grey Friars and the joinery is Palladium silver. A. See if any of these Resene colours appeal: Resene Silver Chalice, Resene Half Silver Chalice, Resene Half Delta, Resene Quarter Taupe Grey, Resene Quarter Tapa or Resene Triple Sea Fog. March 2024 |
Q. Our house is painted in Resene Double Merino with Resene Alabaster trim. The roof and front door are FlaxPod (Element). We have a small cottage at the back and I would like to paint it in a stronger colour but one that tones with the house. I would like to use the same FlaxPod colour on the cottage’s front door. Its roof is in a mid-grey (relatively new so we won’t be changing that). I was thinking along the ideas of a sage colour. Your thoughts? A. Yes a sage green will work perfectly on your cottage and will sit well with Resene Element and Resene Double Merino, plus will pair with the mid grey roof. A greyed green with warmer undertones suits the natural environment – try greens such as Resene Siam or Resene Flax. Team them with Resene Double Merino or Resene Merino (to tie in the main house) for all the trims, including the bottom windowsills, or alternatively you might want to bring in more of a grey white such as Resene Double Sea Fog for the trims and sills. March 2024 |
Q. My partner and I had chosen Resene Gumboot as our exterior door colour on the basis that we were going to repaint the weatherboards in the same colour which is currently Resene Caraway but after painting all the windows and trim in Resene Alabaster my partner wants a different colour to Resene Caraway, which means either I have to repaint all the windows back to Resene Caraway or find a different colour for the weatherboards. In my opinion the Resene Caraway/Resene Gumboot/Resene Alabaster combo looks quite nice, but I’m struggling to find a colour that complements the Resene Gumboot door. Do you have any suggestions? A. Perhaps the fresher, whiter windows are making the appearance of Resene Caraway a bit more creamier than usual. Your roof colour needs to be taken into consideration as well with whatever weatherboard colour is preferred. I suggest a lighter and a slightly more cooler colour for the weatherboards, and retaining the Resene Alabaster for the windows – as this is a more modern approach. I suggest you try three new neutrals, which will look good with the roof and Resene Alabaster windows – Resene Triple White Pointer, Resene Triple Sea Fog or Resene Cloudy. March 2024 |
Q. Does Resene produce paint cards specifically for mid-century interior and exterior paint colours? I am considering buying a mid-century house and want to be sure I am repainting it in authentic colours – I am a little confused understanding mid-century with mid-century contemporary? A. Mid-century contemporary refers to modern/contemporary interiors incorporating aspects of mid-century design, or traditional homes with mid-century architecture adopting a contemporary/modern interior – but still retaining details of the era. You can read more in this blog: https://www.resene.co.nz/decorating-blog/1151-mid-century-modern-flair.htm. March 2024 |
Q. We are looking to repaint our roof and weatherboards, I was going to go for a complete change but didn't want to repaint the aluminium, so am staying with the Rivergum for the roof but do you think Resene Tasman would work for the weatherboards? I’m not sure what to do with the Cedar. A. Yes Resene Tasman should look quite lovely actually and will work with your windows and roof. For the cedar I suggest keeping it a feature and staining it with Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain tinted to Resene Banjul or Resene Canopy. A darker colour will hide imperfections rather than trying to revive it. The alternative is to paint the cedar Resene Tasman as well if you prefer a painted finish, however I feel it is a feature of the house and Cedar is such a beautiful timber – perhaps do a sample and see how it appeals. March 2024 |
Q. We have bought a new front door and can't decide what colour to paint it, but we are thinking of a light blue or green. The exterior house paint is Resene Silver Chalice and the door frame is plain white. We also have Resene Ship Grey on our exterior windowsills. We would be grateful for advice on what colour would match well. We were thinking of doing it Resene Ship Grey, but on reflection I think a new, brighter colour would look better. A. Yes I agree, a new door a new colour! Plus Resene Silver Chalice looks great with brighter doors. A blue green or bright yellow could work well with your scheme – such as Resene Wild Thing, Resene Turbo, Resene Half Turbo, Resene Sea Nymph, Resene Upside or Resene Island Time. If you tire of it, it’s pretty easy to paint over! Resene Upside Resene Island Time March 2024 |
Q. I am looking for a colour(s) to paint the gable end of my home and under the eaves. The roof is Ironsand, the windows and fascia board will be Resene Half Thorndon Cream and the brick is a whitish neutral colour. The gable end and under the eaves is currently a greenish colour which I don't like. I am not sure if I paint the gable end and under the eaves Resene Half Thorndon Cream too or choose a different colour(s). I want a neutral look to match the brick. A. I suggest you try Resene Double Merino – it should pair with the brick and the Resene Half Thorndon Cream of the windows. Or keep the consistency with repeating Resene Half Thorndon Cream. However, Resene Double Merino is a little more muted than Resene Half Thorndon Cream so might not be so bright. You might also want to try a deeper variant of Resene Half Thorndon Cream, such as Resene Thorndon Cream or Resene Double Thorndon Cream. March 2024 |
Q. We are painting a four unit apartment block. Your consultant suggested Resene Quarter Sandstone with Resene Cloud as a highlight. The owners decided to go with Resene Cloud as the building colour. We now need a darker colour for the front doors and the steel handrails and pergolas. Can I have your recommendation please? A. See if any of these Resene colours appeal – they are different variants of one colour which I feel will work with your scheme – I am assuming your window joinery is black. Try Resene Porter, Resene Night Magic or Resene Boris. March 2024 |
Q. We want to freshen up the inside of our house with lighter paint. The current colour on the walls, ceilings, doors and trims is Resene Half Spanish White. The curtains are also like a Resene Half Spanish White in colour with an embossed pattern and we don't want to change the curtains. I don't want to go too white as I like a bit of warmth and the house has an Italian theme. I quite like Resene Rice Cake, but am not sure if this would go with the curtains. One more thing is the kitchen, the cabinets are currently painted Resene Pohutukawa. I would like to choose another colour that is lighter that would go with the walls and some of the rimu wood features maybe a pale soft green? A. As you only have the tone of Resene Half Spanish White in the curtains, then you probably can paint the walls Resene Rice Cake, however, consider a slightly more yellow oxide white, such as Resene Quarter Villa White or Resene Half Villa White. An olive or sage green will work well for the kitchen cabinetry – consider Resene Flax, Resene Frontier, Resene Bud or Resene Green Spring. March 2024 |
Q. I don't know what colour to paint my internal doors with the door surrounds being rimu? A. It really depends on what colour your walls/flooring is and if you want the Rimu to be enhanced which means a warmer, yellow white such as Resene Bianca or if you want to tone down the wood hue then you might want to choose a slightly cooler white, such as Resene Double Alabaster. March 2024 |
Q. We are renovating our 1950s weatherboard house and have just replaced the roof with COLORSTEEL® Grey Friars. The window frames are bright white PVC double glazing so can’t be changed. Currently the house is painted with Resene Half Thorndon Cream – would you recommend changing that shade? We have a new solid front door – which CoolColour would you recommend? We were thinking perhaps black or dark grey to match the white roof. A. Yes, I do recommend you change the wall colour – Resene Half Thorndon Cream may look more cream next to the PVC white, plus with Grey Friars I suggest a modern, cool toned white such as Resene Sea Fog or Resene Double Sea Fog. For the front door I suggest a deeper variant of Grey Friars, such as Resene Invincible, in a semi-gloss or gloss finish, such as Resene Lustacryl or Resene Super Gloss. March 2024 |
Q. Our GJ Gardner home in Papamoa is 20 years old and we want to modernise/freshen/lighten up the interior wall paint colour throughout the home. The walls are currently Resene Tea with Resene Thorndon Cream on the ceiling and doors/skirting. Ideally it would be great if we could choose a wall colour to go with Resene Thorndon Cream so we only have to paint the walls. The current Resene Tea colour feels quite dark when compared to modern home renos. Our priority is to lighten the interior wall colours especially in the hallway and southern rooms that don’t get a lot of natural sunlight. We want a modern warm white colour, what do you recommend? A. Resene Merino pairs well with Resene Thorndon Cream or if that is not warm enough try Resene Rice Cake or Resene Half Rice Cake. Going lighter will mean that your doors and skirtings will be darker than the walls so to ensure you like this look I recommend you paint two coats of Resene testpots onto A2 card and compare the rooms – please do not paint directly onto the Resene Tea wall colour as this will alter the way the new colours appear. I am a fan of painting the ceiling a half strength of the wall colour, if using the full strength Resene Merino or such, as colours on ceilings tend to shadow, which means they can appear darker anyway – my preference is to paint the walls, skirtings, doors all the same and the ceiling a half tint. If you choose Resene Half Merino for the walls – then you could paint the ceiling the same or Resene Quarter Merino. March 2024 |
Q. I want a light grey with a mauve tinge. I’m not having much luck – testpots have been different to what I have printed off. A. Printed colours will always look different to an actual paint colour – and the mauve undertone will be enhanced in certain lights so it really is a process of elimination. I suggest you look at the pale greys on the Resene Multi-finish colour palettes R64 and R56. In particular Resene Ghost and Resene Mercury have been very popular mauve greys over the years. Resene French Grey is another lovely mauve grey. March 2024 |
Q. I have no idea what colour to paint an outdoor garden shed and the spouting. I plan on building a deck right next to it, what would look good? A. Resene Element is a warm, earthy charcoal which blends into most environments – it is a good option for a garden shed for this reason. March 2024 |
Q. I have to paint a ceiling which is pretty much straightforward, but I want to add some gold pigment colour into the base so that the gold is shining through the base colour and gives a special effect as soon the light get turned on. Is that possible with your gold pigment colour, or is there any kind of way to do that style on a ceiling? A. Resene FX Paint Effects Medium is a translucent product that allows you to add paint into it to create effects finishes. This may well work for you. Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed with a testpot of either Resene Gold or Resene Gold Dust (depending on what type of gold you require) could work well. We recommend trialling it first. You can vary the amount of gold you add to the Resene FX Paint Effects Medium to have a more subtler or a bolder gold effect. March 2024 |
Q. We are planning to use Resene Quarter Villa White on our walls and ceilings. Our kitchen does not get much natural light and has a black stone bench top. We are considering using Resene Bud, but because there are so many cabinets, I'm now wondering if there will be too much green and maybe a neutral like Resene Double Villa White or Resene Double Parchment would work better to be more subtle and reflect more light. A. Yes I agree – it is a matter of finding the right neutral. Perhaps try Resene Double Villa White, Resene Double Parchment, Resene Half Caraway or Resene Quarter Pravda. March 2024 |
Q. I have a master bedroom painted in Resene Comfort Zone and I'd like to carry a 50s-style colour scheme through the other rooms in the house, including a bathroom that doesn't get much light. I'm thinking maybe pink/blush for the bathroom and a pastel green in the kitchen or second bedroom: does that make sense? A. Yes the ideas for your bathroom and second bedroom are great. Check out Resene Soothe, Resene Bone or Resene Despacito (Half Bone) for the bathroom with Resene Transcend or Resene Kandinsky for the bedroom. March 2024 |
Q. We would like your expert advice please as we are looking to repaint our house and garage, workshop/office very soon and are seriously looking at the following Resene paint colours:
If you think Resene Element for the bricks wouldn’t work is there a different darkish colour you would recommend, or should we use Resene Half Merino?? How do you think this will look overall? We have a lot of bush around and are hoping the Resene Half Merino won’t take on a green look. A. Resene Half Merino will look 30% lighter outside – and any white has the potential of reflecting the surrounding colours. Resene Merino does have a green oxide undertone, so it may very well reflect green. I suggest a deeper colour which will absorb a bit more light such as Resene Triple Truffle, with the soffit Resene Milk White, or if you are wanting a lighter weatherboard colour – try Resene White Pointer, Resene Double White Pointer or Resene Triple White Pointer (keeping in mind they will appear lighter) with Resene Black White soffit. The veranda fascias and posts are in Resene Element. To be honest I would leave the brick. It is actually a good feature and ties in the paving and works well with Resene Element and Resene Triple Truffle – if you are definitely wanting to paint the brick I suggest the same colour as the weatherboards, the brick can always be painted last and see how you feel about it. March 2024 |
Q. We are currently repainting the exterior of the house. It is a house built in the 60s of mid-century type design. We are keeping a very similar colour palette, with Resene Quarter Alabaster for most of the outside and Resene CoolColour Black for the trim and the fascias to modernise the look. Our next step is to paint the roof but we are struggling to decide whether it should be a light or dark colour. A. I suggest you paint the roof dark as well to balance the trims and fascias – it will give more depth and character to the overall look. You can consider CoolColour All Black/Black for the roof or a dark grey such as Resene Windswept or Resene Steel Grey. March 2024 |
Q. We have painted an old cottage in Resene Tasman with trims in Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream. We have an old exterior door I would like to paint a softish navy. Do you have any colour suggestions? A. Resene Biscay is a stunning soft navy or you could try the slightly brighter Resene True Blue. March 2024 |
Q. Can you please provide some ideas on colours to paint our house? Currently it is Resene Triple Masala. We would like to go lighter. We have a light grey roof, white garage door and stone on the bottom of the house. We look out over the sea and have some bush around. I am wondering about a lighter green or darker natural colour. A. To modernise the exterior – check out the Resene Tapa variants – they will pair well with your stone and white trims – Resene Tapa, Resene Half Tapa or Resene Quarter Tapa – depending on what works best with the grey roof. Alternatively, Resene Tana is a stony grey with a green edge. March 2024 |
Q. Any suggestions for a contrasting colour for garage doors and front and back doors for a house with clinker brick on the bottom and top storey cedar painted in Resene Tapa. A. Check out Resene Porter. If the doors are currently a pale colour – you might want to investigate Resene CoolColour paints for all the doors, this helps with reducing heat related damage on certain substrates. Resene Porter March 2024 |
Q. I have a plaster house with off white aluminium windows. The roof is FlaxPod and the garage doors and front door are painted to match the roof. I am looking for a light colour for the exterior which works with the window joinery. A. See if any of these Resene colours appeal: Resene Quarter Arrowtown, Resene Half Napa, Resene Half Ash, Resene Quill Grey, Resene Quarter Delta, Resene Quarter Foggy Grey, Resene Truffle or Resene Double Rice Cake. March 2024 |
Q. We have an older house that has wood trims, doors and ceilings. We are intending on painting and replacing the carpet however are unsure on what colours would suit. We want to install a dark carpet as it is a rental property and obviously that hides stains easier. A. If you are leaving the timber ceiling, trims and doors – then look to a colour that is serviceable, but works well with timber, and neutral enough for potential renters to bring their elements. Resene Half Secrets is a palest sage green which works well with darker carpet and pops of colour that people might bring. For a lighter colour – try Resene Merino. If you are painting the trims etc – then I suggest you paint them all the same colour – Resene Merino – this will also work with Resene Half Secrets for the walls. March 2024 |
Q. We are painting our house in Resene Concrete and want to paint the window frames white. We want only a subtle contrast between the two hence the very light Resene Concrete colour. What white has the same undertones as Resene Concrete? A. If you are referring to Resene Concrete, then for a subtle contrast try Resene Quarter Concrete – which is a greyed white. You might also want to check out Resene Half Concrete, but this is a bit more grey, than a white. If the colour is not Resene Concrete – we will need to know the colour name, as most greys have an undertone of colour – and that undertone will give us an idea of which white to pair, for a subtle contrast. March 2024 |
Q. I have painted my bedroom with Resene Half Linen and I am painting the living room and kitchen area in Resene Half Rice Cake. I think Resene Black White will look nice for the trim and the doors however wanted to check, and if you have a better suggestion please share. A. Try Resene Double Alabaster – it is a bit less grey than Resene Black White, so therefore will pair better with both. I am assuming this is for the ceiling as well. March 2024 |
Q. We have an architecturally designed house built in 2010. We have just painted a feature wall in two lounges in Resene Palm Leaf. The rest of the walls and ceilings are in Resene Alabaster (original colour) but in the small lounge it looks more yellow probably because we have warm bulbs in LED ceiling lights and we have high ceilings. What white neutral would work with Resene Palm Leaf? A. Unless you change the light bulbs to a cooler white, then any warm colour is going to be enhanced – in the meantime, you might try a ‘dirtier’ white or a white with a hint of grey to counteract the light – it will look different in the space to what you see online or on a colour chart – and the warm light will add warmth to a cooler colour. Try Resene Half White Pointer, Resene Half Milk White, Resene Wan White, Resene Black White or Resene Sea Fog. You may need to go deeper, so more light is absorbed – Resene Alabaster has hardly any tint so therefore it reflects the warmth of the light – there are lighter variants of the suggested colours. Q. We are looking for ideas for the exterior of a new (to us) house. The existing paint is a white/cream with blue accents. Certain family members like the idea of a charcoal roof and trim, with a white weatherboard. I wonder if this provides too much contrast. The interior has lots of native wood, windows and trim with a white paint finish; so the exterior would need to vibe with that. A. If the windows of your house are the feature, then I like the combination of an off white with a charcoal – it won’t provide too much contrast if you highlight the windows with a white, which will modernise the overall appearance the modern approach today – this includes the sashes, frames, bottom sills and trim. Keep the Resene Charcoal to the roof and gutters, base of the house and the porch and steps – Resene CoolColour paint is great for dark colours outside. A soft grey white will be more serviceable and softer on the weatherboard – colours including whites lighten up to 30% outside, due to natural, bright light – so consider this when looking at the wall colour. See if this combination appeals to get you started:

Q. The outside of my unit is painted Resene Eighth Napa and darker Resene Napa. I wonder if I stained the trellis around the yard in Resene Silvered Grey whether it would look ok? Or do you have any suggestions for another coloured stain? A. With your natural colours – Resene Silvered Grey may appear a bit too blue. Try Resene Iroko or Resene Smokey Ash. March 2024 |
Q. I’m seeing the trend is black exterior paint for houses. I have a flat roof house being built and would like to know what is the popular black paint colour? The roof would be COLORSTEEL® so would need to go with that. A. A popular colour-steel roof colour is Ebony and the match in paint is Resene All Black, or other popular blacks are Resene Blackjack and Double Foundry. Dark colours will absorb heat and heat related issues can still arise. Resene have a CoolColour paint which helps to reflect the heat away from the substrate, hence reducing (but not necessarily eliminating) heat related issues – you can find out more about CoolColour paint online or via your local Resene ColorShop. Check with your builder to make sure there are no colour restrictions. March 2024 |
Q. We presently plan to paint interior walls with Resene Sea Fog in the lounge, hallway and laundry. What colour do you suggest for the ceiling? We are thinking of Resene Half Sea Fog or Resene Quarter Sea Fog. A. Resene Double Alabaster (same as Resene Quarter Sea Fog) will give you a good contrast, without being too stark. March 2024 |
Q. We are trying to decide which joinery colour to use. We are likely to use either Resene Double Concrete or Resene Eighth Stack on the stucco and think using white joinery would be best to use with a 50s house. We had wondered whether to use dark joinery in the middle of the house where there will be a new gabled roof, but we think staying consistent with white throughout would be best. Please advise what your thoughts are? Also which white would you recommend? We were thinking Arctic White to tie into the cool-ish grey and to avoid cream, but people don't seem to use this very much? A. Arctic White is a very cool blue white, which people find quite difficult to decorate with, especially the interior – I suggest you investigate Appliance White. As for the middle with the gable roof – I feel you should stay consistent as this will modernise the overall look, and you have the two different joinery colours at present and it is not really enhancing the house. March 2024 |
Q. We have new joinery – Appliance White throughout the house, plus a Grey friars’ roof and door. Can you advise what white or grey would go well outside and what I should paint the architraves and walls inside? I want a crisp look. The kitchen/dinning get lots of sun, but the lounge is darker. I want contrast between the inside wall and architraves. A. Consider Resene Triple Sea Fog for the exterior walls. For the interior walls consider Resene Black White with Resene Half Alabaster for the architraves. March 2024 |
Q. We are having the exterior of our house repainted and the colour we have chosen and like is Resene Lemon Grass for the weatherboards. It is a two storey house and on the south/west/east lower storey are some small areas of masonry which we have chosen Resene Chicago for. We are getting new gutters in Titania and on the south/west and part east side of house all the windows are being replaced from wood to aluminium in Titania as well as a new deck balustrade in Titania aluminium and glass. The roof paint is Resene Eighth Masala. For the weatherboard window trims/fascia we are going with Resene Titania to match the aluminium and to keep it simple we've been advised to put Titania everywhere on trims/etc. My one concern is our courtyard veranda area, where all the timber windows and exterior is remaining unchanged. This area is not visible from other sides of house. The Resene Lemon Grass is also going there on weatherboards but if we paint everything else in there Titania, the concern is it will be all too dark in there and close the space in. So was thinking keep the soffit around the house a bright white as the veranda ceiling is quite a large area and maybe still keep some of the trim areas still whiter than the Titania All of the retaining walls are a cool white. Any suggestions on the white we should use for the soffit? I also wondered about retaining some other whiter areas in there. It would look great kept in the cooler white all through there but it’s difficult trying to balance it with what we are doing with the other sides of house. Any thoughts you have about the veranda area not ending up too closed in/dark would be really appreciated. A. I wouldn’t bring in another cool toned white – consistency is the best balance of colour. I do agree that you can paint the soffit a brighter white – investigate Resene Alabaster for this area. In the future, consider painting your retaining walls Resene Alabaster to match. All colours brighten outside – they appear lighter en masse – apart from very shaded areas such as your veranda soffit. March 2024 |
Q. We have a 80s cedar house painted in Resene High Tide with a very large pine deck (older) that needs restaining. The joinery is Rivergum. We would appreciate guidance on the deck and balustrading colours to best match. Note the wooden balustrades are Resene Driftwood and the pool fence is a dark green! We also need colour suggestions for the long run roof. A. I suggest you paint the long run roof in keeping with the pool fence, so there is consistency with the metal substrates – and you may change the colour of the cedar in the future so there needs to be consistency with the scheme. Resene Karaka looks like it might work for you. For the deck and balustrades I suggest Resene Iroko which will pair in with the joinery which is quite a dominant colour. March 2024 |
Q. What is the most black paint colour? The house has Ironsand aluminium joinery and the door needs to be darker. A. I suggest using Resene Element, while it is not a pitch black, it is very dark and works well with Ironsand. March 2024 |
Q. We are building an Edwardian village. The next building will be our printing shop/newspaper. We bought two 150 year old church windows which will be installed on the side of the building. We have decided the roof will be Resene Grey Friars. Could you give us some ideas for colours? A. For the sides and rear of the building I suggest Resene Horses Neck, which is a strong green ochre – and will highlight the green in the church windows – and is typical of the era. For the front of the building – I suggest for window frames using Resene Goblin. Greens feature quite a bit for that era. For the front door I suggest Resene Bastille in Resene Super Gloss Enamel, which is a glossy, traditional enamel paint, typically used for front doors and will look fabulous! Resene Bastille is a deeper version of Resene Shark. For remaining areas you might want to bring in a lighter neutral such as a cream like Resene Beeswax. For the signage – consider bringing in a red for the letters such as Resene Lonestar – very traditional and will give the building a lift – for the background try Resene Beeswax or Resene Goblin. March 2024 |
Q. We are considering the following for our weatherboards – Resene Lime White, Resene Ying Yang or Resene Green White. We want to move the colour away from grey to add some life to it. We have grey bricks also and a dark grey roof. We are thinking Resene Rice Cake for eaves. What about the gutters and aircon piping do they follow wall colours? A. The first two colour suggestions are quite lemon, therefore I am uncertain they will pair well with grey brick. Resene Green White might work – it depends on how these colours appear outside in your environment – please note that all colours appear lighter outside. With the lighter colours I suggest you take these up onto the eaves rather than Resene Rice Cake. Consider Resene Iroko for the deck and railings – it has a bit more of the undertone these colours represent, where Resene Tiri is a neutral grey. The gutters are typically the roof colour – so try Resene Nocturnal. As for the aircon piping this is typically the wall colour – depending on where it is located. Check out Resene Quarter Lemon Grass or Resene Kangaroo as alternatives – these will work well with Resene Rice Cake for the eaves. March 2024 |
Q. We are in the process of building at cabin/tiny home. The windows and roof will be COLORSTEEL® Ebony. For the exterior we want to keep it dark but not too dark We can’t decide between Resene All Black or Resene Element. Can you advise what colour would be best? A. Resene All Black is equivalent to Ebony – therefore if you want a softer look I suggest you choose Resene Element – this is also more of an earthy colour and was created to suit our local environment. March 2024 |
Q. We have a two storey house at Waihi Beach. It is currently painted in pale grey tones. We want to freshen it up and get a bit of a Hamptons look. We have used half strength Resene Botticelli using testpots and it looks good. How would it look on an entire house or do you recommend another pale blue? We will be installing facings to contrast do you have a recommendation for a white colour which could match? A. Resene Half Botticelli is not a standard Resene colour, but I do feel it will look quite nice – and definitely give that Hamptons vibe – blues are enhanced outside in natural light on mass, – compared to the more greyed blues – like Resene Quarter Powder Blue or Resene Periglacial Blue – these are subtle and also give a Hamptons vibe when used with pure white. Other softer blues to try are Resene Breeze, Resene Half Halcyon or Resene Duck Egg Blue. With Resene Half Botticelli I suggest Resene Alabaster for the contrast. Resene Half Halcyon March 2024 |
Q. We need to choose a COLORSTEEL® colours and hoping for something lighter than the Scoria we have now to keep the heat down a bit. Of the ones I saw on the COLORSTEEL® website, Resene Stack seemed the most flexible, but I am sure there are other options. We need to keep the house colour light to avoid attracting heat to the weatherboards. I am keen to use colour to make the house look a bit more modern. There will definitely be one new ranch slider going in the garage door space in white to match the new balustrade on the deck. If we are unable to get the bronze windows fixed to our satisfaction then we will probably replace the windows on the two street sides of the house with white joinery also. A. Consider using Sandstone Grey as your roof – it will pair with white and brown joinery. For the main walls consider Resene Silver Chalice, Resene Quarter Silver Chalice, Resene Foggy Grey, Resene Atmosphere or Resene Quarter Taupe Grey. March 2024 |
Q. Can you tell me which Resene colour would best match COLORSTEEL® Permanent Green? A. Resene Permanent Green is the equivalent to COLORSTEEL® Permanent Green and is available in Resene Lumbersider. March 2024 |
Q. I’m doing a residential project where the owners want to paint the walls of their new house the same colour as the roof, which will be Thunder Grey. Should I specify the wall colour as COLORSTEEL® Thunder Grey or is there another Resene colour that is an exact match? I was also hoping to find selected complementary colours for an entry door colour for them, It’s a coastal house. A. Resene Squall is the equivalent to COLORSTEEL® Thunder Grey. Resene Squall is a great colour and pairs well with muted blues for a coastal location – investigate Resene Explorer, Resene Wayfarer or Resene Unite (green blue). Or you might opt for a light neutral such as Resene Ecru White. March 2024 |
Q. I need to modernise the look of my house. The roof is a soft warm colour and we may not be painting it. I would like to make it feel more modern and definitely want to paint out the bricks. Please can you suggest an option or two. A. Here are some options for you to consider: As the roof is a soft warm colour – I suggest these colours to pair for the weatherboards and brick (it will appear more modern if you paint the weatherboards and brick the same colour). Try Resene Triple Truffle walls, with Resene Black White for the gutters, bargeboards, fascias, posts, trims and soffit. Or try Resene Half Fuscous Grey walls (a darker, warmer grey), with Resene Double Alabaster for the gutters, bargeboards, fascias, posts, trims and soffit. If you are going to paint the roof, then that will completely modernise the overall look of the house, options with a painted roof are:
