Q. My 1940s weatherboard house is currently being painted with Resene Half Kumutoto on the boards and Resene Alabaster on the barge boards, door fascias and the box corners. We've gone for Resene Colour Me Pink on the front door to make it ‘pop’. And we have Resene Ironsand on the concrete foundation to match the roof flashings up top.

Now, we have a dressed tongue-and-groove fence out front, and I'm wondering what colour we should paint it? What would you suggest? The fence has capping and visible posts dividing the sections. I considered a neutral/Resene Alabaster or perhaps a darker tone similar to Resene Half Kumutoto.

A. I suggest painting the fence one colour, rather than creating a feature by painting the capping and timber divisions a contrast – simply because the front door is the feature and the structure of the house. Resene Alabaster will be sharp next to the house colours.

March 2024

Q. We have painted our toilet in Resene Manhattan and are trying to think of a complementary colour to paint our hallway.

A. I suggest painting the hallway a similar tone such as Resene Sazerac or a neutral that complements such as Resene Rice Cake.

March 2024

Q. I’m looking for a low sheen white colour. Nothing flash. Just for a three year old’s room until he's old enough to choose what he wants. Can you also tell me how much paint I'll need to paint a 3 x 3 room?

A. Resene Double Alabaster is a good go to white to try. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen as your topcoat – it is low sheen, durable and gives a lovely smooth finish.

March 2024

Q. I have Resene Rice Cake walls in my teenage son’s bedroom. I would like to do a grey feature wall. Please can you recommend a warm grey that will work with Resene Rice Cake.

A. Try Resene Half Taupe Grey, Resene Kensington Grey, Resene Double Truffle or Resene Half Chicago.

March 2024

Q. I have an 80s house with brown aluminium. I want to know two colours that will match. One for the roof and one for the HardiPlank. I don’t like green or red roofs.

A. Resene Taupe Grey looks good on HardiPlank next to brown aluminium windows with Resene Ironsand for the roof and bargeboards.

March 2024

Q. We have reclad our garage and the main colour is Resene Atmosphere with trims in Resene Alabaster. Next is the house and looking for a complementary colour for the front door and barge boards.

A. For the bargeboards I suggest you tie these into the trims – Resene Alabaster.

You have many options for the front door – it might depend on the roof colour, for neutrals check out Resene Fuscous Grey, Resene Foundry or Resene Double Cod Grey – for colour – blues and earthy reds might work such as Resene Avant Garde, Resene Hammerhead and Resene Astronaut.

March 2024

Q. We have a warm brown brick house with a weatherboard entryway and detached weatherboard garage. We would like an updated colour scheme to link the house and garage together. We are planning on doing a Sandstone Grey/Gauntlet roof and gutters on the house to match the existing garage roof and garage door. We are planning on Titania window joinery.

Should windows, doors, facings and soffits be Titania to match the window joinery or a different/lighter white?

Could you also please recommend a colour for the weatherboards on the front entrance and garage that works with both our warm brown brick and the Gauntlet roof/garage door to tie the house and garage together for a more cohesive look?

A. I suggest you consider Appliance White for your joinery – it sits well with Sandstone Grey/Gauntlet.

Resene Half Sea Fog is an equivalent colour to Appliance White and I do think you should paint the windows, doors, facings and soffit to match.

For the weatherboards I suggest Resene Quarter Taupe Grey.

March 2024

Q. I'm repainting my 50s weatherboard house with Resene Foundry on the baseboards and Resene Half Foundry on the corrugated iron roof. What would be a good colour for the walls and timber window trim.

Also, would there be a better colour for the baseboards? The surrounding fences are painted in Resene Foundry?

A. Check out Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey for the weatherboards and consider painting the baseboards the same colour – this will modernise the overall effect. alternately paint the baseboards Resene Half Foundry.

For the timber window trim I suggest Resene Half Wan White or Resene Black White.

March 2024

Q. We're hoping to help our house look more modern. We have a 1990s brick home with a metal garage door, a cedar section and cedar above all of the windows (which are the old brown/goldish aluminium joinery). We are stuck trying to select an appropriate colour that will not make the house look too 70s (with the brown, since we were thinking of matching the joinery) or too blue, as we like the idea of taking some of the blue/grey from the bricks. We would greatly appreciate your recommendation on colour schemes.

A. I feel a softer white works better in this instance than Resene Black White. Resene Shark is a little too blue with the joinery, even though I know it works with the brick, I don’t feel enhancing the joinery will modernise the house. Resene Ironsand works well with both – I suggest pairing it with Resene Wan White which is less brown/grey than Resene White Pointer.

A couple of other options to consider are Resene Fuscous Grey (warm but not as brown as Resene Ironsand) with Resene Wan White or Half Wan White.

Or try Resene Foundry – a little less blue than Resene Shark – with Resene Wan White.

March 2024

Q. I'm thinking of painting our bedroom walls in Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue. I'd like to do the doors and dresser and window architraves in white. But there are so many whites! I guess I need a cool one. Would you be willing to suggest some whites that could work with the blue I've chosen. I am going for a simple, clean, slightly old fashioned look with embroidery samplers and patchwork a quilt.

A. Try Resene Wan White – it is neither cool nor warm – it sits in-between – or Resene Half Sea Fog.

For a warmer white, try Resene Half Rice Cake which might give you that vintage feel.

March 2024

Q. We are painting our house a white colour; however we are not sure what colour white is suitable. We want a Mediterranean/Spanish look with a pale grey roof. We do like Resene Pearl Lusta and Resene Villa White for the white area. The side gate will be stone with greys and brown stone and the window frames etc will be Black.

A. You are on the right track – Resene Villa White or Resene Double Villa White are my suggestion for you.

March 2024

Q. We’re building a house that has Titania joinery. There are areas that don’t get much sunlight so the Titania looks a bit green. I want a white wall colour that looks good with the joinery but doesn’t make the whole place look greenish or grey. My kitchen cabinets are Resene Ecru White (probably Resene Quarter Ecru White) so I think a soft creamy white would be good? Resene Half Rice Cake and Resene Quarter Rice Cake seem too yellow.

A. I suggest trying Resene Merino or Half Merino.

March 2024

Q. What colour would you suggest we paint the front door? The walls are Resene Double Fossil, the garage door is Karaka, and the bricks are Hinuera stone. It was varnished but the wood isn't in good enough condition to do that now.

A. You could paint it Resene Karaka in a Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss finish or for a bolder option consider Resene Deep Teal.

March 2024

Q. I am currently overseas and am trying to choose a scheme for my NZ house.

I have mid green joinery and want to match with blues, greens and natural wood so some ideas where to start looking would be appreciated.

A. Consider colours such as Resene Vantage Point, Resene Green Spring, Resene Secrets, Resene Linen, Resene Lemon Grass, Resene Half Innocence and Resene San Juan.

March 2024

Q. I am really struggling finding colours that we like for our beach house. We have tongue-and-groove vertical panels in the main living and dining area as well as the kitchen. We are looking at a beachfront house look in warm neutrals with perhaps an accent in the hall.

A. Try these Resene colours – feature in Resene Jurassic or Resene Dark Slate, neutral in Resene Blanc or Resene Eighth Tapa and living area spaces in Resene Half Tuna or Resene Westminster.

March 2024

Q. My house has new windows installed, painted in Resene White. I’m thinking to paint the weatherboards in Resene Black White, as I want a very subtle contrast with the windows. However, I’m worried it may be too subtle and look like a mistake/mismatch. Could you give me an opinion and/or suggest alternatives that would look good while being subtle, or should I simply paint the whole house in Resene Black White, including repainting the windows?

A. Try Resene Sea Fog – this looks good with Resene White windows.

You can paint the whole house Resene Black White and allow the contrast of sheens to be the subtle difference.

The decision is whether the windows are a feature – if they are then I suggest that you do use a slightly deeper white for the weatherboards – timber windows do look nice contrasted against the weatherboards if they are in good shape.

March 2024

Q. Our Queenslander is Resene Tapa with Monument and white trims. We have just built a garden shed which has the same exterior cladding as the house but we want to find a lighter grey which complements Resene Tapa (as some of the windows look out onto the shed and we want to reflect more light than Resene Tapa).

A. Try Resene Foggy Grey.

March 2024

Q. We have recently bought a house with a white kitchen and we want to paint the interior walls white. I think I like Resene Black White, Resene Alabaster or Resene Sea Fog. I have three questions:

  1. Which white would you recommend for the walls?
  2. Would you recommend also painting the timber skirting, doors and architraves, or just leave these?
  3. If we paint them, which white would you recommend for the skirting, doors and architraves?

A. I suggest you paint the walls Resene Black White and the doors, skirtings and architraves Resene Alabaster.

The Resene Black White will give a subtle contrast to your white kitchen and the Resene Alabaster will give contrast to the walls – rather than completely hiding everything.

The floor then becomes the timber feature.

Q. My painter arrives this week and I can't make a firm decision. I am painting a room and feature walls in other rooms with Resene Half Lemon Grass. Can you tell me what neutral would look best with Resene Half Lemon Grass? Resene Merino or Resene Half White Pointer has been suggested. In your expert opinion which would look best or can you suggest another neutral? My carpet is a light beige.

A. It is more which neutral looks good with the carpet – carpets have different undertones. The best option for you is to paint the colours onto A2 card (two coats) using a testpot and compare with the Resene Half Lemon Grass and next to the carpet. Resene Merino might appear a bit yellow next to the carpet and Resene Half White Pointer a little grey – but it all depends on the natural light in the area. Resene Half Merino might work better.

February 2024

Q. I have Grey Friars joinery and I painted the architraves in Resene Grey Friars too which I love. My existing accents are Resene Duck Egg Blue and I like them together but I’m not sure what colour to paint the walls. I have Resene Thor in my laundry room and love it but the lounge faces south. So I think a dark colour isn’t right for the lounge. We have high ceilings, exposed white beams, a dark grey couch, duck egg accents and a light grey carpet. The walls are currently an off-white, but I’d prefer a bolder colour. What do you suggest for the walls?

A. To update the room I suggest you soften the effect with a colour which blends in with a bit of depth. Try Resene Robin Egg Blue or Resene Half Robin Egg Blue.

February 2024

Q. We are in the process of having our house repainted. The lower part of the house is concrete block and the top is Linea, which we have had repainted in its original Titania colour. The garage door and our front door have been painted in Resene Bokara Grey. We are looking to possibly paint the Hardiflex interior wall of the carport to further smarten up the house. Suggested colours were Resene Friar Greystone, which we think is too dark given the length of the carport or Resene Half Friar Greystone, which we feel possibly looks a bit neutral. We don't want the wall to be a significant feature, rather a contrast that will be in keeping with the Titania and Resene Bokara Grey which we are happy with.

A. For a subtle contrast the best option is to either tie in the Resene Bokara Grey tones or the Resene Titania tones. Resene Friar Greystone works as it does tie in with Resene Bokara Grey and might not appear as dark as seen on a colour chart. Alternatively, to tie in the Resene Titania tones – see if Resene or Resene Triple Ash work for you.

February 2024

Q. I am after painting the inside of my house a subtle super light blue to set the white ash Oak floors off. Can you suggest 2-3 light blue options please?

A. White Ash floors are so elegant it will need to be very subtle so you don’t lose that – try Resene Aoraki or Resene Poured Milk.

Q. Which orange is complementary to Resene Elephant?

A. Check out Resene Ayers Rock with Resene Elephant.

Resene have a stock library of A4 swatches so you can compare the two colours together – staff will assist you in finding the swatches – from there you may want to paint test pots on to card of both colours and see how they look together in the intended space.

February 2024

Q. I need some advice on an exterior colour for our new house. The windows and roof are Grey Friars. The exterior is Integra panels with Rockcote plaster. The house is large, will get lots of sun and is semi-rural setting with sea views. I want a neutral colour that blends with the joinery, something similar to Oamaru stone perhaps?

A. Oamaru Stone has quite a yellow/cream undertone which I wouldn’t say in a solid finish will blend with Grey Friars – however, see if any of these colours appeal – try Resene Bison Hide, Resene Half Ash, Resene Quarter Napa or Resene Half Akaroa.

February 2024

Q. I would love some advice/suggestions for exterior colour scheme to go with our red roof, I was thinking a shade of white for the wooden window frames and may be a light grey or greige for the weatherboards with a similar complementing colour for the triangle above the weatherboards. The house gets a lot of sun.

A. Try Resene Half Silver Chalice on weatherboards with Resene Half Black White for windows and Resene Double Silver Chalice for the gable ends (triangle). Or try Resene Atmosphere for weatherboards with Resene Alabaster for windows and Resene Tino Pai for gable ends. Or try Resene Archive Grey for weatherboards with Resene Half Sea Fog for windows and Resene Half Chicago for gable ends.

Q. I am looking to change the colour of our house exterior walls to update it a bit. The roof is Resene Permanent Green, garage door Karaka, door and shutters are Resene Pohutukawa, joinery is a Resene Tea type colour and at present the walls are Resene Sepia I have test pots of Resene Ironsand and Resene Bokara Grey. I’m leaning towards Resene Ironsand but would love your opinion on this.

A. Definitely Resene Ironsand will pair well especially with Karaka, Resene Tea and Resene Pohutukawa.

I feel Resene Bokara Grey is a little closer to Resene Sepia and it will be more of an update with Resene Ironsand.

Another option to check out is Resene Triple Dune as this sits quite well with Resene Permanent Green, but if you are happy with Resene Ironsand then this will look great.

February 2024

Q. May I please ask your recommendations for a neutral warm colour for my house, not yellow and not white. And a contrast colour for garage doors? I have railings in a nearly black colour.

A. I suggest Resene Cloud or Resene Truffle, with the garage doors blending with the railings – a charcoal or near black such as Resene Foundry or Resene Double Foundry.

February 2024

Q. I have an acreage property which is weatherboard and has the original anodised bronze windows and doors. We already have Monument gutters and fascias with white feature barn doors. Can you please recommend a house colour that would work with the bronze windows and Monument gutters etc. I am thinking perhaps a light grey.

A. Yes I agree a light warm grey will work. Try Resene Triple White Pointer, Resene Quarter Taupe Grey or Resene Silver Chalice. Colours will appear lighter outside.

February 2024

Q. We have a single story (orange) brick house with a red tiled roof. We are in a very sunny spot and want to paint the roof Resene Grey Friars and are just wondering what you think the best colour in a white range for the orange brick would be? We’re thinking along the lines of Resene Sea Fog or Resene Rice Cake.

A. I’d definitely recommend the Resene Sea Fog family – colour does appear up to 30% lighter outside, so consider Resene Triple Sea Fog.

February 2024

Q. I’m looking for a colour to paint the barge boards and fascia (I thought a brown) to complement the Resene Element colour on my weatherboards. The roof will be COLORSTEEL® FlaxPod. The walls were painted just a couple of weeks ago.

A. I suggest you paint the bargeboards Resene Element to blend – this is the equivalent to FlaxPod and I feel this design can take it.

I suggest painting under the eaves only – if not left natural – a lighter colour such as Resene Double Sea Fog or Resene Sea Fog.

February 2024

Q. I need to reroof and repaint my house. It’s going to cost me about half the value of the house so I want to see what colours would modernise the house? The roof will be either COLORSTEEL® Ebony Black matt or FlaxPod (same as Resene Element) roof matt. Can you advise what red/brown colours match these?

A. I suggest you paint the weatherboards a warm dark charcoal/brown with undertones of red and yellow such as Resene Bokara Grey, Resene Half Bokara Grey, Resene Boris or Resene Kia Kaha – the latter is more of a smoky brown.

They will work with either roof – although I suggest FlaxPod as it is warmer and will suit the environment. Consider a warm grey for the base such as Resene Stepping Stone and a red such as Resene Pohutukawa for the front door.

Q. I need to paint a bedroom I will be using as a sewing room. I have a bright blue-green desk unit that will be my sewing machine table. This bedroom is north facing, with nearly the whole north side being a big ranch slider. The ceiling is high at the back and has an interesting contour, since we live in a half-round barn house. The current paint job was done before we moved here nearly 20 years ago. I'm pretty sure the doors are something like Resene Half Spanish White.

We would like to paint my ‘new’ sewing table, the doors and architraves and the walls.

I had wondered about using Resene Duck Egg Blue or Resene Periglacial Blue, maybe half or quarter strength, for the walls. I had thought white for the doors, but don't know what kind of white. I also considered white for the sewing table but am not sure.

A. I suggest Resene Half Periglacial Blue for the walls and ceiling with Resene Merino for the doors and architraves.

For the sewing table I suggest either painting it a vintage white such as Resene Half Thorndon Cream or adding a sage green with Resene Green Spring, Resene Secrets or Beryl Green.

February 2024

Q. I would like to change my bedroom feature wall. The main colour on the walls is Resene Napa. Would Resene Pure Pewter be a good choice?

A. Yes Resene Pure Pewter should work and is a fabulous colour – it is a metallic finish.

February 2024

Q. I want to paint the exterior of our house and gable ends. Our garage doors, roof, fascia and spouting are all FlaxPod, with the windows in Resene Alabaster. I like the idea of going for a white of some sort like Resene Sea Fog or Resene Triple Black White but am not sure which to pick. We would also like to paint the pillars of the deck. Would we do the same as the house colour or Resene Alabaster?

A. I suggest Resene Triple Sea Fog (it will appear lighter outside). Consider Resene Element (same as FlaxPod) for the timber pillars or Resene Triple Sea Fog.

Do you need the gable ends to be a feature? Food for thought – bringing in a lighter colour or painting them Resene Element (match to FlaxPod) is going to feature them.

If you want to modernise the overall look then I suggest you paint them Resene Triple Sea Fog (the texture and design will still be evident). If they are in good condition you might want to consider using a higher sheen level, such as Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss in Resene Triple Sea Fog, than the weatherboards – this will create further contrast.

February 2024

Q. We have a large monoclad house with a Karaka COLORSTEEL® roof. We have been told we need a light colour to avoid the timber heating up and expanding. I do not like white as it looks too stark. Would Resene Half Tana with Resene White trim look ok with the Karaka roof?

A. Yes, unfortunately there are claddings that are susceptible to heat, but with white windows lighter colours can look lovely. Try Resene Eighth Arrowtown or Resene Ash. These colours are a little more earthy than Resene Half Tana and look smart with a Karaka roof and white windows.

February 2024

Q. My walls are painted with Resene Half Fog and a feature wall of dark purple. I now want to paint the exterior. Can you give me a suggestion to go with the interior?

A. It really depends on what the exterior cladding is and what the house looks like and if there are any existing colours to work with such as the roof and windows that aren’t changing.

A neutral that might work is Resene Kinship or Resene Greywacke with Resene White trims or you could pick up more of the purple undertones with Resene Sonique and Resene House White trims.

February 2024

Q. After a lot of back and forward between the Council and cladding supplier we are starting to make progress. Our first choice was a charcoal roof, Merino EZ Panel cladding, black joinery and spouting, black garage door and front door.

The council have ruled out Resene Merino (too light for this council’s requirements) and so we would like advice on the following please:

  • Charcoal roof.
  • Matching spouting.
  • Black front door and garage door.
  • Black aluminium joinery
  • Resene Taupe Gray cladding.

We did also have a question whether the fascia and posts at the front entrance could be in Resene Titania?

A. Yes Resene Taupe Grey will work and pairs well with Titania – you might also want to check out Resene Double Merino.

February 2024

Q. I have a red house and want to paint the outside windows and doors. I like the idea of a bold door, perhaps yellow or blue? Currently it is the same colour as the house and the windows are white. I also want to paint the entrance deck, currently it a light wood stain.

A. I quite like the idea of a yellow door – it will depend on the red, but check out Resene Wild Thing, it is a versatile bright yellow.

For the deck try Resene Stonewall or Resene Double Friar Greystone. With darker colours it is usually best to use a Resene CoolColour to reflect more heat – ask at your local Resene ColorShop whether a CoolColour will suit your project.

Q. What shade grey goes with Silver Pearl powder coating?

A. Try Resene Triple Sea Fog or Resene Half Silver Chalice.

February 2024

Q. We are going to paint our villa and we have chosen Resene Hermitage as our weatherboard colour. We are struggling with what colour to paint the roof and the garage doors. We will have white trims. We need some help and we don't know whether we should be matching the roof and the garage doors with our fences, which we are going to paint Resene Cinder or whether we should paint the roof a lighter colour and the garage doors white or lighter colour like the roof. We would quite like the roof to be lighter or Resene Cinder but don't know what's best and what we should do with the garage doors.

A. I recommend you paint the roof and garage doors the same colour as they relate to one another. The fence blends into the background which is great and shouldn’t be a feature of the house.

I agree with you that the roof should be lighter, otherwise a black roof like Resene Cinder will be too dominating with a soft weatherboard colour such as Resene Hermitage, which will look lovely by the way.

Try testpots of Resene Lattitude or Resene Gauntlet from the Resene Roof Range for the roof and garage doors. These colours will complement the Hermitage Weatherboard.

February 2024

Q. Could I please get some advice on a contrasting colour to go with Firth Manorstone Brick? The colour is Resene Tranquillity. The roof and aluminium joinery will be FlaxPod.

The other cladding is board and batten and approx half brick. We want a rustic look.

A. See if any of these Resene colours work for you – Resene Quarter Friar Greystone, Resene Half Napa, Resene Quarter Stonehenge, Resene Quarter Tapa or Resene Eighth Arrowtown.

There is a restriction on how dark a colour you can paint board and batten – so these colours fall within the correct LRV range – you might want to check this with your timber supplier or builder.

February 2024

Q. I want to paint my doors and windows in turquoise or aqua blue. I tried Resene Glacier for the doors and windows and Resene Rice Cake for the walls which I have painted in one bedroom facing south. I quite like it I am looking for colours similar but a bit darker. I tried Resene Shakespeare and Resene Hippie Blue they are a little too dark. Eventually I am planning to paint my kitchen cabinets but haven’t quite found the right blue yet. The kitchen is north facing and gets sun all day. Could you suggest me some blue colours which are not too light or too dark for doors and kitchen cabinets please?

A. Check out Resene Idyllic – it is a little deeper than Resene Glacier.

Consider using this for the cabinetry and doors or use a different tone of blue for the doors, which is still complementary such as Resene Hemisphere – it is of similar strength to Resene Idyllic (a little darker) which means that Resene Glacier, Resene Idyllic and Resene Hemisphere all work together harmoniously.

Alternatively, you could opt to repeat Resene Glacier onto the kitchen cabinets, as it is a different room, different lighting, so will appear a bit different with Resene Idyllic on the kitchen cabinets.

Mix and match and see what works best.

February 2024

Q. We are looking at repainting the exterior of our house. It is a 60s weatherboard with a COLORSTEEL® Rivergum roof and gutters. We would like to repaint a light grey, keep the windows white and have a slightly darker grey for the Hardiboard around the piles. Do you have any suggestions for these greys that will work with the Rivergum roof? Should the gable ends and fascia boards match the weatherboards?

A. I suggest Resene Quarter Tapa for the weatherboards and gable ends – it is lighter and greyer than your current colour. For the fascias and eaves I suggest painting them white to match the windows.

For the base consider a deeper variant such as Resene Tapa.

February 2024

Q. Please help me find an exterior colour for my large 1918 weatherboard villa to match Arctic White aluminium joinery and a Grey Friars roof. I appreciate your help as the Arctic White was not the white I was anticipating, so now have to find a new exterior colour!

A. Yes Arctic White is a cool grey/blue white.

Try Resene Silver Chalice for the weatherboards – it does work, although not perfect – if you place too much emphasis on the windows, you will end up with a scheme you are not pleased with. Resene Silver Chalice also works well with Grey Friars and looks lovely on large weatherboard homes.

If you need to paint trims – Resene has a colour match to Arctic White – enquire at your local Resene ColorShop and they can tint it for you. Even Resene White can look cream next to Arctic White because of the blue undertones of Arctic White.

February 2024

Q. I’m getting a new kitchen (shaker style) and I’m looking for a white colour for the cabinets. Originally I liked Resene Quarter Rice Cake but after testing it in my space it’s throwing cream/yellow. So my question is do you have a white that’s still soft but crisp/clean.

A. Have you tried Resene Alabaster? Otherwise I suggest Resene Quarter Milk White or Resene Half Milk White.

February 2024

Q. I am staining my cedar home with Resene Iroko wood oil stain. I am thinking of perhaps painting my eaves at the same time but have no idea what colour would work best. I have brown aluminium window joinery and Resene Iroko goes well. But I just have fibreboard eaves in their original grey which look pretty shabby. How dark would you recommend I go? And what type of paint should I use for that kind of material?

A. If you want a contrast then I suggest a slightly warmer white such as Resene Merino.

You could blend them in with Resene Quarter Arrowtown or Resene Half Arrowtown. There is also a deeper variant – Resene Arrowtown if you want to test that – but I would try the lighter variants first.

Too dark and they will dominate the overall appearance. Resene Iroko is not a deep colour as such.

Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen is commonly used for fibre board eaves – as long as they are cleaned then two coats should do the trick.

February 2024

Q. I’m just wondering what would be a complementary colour for a Tudor style beam? The walls will be Resene Merino and the ceiling Resene Double Alabaster. We would like a dark brown for the beams and picture rail.

A. Try Resene Kina Brown, Half Bokara Grey, Resene Kilamanjaro, Resene Toorak or Resene Monkey.

February 2024

Q. What colour roof paint would go well with a Resene Half Canterbury Clay weatherboard house? What colour would you recommend for the window frames and soffits?

A. Resene Half Grey Friars will work or you might opt for a brighter roof (depending on the style of architecture) such as Resene Explorer. Both will pair with Resene Alabaster for crisp window frames and soffit.

February 2024

Q. We have bought a house built 18 years ago. The colour used inside and out is Resene Napa. It has Resene Napa full strength on the interior walls with Resene Quarter Napa on doors and Resene Eighth Napa on trims. It’s very dark especially with tinted windows. Can you suggest a white that will go with Resene Napa please? I’m reluctant to paint all the doors. I’m very keen to lighten the house.

A. See if Resene Half Sea Fog appeals – I recommend you paint two coats on to A2 card and move around different rooms to see how it looks.

February 2024

Q. I am looking for a colour scheme to repaint our older rural bungalow weatherboard house. We are in the process of getting new aluminium joinery so need to decide on that colour as well. The recently replaced roof is COLORSTEEL® Windsor Grey. Do you have any advice?

A. Try Appliance White for your Aluminium joinery – it sits well with Windsor Grey and will suit your house – it is also a great colour to co-ordinate for the interior – as Aluminium windows affect the interior scheme as well. For the house check out Resene Quarter Silver Chalice, Resene Half Ash or Resene Eighth Lemon Grass.

I recommend testing three colours so your eye can determine which undertone appears best.

February 2024

Q. I am planning to experiment with sunny yellow and green with Resene Glacier, could you suggest me yellow and green with white tone which will complement Resene Glacier?

A. Try Resene Blue Chill or Resene Gulf Stream with Resene Celery, to complement with Resene Glacier.

Q. Our new windows will have Appliance White frames. A roofer has confirmed that our roof colour is Karaka. We have chosen Resene Sea Fog for the weatherboards. What colours do you suggest for the facing boards, scribers and sill around exterior joinery, box corners and scribers (exterior corners of cladding) and barges and fascias (behind spouting and roof flashings).

A. I suggest painting them all the same so that they work with the windows – try Resene Double Alabaster – this will be a bit brighter than the Appliance White but if you matched exactly then there would be no contrast between the weatherboards and trims.

Or you can paint them all Resene Half Sea Fog which works well with Appliance White but will be less contrast.

Alternatively, you can order A4 drawdown paint swatches of Resene Half Sea Fog and Resene Double Alabaster.

Q. My wife and I are having trouble finding the right colour for our bathroom walls in a new build. The bathroom is 2m x 3.7m x 3.2m high ceiling. The walls are tiled with 600x600 Marmo Bianchi (fake marble porcelain) basically a soft white with varying shades of grey/slightly blue veining, grey grout with tiles to about 1 metre up the walls. The walls above the tiles are to be painted. The ceiling is grooved plywood painted with Resene Alabaster and the floor is plain grey, sealed concrete. The bathroom has glazing to the south east so the natural lighting in there is quite soft. But it is well lit with 3 x 2000 Lumen ceiling buttons. There is some dark timber trim and a dark timber vanity with a white porcelain one piece top. The bath is a white acrylic egg colour. All tapware is polished chrome.

A. East facing rooms can emphasise the green or grey undertone, and also facing south means when the light passes in the afternoon, it can feel a bit cold – an off white which works with the harder materials – the marble and concrete yet isn’t too cold or too yellow is the key.

I suggest you try testpots of Resene Half Sea Fog, Resene Half Carrara or Resene Half Milk White (Resene Double Alabaster is also an option but has less warmth).

Q. I am getting our kitchen cupboards professionally painted white. Our walls are Resene Half Merino and the joinery and ceiling are Resene Alabaster. The house is a Cape Cod style. I have thought of Resene Alabaster. Also Resene Black White has been recommended.

A. I suggest Merino for the cabinetry to give the illusion of opening the space, by painting the walls and cabinetry the same – the type of finish will be different to the walls (sheen level) so this will create some contrast between the two. Resene Merino sits between cool and warm and will help to convey the cape cod style, so might be a good solution, alternatively, you might like to try a sample of Resene Half Merino.

February 2024

Q. I am building a house and am wanting to know what colour to have on my kitchen cupboards. The bulkhead and front and sides of the kitchen island are Melteca Storm Pearl. My lounge walls are Resene Triple White Pointer and I have a dark oak floor.

A. I recommend you try Resene White Pointer or Resene Half White Pointer.

February 2024

Q. We are building a 1.8m laminata fence between our house and the neighbour to replace a small back fence and bamboo. We’re keen to look at green options. We’re not sure if light or dark green would look best? Please suggest some options for both for us to explore.

A. I suggest a dark olive green so it blends into both landscapes – such as Resene El Paso. Or other deeper greens to try are Resene Karaka and Resene Eternity. It will need to work with your front door, so this might need to be painted a new colour if it’s doesn’t work with the green.

Q. We are having our ceiling painted in a 1998 brick townhouse. Presently the ceiling is a vivid white and goes beautifully with our curtains and wallpaper. The aluminium windows are cream and paint wise have been matched with maybe a form of Resene Spanish White. We are doing up the kitchen which has cream cupboards and we may have to strip the wallpaper and paint. My question is will a warm neutral go on the walls with Resene Alabaster on the ceiling?

A. Yes Resene Alabaster will go with warm neutrals. I suspect it pairs better with warm neutrals including Resene Spanish White tones than vivid whites.

February 2024

Q. I am stressing out! We are in the process on repainting our house, it's a Mediterranean style. Currently it's Resene Schooner with COLORSTEEL® Desert Sand. I don't think the Resene Schooner works with Desert Sand. We want to go lighter for the colour of the house and were thinking Resene Westar – as this is a grey tone and then for the COLORSTEEL® caps around the house we are thinking Ebony. The windows are new and we went for black windows. What do you think? warm white but not cream! I am too fussy I know, but we have to get this right!

A. If you are going to paint the caps to match the black windows, use Resene All Black (which matches Ebony), then Resene Westar could work well – no particular grey tones pair well with Desert Sand, but the black cap will act as a break for the eye between the Desert Sand roof and walls – you might also like to try Resene Silver Sand.

Painting the cladding a colour which only suits Desert Sand will date the house and limit your options, so go for a colour that appeals.

For the whites try test pots of Resene Alabaster, Resene Half Merino or Resene Half Sea Fog.

February 2024

Q. We are painting our new house using Resene Half Linen on the walls of the bedroom and living area. I need to pick a white for the doors and trims. I have tried a few options but none look quite right.

A. Have you tried Resene Half Sea Fog, Resene Half Merino or Resene Quarter Merino? If for some reason none of these work consider Resene Quarter Linen in a Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss finish.

Please ensure you are not testing colours directly onto an existing white or colour as this will alter the true perception of the whites – two coats of testpots onto A2 card and compared in the space is the best option.

Also ensure you are comparing the whites next to a sample of Resene Half Linen (once again paint A2 card with Resene Half Linen) and not an existing wall colour – as whites will react differently to various colours and reflect tones of adjacent colours.

Q. We need ideas on colours to use on the exterior of our house. We need a roof colour but need to consider possible radiant heat into the house as we have high ceilings. We also need colour ideas for restaining exterior weatherboards to go with blue of our existing aluminium framing. The weatherboards are aged so thinking to avoid dark colours that may warp the boards. Could this be a problem?

A. It really depends on whether you want the blue joinery to be a feature. Certain colours will help to tie this colour into the house and make it less evident.

Darker colours absorb more heat and I definitely recommend a lighter colour for your older weatherboards.

For the roof there are two options – tie the blue windows in by painting it Resene New Denim Blue with a soft grey on the weatherboards such as Resene Concrete or Resene Half Stack – both have LRV ratings which are suitable for weatherboards; if you are concerned about the depth of colour on the roof then consider using Resene CoolColour paint which helps to reflect more of the heat away from the substrate/colour than the standard version of the colour.

Alternately, the best option for less radiant heat is a lighter roof – so consider Resene Atmosphere for the roof with Resene Triple Sea Fog for the weatherboards.

All colours appear lighter on roofs and claddings, so always try your colour combinations with Resene testpots to check you are happy before you start your painting.

February 2024

Q. I'd like to paint my bedroom a dark navy blue, but I want one that has red undertones rather than yellow. Which colour is best suited to what I want?

A. Try Resene Bunting or Resene Blue Night.

February 2024

Q. I'm using Resene Quarter Sisal in my living areas and kitchen, with Resene Alabaster doors, trim and ceiling.

I was wondering what complementary colours you could suggest using in a hallway or bedrooms. I like dusky, understated blues, greens, etc, or another neutral that would complement Resene Quarter Sisal without repeating it. The house is 120 square metres in size with lots of natural light.

A. Try Resene Quarter Akaroa, Resene Double Villa White or Resene Quarter Napa for the hallway, so it links to the kitchen and living areas (or you may choose one of these (or more) for the bedrooms, as well) or for the bedrooms – try Resene Powder Blue, Resene Casper, Resene Robin Egg Blue, Resene Half Emerge, Resene Periglacial Blue or Resene Double Duck Egg Blue.

February 2024

Q. I have a bedroom that has all four walls in Resene Cougar. I want to add a mid-grey as a feature wall. What colour would suit?

A. See if any of these Resene greys appeal: Resene Westminster, Resene Baltic Sea or Resene Half Tuna. The grey needs to contrast or complement the headboard as well as Resene Cougar.

February 2024

Q. We have a single storey (orange) brick house with a red tiled roof. We are in a very sunny spot and want to paint the roof Grey Friars. What do you think the best colour in a white range for the orange brick would be? We are thinking along the lines of Resene Sea Fog or Resene Rice Cake.

A. I’d definitely recommend the Resene Sea Fog family. Colours appear up to 30% lighter outside, so consider Resene Triple Sea Fog.

February 2024

Q. I'm looking for colour suggestions for my house exterior (textured coating and weatherboard). We are keeping the Resene Hot Chile soffits and Resene Beeswax joinery/trim. The current colour is Resene Putty. I'm thinking of a grey/green or grey/blue, white-based hue, LRV 40+, CoolColour formulation.

A. I recommend trying Resene Half Stack LRV 41. It will appear lighter outside. I’d also suggest you try Resene Quarter Delta (LRV 59) or Resene Half Ash (LRV 63).

February 2024

Q. I have a standard red brick house. Because I want to modernise it, and paint the fascia, the soffit and the trim a very dark brown, I am getting new dark Marley spouting for my house in the colour Ironsand. Which Resene dark browns would go best with both red brick and Ironsand spouting ? And does it matter if the spouting is lighter in colour than the paint, or would that look bad?

A. I suggest you paint these areas the same colour – Resene Ironsand – otherwise you risk the spouting becoming the feature. You could look at a slightly lighter colour which tones with Ironsand such as Resene Masala, which also pairs with red brick.

If you would like a browner option then try Resene Double Mondo or Half Bokara Grey which can look more brown in bright light.

Make sure you test the colours carefully outside with testpots as the light will highlight the undertones in the colours.

February 2024

Q. I am looking for an exterior white to go on plaster and weatherboard that will tie in well with our window colour – Appliance White. We are having a black plasma glass front door, black ebony Windsor garage doors and a Dimond roof in black.

I am also looking for an interior white that is warm and cosy, so you have that homely feel when you walk into a room. This will go with a soft oak flooring in the kitchen, living, dining, a light coloured carpet in the bedrooms and hallway and we are looking to do a floor to ceiling tiled bathroom in a light white coloured tile.

I would love to do a feature wall in the master bedroom in a dark green like Resene Palm Green or Resene Bush or something along those lines.

A. For the exterior Resene Wan White should look lovely with your colours and it pairs well next to Appliance White – keep in mind that exterior colours do appear brighter/lighter outside.

For the interior I suggest Resene Half Milk White from the Karen Walker Paints collection which will also work well paired with greens. For the deeper greens, as well as Resene Palm Green and Resene Bush, also try Resene Rolling Hills and Resene Top Notch. I do like Resene Palm Green – this is a fabulous option to work with your scheme.

February 2024

Q. We need recommendations for a fence colour to go with our blue house. The intent is to achieve a premium look as we are selling the property and want to make it appealing to potential buyers.

A. I suggest a dark grey, which is popular for fencing. Try Resene Tuna, Resene Half Tuna, Resene Westminster or Resene High Tide.

February 2024

Q. I'm just specifying colours for a new build and was wondering if you do a lighter shade of Resene Element? The roof, joinery, garage door is FlaxPod and I wanted to do the weatherboard a lighter shade of the same colour.

A. Resene have formulations for half and quarter strength Resene Element available which can be tinted for you at your local Resene ColorShop.

As these are not standard colours, they are not available in testpots, but your local Resene ColorShop could order in an A4 swatch for you.

February 2024

Q. I'm looking at painting an office space with feature walls of Resene Nero, and I'm thinking of using Resene Tea on the walls. I need a ceiling colour. I see Resene White Pointer is a partner of Resene Tea on your website. What would you recommend for ceiling and trims? The floor is polished salt and pepper concrete.

A. The colours referenced are for all sorts of applications – for the ceilings and trims I suggest a slightly cleaner white which isn’t too stark such as Resene Half Sea Fog.

February 2024

Q. My husband is ready to paint and thinks Resene Element is too black! I quite like Resene Half Ironsand but just wanted your pick for what to use on an adjacent wood panel. Would Resene Half Fuscous Grey work?

A. If you are going with Resene Half Ironsand then I suggest Resene Half Masala or Resene Eighth Ironsand for the green panels.

February 2024

Q. Our walls are Resene Half Iron and ceiling Resene Quarter Iron. I would like to change the walls to Resene Quarter Iron. But the main thing is that I would like change the ceilings to ‘white’. Can you recommend a ‘white’ that would work with Resene Half Iron or Resene Quarter Iron.

A. Try Resene Poured Milk (equivalent to Resene Eighth Iron) or Resene Quarter Black White.

February 2024

Q. We have an older house we want to paint and modernise. We were thinking greys/greiges but would prefer not to repaint the roof which is Karaka. What do you suggest?

A. You are spot on – the warm greys will work well with Karaka and the orange brick. Try these Resene colours – Resene Quarter Friar Greystone, Resene Half Friar Greystone or Quarter Stonehenge.

I suggest you keep the bargeboards, fascias and soffit in white and paint the unpainted timber veranda fascias and posts white to match using Resene Black White. Paint gable ends to be the same colour as the main house.

Q. What darker/mid colours go well with Resene Half Athens Grey? We have a 1960s unit block. Upstairs is Resene Half Athens Grey or Resene Quarter Athens Grey and downstairs is concrete blocks. We have matte black aluminium joinery and some black steel roofing visible too.

A. Try a neutral deep grey which relates to the matte black joinery but is still a contrast and will have a modern effect with the brick – such as Resene Half Shark or you might opt to bring out more of a blue base grey, such as Resene Westminster or the slightly, warmer and paler Resene Stack.

February 2024

Q. We want to paint our walls in Resene Moon Mist. Can you recommend a colour for the ceiling? Should we go with Resene Moon Mist on the ceiling too? We have some feature walls in Resene Waiouru.

A. With Resene Moon Mist, warmer whites work well – however, I am not sure that is the look you are wanting to convey. It does depend on the room (what it is used for) and the ambience you are wanting to create but if you want a cocooning feel and a modern approach, then with a colour such as Resene Moon Mist I do suggest wrapping it onto the ceiling as well. With standard height ceilings the colour on the ceiling can appear a bit darker than the walls, I don’t see this as an issue in this instance, as you have Resene Waiouru for balance.

If you do want a paler variant – you could ask your Resene ColorShop to arrange a sample of half strength Resene Moon Mist for you to compare.

February 2024

Q. I’m after some ideas on what colours to paint our house. We were thinking dark green to blend into the trees. We do like Resene Eternity.

A. Resene Eternity is a great option to achieve this. You might want to check out Resene Bokara Grey which is a warm burnt charcoal, that sits well in natural environments. You could also stain any timber areas in a spicy warm colour such as Resene Nutmeg too. If you are choosing dark colours check with Resene ColorShop staff whether a Resene CoolColour is right for your project.

February 2024

Q. I am repainting a room to become my meditation room. So, calming is the goal. I’ve chosen Resene Half Fog, but now that I have painted from a testpot on the wall, it is looking that it may feel too cold. I would want it to be warming. Is there a tint in Resene Half Fog that is likely to give a cold effect? Can you suggest something similar that would be calming and warm? I do want a very pale shade please.

A. Resene Half Fog is a very clean lilac, so it might be why it feels a bit cool. Muted, soft colours will perhaps feel warmer. Try Resene Sonique, Resene I Do or Resene Alluring or you might like Resene Blanched Pink.

February 2024

Q. I have a 1930s bungalow which we have been renovating and have just made open plan in the living areas. I'd love some colour advice for painting it. We will be putting coving by the ceiling and some large skirting boards in a colonial style next to the matai flooring which will be sanded and revarnished. I was contemplating maybe Resene Alabaster for the architraves and skirting – maybe also the ceiling? And I was wondering about introducing a soft dusky green colour to a wall in the living area along with a more neutral colour scheme.

A. Resene Smoky Green could look quite lovely as the feature wall. For the remaining walls check out Resene Sea Fog or Resene Half Sea Fog, with Resene Alabaster for the ceilings, architraves and ceiling.

February 2024

Q. We are currently in the middle of a bunch of renovation work, including rebuilding our retaining wall, entrance way decking and replacing the front door. We are replacing the front door. The new one can be painted. We were thinking of a brown based red colour for the front door. Our current front door was stained a burgundy colour but we’re looking for something richer, warmer but also not too bright. Would you be able to advise what colour might be nice for our front door in your range? Our house colour is a pinkish tinged beige and our trim etc is Resene Karaka (we will be painting our deck the same colour once it is rebuilt in a few weeks).

A. Try Resene Scoria or Resene Savour.

February 2024

Q. I am renovating a 20 year old residential house on a very minimal budget. I have completed the interiors and would appreciate assistance with the exterior colour palette. The roof, joinery and garage are in Resene New Denim Blue and the weatherboards are brown. Ideally I would replace the roof (colour) and paint the exterior (and roof) in a deep charcoal blue. I can't afford to change the joinery. What would be the best colour for the weatherboards to go with the roof and window frames? We want a modern look house.

A. Check out Resene High Tide – it is a deep charcoal blue which is suitable for a roof and weatherboards – I recommend you use a CoolColour paint – as this will help reduce heat related issues that can occur with darker colours.

February 2024

Q. Presently the house is painted in Resene Sisal but we need to repaint and want a slightly different colour. Would painting it in Resene Moon Mist work? The surrounding wall fence is Resene Fahrenheit interspersed with stained trellis.

A. Check out Resene Bison Hide – it is warmer than Resene Moon Mist and will appear lighter outside – but has more depth than Resene Moon Mist and is closer in hue to Resene Sisal.

February 2024

Q. My house is dated and very cream! We have painted the internal walls Resene Half Titania. We would like to update the exterior. We have cream windows and a dark green roof and garage door. What would complement the green and cream that has to stay?

A. Check out Resene Double Ash, Resene Half Craigieburn or Resene Double Thorndon Cream.

February 2024

Q. We are looking at replacing our joinery and reclad most likely oblique vertical. The roof has been painted Ironsand CoolColour a few years ago. What are some cladding and joinery colours that go well with the Ironsand roof? I can’t decide on whether to go dark or light on the joinery but feel darker would be less maintenance. I don’t want the house to look too brown. Also what would be a good front door/garage door colour?

A. I don’t believe darker aluminium joinery is less maintenance – it still shows cobwebs and dirt – a mid-hue might work best and then you can take advantage of the fact you are able to paint oblique vertical a dark colour without heat related issues. Consider Resene Sandstone Grey for the joinery with Resene Element or Resene Bokara Grey for the cladding.

February 2024

Q. I need a black to paint my 1900s villa for my front step please outside and the front door (they are a true black). I also need a grey for the veranda steps/porch etc. We have used Resene Half Alabaster for the front of the house.

A. Check out Resene Nero or Resene Black Sand for the front door – a gloss finish would look great!

For the veranda, try Resene Chicago, Resene Kensington Grey, Resene Stack or Resene Gunsmoke.

February 2024

Q. Can you please suggest three modern grey/neutral colour schemes to paint a home exterior? We have cedar to stain and brick to paint over.

A. The best option will depend on your home’s style. Here are some palette ideas to get you started:

February 2024

Q. Please advise the best colour options for a red roof single storey flat. I want something modern.

A. I suggest to really modernise the unit to paint it all one colour, except for the timber windows and door. Try Resene Tuna with Resene Black White for the timber door and windows. The concrete windowsills will then become Resene Tuna so they don’t stand out.

It is effectively taking advantage of the features such as the fact the cladding can be painted a darker colour and having timber windows suits a soft white as the contrast.

February 2024

Q. I am building a colonial style, weatherboard home. It will have Appliance White aluminium joinery. I am thinking of using Resene Black White for the window facings and soffits. For the weatherboards, I am considering Resene Half Concrete or Resene Concrete.

A. I suggest you try a deeper variant – Resene Concrete for the weatherboards. Colours do appear quite a bit lighter outside due to the way natural light strips back their depth. You might even like to try Resene Triple Concrete as it is a bit warmer for the style of your home.

Resene Black White is a great match with the Resene Concrete family and it will work with Appliance White – it is not perfect but it is neutral enough to pair – for an alternative you might like to try Resene Half Sea Fog.

January 2024

Q. We have a forest green roof (which we will change colour in the future but not now) and will be painting our new cladding soon. We were thinking Titania for the joinery. Can you please give us ideas for colours on exterior and guttering. We quite like blueish greys, but we would like something that goes with the forest green roof and white windows. It's a one level house with two bay windows (which I thought we'd do a different colour to the rest of the exterior).

A. Blue greys generally don’t sit so well with forest green roofs. Titania also has a hint of underlying green. I suggest you look to colours such as Resene Ash, Resene Half Delta, Resene Kensington Grey or Resene Half Foggy Grey – these popular greys will also pair with a change of roof.

January 2024

Q. I am looking for a colour to paint our quite large deck. I have just painted the house in Resene Eighth Ironsand with an Resene Ironsand base and Resene Triple Ironsand roof. We have bronze/brown aluminium joinery. The house looks great, now I’m looking for a deck colour. I like Resene Triple Napa but am not sure if this will look ok with Resene Eighth Ironsand. The other option I thought would be a 'sandy' colour, a bit like a straw hat. Do you think Resene Haystack would work or would it look too yellow.

A. Yes Triple Napa should work quite well – the sandy colours such as Resene Haystack will appear too yellow. You might also like to try Resene Eighth Masala and Resene Stonewall.

January 2024

Q. I have a Kwila deck 140mm wide planks. It is approx 9m long by 3m wide. It is 2 years old. I live at Lake Hawea. The deck has had full sun and has faded a lot. I like the pale grey look of faded Kwila, however, I think it could do with a spruce up. My house is Gull Grey corrugated iron with Warm Pearl White aluminium windows and sliding doors. The eaves and porch ceilings (quite large areas) are elite ply with a creamy whitewash. The porch support posts are Resene Rice Cake. The fascias are painted Resene Gull Grey. My aim was to have a beachy bach look combined with a sort of woolshed look which I think has been achieved.

If I stain the deck, I want it to have a look to blend in with the beach bach look, not compete. I don’t want it to look like the original Kwila it was. In saying that, when it rains, as it is doing now, and aren’t we all happy as second rain this week after months of no rain, the deck when wet goes very dark, like charcoal, and looks great, of course when raining it is viewed from the inside.

What product should I use – Resene Woodsman Wood Oil or Resene Kwila Timber Stain. Also, how do I achieve a pale grey colour or similar? The deck gets hot so pale is better for that reason, but a dark pale, if there is such a thing could work.

There is a long corrugated iron fence coloured FlaxPod down one side of the house. And there is a FlaxPod coloured garage to the other side. The dark works well on these, probably because the section is half an acre, so there are lots of grass and hedges.

A. Resene Woodsman Oil Stain is the best option for your deck. Resene Tiri is a mid-grey that might work or Resene Driftwood is a pale bleached brown which gives a weathered, beachy look. Alternatively, you might investigate painting the deck – then many colours are available to you.

January 2024

Q. I’m painting the exterior of our 1930 bungalow. It’s currently all blue. We are thinking Resene Surrender on the weatherboards with Resene Black White trim. However as we are north facing we are concerned about glare from the trim being white and glossy. The roof and gutters are New Demin Blue.

A. I like your scheme – using lighter and softer colours will enhance the detailing of the house. Resene Black White looks great with Resene Surrender – I don’t feel it is too glary as it is only for trims and quite a popular look. Use lower sheen finishes to help reduce glare.

January 2024

Q. I am trying to find the right colour paint for my office. I have had some testpots. The colour Resene Paddock is what I like, but it is too dark. The next colour on the chart Resene Green Spring is way too light. Can you please tell me if you can get colours in between?

A. Resene Field Day is equivalent to Resene Half Paddock.

Q. We have one wall in a bathroom painted in Resene Conch. I want to paint the other walls white but want to lessen the contrast. Should I get white with a hint of Resene Conch – can you do that?

A. If you white with a hint of Resene Conch (which is basically a hint of blue/green) it will still be quite a contrast – check out other options such as Resene Breeze, Resene Timeless or a soft white such as Resene Merino or Resene Double Merino.

January 2024

Q. We want to sell our house in approx. six months' time. We have had advice from the agents that we need to paint the interior of our house as we have painted rooms in different colours. These colours are mostly gentle colours – light blue in our bedrooms and a light green in our Lounge room and very light brown, almost beige, in our main living areas such as the kitchen/dining and sitting room with this colour continuing into the hallways. We have a lot of wooden furniture of various shades – dark to light. The kitchen benches are also dark chocolate – expresso. We have wooden floors in the main living areas and a light grey carpet in the bedrooms and study. We are unsure about which colour scheme to use. I am not a fan of the grey and white/Hamptons look but I realise we will have to use colours that allow prospective buyers to imagine their furniture and furnishings in the house.

A. Consider painting Resene Milk White throughout with perhaps a soft duck egg blue for the bedrooms such as Resene Half Periglacial Blue or a soft green such as Resene Quarter Robin Egg Blue.

January 2024

Q. We have a 90s cedar house which is currently a mix of black and brown stain which we want to get rid of. We would love to go light grey but the roof and gutters etc are COLORSTEEL® Cloud colour or may be a faded COLORSTEEL® Titania which doesn't suit grey. So we are now thinking of going white. We have been looking at Resene Double Sea Fog as a warmer white or do we go whiter like Resene Double Alabaster.

A. Resene Double Sea Fog could work really well – it is not too stark. Also consider going a bit deeper and warmer with Resene Triple Sea Fog so you get a contrast with the windows.

January 2024

Q. I want suggestions for exterior paint colours for my 1980 Hardiplank wood grain house. At present it is brown with a beige garage door, dark grey roof, brown aluminium windows and white trim and eaves. I’m looking to change from brown.

A. You might like to try these Resene colours – it will depend on the tone of grey for the roof and the beige of the garage door – to how well they pair.

Having brown windows does mean staying away from cool grey or white tones, unless you want the windows to be highlighted.

Try Resene Quarter Friar Greystone, Resene Silver Sand, Resene Archive Grey, Resene Greige or Resene Dune.

Darker colours do attract heat absorption – check with Resene staff whether a Resene CoolColour will suit your project to help the paint reflect more of the sun’s heat.

January 2024

Q. I am painting walls in my villa Resene Half Bianca. What colour would you recommend for the window trims? The same colour? Or another white? Also I need to give the painting a ceiling colour – is there one you suggest? Is it ceiling white? I am also looking for a duck egg blue shade for a living room – would you be able to recommend a Resene shade?

A. Resene Half Bianca is a lovely fresh white with a hint of warmth – it looks great teamed with Resene Alabaster for the trims and ceiling – or if you want a lighter ceiling – Resene Half Alabaster.

Duck egg shades to consider are Resene Duck Egg Blue, Resene Half Duck Egg Blue, Resene Periglacial Blue, Resene Emerge or Resene Half Emerge.

January 2024

Q. The exterior of my house is red brick with dark aluminium window frames and yellowy windowsills and foundations. I have just painted the garage Resene Double Friar Greystone and want a colour to do the sills and foundation. I have put colour samples of Resene Friar Greystone and Resene Half Friar Greystone but am not sure I like these, I think they are too grey. Can you please suggest some other colours that may work?

A. I don’t feel you need to add another colour – you could just repeat Double Friar Greystone onto the sills and foundation to simplify and modernise the scheme. Alternatively, if you do want a contrast consider Resene Half Masala.

Q. I'm looking for an interior colour that will complement white aluminium windows and doors, perhaps a green, blue or grey? I have a 60 square metre home with a raked ceiling. It has a white painted wooden feature wall currently. I want a uniform colour throughout this small space that works with the white window frames and doors.

A. Depending on the particular aluminium white, I suggest a soft grey such as Resene Triple Sea Fog which has a bit of depth and warmth but is light enough for a smaller space.

January 2024

Q. We have a house painted in Resene Lemon Grass. Can you please suggest a colour for the wooden windows/frames, the masonry foundation which varies from low in height to about 1.2m at the other end of the house, the porches, the front and back doors and lastly the fences on either side of the house which separate the front and back yards.

A. For the windows consider Resene Double Alabaster, this could also be for the back door. For the base I suggest painting it the same colour as the weatherboards – Resene Lemon Grass or a bit deeper – Resene Double Lemon Grass.

The fences consider Resene Squall or Resene Karaka and for the front door a deep orange or red might work for you – such as Resene Thunderbird or Resene Arriba.

Q. I'm after some help with the neutral white throughout my house. I've started in my bedroom first with a panel wall in Resene Norway and then Resene Quarter Black White above. I plan to do the rest of the walls in Resene Quarter Black White. Most of the house is in Resene Tea. I'm not sure if I should also do the wardrobe and trims in Resene Black White or make those Resene Alabaster? Also should the ceiling match the Resene Black White? My house and rooms and rooms are not very big.

A. I suggest you paint the ceiling, wardrobes and trims to match the walls above Resene Norway in Resene Quarter Black White. The finish will be different (generally low sheen for walls, flat for ceilings and semi-gloss for trims) so this will create contrast.

January 2024

Q. We have Resene Half Kumutoto on a kitchen splashback in an open-plan space, with a neutral colour on the walls throughout the rest. The current neutral has a tad more yellow in it than I would like. Can you suggest a good neutral match for the Resene Half Kumutoto that would be a bit less cream? The cabinetry is white. I am also thinking about painting the living room side of the space in a complementary shade but perhaps a tone or two darker, would you recommend?

A. I suggest Resene Half Sea Fog with the living room in Resene Sea Fog or Resene Double Sea Fog.

January 2024

Q. We are using Resene Indian Ink for our kitchen walls. What would be a complementary neutral/taupe colour for our cabinetry (and would you paint the ceiling the same as the cabinetry)? Our bench will be a mainly white with a dark speck Formica.

A. Check out Resene Half Tea for the cabinetry. Try Resene Half Black White on the ceiling.

January 2024

Q. I am looking to paint the wall opposite my kitchen cabinets. It is a small apartment. One feature wall is already lime green. I am thinking of a purple colour – but I don’t think can be too dark – although I would like a good splash of colour, and I’m open to any other colour ideas.

A. I suggest checking out a smoke lilac such as Resene Mamba or a warm grey with purple undertones such as Resene Innuendo or for a brighter option Resene Staccato or Resene Covert.

Some of the colours suggested may appear muted but might intensify depending on light when you test them.

January 2024

Q. We have an older villa and want to go for a black-and-white theme on a repaint. But I'm worried about using black colour with sunlight/heat on the roof and the trim of the house. Also I don’t want stark hard cold white, but not a warm white either.

A. Firstly I think you should investigate Resene CoolColour paints to see if they would suit your project. Black absorbs the most light out of all colours – so the heat issues are of real concern – however, this is a classic and can look fabulous. CoolColour paints are basically where due to clever pigment technology more of the sun’s harmful rays are reflected away from the substrate, reducing heat related issues.

Whites to investigate are Resene Merino, Resene Sea Fog or Resene Rice Cake.

Colours, including whites lighten and brighten in natural light – so it is not advisable to go a shade whiter on weatherboards than the depth of whites suggested.

Q. I would like to get some advice on a colour scheme for our exterior. There was an alteration done and we now have new Linea board on the gable end to paint. We are working with the pink brick for now. The deck is Kwila and gets oiled, so it will remain the red Kwila colour. The joinery is Silver Pearl and the roof is Grey Friars. We are getting new spouting in Grey Friars. Basically everything but the bricks will be painted.

Any advice on a cohesive colour scheme will be much appreciated as I know there is quite a bit going on.

There is a small shed in the driveway that is Grey Friars but it needs a new door, and a separate garage that we will replicate the colours on.

A. I suggest you simplify the scheme so the overall appearance feels cohesive – which means repeating the tone of the roof onto the Linea rather than bringing in another colour – fortunately with Linea darker colours are not restricted.

Consider Resene Grey Friars, Resene Half Grey Friars, Resene Tuna or Resene Half Baltic Sea (warmer than the others).

January 2024

Q. We are painting our villa Resene Kangaroo with Resene Half Tana sills and Resene Bianca for window frames. We need to reroof. FlaxPod was suggested, but I think it is a bit too dark? Would COLORSTEEL® Slate be a good option?

A. Yes COLORSTEEL® Slate will look lovely with that combination.

January 2024

Q. I have a 1980s red brick house with a charcoal roof which I am currently renovating. I will be repainting the eaves, the lower blockwork and cladding on the new deck. The deck balustrades are enclosed and clad with Titan board. This has also been used as cladding around the front entrance. The house is quite imposing looking from the street as it sits on a slope, so I would like to try and soften it a bit.

Would you have any suggestions as to what colour I could use on the eaves, the blockwork and the deck cladding?

At some stage I may paint the red brick as well, depending on the cost, so need to keep that in mind. Whatever colour I choose will have to look good with the red brick as is or give me some options if I choose to paint them.

A. Consider using Resene Triple Thorndon Cream for the blockwork and deck cladding, with softer Resene Thorndon Cream or Resene Half Thorndon Cream for the eaves, and possibly the porch vertical cladding. Adding a charcoal such as Resene Baltic Sea to the front door could really modernise the house.

January 2024

Q. We are planning on having the exterior of our house repainted. We're keen on a darkish grey roof and light grey walls, but we are concerned with the bronze joinery clashing. We don't want to paint or replace the joinery so are there any greys that would match or alternatively would you recommend something else colour wise.

Also, what would your recommendations be for barge/fascia boards, gutters, downpipes, balustrades, soffits and the wooden front door?

A. Look to the warmer greys such as Resene Quarter Taupe Grey, Resene Eighth Friar Greystone, Resene Silver Sand or Resene Silver Chalice – colours do appear lighter outside. I suggest painting the downpipes the same colour.

For the gutterings, fascias, balustrades, bargeboards and soffits consider a soft white such as Resene Wan White to reduce contrast – this way the colours pair together but with definition.

For the roof I suggest Resene Nocturnal – you will need to consider painting the garage doors Nocturnal so the new scheme works.

The front door I would also recommend Resene Nocturnal in a semi-gloss finish or alternatively you could choose an accent colour such as Resene Fire or Resene Teal Blue.

January 2024

Q. We are looking for some colours for our stucco house. We were considering deck in Resene Kwila, trims/fascia/both stair handle rails in Resene Alabaster or Resene Black White and front and back door in Resene Pohutukawa.

We were thinking of a green-grey tone or a blue-grey tone for the stucco and a darker colour of what we pick for the base and concrete steps. Did you have a particular colours that you would recommend?

A. I suggest you paint the base, steps and stucco the same colour and a colour with depth such as Resene Tuna or slightly softer and greener based Resene Quarter Gravel with Resene Black White for the windows and eaves.

That way the overall appearance is completely modernised and the windows and deck, plus the red front door will be the contrast.

Alternatively you might want to look at lighter blue greys such as Resene Ted with Resene Shuttle Grey for the base and steps. Resene Black White will still pair well.

January 2024

Q. We have vertical panels on the side fence and entranceway which is currently a denim blue colour. We are looking to change that but are unsure of what to pick. The house has blonde bricks and black everywhere else (garage, front door, roof and horizontal boards). We like something along the lines of the Resene Pewter, or other similar sage colours. Inside the house is currently white throughout most of the rooms and we are looking to have small amounts of mustard or terracotta tones, so I'm after something that will complement both the outside as well as our internal plans. Could you offer any suggestions as to what we could paint the exterior vertical boards?

A. Sage green is a great option – try Resene Field Day, Resene Vantage Point, Resene Paddock, Resene Half Rivergum or Resene Ravine.

January 2024

Q. I have a standard red brick house. I want to modernise it and paint the fascia, the soffit and the trim a very dark brown. I am getting new dark Marley spouting for my house in the colour Ironsand.

January 2024

Q. We are renovating a beach house and want to use a light grey on rendered external walls to complement Woodland Grey garage doors and smoked glass on a deck. We also have a stairwell that has cladding – should I also paint it Woodland Grey as a feature to match roof gutters and two garage doors. Do you have a better idea?

A. Yes, repeating colour to simplify the scheme, while still creating contrast is a great idea. Try Woodland Grey (Resene Squall) for the stairwell cladding – just check with your builder perhaps, that the cladding is suited to a darker colour.

For the main body investigate these Resene light greys (also note that colours do appear lighter outside) – Resene Quarter Tapa, Resene Quarter Silver Chalice or Resene Half Delta.

January 2024

Q. We have an 1860 house and want to change the colour to something fresher and lighter looking.

A. I suggest a clean light grey such as Resene Half Iron for the weatherboards, with a sharp white such as Resene Quarter Black White for the windows, window frames, sills, window cappings and ornate detailing. I would also paint the bargeboards, fascias and eaves Resene Quarter Black White.

January 2024

Q. We have a Windsor Grey COLORSTEEL® roof and are thinking of painting the walls Resene Uhi with the soffits in Resene Black White. Will this complement each other?

A. Yes they complement each other. How it looks overall will depend on the architectural design.

January 2024

Q. I’m looking for an interior colour for my walls. I have Resene Half Bianca on the trims and Resene Tea but I’m wanting to go lighter than Resene Tea. I also have Resene Half Rice Cake on the kitchen cabinetry.

A. Check out Resene Eighth Akaroa, Resene Half Tea, Resene Quarter Tea or Resene Blanc.

January 2024

Q. What is the best colour for a full internal paint that's light but not stark snowy white?

A. It will depend on lighting and what other colours you are working with – however check out these light soft whites – Resene Half Milk White, Resene Half Rice Cake, Resene Half Sea Fog and Resene Merino.

January 2024

Q. Can you tell me a few art deco green colours please for my lounge and dining room? I'd like to make it brighter.

A. You might like to check out some of the greens from one of Resene’s earlier colour charts – BS5252 – in particular Resene Chinook, Resene Bay Leaf and Resene Amazon are Art Deco greens.

Alternately you might like the more intense Resene Kaitoke Green or Resene Wasabi from the multi-finish palette of colours or the sightly muted Resene Amulet.

January 2024

Q. We have a 1960s weatherboard house, currently painted in Resene Tea or Resene Half Tea. We need to repaint. I don't mind the colour but would like something greyer in tone. We have a new roof in Grey Friars. I'd like a warm grey to tie in with that if possible. My husband hates most greys though as he finds them all cold, or too dark but to contrast with the window trims (that will be painted ‘warm’ white, or off white (not cream). Or is there a similar colour to Resene Tea that has less brown tone please? I'm not a fan of creamy/yellow tones.

A. Check out Resene Triple White Pointer, Resene Double Truffle or Resene Quarter Taupe Grey.

January 2024

Q. I’m looking for colours to repaint an exterior and roof. I’m thinking Resene Element (CoolColour) for the exterior (or similar). I’m looking at alternatives for the roof and garage door.

A. I suggest you paint the walls Resene Bokara Grey or Resene Fuscous Grey and the roof and garage door Resene Element to modernise the overall appearance.

January 2024

Q. I am painting my daughter's bedroom (she is 14 years old), and she has chosen an accent wall of Resene Permanent Green. She would like to paint the rest of the walls grey. We are struggling to find the right colour grey to complement the green. Of note, the carpet is black and her duvet colour is black with green tones. The room itself is quite a dark space with some afternoon sun in the summer.

A. Resene Permanent Green is a fabulous bedroom colour and pairs well with greys – try Resene Silver Chalice, Resene Double Concrete, Resene Concrete or the warmer Resene Grey Seal or Resene Westar. Bringing in a few green plants will add life to the room as well.

January 2024

Q. The top half of my house is painted in Resene Truffle, the lower half in Resene Masala and veranda posts in Resene Triple Masala. I am having a new wooden front door with brass hardware, what colours would you recommend that I paint it? The existing door is painted a Resene red but I want a change. There are some orange-coloured bricks in a nearby retaining wall but I'm not sure that orange and polished brass would go together. Would Resene Triple Masala be too dark?

A. I have seen certain oranges with brass hardware. This can give a mid-century feel.

I suggest painting your front door Resene Triple Masala for a modern look and to tie in the veranda posts. It is good sometimes to repeat colour – and Resene Triple Masala is a modern colour which is not too dark for a front door. Consider using a gloss finish, such as Resene Enamacryl, to really make it pop.

Q. We are building a small rental property. It is right next door to us so I want it to blend, without matching. We have a Hamptons style house with white trims and a Grey Friars roof. I'm considering either blue/grey (different to ours) with a lighter grey roof (maybe Gull Grey) or alternatively doing a soft/dirty white exterior with white joinery. As the house is a basic design I would like to have it looking sharp.

A. Although Gull Grey is at home with a Hamptons vibe and looks great with white joinery and dirty white exteriors or soft blue greys, I am concerned as the house is a simple design that you might not get the impact you desire. Consider matching the roof with Grey Friars, with white joinery and Resene Triple Sea Fog or Resene Quarter Silver Chalice for the walls.

January 2024

Q. We are painting the walls in our new house Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream. For the ceilings and covings I thought of Resene Alabaster. Would you recommend colours for the skirtings, doors and trims. I am thinking maybe Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream but would appreciate suggestions. I want the overall look to be soft.

A. Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream is a lovely soft white and it pairs well with Resene Alabaster and its own variants. For a soft, subtle overall feel, you are correct in considering Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream for the skirtings, doors and trims.

January 2024

Q. We are painting the exterior of our ex state house which is brick and weatherboard. We have a black concrete tile roof in the colour Resene Sambuca. I am considering an off white/cream for the weatherboards and leaving the brick for the moment. Could you advise a colour that would suit the roof and bricks? Our interior is painted with Resene Alabaster trim and Resene Bianca walls.

A. I am assuming with the era of your house that the brick is red or orange toned.

To complement this a warm white with a slight yellow undertone will not compete with the brick and will look sharp with a black roof. Resene colours to consider are: Resene Thorndon Cream, Resene Rice Cake, Resene Merino and Resene Double Bianca. Colours do lighten outside but there are lighter variants of the suggestions you could try if preferred.

January 2024

Q. I'm still searching for a colour for my study. It's a fairly dark room on the bottom floor of a light-filled terrace. The living rooms, main bed and entrance will be painted in quarter strength Resene Sante Fe. My husband's study will be Resene Bluff. The guest bedroom will be Resene Birthday Suit. All floors will be a light grey tile. I'm considering Resene Moleskin or Resene Eighth Friar Greystone for my study but would like something more interesting. Do you have a lighter blue in the Resene Bluff direction or other suggestions?

A. See if Resene Dusted Blue, Resene Clouded Blue or Resene Quarter Powder Blue works for you or a green such as Resene Eau De Nil, Resene Half Robin Egg Blue or Resene Quarter Robin Egg Blue.

January 2024

Q. The current roof is painted Resene Ironsand and I’m looking to reclad and double glaze with new joinery. If I use Ironsand joinery, what colour cladding (Linea oblique vertical) would you recommend and what colour soffits? I think the soffits are currently Resene Quarter Rice Cake.

A. I suggest taking advantage of the oblique cladding and paint it a darker contrast to the roof and joinery – this will also modernise the overall appearance. Check out Resene Bokara Grey, Resene Element or Resene Porter. For the soffits I suggest Resene Half Sea Fog.

January 2024

Q. We’ve decided to paint our two bedroom, stucco 1950s house using Resene Burgundy. We’re very excited but are unsure what colour to do the roof (it is quite a steep pitch). I like the idea of either a light or dark grey. We’re open to suggestions, but the preference is for something not an ultra deep tone. We’re putting in new UPVC windows to maintain the timber appearance which will probably have white sashes and are keen for suggestions for the house trim as well to tie everything in! We don’t mind experimenting with colour and will probably choose a different front door colour that pops.

A. I suggest you use the same colour for the roof, brick windowsills and base – then have the pop of colour for the front door and the white sashes. Try Resene Tuna, Resene Nocturnal or Resene Element.

January 2024

Q. We want to go some kind of contemporary grey or possibly something else that will last the test of time on our block house. The cladding on the second storey is black cedar. The garden is a NZ/Japanese hybrid. Any suggestions for the front door would be great too – perhaps a pop of colour. The joinery we are gradually replacing to black.

A. As you are eventually changing your joinery to black, I suggest a grey on the darker side for the concrete blocks. See if any of these appeal: Resene Double Silver Chalice, Resene Triple Concrete, Resene Half Tuna, Resene Westminster or Resene Kensington Grey.

For the front door consider picking colours from your garden such as Resene Grenadier or Resene Wild Thing.

January 2024

Q. We bought a house seven years ago and it still has the original colour scheme for when the house was built in 2002 in most of the rooms. The interior is mainly Resene Half Spanish White – the walls, ceiling, skirting’s, architraves and doors. I did repaint my study in Resene Quarter Spanish White for the woodwork, Resene Eighth Spanish White on the ceiling and Resene Shilo on the walls which works with the Resene Half Spanish White doors and built in cupboards.

I don’t want to get the doors throughout the house repainted but can you suggest bright, fresh, more modern neutrals that would work well with the doors? I definitely want lighter ceilings.

A. The Resene Spanish White family does work best with its own variants – therefore I suggest you paint all the walls and woodwork Resene Quarter Spanish White – this will lift the appearance and won’t enhance the door colour – the woodwork will be a semi-gloss and so this will create some contrast. The ceilings I suggest Resene Alabaster which will really lighten the spaces and modernise the overall look – from there you will be able to add layers of accents in furnishings and the study becomes your own personal space but relates to the rest of the house.

January 2024

Q. I am repainting my small bathroom. All my fixtures are white and chrome. The floor will have sheet vinyl in a white-washed wood colour. My towels are 'Bright Aqua'. There is plenty of natural light with three windows. Can you tell me which white would be best for the walls and ceiling?

A. It really does depend on the tone of white for the floor – I would think that Resene Alabaster will look sharp with the towels but it might be a bit stark with the floor, so then I suggest you check out slightly warmer whites such as Resene Quarter Rice Cake.

Take a sample of the sheet vinyl and towel into a Resene ColorShop as they have a stock library of A4 samples which you can then look at all the tones together.

January 2024

Q. I am painting my garage interior. I have new whiteware and am looking at installing a bench over these to the laundry sink. The interior door to the house is Resene New Denim Blue, so are the cabinet drawers (with white surrounds) and storage cupboard door. What neutral colour would suit the rest of the garage. Also what would work for the ceiling unless the same colour should be used there also?

A. Check out Resene Sea Fog or Resene House White. Yes use the same colour for the walls and ceiling.

January 2024

Q. I have painted the exterior in Resene Half Masala and will paint the windowsills in the same. What white should I use for the windows?

A. For the window sashes I suggest you match these to the white eaves and bargeboards above – if you know what the white is – otherwise I suggest painting the windows, bargeboards and eaves in Resene Half Sea Fog.

January 2024

Q. We’re painting our stucco house and considering a neutral as it has many large, square slabs (currently grey/blue) that are tricky to paint the right colour. We need something that has a high LRV and goes well with silver aluminium window frames.

A. You could go softer to go with the silver windows – check out Resene Half Silver Chalice, Resene Ted or Resene Triple Sea Fog.

January 2024

Q. I’m working with a dusky pink something like Resene Petite Orchid from an older collection on my walls. Could you recommend a ceiling colour that is not white? This is a small north facing study room.

A. As it is a north facing study – cooler toned colours on the ceiling might work better – check out Resene Transcend and Resene Aoraki – the latter is a white but it is an interesting blue white. For slightly warmer options try Resene Kinship or Resene Half Robin Egg Blue.

Q. We have outdoor furniture which needs painting. What colour would you recommend that would complement Resene Tea? I think we are after a darker colour as lighter colours will get too dirty.

A. Check out Resene Awaroa Bay, Resene Pale Oyster, Resene Nomad, Resene Mondo or Resene Double Stonehenge.

January 2024

Q. We want to paint the exterior of our house and are unsure what colour to paint and would appreciate some advice. We have Resene Ironsand for the roof and fence and silver aluminium joinery. Inside we have Resene Quarter Ash for the interior walls and Resene Eighth Black White for the trim.

A. See if any of these colours appeal – Resene Half Tapa, Resene Quarter Tapa, Resene Half Ash, Resene Quarter Taupe Grey or Resene Half Delta.

January 2024

Q. Would this scheme look good on a 1960s weatherboard house? Weatherboards in Resene Tea, grey COLORSTEEL® roof staying the same, steps, stucco base, window and door frames in white and doors and external windowsills in Resene Pohutukawa.

A. Yes it will, but I would keep the windowsills in Resene White.

Also consider Resene Half Cougar for the weatherboards which is slightly less yellow than Resene Tea.
