Q. I really like the colour Resene Gondwana but am looking for something slightly darker but in the same tone. Do you have any recommendations? A. Try Resene Gecko – possibly a bit more blue or Resene Rivergum – possibly a bit more grey/green. If you want the exact green but deeper – talk to your local Resene ColorShop about getting a darker version of Resene Gondwana made for you. June 2023 |
Q. . I'm repainting the interior of my house. It's a 1991 Fletcher build with plasterboard walls, white painted skirtings, scotia and ceilings and grey carpet. The place gets good sun in the lounge and two bedrooms but the other rooms are shady. I am looking at reselling so want something generally acceptable. I have tried some Resene testpots and have a shortlist of – Resene Alabaster – which I thought might be a bit too much like pure white and pretty luminous, Resene Half Rice Cake – maybe too much of a tint to be really neutral or Resene Double Alabaster – perhaps a good in between? I'm thinking of going with the Resene Double Alabaster but just thought I'd run it by you guys first, so any input would be welcome! A. Try Resene Merino for the light sunny rooms – which will visually counteract the warmth of these areas and if possible Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream for the bedrooms – which is a bit warmer, considering some rooms are on the cooler/shady side. A slight shift in tone helps to modernise the overall look and creates visual interest. The Resene Alabaster family might be a bit stark for this style of home and yes Resene Half Rice Cake might appear a bit warm – if you do want one colour only you might like to test Resene Half Sea Fog or Resene Quarter Rice Cake – but neither are perfect for every room, due to the different aspects. I suggest you paint A2 card available at Resene, with two coats of testpots of any colours which appeal and move around the rooms to see how the colours appear – you want to create an inviting calm aesthetic. Q. I need some advice for paint for a living area which has four windows, north west facing and is sunny. The colour scheme is very neutral colour and we will replace taupe carpet with hybrid floors (natural oak). I thought of Resene Tea but read it can be a chameleon paint! Curtains will be linen or sand colour. Please suggest paint for walls, ceiling and trimmings. A. All colours are chameleons if you use the same strength or tone in different rooms as not all rooms have the same lighting and decor – even certain walls of your living room you might see a change in tone with whites, neutrals and colours – especially with some lighter neutrals, depending on the aspect of the room and surrounding colours. Undertones can be enhanced and not always welcome. In north west facing rooms deeper variants work better as there is constant light and I suggest a neutral with a slight green base to counteract the warm light and it will pair well with your oak floor. Try Resene Bison Hide, Resene Half Bison Hide or Resene Quarter Bison Hide or for a neutral beige – Resene Sandspit Brown from the Karen Walker Paints collection. For the ceilings and trims consider Resene Alabaster to pair with the white accents and kitchen. June 2023 |
Q. We have an old Lockwood and the wood, particularly on doors, is deteriorating – dark and also sunburned in places where it has lost its polyurethane. I want to paint the entryway a light colour on the back wall, maybe a light green a bit darker Than the cupboards – and the rest of the entry maybe a white to suit the Lockwood. The kitchen has light green/blue Formica lower cupboards and Oxford green upper cupboards, beams and framing. I want to paint the bathroom and the separate toilet light colours, maybe a white too. We are also painting the doors in the lounge and hall maybe the same Resene Rhino as the beams and frames. Can you help with colours that will work with the wood and existing decor? A. For the white – try Resene Rice Cake, Resene Half Rice Cake or Resene Half Albescent White – these warm whites work well with Lockwood. Yes I agree keep the doors and the door frames which are/will be painted the same (Resene Rhino). For the entryway see if any of these greens appeal – Resene Periglacial Blue, Resene Eau De Nil or Resene Pewter. Consider Resene Eighth Lemon Grass for the toilet and bathroom – it is a pale green/neutral. Resene Eau De Nil June 2023 |
Q. What blues go best with an Ironsand roof? A. Greys with a blue undertone or dusky blues – if you are looking for weatherboard colours – such as Resene Quarter Silver Chalice, Resene Half Silver Chalice, Resene Duck Egg Blue, Resene Half Dusted Blue or Resene Half Halcyon. Resene Half Halcyon June 2023 |
Q. Our bedroom and ensuite are painted in Resene Spellbound, but we are having to replace the shower so would like to repaint the ensuite to freshen it up, while keeping the warm tones of the bedroom. The ensuite is around 3m x 2.5m with some natural light. The floor tiles are a similar colour to Resene Tea/Resene Half Tea with some greyish streaks. The skirting boards are white. We're thinking of something like Resene Lemon Grass, Resene Gargoyle, Resene Double Tea, Resene Napa or Resene Eighth Napa but have no idea. A. Resene Lemon Grass or Resene Half Lemon Grass could work well or try Resene Foundation or Resene Linen. June 2023 |
Q. I live in a 2-bedroom (116 sqm) apartment on West Quay. The only external light comes from floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows off the open-plan living/kitchen and the master bedroom. (The entire wall is glass.) What colour doors and frames would you suggest to go with Resene Alabaster walls and ceilings? I prefer neutral colours and had thought of a soft grey of some description. Currently, the doors are a kind of duck egg green/blue. A. Most greys will go with Resene Alabaster – are there any other accent colours or neutral tones you need to consider – then we can look at what type of tone of grey will work i.e.: cool or warm. Consider the kitchen colours and flooring throughout – as you currently have a duck egg type colour on the doors, these sort greys may work: Resene Quarter Silver Chalice, Resene Half Atmosphere, Resene Double Black White, Resene Triple Black White, Resene Quill Grey or Resene Silver Sand. June 2023 |
Q. Can you recommend a yellow to go (in small amounts) with Resene Sunbaked, Resene Soulful and Resene Half Spanish White? A. I would be looking to a yellow with a mustard or gold undertone such as Resene Sunbeam or Resene Salted Caramel or if it is in small amounts you might like to consider Resene I Dare You. Resene Soulful Resene Sunbaked Resene Salted Caramel Resene Sunbeam Resene I Dare You June 2023 |
Q. We have painted a lot of our interior with Resene Akaroa and Resene Half Akaroa. I would like to branch out to something different for the bedrooms, but something which also complements Resene Akaroa, which is in the hallway outside the bedrooms. The carpet will be a duck-egg blue. What about Resene Half Linen, Resene Half Tana or Resene Joanna? A. You are on the right track – any of those neutrals you mentioned might work well – you might also like to consider a slightly stronger colour such as Resene Beryl Green or Resene Quarter Taupe Grey. I suggest you paint A2 card with two coats using Resene testpots and attach to the bedroom walls to see which colour pairs well and works best in the different bedrooms as each will have a different lighting aspect – so therefore slightly deeper might appeal. June 2023 |
Q. I am painting my house and am looking at using Resene Element on the front door and fences. I wanted to check what neutral white might look best. It is a 1920s bungalow, with no particularly special features. A. Check out Resene White Pointer or Resene Double White Pointer for the weatherboards. These neutrals will appear lighter outside – hence why it is best to sometimes go a little darker than anticipating, and they have a slight warmth to them so sit well with Resene Element – you might like to pair either of these colours with Resene Quarter Black White. June 2023 |
Q. We have an apartment that is being upgraded. The complex designer has suggested Resene Alabaster for the walls. Do we paint the doors, skirting and scotia the same? A. It really is up to you – some people prefer using the same white everywhere (especially to visually enlarge a space) and the sheen levels will change, which helps to create interest – generally Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for walls and Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss for trims etc. What we are seeing at the moment is subtle shifts with white on white – Resene Alabaster walls and ceilings with Resene Black White for the woodwork, including doors – if you have standard size ceilings you might also like to consider Resene Half Alabaster for them – this creates the illusion of the ceiling being higher. June 2023 |
Q. We have chosen a tourmaline benchtop and pale mint green cabinets for our new kitchen. I would like the walls in the kitchen, dining and living room to be a colour rather than an off white. We were going to have a feature wall on Resene Xanadu but have changed from a grey tiled floor to a green tiled floor. I guess it’s best described as a grassy colour with a hint of blue. We are having Resene Soothe in the hallway. I'm not keen on beige or brown. A. You might consider pulling Resene Soothe through to these areas or Resene Duck Egg Blue might work – such as Resene Periglacial Blue from the Karen Walker Paints range or Resene Duck Egg Blue (Resene Periglacial Blue is slightly more green) and there are lighter variants of both or try a pale green such as Resene Eau De Nil. These types of green/blues are quite neutral in a way and this means you can wrap a colour onto all the walls, rather than doing a feature wall – and keep the features to the hard surfaces. June 2023 |
Q. I have painted my lounge walls Resene Half Truffle and ceiling Resene Sea Fog. I find it’s very changeable in the different lights often looking quite purplish. I wonder if I went lighter or darker would either of those tone down the purple tone. A. Going deeper might help – you could try Resene Truffle or Resene Double Truffle if you are willing to go that deep. Lighter colours tend to reflect any adjacent colours, depending on the light. So if you are seeing a lot of red it’s likely this is reflecting other red elements in the room or the view from the room. Painting samples on to A2 card using Resene testpots is always recommended and attach to the walls - move around the room to see if any undertones are enhanced. June 2023 |
Q. I have chosen Resene Duck Egg Blue for the top half of my bathroom walls. The bottom half is wooden panelling which we want to paint white. We had Resene Black White in the past and are looking for something a little warmer and more inviting – but still fresh enough to give it that clean bathroom feel. I gave been looking at different strengths of Resene Bianca, Resene Alabaster and Resene Cararra. I also wondered if Resene Half Black White would soften the look? A. Resene Milk White pairs nicely with Resene Duck Egg Blue – It isn’t too white for the panelling. You might like to keep the overall appearance fresh by combining Resene Milk White with Resene Alabaster for the ceilings, skirtings and architraves. June 2023 |
Q. Our house has New Denim Blue COLORSTEEL® roofing. We need to paint some and replace some as it’s almost 30 years old. I want to maximise the solar reflection as New Denim Blue has a high solar gain and I want to minimise that for summer heat reduction and maximise cooling. I was thinking to retain the trimmings (fascia boards, spouting etc that line and define the shapes) as New Denim Blue but to paint the roofing iron itself a much lighter colour. What colour(s) would you suggest we consider for this? Gull Grey is one obvious coloursteel colour to consider that I anticipate would fit the existing scheme and reduce solar gains. Possibly something more light blue? A. If you are replacing part of roof with COLORSTEEL® then you will need to choose a standard colour from their range so it can be matched with paint for the older parts. If you are painting the whole roof then consider Resene CoolColour Grey Chateau – it is a blue/grey, but not too blue and will pair well with Iron and New Denim Blue. LRV 45%. June 2023 |
Q. We were going to paint the windows Resene Eighth Black White but we do not know what colour to paint the exterior sleepout walls. It is currently a mustard colour matching the gable ends of the main house. The house and sleepout roof are both COLORSTEEL® Ironsand. The bricks on the main house will always remain unpainted however we are open to possibly painting the gable ends of the house in the future to match the sleepout if you think that would be best. Secondly, at the back of the property there is a high green corrugate iron fence 3m high and 14m long. We were going to paint this Resene Crowshead. I wanted to check your thoughts on that? is the area too big to paint black, making the back area feel too dark and cold? A. I suggest you try Resene Masala for the sleep-out walls and eventually the gable ends – it will pair with the bricks and Ironsand. Alternately you might like to test Resene Fuscous Grey. Resene Crowshead is a timber stain – so not suitable for Iron. I suggest Resene Double Ironsand or Resene Bokara Grey for the fences – softer than a black and tones in with the bricks, potential sleep out/gable colours and Ironsand. Resene Double Ironsand June 2023 |
Q. I am painting my interiors in Resene Half White Pointer but am undecided what colour to do my skirting, architraves, doors to match. A. Resene Alabaster looks great with Resene Half White Pointer – for a fresh bright contrast, or if you prefer a more muted look consider Resene Half Black White. June 2023 |
Q. I just bought a townhouse and the walls are Resene Flotsam. It has a slight lilac undertone and I want to move to a neutral that has more of a grey or dirty white undertone rather than the purple. What sort of Resene colours would you recommend that would be similar to Resene Flotsam but with the changed undertone? A. See if any of these appeal: Resene House White, Resene White Pointer, Resene Rakaia or Resene Milk White. I suggest you paint A2 card with two coats of Resene testpots leaving a white edge on all sides of the card (to eliminate any influence from the Resene Flotsam walls) and attach to the walls to see what undertones are enhanced – move the card around to different spaces and view night and day. June 2023 |
Q. I am painting my hallway in a black white contrast using Resene Half Alabaster for the ceiling and halfway down the wall with black wallpaper. Can you suggest a high gloss colour that can be used for doors, trim and skirting boards? A. I suggest you keep the trims and skirtings Resene Half Alabaster – they can still be a gloss finish, and Resene Black White for the doors – a gloss finish – this will create a slight contrast for the doors. June 2023 |
Q. I am painting my house. I am using Resene Half Tea on the walls and Resene Mondo as a feature wall. I am not sure what should doors and skirting colour. The ceiling is Resene Double Alabaster. A. Have you considered Resene Double Alabaster for the doors and skirtings – this will be a different sheen level to the walls and ceilings – generally a semi-gloss – so that creates interest and contrast. Alternatively you could consider a slightly deeper tone to the walls such as Resene Tea. June 2023 |
Q. Would Resene High Tide work for a feature wall colour if the rest of the room is painted in Resene Half Tea? A. Yes blues pair well with Resene Half Tea and Resene High Tide is a deep charcoal blue. June 2023 |
Q. I'm getting the windows, fascia and soffits painted on this house shortly and then I will paint the brick later in the year. I was originally thinking a mid-dark grey for the brick with white windows, fascia and soffits but now I wonder if all white would look more modern? What whites would you suggest if I went all white? Or do you think the original mid-dark grey is better? If so, could you suggest a grey please. A. A warm dark grey such as Resene Fuscous Grey for the brick and a white such as Resene Half Wan White is my suggestion – the dark grey will modernise the overall look of the house. We always recommend you try testpots first – two coats – painted onto A2 card, and attach to the house – colours do tend to appear lighter in bright light. June 2023 |
Q. I am looking for a dark grey without blue or green hints. A. See if any of these appeal – Resene Charcoal, Resene Nocturnal, Resene Ship Grey, Resene Element, Resene Fuscous Grey or Resene Half Fuscous Grey. June 2023 |
Q. I have painted my walls Resene Black White, have a Resene Alabaster ceiling and am currently doing up my kitchen. Do you have any suggestions for colours for cabinets, benchtops, draw handles and flooring? I quite like the white cabinetry look however am worried this may be too much white for the room. A. Resene Black White is fairly neutral and will work with most other colours – but cool toned palettes are most suitable – so the blacks, greys, whites, blues and greens. An overall scheme really needs to start with a feature – will this be your benchtop or cabinetry – and first decisions are what materials you are going to choose – is the cabinetry a laminate or a paint finish for example, is the benchtop a stone, is the flooring a wood look laminate etc? The floors and benchtop are most likely going to be the biggest cost – and there are limited choices in a way – for good advice and to help narrow choices – I suggest you visit a flooring company who have trained staff and many options to help you – you will also be able to view larger samples and take them home – you need to be tactile with these materials. It helps draw you to certain looks and finishes. Visiting a kitchen specialist is a great idea to see benchtops and cabinetry colours together and the staff will assist with samples. Two toned cabinets are becoming popular – a smoky green or sage with white such as Resene Vantage Point or Resene Field Day and Resene Alabaster – might look great in your kitchen with a light wood laminate floor. Or try a mid-grey such as Resene Four Winds mixed with Resene Black White cabinetry – a white engineered stone benchtop will work with these combinations. Door hardware and tap wear needs to be considered when deciding on handle finishes – you might opt to have some cabinetry handle-less. June 2023 |
Q. We have a home with Ironsand roofing and garage door and Desert Sand joinery. Which two colours would you recommend to repaint the stucco first level and Linea weatherboards on the second storey? I really like the idea of swapping the dark/light scheme around and making the dxark a deep grey. A. I agree the stucco could look great in a dark grey – consider using a CoolColour paint to help reflect more heat. See if these combinations appeal: Base in Resene Armadillo with Linea in Resene Half Friar Greystone, or Resene Chalk Dust for Linea with Resene Solstice for the base. Resene Half Friar Greystone Resene Solstice June 2023 |
Q. I am looking for the most popular colour combinations interior and exterior for a successful house sale. This is a reno southern highlands cottage in NSW. We will have a walnut stain timber floor throughout and the veranda will be stained in a walnut stain two shades lighter. This house sits down on the lower side of the street. We want an upmarket Hamptons soft light fresh welcome home feel. A. A very popular colour combination for a Hamptons theme and to suit your home is Resene Nocturnal for the roofs with Resene Quarter Silver Chalice for the weatherboard and Resene Double Alabaster for the trims, windows and doors, including the finial. For the interior – soft whites, duck egg blues and soft grey greens will work – consider Resene Half Rice Cake for walls in main areas, with Resene Alabaster for ceilings, trims and doors. It is safe to include shades of Resene Duck Egg Blue perhaps for the living room, and a green such as Resene Half Emerge, for the master bedroom – consider a soft grey for the bathrooms such as Resene Quarter Rakaia. Homes are rarely one colour throughout – even to sell as long as the colours are not offensive and work together well – alternatively, it is how you dress the rooms – which the above colours I have mentioned are ideas to work towards, for soft furnishings, fabrics etc and of course lots of texture and white gives the Hamptons feel. June 2023 |
Q. We need to repaint our house and it’s ugly with a dark roof – green toned. A. Darker colours will modernise the house and perhaps not make the roof a feature – if you aren’t planning on painting the roof then perhaps with a green undertone so that the roof is incorporated into the colour – you will still have options for the roof down the track if necessary. Use white for the windows – this will also mean less maintenance as windows do get the full attention of the elements. Try Resene Armadillo, Resene Gravel, Resene Half Gravel or Resene Thunderstorm with Resene White Pointer for the windows – or you might like to go a little brighter – Resene Half White Pointer. I suggest you keep the soffits and bargeboards the same colour as your windows, so there is a break between the roof and new wall colour. The wall colours suggested are all similar but slightly different tones and depths. Colours do lighten and brighten outside. Resene Thunderstorm June 2023 |
Q. All our window surrounds, skirting boards and door frames are all wooden and polyurethane finish. We want to lighten and brighten our dining, lounge and kitchen – but can't work out what colours would suit with the wood as we don't want to paint those as harder/longer to do. What do you suggest? A. You are lucky these areas seem to have good light – which means you can balance the warmth of the wood with a white such as Resene Double Alabaster or for a bit more warmth Resene Quarter Rice Cake or Resene Half Rice Cake. June 2023 |
Q. We have new plasterboard in our bedroom on the walls, ceiling and skirtings. I’m thinking Resene Smoky Green for the walls with Resene Black White trims and Resene Half Black White for the ceiling. I read you have to go lighter for the ceiling? Do these colours work together? We want something soothing but fresh. Would I do the wardrobe door in full Resene Black White too or do I need to contrast with the trim/skirtings? If not Resene Smoky Green, then something similar to this. A. Resene Smoky Green is a great colour and yes Resene Black White would work well for the skirtings and trims. Wardrobe doors will pair well. It is advisable to do the ceiling lighter as due to how colours appear in shadow on ceilings – they can then appear darker. Resene Vantage Point is one of the latest greens and is slightly deeper than Resene Smoky Green or you might like to investigate a slightly more sage green such as Resene Spanish Green or Resene Field Day. Resene Field Day Resene Vantage Point June 2023 |
Q. I have a house with dark brown aluminium windows. I am planning to paint the house Resene Quarter Ironsand and then do the roof with Resene Ironsand. Do you think this will be too dark? I am struggling to find anything that goes with the joinery. The wood is not in great condition so I am hesitant to go too light as it will show up more imperfections. A. As far as appearances are concerned Resene Quarter Ironsand is not too dark at all – colours tend to lighten on an exterior up to 30%. I suggest you paint A2 card with two coats of testpots and attach to the walls – you will see how much lighter the colour appears. Consider using a Resene CoolColour paint to help reflect more heat. I suggest you test a few other colours as well as Resene Quarter Ironsand – with interesting depth and undertones – which might be enhanced in certain areas – such as Resene Masala, Resene Double Masala (these two have a slight green undertone) or Resene Bokara Grey – deeper again. Resene Bokara Grey has a warm undertone and complements Resene Ironsand. I suggest you keep the soffit and fascias off white such as Resene White Pointer – perhaps paint up a testpot of this colour too. June 2023 |
Q. We are going with Resene Half Bison Hide for most rooms with Resene Quarter Bison Hide in the passageway and maybe an accent wall in bedroom with Resene Bison Hide. At the Resene ColorShop they suggested Resene Alabaster or plain white for ceiling and maybe Resene Triple Alabaster for the trimmings because it will be semi-gloss. What do you suggest? I also need some advice for a colour for a south facing bedroom with white curtains and a grey headboard. What about a warm greige colour? The carpet will be a lighter colour. I have tried Resene Truffle but am not sure if I like it. A. I like the shop’s recommendations – Resene Alabaster looks lovely with the Resene Bison Hide family – however, the semi-gloss of the trims should create enough contrast, without having to use Resene Triple Alabaster – consider Resene Alabaster for the ceilings and trims – as you are using the lighter variants of Resene Bison Hide, plus it will keep the scheme light and fresh. For south facing bedrooms, warm mid toned colours work best – as pale tints will not make the room feel appealing because the natural light is cool and grey – try Resene Awaroa Bay. It has similar toning to full strength Resene Bison Hide – but is less green – with lots of white and the size of the room – it can take some depth – or try teaming it with Resene Eighth Bison Hide for the remaining walls and making the wall behind the bed a feature. Grey blues look lovely with Resene Bison Hide if you are looking for a feature wall in another room – consider Resene Triple Duck Egg Blue, Resene Powder Blue or Resene Clouded Blue. Resene Awaroa Bay June 2023 |
Q. What colour for trim would be good with Resene Arrowroot walls please? A. Resene Alabaster pairs well with Resene Arrowroot – or you might like to try the slightly cleaner and warmer Resene Half Bianca. June 2023 |
Q. Our house roof is Karaka with white fascia board. The guttering and downpipes are powder coated blue. We need advice re the best colour for timber weatherboards. A. As you have an earthy green and blue together – I suggest you keep the main colour neutral and consider a versatile white, which isn’t too stark such as Resene Sea Fog – which has a slight hint of grey, so will contrast against the fascia slightly (if the fascia is a true white ), you might also like to try Resene Double Sea Fog. Alternately you might like to try Resene Half Tapa or Resene Quarter Arrowtown. You haven’t mentioned the colour of your window joinery – so these colours will need to work with it – I suggest you paint A2 card with two coats of Resene testpots and attach to the cladding to see which colour you prefer. We don’t recommend painting directly onto the substrate as the existing colour might influence the way the new colour will appear in reality (once the entire weatherboards are painted). June 2023 |
Q. What colours would go with Resene Half Tea for an accent wall. One for the lounge and one for a bedroom please. The carpet is denim blue. A. I like the denim blues (carpet tones) working with other complex blues – I suggest you try Resene Blue Bayoux or Resene Seachange for your living room wall. If darker colours are your thing – you could look at a true denim blue such as Resene Half New Denim Blue or Resene New Denim Blue. For the bedroom – a softer colour with a green undertone might be nice – as there is less light – see if Resene Nebula or Resene Eau De Nil appeals. Resene Eau De Nil June 2023 |
Q. I would like a colour that is 2-3 tones darker that Resene Joanna that I can use for trims. A. For a colour 2-3 tones darker than Resene Joanna, try Resene Linen. June 2023 |
Q. We are looking at painting the exterior of our house. We are changing from Resene Tea and are thinking of something darker (we used and loved Resene CoolColour Cod Grey on a previous house). We like the smart, crisp sort of look and the foliage contrast against a darker colour. The roof is faded New Denim Blue long-run and the joinery is the standard colour Off White aluminium joinery (quite cream). We could paint the roof which I don't really see fitting into a more modern look. The current garage door and front door are cedar with oak colour and will need attention too. The decks are Kwila. We are open to alternative suggestions. A. Resene Bokara Grey is a lovely charcoal black, warmed with yellow and red and it sits well with foliage and off white joinery. I suggest you test this colour for the cladding and base. Team it with Resene Half Bianca for the timber windows, trims and soffit – to complement the off white aluminium joinery. Yes the roof will need to be addressed if you want to modernise your lovely home – investigate Resene Nocturnal for the roof – a neutral dark grey. I suggest the roof is fairly deep to balance the cladding – so the roof doesn’t become the feature. The garage door I suggest painting the same as the cladding – Resene Bokara Grey – with Resene Half Bianca for the garage timber framing – at present I feel the garage is drawing the eye as a feature – where the overall architecture and setting should be the feature. The front door for contrast I suggest Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain in Resene Warm Kwila – to tie in the deck and complement the path. I suggest Resene CoolColour paint – for the roof and cladding. Colours do tend to appear lighter outside and the undertones of Resene Bokara Grey will be enhanced. June 2023 |
Q. We are repainting our 60s weatherboard house. The roof and balustrade on the deck are Grey Friars and walls are Resene Half Napa which we will retain. The base, concrete deck and stairs are Resene Pravda but we would like to go a little darker. Is Resene Double Pravda suitable – or is it too brown? It has to look good with both walls and balustrade but we don't want anything that is very dark. What colour do you suggest for the base deck and stairs? A. Resene Double Pravda may be too brown and date the overall appearance. Check out Resene Double Stack – Resene Half Napa does appear slightly grey on weatherboards and can work with other greys as long as the undertone is right – Resene Double Stack will pair with Grey Friars well. June 2023 |
Q. The front of our 100 year old California Bungalow is to be rendered, with the dark wood fretwork and shingles to be replaced/repainted with the whitest white possible. For those all the remaining areas which are not dark wooden fretwork/shingles I would like a pale white which has an undertone that would provide a contrast with the newly painted white wooden fretwork/shingles but ties in harmoniously yet subtly with the sandstone block footing wall. I would like the undertone to be cool rather than warm – to reflect the white, blue, grey colours of the ocean/beachside local; however, understand that the sandstone has an inherently warm undertone. I would like the overall look to be timeless, subtle, cool, fresh, understated, modern – echoing the Hamptons aesthetic but not slavishly copying it. A. I suggest you test Resene Sea Fog or Resene Merino – although they are cool toned whites they have the ability to morph into warmer tones depending on what they are complemented with, – these whites will contrast with a true white – you might also like to try a slightly more grey undertone such as Resene Double Sea Fog or Resene Double Merino as the deeper variants (due to having less white) can appear warmer and be more of a contrast with the true white of the shingles etc. If you find they are too cool next to the warm sandstone then test something a bit warmer but not too cream such as Resene Chalk Dust or Resene Double Rice Cake. June 2023 |
Q. We are renovating an 1820s Californian bungalow in Auckland. We have chosen Resene Merino on the walls, which looks great, as it lightens the rooms. There's a feature fireplace in one room with a wooden surround, also painted in Resene Merino. However, we want to paint the bricks that surround the hearth a different colour to highlight them. Any thoughts on what would work well with Resene Merino? Something a bit darker would be good, without being too strong/strongly dark. The tiling at the front is going to be replaced (not chosen yet) and the floorboards will be sanded back to kauri. A. I suggest a warm smoky brown for your bricks – investigate Resene Kia Kaha, Resene Oilskin or Resene Domino. June 2023 |
Q. I’m aiming to go for a barely-there design trend (new minimalism) – what do you recommend? A. New minimalism – is being more intentional about the things you allow in your home – this doesn’t mean you have to have empty white walls and minimal decor – tonal colour schemes incorporating warm tones and textures will create a space that brings warmth and positive energy, and you can still add a pop of colour – try out a colourful wall or two to add flair to your minimalist decor or add a textured surface to a wall with Resene Sandtex. Organic shapes soften the hard edges of minimalism – decluttering your spaces by investing in statement pieces such as a striking piece of art, furniture or a graphic Resene wallpaper, such as a mural from the Resene Komar Range – rather than covering up walls, floors and furniture with clutter to make it more attractive. Displaying decor which we use every day – such as ceramic bowls, wooden boards, trays etc will give a homely feel but with purpose – so we are not creating visual clutter but decorating with intention. Plants are also a great way to visually soften a room, even a hanging plant in an empty corner. Muted colours do work well in minimalist schemes – layering colours will give warmth and be more inviting than your traditional minimalist schemes – Try Resene creams such as Resene Triple Rice Cake or Resene Meringue and layer with soft beiges like Resene Foundation or Resene Tua Tua and deeper salmon browns such as Resene Otter or Resene Domino, accent with espresso browns such as Resene Trek, Resene Dark Chocolate or a near black such as Resene Half Bokara Grey. Q. We are redecorating the whole house. We have a small hallway off the front door with very little natural light, with eight doors leading off it including the front door. We are after a clean brighter looking hallway. We have been advised on Resene Alabaster and Resene Half Black White. We want to paint the walls, skirting, architraves and doors but we are not sure what direction to go in. My husband thinks by having everything including the ceiling painted the one colour it might look too stark. A. I suggest Resene Half Alabaster for the ceilings (if being painted) and Resene Alabaster for the walls – it is slightly warmer – and full strength Resene Black White for the skirtings and doors, This combination works well together and will complement the lovely rich timber flooring – which gives the area warmth. You might also like to add some larger art pieces for the walls – to add more colour. June 2023 |
Q. I would like to know what colour I can apply to an axon panel, roof, windows and door. I have chosen white Madrid bricks. I would like to know what the best choice of colours I can apply to the Axon cladding, garage, doors and roof? A. I suggest Ebony for the roof, joinery and garage door – to give you that modern black and white look – but soften the Axon Panel with a warmer smoky grey such as Resene Half Fuscous Grey. June 2023 |
Q. We went with your colour advice of using Artemis on the exterior cladding of our beach house and absolutely love the new colour and it blends pretty well with the Matt Wizard joinery, as you suggested. We are now looking to repaint the aluminium Wizard joinery as it’s pretty weather beaten and was wondering if you would recommend a different colour that would also blend rather than make a feature. A. It is a big job to undertake the painting of Aluminium joinery, but can be very rewarding – and add value to your home. With that in mind, I suggest a neutral which complements the Resene Artemis, but will allow the cladding colour to be easily changed if necessary – a dark grey with blue undertones and a similar depth to Resene Artemis – being a similar depth and tone – hopefully will help to blend the dark grey into the walls. Try Resene Baltic Sea or Resene Half Baltic Sea. June 2023 |
Q. I’m thinking of painting all inside walls Resene Sea Fog. But what I can’t decide is what colour should the ceiling and doors be? Do you do it all Resene Sea Fog, or does it mix well with a white ceiling. Could doors be Resene Double Sea Fog or is it not worth the cutting in time? A. That really depends on the style of your house and design plus natural lighting of the rooms. For a contemporary home or mid-century, In living areas and hallways, it is quite nice to have the contrast of a lighter ceiling – especially if the ceilings are standard height – and the doors are a bit deeper. If there is a lot of glass for example or a fantastic view and not much wall space in a particular area, then all one colour makes sense and balances the openness. Traditional homes like villas have deep skirtings, solid doors and ornate ceilings which look great highlighted white – but it is a personal preference. It also depends on the confidence of the painter. i.e. if you are DIY and the ceilings are square stopped you will need to take extra care to get a good line and finish. Ceilings do appear in shadow so the colour can look darker – hence why traditionally they are whiter – if you don’t mind this fact, then one option would be to paint the ceilings and walls Resene Sea Fog and the doors Resene Double Sea Fog. Resene Sea Fog is a great colour and suits a variety of homes – the other option is to paint the ceiling and scotia (assuming there is a scotia) in Resene Half Sea Fog, the walls Resene Sea Fog and the doors Resene Double Sea Fog or Resene Triple Sea Fog. I suggest you paint A2 card with the suggested variants of Resene Sea Fog using Resene testpots and move around different substrates and rooms to see how you feel about the colour. June 2023 |
Q. We have a house with Resene Terrain and Resene Karaka for the detailing. We want a yellow door and would love some suggestions that would go nicely with the two existing paints. A. Resene Karaka and Resene Terrain go well together – and for the front door I suggest you try Resene Spotlight or Resene Bright Spark. June 2023 |
Q. We want to use Resene Half Shark in our bedroom. But it’s too dark for all four walls. What colour would be closest to an eighth or quarter strength? A. Try Resene Raven, Resene Half Raven or Resene Iron – these have similar tonings to Resene Shark. June 2023 |
Q. I'm painting a bathroom with Resene Carefree, but am unsure which white will work well for window, door, and trim. I'm after a clean white as the vanity and shower are a glossy white. A. Resene Alabaster pairs well with Resene Carefree and is a clean, fresh white. June 2023 |
Q. Our house is situated on a north facing site on a lifestyle block and needs a big revamp. We have a brand new roof being installed and the colour is COLORSTEEL® Ironsand. The house and doors (front, back, three French and garage doors), the wood frame windows and all trims need to change to work with the new roof colour. There is partial replacement of the old polystyrene and plaster cladding around the north facing walls with new wood planks but the other walls around the exterior remain as polystyrene and plaster. The house has a bulky look with some height and a roof that comes down encompassing part of the second storey. That was all about hunkering down into an exposed high wind area house site. Arriving down a steep driveway two faces of the house can be seen. The west facing face has the back end of it and round to the south west face as Polystyrene and plaster cladding. (The front door and garage door are on that south west face.) The front part of the west face will be the new wood and it continues round the house on the north and east faces. The house is on a flat site filled with lawns and garden and at the outer edges a mix of trees mostly native (a good number of red Ake Ake, Karo, red Matipo etc) but some pine trees as well. I’d really like help with choosing exterior colours thinking about the two different cladding types, the wood frame windows and all doors and trims. A. I suggest you keep the two cladding colours the same – for cohesion, and not too pale – there needs to be a little bit of depth – otherwise you will emphasise the heaviness of the roof. Due to the elements and aspect of the walls – I also suggest a slightly warmer tone – although this does not mean you have to use a colour from the warm side of the spectrum – but a warmer undertone will work well – and also pair with Ironsand and the landscape. For the timber windows, doors and trims a complementary off white will keep the scheme fresh. We always recommend testing colours first, before making final decisions, and please check any LRV (light restriction value) restrictions with your builder for new claddings. Investigate Resene CoolColour paints for any darker colours – CoolColour paints help to reflect more of the sun’s harmful rays. Try Resene Quarter Stonewall with Resene Half Sea Fog for the windows, doors and trims, or Resene Double Ash with Resene Half Villa White for the windows, doors and trims, or Resene Foggy Grey with Resene Wan White for the windows, doors and trims or Resene Awaroa Bay with Resene Half Sea Fog for the windows, doors and trims. Resene Awaroa Bay June 2023 |
Q. I want to paint a bedroom white – and want to keep the doors and sills in Resene Bianca – what is a white that would go with this and keep it feeling warm? A. Often complex whites will appear warmer or cooler depending on the light – but try these whites which will pair with Resene Bianca – Resene Half Bianca or Resene Quarter Bianca or Resene Alabaster. We always recommend testing colours before making a final decision. June 2023 |
Q. I am looking for a new colour for the concrete foundation and concrete window sills to suit my 1960s Summerhill stone home. The aluminium joinery is brown/bronze in colour and the roof is Grey Friars. I also have a black concrete ledge running up my driveway that I want the new colour to tie in with. I am hoping some sort of grey will look good with it. I also have a horribly painted yellow and brown garage. I am wanting to paint this something more modern and neutral to tie in with the colour I paint on the house. A. As you have three colour existing – the joinery, roof and stone – and as the sills and foundation are closest to the joinery – I suggest painting these to blend with the aluminium joinery – try Resene Ironsand. We always recommend testing colours before making final decisions. June 2023 |
Q. Could you please recommend a colour (possibly from the Resene White Pointer range) to match the vinyl floor in light grey and toilet partitions in Melteca Spinifex? A. Resene Quarter White Pointer is pale enough to work well with both colours. June 2023 |
Q. I am after guidance for my new kitchen cabinets. The walls are Resene Robin Egg Blue. The ceiling is Resene Quarter Rice Cake. Floors are original rimu. There are black granite benchtops and a black rangehood. We don't want stark white cabinets. We also don't want brightly coloured cabinets. Something warm, neutral and welcoming for our 1930s deco house in Napier. A. Resene Half Thorndon Cream, Thorndon Cream or Karen Walker Buttery White might look nice – I suggest you paint A2 card with two coats of Resene testpots and see how the colours appear in the space next to Resene Robin Egg Blue. June 2023 |
Q. We are currently redecorating and have Resene Alabaster as a trim and likely plan to use Resene Sea Fog on walls. Previously we had Resene Alabaster with Resene Double Sea Fog but would like to lighten it up a bit. The Resene Double Sea Fog previously worked well in the back living area which had less light, but made the front lounge (north facing) look cold. What would you suggest for the front lounge? Possibly we may consider a feature wall there also. A. I am surprised the north facing lounge looked cold – as generally north facing rooms get plenty of sunlight and can take colours from the cooler spectrum. Resene Double Sea Fog may have suited the back living area as it is less white so to speak – even though it is a cool toned colour. Perhaps for the north facing front room – a brighter white is what is required to emit light around the room – Resene Sea Fog or even Resene Half Sea Fog might work well in this room. I suggest you paint A2 card with two coats of Resene testpots and attach to the walls to see how they appear with the natural light. June 2023 |
Q. I need your help in recommending a CoolColour accent colour for exterior windowsills. I have an art deco stucco house that is painted in Resene X-200 Buff. The windows have just been replaced with uPVC and the window frames and sills have been painted in Resene Half Barely There to match the new uPVC windows. However, I now need to choose an accent colour for the front edge of the windowsill that works with Resene Half Barely There, the Resene Buff coloured walls and will work with a new Dominator sectioned garage door, that I have yet to choose the colour for but is most likely to be a dark blackish colour. A. I suggest Resene Bokara Grey for the face of the sills – it is a deep warm charcoal, but not black – and it has undertones of red and yellow, so will sit well with Resene Buff. Then for the Dominator garage door, perhaps look at a black which is deeper than Resene Bokara Grey but tones well – such as Windsor Grey. June 2023 |
Q. I need to pick a colour to paint our house interior. We have wooden matte polished floors in the kitchen and dining area, which is open plan to the lounge with new dark specked carpet. We are looking at Resene Half Iron. Is this going to make things too dark? The ceiling and architraves are Resene Double Alabaster and the kitchen cabinets are Bayleaf Melteca. The house does get a lot of day sun. A. I don’t feel Resene Half Iron is the right tone to pair with the lovely green cabinetry and timber floors – a more complex neutral like Resene Merino will work and pairs with Double Alabaster – assuming the carpet is a neutral dark grey. We always recommend painting A2 card with two coats of a Resene testpot before making final decisions. June 2023 |
Q. I am needing colour suggestions for my daughter’s room, it’s a small room, she is 9 years old and wants a purple and teal room! A. I feel that the walls need to be either an aqua or lilac and then bring in accents of both in deeper variants throughout the room – whether that is bedding and soft furnishings or even a paint effect for a wall – investigate the Resene habitat plus booklet ‘special effects create with paint’. These colours are cool toned so lots of texture will help and white! Perhaps look at the Resene curtain collection online for white curtains. Colours to try for the lilac are Resene Fog or the warmer Mozart, for the aqua and pale teal – Resene Half Opal or Morning Haze. June 2023 |
Q. Our house is painted Resene Desert Sand. I want to paint the soffit (currently a soft grey/blue, which I do not like). Do you do a Resene Half Desert Sand or Resene Quarter Desert Sand or do you have a soft complementary colour. The joinery is Grey Friars. So second question: Do Resene do a Resene Double Grey Friars – I want to paint gable ends but am keen to have a darker (more charcoal) tone than the joinery. A. Investigate Resene Tua Tua for the soffit (equivalent to Resene Half Desert Sand) and Resene Invincible (equivalent to Resene Triple Grey Friars). Both will look great with Resene Desert Sand and Resene Grey Friars – colours do lighten outside in bright, natural light. We always recommend you test colours before making final decisions. June 2023 |
Q. We have a very basic Keith Hay home. The home has bronze aluminium joinery. The front faces east and the back faces west, we are five metres from the Waikato River and have a large deck. We are looking for advice on colours to work with the joinery. A. I suggest a darker palette to give substance to the house and offset the lovely landscape. See if any of these work for you – and we always recommend testing colours before making final decisions – Resene Bokara Grey, Resene Masala, Resene Gravel, Resene Taupe Grey, Resene Double Friar Greystone or Resene Castle Rock. From there we can look at trims etc – so investigate your main body colour first – note that colours do appear lighter outside in natural light. It will also depend on your roof colour to which colour tones best. Resene Double Friar Greystone June 2023 |
Q. I have Resene Quarter Joanna on my bathroom walls. I was going to use Resene Half Joanna on trim and take through the rest of house for doors and trim when wallpapering but I think it is looking a bit on green side in different lights. I had wanted a soft beige look in bathroom but it hasn’t quite worked out that way with Resene Quarter Joanna. I do prefer a warmer look than cold. What else could I pair with Resene Quarter Joanna besides half that I could take through the whole house and is warmer rather than cooler? The wallpaper I am looking at is out of the habitat book. Hallway, family room and office looking at number 47442 and bedrooms off that 47441, 47431, 47439. I still have couple of other rooms to sort for wallpaper but that’s where I’m up to. A. Looking at the wallpapers you have chosen and Resene Quarter Joanna for your bathroom, I feel the trims throughout should be a bit more neutral, but warm and soft, without being too stark. Resene Half Rice Cake seems to sit nicely with the wallpapers and Resene Quarter Joanna. The trims are generally a Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss finish, so this adds another dimension. We always recommend testing colours before making final decisions. June 2023 |
Q. We are planning to use either Resene Grey Olive or Resene Half Grey Olive for weatherboards to match a Karaka roof with matching Resene Alabaster white for soffits, barge boards, window trims and sills. Metal downpipes and guttering are powdered painted blue/grey. We are not sure whether to go with Resene Grey Olive or Resene Half Grey Olive. A. I prefer Resene Half Grey Olive – it is a bit more grey (less yellow) than full strength, so therefore is a bit more neutral to pair with the roof and metal. Please note that colours do tend to lighten outside in natural light. We always recommend testing colours before making final decisions. June 2023 |
Q. We are renovating a 965 red brick house. To modernise the front entrance, I think Resene Dauntless for the new front door and Resene Blue Bark for the porch walls would contrast well with the red brick. A. Deep blues and muted teals look great with red brick – I feel you have done a great job. Both those are fabulous colours and will work together to give life to the exterior – as always we recommend testing colours before making final decisions, June 2023 |
Q. I'm doing a dark master bedroom. My walk in wardrobe is walnut. and the ensuite will be dark and timber when I can afford to finish it, so dark in the bedroom makes sense. My totara four poster bed will be the star. It is a south room with no direct sun, so I figure to embrace the dark cosy look but I'm struggling with colour. My velvet curtains I’m making are close to Resene Triple Blanc and Resene Triple Bison Hide. The floor is wooden with a beige rug under the bed. The room was originally Resene Bokara Grey, but I’m tossing up whether Resene Ironsand is warmer and Resene Half Bokara Grey was more grey than browny. There will be plenty of timber, so browny is key for warmth also, especially in a south room. I was thinking Resene Triple Blanc for trim top and bottom and ceiling purely because I'm struggling to make a decision and matching drapes would look good I think. A. I like your ideas and Resene Triple Blanc for the curtains, ceilings and trims will pair very well with the smoky brown walls. Try Resene Ironsand and Resene Double Ironsand. Resene Half Bokara Grey is actually more brown than grey, so it might be worth a try as well. June 2023 |
Q. My new kitchen has Resene Double Sea Fog walls. We are going to paint a Resene Enamacryl strip around the kitchen bench for ease of cleaning and are leaning towards either Resene Half Truffle or Resene Quarter Cougar as these bring out the browns in our stone bench. My question is, we need to order a splash back and wish to colour match/colour complement with a blue, blue/grey, duck egg style. What would you recommend? A. See if any of these colours appeal: Resene Destiny, Resene Conch, Resene Sorrento or Resene Double Duck Egg Blue. Colours do appear a little softer with glass – and depending on what type of glass the colours can appear different to a paint swatch – therefore, I suggest you ask the splashback supplier to provide samples of any of the colours which work best for you. Resene Double Duck Egg Blue June 2023 |
Q. I am looking to paint the exterior of our villa. We have recently painted our roof and garage door in Resene Grey Friars. We are now looking to paint the rest. We were thinking a grey colour (looking at Resene Stack) but I am not sure what is a trending and lasting colour for villas right now. Do you have some suggestions? It sounds like grey is out? A. I am not seeing a change in exteriors as much as interiors – where warmer greys and beige are trending – however, definitely softer, cleaner colours are being specified for villas/weatherboards – softer blue greys included, however Resene Stack does pair well with Resene Grey Friars so I suggest you test this colour. You might also like to try Resene Ted, Resene Half Silver Chalice, Resene Half Tapa, Resene Kensington Grey, Resene Concrete or Resene Triple Black White. Resene Double Alabaster is a good trim colour with these options. Resene Ted June 2023 |
Q. We have a round living room with a flat slanted ceiling – an elliptical shape. It’s generally a light space – lots of windows. I am considering painting the ceiling flat black. The reason is that sunlight slanting through the windows shows up every imperfection in the plasterboard ceiling. I have seen something like this done before and rather than ‘close’ the room in it seemed to have the opposite effect. It would certainly be dramatic. What are your thoughts on this? The walls are currently a beige colour but thinking of changing them to something like Resene Concrete. A. A black ceiling won’t necessarily close the space in, but it can have the effect of lowering the ceiling. Any light directed onto the ceiling will be absorbed – and this can have an effect of a darker room. Consider using a dark grey/charcoal with Resene Concrete walls – this might look really smart and help with hiding defects. If you want to go black you can always paint a coat over the top – but going a lighter tone over black, requires more effort. I suggest you paint A2 card with two coats of testpots and attach as close to the ceiling as possible to see how the colour appears. See if any of these work for you: Resene Westminster, Resene Black Sand (near black), Resene Nocturnal or Resene Foundry. June 2023 |
Q. We are planning to paint our house and we need colour advice. The window frame is Ghost Grey. Currently, we are thinking to paint the bottom wall part of the house (by the garage) with Resene Quarter Grey Chateau, and paint the top part of the house (weatherboard) with Resene Half Iron, then outside soffit with Resene Quarter Grey Chateau, and the panel around the window frame outside with Ghost Grey or Resene Half Iron. Does this colour combination sound okay? An alternative colour is Resene Half Grey Chateau for the bottom wall of the house and Resene Half Iron for the weatherboards. We are not sure which colour is better for the bottom part of the house. We are worried that the Resene Half Grey Chateau may be too dark. We are also not sure if the panel around the window frame should be painted with either Ghost Grey (the same colour as the frame) or with Resene Half Iron (same colour as the weatherboard) or with Resene Quarter Iron (slightly lighter than the Resene Half Iron) or even Resene Poured Milk (but we think this could be too white). A. I suggest you look at the Resene Surrender family. The Resene Grey Chateau and Resene Iron variants are blue toned and might be the wrong undertone next to Ghost Grey. Resene Surrender is a little warmer and a bit less blue. For the upper level if you choose the lightest variant Resene Quarter Surrender – then you can take it up under the eaves and onto the fascia. The window surrounds I suggest also painting Resene Quarter Surrender – you can always ask the painter to do one window and see how you feel. For the base I suggest Resene Surrender – colours do lighten outside in bright, natural light so none of these colours are too light, and this will create enough contrast between top and bottom. We always recommend testing the colours first before final selection. June 2023 |
Q. We want to repaint exterior walls, but not trim. The trim is Resene Hot Chile. I feel I need a warm creamy/white colour to tone with trim and with brick paving. What are your thoughts? What are the yellowest whites in your neutral range? A. Please note that whites generally lighten and brighten outside up to 30% from what you see online or on a swatch – so we tend to suggest the deeper variants for the exterior. When testing colours please do not paint directly onto the existing substrate, as the present colour might make the new warm whites look more yellow, than they might appear in true reality (once the whole house is repainted). See if any of these colours appeal – Resene Meringue, Resene Villa White or Resene Wheatfield – these neutrals are not the whitest but will all appear brighter outside, and I feel you need contrast with the joinery. June 2023 |
Q. I am just looking for a two colours for kitchen cabinetry. I want to do an off white (white with a green or beige undertone for the main cabinetry, I don't want anything that may read yellow, the room has good sun and light levels), and then I am looking for a darker, nearly black with a slight blue undertone, paint or stain for the island and island cabinetry (which will be constructed from wood). This will contrast with the Carrara marble I am using which will have dark grey/blueish veining). A. See if either of these dark blue/blacks appeal – Resene Invincible or Resene Double Foundry. For the contrast try Resene Stepping Stone, Resene Half Cloud, Resene Quarter Truffle or Resene Half White Pointer. Colours do appear lighter or darker depending on shadowing and light – we always recommend testing colours before making final decisions – testpots are available from Resene ColorShops or you can buy them online.
