The vision for this kitchen was to be a place that was warm, welcoming, functional and with character; a kitchen that allowed space for all of the family to move about. Located in a bungalow it also needed to be in keeping with the character of the bungalow but with a fresh feel.
With the client’s love of grey, the colour was decided at an early stage. Resene Quarter Castle Rock is a lovely soft grey colour that works well with the choice of other materials used within the kitchen. The white handmade subway tiles, the white butler sink, the Caesarstone® Frosty Carrina countertop, the pewter handles, the Macrocarpa wooden shelves in the scullery (stained dark) with the metal beaten handmade supports work well with the feel of the kitchen, the black ties in well with the lights in the scullery and the window and doors latches/handles which are also in black.
The kitchen cupboards are a flat pack specifically designed for this kitchen space. The floorboards came from an old gymnasium in Rotorua that we also used in the bathroom renovation. They were slightly narrower than the existing floorboards but were tied in well by placing a board at a right angle to the other boards.
The walls are Resene Quarter Rice Cake, a neutral warm colour that complements the soft grey of the Resene Quarter Castle Rock. The lights above the island are revamped and hand painted in a Resene Castle Rock on the outside and lighter Resene Quarter Rice Cake on the inside.
