Epsom Normal Primary School

Auckland

Conceptually, the idea was to create a forest of trees through which the sun would glimmer, changing with every minute of the day.

Stephenson & Turner (S&T) was engaged by Greenstone Group to design a replacement administration building for the Ministry of Education (MOE) at Epsom Normal Primary School (ENPS).

Classroom - 1

The building was to be rebuilt on the same footprint and overall shape as the existing building. Typical administration areas, alongside a sick bay and the principal’s office were placed downstairs for easy access. The upstairs area was solely dedicated to a big open-plan staffroom and kitchen, overlooking Mt Eden and adjacent trees below.

The school has a number of large trees on site which acted as the main inspiration for the design.

Classroom - 2

Conceptually, the idea was to create a forest of trees through which the sun would glimmer, changing with every minute of the day. A ‘tree house’ was then created in order to bring tranquillity and rejuvenation to teachers when on their break.

Nature has a calming effect on people; S&T recreated this effect by making use of cedar screens which form part of the building structure at certain intervals. The screen is formed by differently sized battens and at different intervals in order to create a truly organic look and feel.

The existing trees on site acted as inspiration for the colours chosen on this project. A variety of green and brown Resene stains, Resene Waterborne Woodsman Earthsong, Resene Evergreen and Resene Bushtrack, were used on the cedar posts to create the ‘forest’ mentioned above.

These colours are offset by Resene Half Grey Olive and Resene Evolution, fitting in with the main colour of the existing school. Green 3M film was selected to create the same effect on windows. When the sun falls on these green strips, it forms a shadow of the carpet tiles, giving a true forest feel to the interior.

The interior is finished in off white neutral tones with Resene Joanna on walls in Resene Zylone Sheen and Resene Half Linen on internal doors, architraves and skirtings.
