Hamilton Junior High School Technology refurbishment

Hamilton

The new design strives to reinforce and encourage modern learning and provide a functional and inspirational environment for the school’s teachers and pupils.

Hamilton Junior High School

Hamilton Junior High School commissioned MOAA architects to refurbish their 1970s stand alone technology block. The existing technology block was very tired and poorly laid out for modern learning. The architecture had to increase the natural day light, ventilation and define the new learning environment. The interiors then had to reinforce the architecture and function in a more playful manner. The new design strives to reinforce and encourage modern learning and provide a functional and inspirational environment for the school’s teachers and pupils.

MOAA architects’ design removed all of the interiors so the services and building envelope could be upgraded to provide a warm, light filled and healthy learning environment. The spaces were then reformed to encourage creative and flexible learning. Transparency and circulation were made more permeable between spaces and the interiors articulated to the function.

Colour was used to affirm wayfinding, define spaces and stimulate the pupils.

The colour scheme is in line with the MOAA belief that colours affect your learning experience. The new way modern learning environments are being designed, and in particular this refurbishment project, provides opportunities to use materials and colour to define and activate space.

MOAA and the school selected Resene Grey Chateau, Resene Smitten, Resene Belladonna, Resene Double Sea Fog, Resene Broom and Resene Black Haze. These colours gave a palette that allowed them to increase the vibrancy of the space depending on its function. i.e. corridor, active learning space, high focus space, art room and wood working room. Cohesion with the other materials and finishes selection was paramount to not affect the functioning of the space. Resene had the best selection of colours for this application.
