Special effects aren't limited to movies - they can also be applied to your home's interior. With the right paint finish, for example, it's easy to create a look that is out of the ordinary. Resene says the latest paint trends reflect a mix of influences, ranging from technology to nature. Retro looks are also combined with contemporary styling, providing balance to home interiors. Marketing manager Karen Warman calls it a fusion of complex colour opposites.

"Edgy fashion is teaching us to be brave in our colour choices, to develop seemingly incongruous schemes through the use of dramatically different colours," she says.

Nature continues to be an inspiration for colour direction, with the focus moving to green-blues, which also reflect a retro influence, Warman says.

"Colour has become multi-dimensional with the increasing prevalence of pearl-escents, metallics and texture. The combination of finish and colour creates paints with a deep sheen, that reflect the strong connection between fashion and technology," she says.

Warman also points to a strong move toward monochromatic layering of colour and finish.

"Whether layering metallics or paint effects over a standard decorative paint or a textured basecoat, consumers want to create individual, yet subtle looks."

The new Resene Metallics, Kaleidoscope and Pearl Shimmer paint ranges reflect the trend towards finishes that have depth.

"Pearlescent and transparent finishes allow colour to radiate from within. This sense of translucency is increasingly popular," she says.

The Resene Metallic chart features 45 shimmering metallic paint effects, including silver, gold, steel and aluminium. These can be applied to form a seamless metallic veneer on any type of building material, including MDF, customwood, steel and concrete. Resene's Kaleidoscope range, manufactured by the Resene Automotive and Performance Coatings Division, incorporates colour shift pigments. This means that a wall appears to change colour as the light changes, or as you walk along beside it.

Resene Pearl Shimmer, the newest product in the company's special effects range, builds on the popularity of Resene Metallics. Warman says this acrylic pearlescent glaze can be used to create soft, iridescent wall finishes, suitable for both interiors and exteriors. "The most accentuated pearlescent effect will be achieved in combination with a textured basecoat, a well-planned lighting scheme or a curved surface," she says. "Just one coat will achieve a softly shimmering effect."
