How to create a marble paint effect

Create with paint! Projects from habitat by Resene

DIY: Faux marble candle holders

How to marble a candle stick

A marble finish always looks elegant whichever form it takes, from kitchen islands to smaller ornaments such as candle holders. Painting your own marbled effect has become a hot trend of late, and the good news is that it’s so easy to create.

You will need: Wooden candle holders, Resene testpot in Resene Bianca, Resene Lusta-Glo in Resene Steam Roller, plastic tub, paint brushes.

Step by step instructions

Step 1
Step one
Paint the candlesticks with a basecoat of Resene Bianca.
Step 2
Step two
Taking the plastic tub, fill with water high enough to dip the candlesticks in.
Step 3
Step three
Dip the paint brush into Resene Steam Roller and then touch it to the surface of the water in the tub. Because Resene Lusta-Glo is oil-based, the paint will disperse in the water.
Step 4
Step four
Gently dip the candlesticks onto the surface of the water, and then into the water. Turn them slowly until they’re completely covered in the marble-like effect.
Step 5
Step five
Bring out of the water and place onto a towel or cardboard to dry overnight.
Step 6
Step six
Fill with candles and decorate your dinner table, mantelpiece or windowsill with these elegant candle holders.

Always ensure lit candles are under adult supervision. Always extinguish all candles before going to sleep. Replace candles when they are at least 20mm from the top edge of the candleholder.
