Modern updatePrior to repainting, the Hutchinson family home was painted in a very traditional white with red trim and brown roof. Wanting to keep the paintwork as traditional as possible, while allowing for a modern update, they picked Resene Licorice for the roof and skirting trim, a clean Resene Alabaster white for the eaves, barge boards and windows and Resene Blue Night to provide a strong contrast in the gables, highlighting the wooden framed windows. Resene Blue Night was also used to create a strong bright finish on the front door, transforming the old varnished door, and all other outside doors, including the garage roller door. Julie chose Resene Orinoco for the walls, hoping for a green grey leaning toward cream, but once on the wall (and "yes I have been advised many times since about the importance of test pots" says Julie), I realised that the colour had a little too much yellow for the house to sustain resulting in that dreaded phone call to the painter, Clive Noble, to ask can we change the colour after the walls are painted? Clive got this easily remedied with a Resene ‘Orinoco special’ where the tone was tinted to give a muddier hue, creating the green grey that she had envisaged. The concrete porch behind the house had large cracks through the surface, so they used Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path tinted to Resene Haast Shale to provide a consistent finish in a colour that complemented the rest of the paintwork. The new colour scheme is in keeping with the style of the house with a fresh modern edge through the use of the blue contrasts.
