Home with history

The Chetwynd family lives in a Tuakau homestead steeped in history. The house was built in 1867 and was the original general store and post office for the area and even pre dates the Tuakau township.

Over the years the property has been re-wired and plumbed but the interior decorating was dated by at least two decades. The lounge was a yellow colour that had been ‘sponged on’ and the room that became their son’s bedroom was pale orange and green wallpaper with dainty white daisies – not quite right for a nearly four year old boy!

They prioritized the lounge first as this was a common area. Both fans of colour, they opted for a feature wall of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Pohutukawa around the formal fireplace offset by neutral Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Sisal on the surrounding walls. New Austrian blinds in the tall bay windows completed the look.

The next job was their son's room – the wallpaper was stripped, the walls levelled and sanded. They chose a bright, colourful and fun spaceman and planets theme to brighten the room along with a colour palette of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Wet n Wild on two walls, Resene Enamacryl Metallic tinted to Resene Go Go Go on the remaining two walls, Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Pearl Lusta for the walls above the spaceman frieze and Resene Enamacryl gloss white for the ceiling, window frames and skirting boards. All that was needed to finish the room were Spaceman drapes found at Freedom.

While it was hard work, the Chetwynd family actually quite enjoyed doing the renovating. Next job is the main bedroom…
