Handmade nurseryThe McIntyre family moved into their home when Joe was six months old. The first thing on their long list of things to do was their son’s nursery. It was bright yellow with an old blind and very tired. They sanded, primed and painted the walls Resene Eighth Bison Hide. They put up a picture rail to match the wood already on the ceiling. They painted the rail, the wall above the rail, the wooden windowsills and the ceiling Resene Alabaster. They bought wooden letters from Spotlight and painted them Resene Red Berry. The cupboard, drawers and wall-hung bookcase were all purchased from Trade-me and painted in Resene Alabaster. Janine painted an elephant and bird on a canvas in hues of Resene Foggy Grey and Resene Blue Lagoon and the stripes around the outside in Resene Red Berry so Joe would have something to look at from his cot. She made a bunting out of a Resene colour fan that hangs over a photo of Joe with his great grandmother. To complement the Resene colours she knitted a patchwork blanket, sewed a birdhouse and had a lightshade made out of a tablerunner from Freedom. Jeanswest gave them the Bambino cars poster once the promotion had finished. The aim was for a neutral look, not themed, something that Joe wouldn’t grow out of in a couple of years. The room is still a work in progress with a small wall due to be painted in Resene Blackboard Paint and a painted height chart to complete the look. The room was designed on a very tight budget with colours they love and a delightful sense of calm.
Thanks to the McIntyre family of Lower Hutt.
