Molly's placeThis home is a heritage listed cottage in the heart of Wellington's inner city near Cuba Street. Its next door neighbours are a plumbing supply shop on one side and a car repair workshop on the other. The current owners wanted to make a statement about the astonishing survival of this much loved 1878 cottage (once one of a row) and its ongoing use. It is one of a very few colonial homes in Te Aro that still stand on their original sites. The cottage has had some sympathetic alteration but from the street presents its totally original façade. The owner of the cottage for many years was an elderly lady called Molly and it was due to her refusal to move out for developers that the cottage survived. Hence today it is affectionately known as Molly's Cottage. It is a perfectly intact residence, complete with a walled garden in which edible plants are cultivated. A pink and red colour scheme was chosen to celebrate the cottage's joyous and courageous spirit with Resene Floyd on weatherboards, Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream and Resene Pohutukawa on window trims and Resene Bastille on doors.
