A
few years back Sarah bought some seconds tiles from the maker
in Khandallah to put in her kitchen, but unfortunately a house
move came before she had a chance to install them. While the kitchen
in the new home was tidy, it was still tired and very original
- with wallpaper and carpet over three layers of lino. With one
toddler and another baby on the way, the carpet had to go. They
found lovely Matai floor underneath, the start of the motivation
for the new kitchen.
Tiles in hand, they found some unpainted customwood cabinets
at No Names Building Recyclers and teamed them with Resene Verdun
Green for the walls and cabinets, then completed their purchases
with some smaller mustard and plenty of white tiles to cover all
the desired tiled areas.
Thumbing through back issues of Your Home & Garden magazines,
the decision was made to go with a plywood benchtop and open shelves
that Craig's father whipped up thanks to the skills learned in
his trade as a boat joiner.
The new look kitchen is darker in colour but still a very warm
and friendly space, just as they wanted.
One wall still has the chimney taking up space due for removal
soon either to open up into the lounge or to be replaced through
a rearrangement of the fridge and cabinetry.
