Downsize

Enlarged by a previous owner, the bedroom was left with a low beam across its width. Wallpaper and scrim had been removed leaving bare sarking walls. Julia and Mark's son had decorated the walls with posters and had lived in the room like this for several years.

Wanting to reduce the size of the room, a builder was contracted to construct a dog-leg wall in order to optimise the size of both the bedroom and the room next door and make the best of an awkwardly positioned door and window. The beam was also raised up into the ceiling; the result being aesthetically pleasing and giving the room a more spacious feel. Once this work was complete, the ceiling battens, scotias and skirting boards needed to be reconstructed.

Stripping the Rimu architraves and skirting boards, removing nasty blue carpet to expose the matai floorboards and replacing fixtures with brass (window sash lifts and catches, curtain rods, light switches and power outlets) ensured the room complemented the period feel of the villa. Painting the walls with Resene Enamacryl Metallic - the subtle Resene Bedrock for three walls, Resene Time Warp as the feature wall and Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Half Spanish White - enabled their son to fulfil his wish of having a metallic blue room and Julia and Mark's desire to keep the room in harmony with the rest of the house. For an added touch of uniqueness, the blue wall incorporates a paint effect creating interest when the light shines on the metallic paint.
