Wild thing

The renovation of three-year-old Taea's room, from a rundown and dirty smoky cream room with orange carpet, was a family project involving everyone from grandparents to children.

The first part of the project was to select the wall colour. Resene Spindle was considered perfect for the job, a lovely calming blue to relax a very active boy and a colour that would take him through to his older years. Combined with Taea's bright toys, the room can now be vibrant or calm.

Dad Michael sanded the floors and polished them. An offcut of carpet was overlocked and added to the finished flooring as a mat.

The room feature, which combines both sculpting and painting techniques, was created by Taea's grandmother and draws on the themes from Taea's favourite book 'Where the Wild Things Are'. The room colours are carefully incorporated into the feature so that it harmonises perfectly with the room.

Old drawers were repainted with Resene Sandwisp and the bookshelf with Resene Astronaut. The desk/table was handmade by Taea's grandfather, and, not to be outdone, Dad Michael sewed the duvet then dressed it with a keepsake from his childhood of a blanket passed onto him by his grandmother.
