Small package
On a tiny urban site measuring just 268 square metres, the Hawksworth family have created a three storeyed, three bedroom contemporary styled family home complete with studio. The ground floor contains the studio along with the entry, double garage and laundry. The open plan living areas occupy the whole of the first floor level with wide bi-fold doors opening onto a larger north-facing deck. Lastly, the top floor contains the bedrooms and two bathrooms. A small deck extending from the master suite floats among the branches of the existing mature trees on the eastern side of the house.

Joining these three levels is a full height glazed void rising from the entry to the top-level landing. Alongside the void is the stairwell, its height accentuated by the use of vertical COLORSTEEL® wall cladding.

When choosing colours for the house the site provided some strong colour inspiration in the form of mature trees and copious volume of volcanic rock. The Hawkworths selected Ironsand for the longrun cladding, plastered garage and the timber trim and Resene Masala for the remainder of the fibre-cement cladding. These two colours were accentuated by silver anodised aluminium joinery and the Resene Silver Chalice used on the front door and entry canopy reflecting the raw metal elsewhere.

The brief for the interior colour scheme was to be a simple gallery backdrop for artwork so after numerous testpots of 'whites' the warm neutral tone of Resene Merino was chosen. To create flow between the exterior and interior, Resene Masala was brought inside and used on doors, shelving and accents.
