Three years of dreamsAfter three years of dreaming about it, the Johnston family embarked on an 11 month 'additions' project on their 100+ year old villa. With the help of their architect and a meticulous builder, they added an ensuite, walk-in wardrobe and study off a bedroom at the back of their house, along with a separate garage, carport and 'cottage'. It was important that the additions were done in keeping with the old style of the house, while at the same time add a bit of them to the home. Up until this point, all they had touched was the garden! It probably took the best part of six months to choose the colours they would use for the interiors. They had visions of what they wanted, but with hundreds of shades to choose from, there were lots of testpots purchased to narrow down the options to the perfect few 'French grey' tones - bright and quirky just wouldn't suit their furnishings or colours in the existing parts of the house, which are mostly taupe and very pale cream. They quickly realised just how different one grey can be from another. In the end, they used Resene Eighth Tapa in their study and robe, Resene Eighth Stack in their ensuite, Resene Half Bianca on the tongue and groove, Resene Quarter Stack on the French tub and Resene Eighth Ash in the adjoining existing bedroom (was previously cream). They painted the cabinetry, ceilings, trims and skirtings etc in Resene Bianca and Resene Half Bianca in the ensuite. For the interior of the cottage, they wanted to keep it crisp, but cosy. With the help of the Resene ColorShop staff they decided on their suggestion of Resene Buttery White, for the main room. Resene Double Sea Fog was used on the tongue and groove walls and cast iron bath with Resene Bianca on the upper walls, shutters and ceiling. The exterior was easy - they used the same colour scheme they had painted on their previous house. They liked it so much and didn't get long enough to grow tired of it before moving on, so decided it would be perfect for this house. The weatherboards are Resene Silver Chalice and the windows, doors, posts and fretwork are Resene Alabaster. They did make a few changes though. This time round the sills are painted Resene Cod Grey, the new roof is COLORSTEEEL® Slate and Resene Half Silver Chalice has been used on the bay window where Resene Alabaster was used previously to help it stand out.
