Habitat plus - taking shelter

The most popular innovation in recent years to extend the use of our outdoor living spaces is the increasing range of electronic louvred pergolas.

These clever structures can be opened wide to let light in, or adjusted to manipulate the angle of the sun’s rays, or closed completely in the middle of the hottest day, or when the rain clouds gather. They can be added to new builds or retrofitted into existing dwellings. This one is by Vergola NZ.

Four colour panel
Cool sand toned outside living space
1.Resene Parchment is a classically cool shade; a light beige-neutral, reminiscent of sand and stone so is particularly perfect for sea-side settings. Like many Resene colours it can be used in various strengths for different or complementary effects, and it appears here as full strength Resene Parchment on the wall, returning as a gentle contrast in Resene Quarter Parchment on the pergola itself.
Cool grey toned pergola
2.Cool and effortlessly chic, Resene Mid Grey provides a brooding canopy for this deck and is perfect for a more urban setting. Similarly crisp, Resene Triple Concrete is an inspired choice for the plastered walls. This industrial urban grey with its silvered edge is pleasingly timeless. On the tall terracotta pots the pristine almost-luminous, ice water tone of Resene Saltpan adds easy sophistication.
Neutral greys and greens pergola
3.A soft and neutral grey, close to white and strangely ethereal, Resene Titania is powerful in its utter simplicity. No matter what colour the sky may be, its glowing presence adds soul to any outdoor scheme and it’s used to great effect here on the louvred pergola. On the plastered wall, Resene Ravine, a cool, cloudy green provides a punchy contrast, while Resene Middle Earth darkens the pots.
Cool colours with a hint of red pergola
4.A time-honoured favourite, the stony magnificence of Resene Grey Friars offers an air of solidity to the louvred roof in this elegant scheme. Sleek and sexy Resene Cougar from the Resene The Range Whites & Neutrals, contributes a feline feeling – taupe, edged with pink – to the plastered walls. The native Christmas tree is one of our most celebrated natural features and in its paint form, Resene Pohutukawa, is not only a tribute, but an ideal tool for adding authentic, meaningful colour. It’s used to dramatic effect on the terracotta pots on this deck.
