Side table

Transform a drab wooden side table into a high gloss treasure with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 51

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, mineral turps for washing brushes, old wooden side table, paintbrushes, Resene Qristal Clear polyurethane, Resene Danska Teak Oil, Resene Super Gloss tinted to Resene Code Red, or use Resene Enamacryl for a waterborne enamel finish, Resene Wood Primer, sandpaper.

To get the look: Mark painted the background tongue and groove with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Soft Mint.

Other ideas: For a striking black effect use Resene Super Gloss tinted to Resene All Black.

Remove the old plastic covering from the table top.
Step 2

Sand the entire table, ensuring any old varnish is completely removed.
Step 3

Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 4

Apply one coat of Resene Wood Primer to all parts of the table excluding the top. Allow to dry.
Step 5

Apply one coat of Resene Super Gloss tinted to Resene Code Red to all parts of the table excluding the top. Allow to dry.

Step six
Apply a second coat of Resene Super Gloss tinted to Resene Code Red and allow to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Danska Teak Oil to the table top and allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Qristal Clear polyurethane to the table top ensuring each coat is dry before applying the next.
