Drawer shelves

Transform an old kitchen drawer into a funky shelf unit with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 48

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, filler, large clamps (x2), old kitchen drawer, paintbrush, piece of 50mm x 50mm timber cut to fit the width of the drawer, putty knife or similar, PVA glue, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Wellywood, Resene Quick Dry, sandpaper, screw driver.

To get the look: Mark painted the background tongue and groove panel with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Turbo.

Other ideas: For a shiny red effect, paint the drawer with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Havoc.

Remove the handle from the drawer.
Step 2

Remove any lining from inside the drawer.
Step 3

Lightly sand the piece of 50mm x 50mm timber and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 4

Fit the piece of 50mm x 50mm timber across the back of the drawer to fill the gap and fix with PVA glue. Clamp the wood into position until the glue has dried. (This may not be necessary if your drawer doesn’t have a gap at the back).

Fill any holes and gaps and allow the filler to dry.

Sand the entire drawer (especially the filled areas) and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the drawer and allow two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Paint the drawer with two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Wellywood, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
