2002 Grand Winner

From the Resene/Your Home and Garden Colour Home Awards Competition - 2002 Grand Winner

Julia and Wayne Keightley are our Resene Colour Home of the Year winners, for their bold use of Resene's palette in rich blues and golds. Their bedroom won the monthly prize in June; now they've claimed top honours and will receive $2500 worth of furniture from Harvey Norman. Be inspired by the confident colour choices in their Feilding home.

Julia and Wayne chose a few strong colours for each room, to complement the timber and antiques already in their home. "We're pretty much blue people," says Julia Keightley, "but every time we'd finish a room and go to start on the next one, we'd find ourselves saying 'We can't paint this room blue as well!'" So out would come the Resene fan decks, and a few minutes later the Keightley's would have their new alternative.

From the scrapbook of magazine clippings they've put together during renovations to their 1921 bungalow, it's clear they both appreciate strong colours that complement their love of timber and antiques. They also prefer a limited colour palette in each room.

The choice of Resene Black Rock against their bed and Resene Sisal in the rest of their bedroom, with a twist of orange in the furnishing accessories, has created a sophisticated and restful ambiance. In the bathroom, they chose Resene Wedgewood as a complement to the timber vanity that Wayne built from rimu timber found in his garage.

In the bedroom where their daughter Madison (13 months) sleeps, they kept the original cream colour above the yellow (Resene Kournikova) wall and painted the dado rails on each wall different colours. The corner cupboard, also built by Wayne, was painted in Resene Resolution Blue, Resene Tango (orange), Resene La Palma (green) and Resene Koumikova (yellow). Julia stencilled Madison's name on to the wall, and also used the cut-outs as templates to paint letters in fabric paint on the Roman blind.

But Julia and Wayne aren't resting on their laurels - they say they'd like to do it all again soon, either by building a new home or starting another renovation.
