Once cute and quaint, this bright, bold bathroom has won Jenny and Martin Caughley of Eastbourne, Wellington, $500 worth of Resene paint vouchers as this month’s deserving Resene Colour Home Award winner.

Passionate about the colour red, Martin and Jenny decided to “go all out” with rich colour, choosing Resene ‘Shiraz’ for the walls and refurbished clawfoot bath of their family bathroom. Their first renovation task, though, was to install the skylight that brightened this room in their 20s bach-style house immensely.

When the lights are dimmed, the bathroom takes on a moody, romantic ambience that is far removed from the stereotypical excitement that red can evoke in small rooms. Martin is also pleased with the silky effect of Resene ‘Rice Cake’, used in the trims and ceiling. “It’s an off-white colour that doesn’t look dingy,” he says. For that element of surprise, the couple chose Resene ‘Conifer’ for their custom-made tongue-and-groove-look cabinetry, while blue vinyl flooring and accent towels complete the look.
