Emilie Truscott

Emilie Truscott has always had a passion for art. She deviated from making art for a few years while she got her BA in Psychology and her Diploma in Applied Social Services: Counselling, and now these subjects heavily influence her work. She focuses on mixed media work: acrylic paint with paper collage overlay. Emillie gets her inspiration from human behaviour and relationships, her qualifications and learning more theory about people, and visually speaking; the many images that surround us each day whether it be from magazines, television, the internet, posters, packaging, etc.

Emilie is a full time artist. She creates her work out of her studio in Dunedin where she constructs surreal collages based on the principles of beauty, truth and freedom. Her work is rooted in counselling theory; social construction, positioning theory, and empowerment theory. Through her work Emilie aims to highlight and challenge societal norms and discourse that may otherwise be invisible to us; questioning our perceived realities and inviting us to see new possibilities. Emilie's collage work is vibrant and full of life and colour. Surreal scenes grow out of everyday familiar objects and figures that have been reorganised to create something new.

Emillie uses Resene acrylic paints in a wide range of colours as the backgrounds to her collages because it is good quality and a good consistency.

Her work has been recognised for two awards:
Midlands Photography Award (U.K), 2004
Curators Award, Art Week Otago University, 2011.
