Art with a pulse - Miller Studios
Signwriters from South Island-based shopfitting company Miller Studios and the Resene palette and products have combined in the name of art to execute one of the country’s largest contemporary wall paintings.

Designed by Christchurch artist Darryn George (Ngapuhi), the stunning work called PULSE covers over 300 square metres of the William Sutton Gallery in the Christchurch Art Gallery and is over 50m long. George was approached to do the work by the gallery’s senior curator Justin Paton and worked with the Miller’s team headed by Shane Stiffe and Greg Barnes to complete the work over about three weeks. After spending four weeks designing the work on his computer, George could often be found aboard the cherry picker with the Millers crew giving advice and inspiration.

Employing a range of primary Resene colours, George has produced a towering work which keeps the eye moving from one area to another, giving a pulsing effect. Christchurch art reviewer Robyn Pickens says: ‘’George’s composition of primarily vertical forms on the two flanking walls and visual manipulations of the word ‘waru’, meaning eight, aid this journey as forms intersect, butt up against each other, rotate and find new forms to interact with.’’ Miller Studios director Mark Tyrrell said the project was a wonderful experience and a real opportunity for the Miller’s skilled team of signwriters to display their more traditional skills.
