Get set to sift

Mark Rayner's nifty double sieve can do two jobs...

You will need:

How to use: Use the larger frame on its own for separating bigger stones from soil. Fit the smaller frame inside and use both together for sifting finer soil to make a good seed bed for seed sown straight into the garden.

Top tip: Only sift small amounts of soil at a time and never try to sift wet soil as this will clog up the mesh.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Cut the timber to the dimensions listed above.

Step 2 Step two
Using PVA glue and galvanised nails, attach the four longer lengths of timber together to create a square frame, checking its shape with a set square. Repeat with the shorter lengths of timber.

Step 3 Step three
(a) Measure and cut a square of wire mesh to fit the larger frame and attach with galvanised staples, as shown.  (b) Turn the outer frame upside down and place the smaller frame inside it.

Step 4 Step four
Mark the lines of mesh around the inner edge with a pencil, as shown – make sure the lines of mesh on the smaller frame are halfway between each pencil mark. Remove inner frame. Repeat step 3(a).

Step 5 Step five
Measure and cut six small triangles of wood and attach to the base of the larger frame with PVA glue and nails. Measure and cut a 20mm reinforcing strip, and attach in the same way across the base.

Step 6 Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat to all wooden parts of each frame. Allow to dry for two hours.

Step 7 Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Alabaster to the larger frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step 8 Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Nero to the smaller frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
