Pretty in pink

Mark Rayner shows how to get the best from pelargoniums and other scrambling plants with this planter and support.

You will need: A small wooden planter 20mm x 20mm, garden stakes cut to the following dimensions three at 600mm and ten at 230mm, saw, sandpaper, hammer, 30mm zinc plated panel pins, or galvanised nails, exterior PVA glue, paintbrush and potting mix.

An ivy-leafed and a regal pelargonium, 'Dresdner Samolit' and 'Frulingszauber'. Resene Quick Dry acrylic primer undercoat and Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Cabaret and Resene Geronimo.

Here's another idea: Use this planter also for dwarf peas or sweetpeas. Blue-flowered Convolvulus sabatius, or a miniature climbing rose and lobelia.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Measure and cut the garden stakes to the dimensions listed above.
Step 2 Step two
Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 3 Step three
Nail and glue five of the shorter lengths of wood to two of the longer lengths, as shown, spacing them approximately 75mm apart.
Step 4 Step four
Attach the other lengths of wood in the same way to make a right-angled support, as shown.
Step 5 Step five
Nail and glue the support to the wooden planter, as shown.
Step 6 Step six
Apply one coat of Quick Dry primer to the planter and wooden support. Allow to dry for one hour.
Step 7 Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Cabaret to the wooden support and sides and legs of the planter, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8 Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Geronimo to the planter’s top rim, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Fill with potting mix. Plant the ivy-leafed pelargonium against the support and the regal one in front.
