High standards

Mark Rayner builds a raised bed and renovates a tired, old deck.

You will need:

To get the look: Mark stained the wicker chair with Resene Waterborne Woodsman in Resene Cherrywood and finished off with Resene Aquaclear gloss.

As seen in kiwigardener

How to build a raised bed:

Step 1 Step one
Cut the 100mm x 75mm fence posts into six 1m lengths to form the corner and central supports of the raised bed.

Step 2 Step two
Using the circular saw and set square, cut the tongue and groove landscaping timber to the lengths listed above. Dig three holes, 500mm deep and 1.2m apart, along the fence line and another three holes 800mm out from these.

Step 3 Step three
Form the back of the raised bed by nailing three longer lengths of landscaping timber into two corner and one central support. Stand the back of the raised bed upright, sinking the supports into the holes and secure with rapid set concrete. Repeat with the shorter lengths of timber to form the side wall, as shown.

Step 4 Step four
Form the second side wall as described in step three. Fix the front of the raised bed to the central support and drop into position, nailing to the front corner supports, as shown. Ensure the walls are level and square and fix the central support into position with rapid set concrete.

How to wash and re-stain a deck:

Step 5 Step five
Prepare the deck for staining by mixing one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water and apply to the deck with a garden sprayer. Leave for 48 hours then wash off with clean water.

Step 6 Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Woodsman in Resene Oiled Cedar to the raised bed, wiping off any excess with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Step 7 Step seven
Using a large brush, apply one coat of Resene Woodsman in Resene Oiled Cedar to the deck, following the direction of the grooves.

Step 8 Step eight
Wipe off any excess stain with a clean, lint-free cloth. Leave both the deck and raised bed to dry for 24 hours before applying a second coat.
