Paving the way

Tired old pavers can be spruced up with the help of some stencils and a splash of paint.

You will need: Pavers, 2 different sizes and colours, coloured gravel or pebbles, stencils, masking tape, paint brush, Blu-Tack, scrubbing brush, plants and soil.

Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Burnt Crimson and Resene SRG Grit.

Note: When laying pavers, add a level of base course (50- 75mm for patios and pathways), compact to a tight surface, then add a layer of sand and level before putting down the pavers.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Clear the area to be used of any debris. Add base course and sand if necessary (see note). The area we used had previously been levelled.
Step 2 Step two
Make sure the pavers to be stencilled are free from dirt and dust. Wash with soap and water and leave to dry.
Step 3 Step three
Place stencils in position and secure with masking tape. Use Blu-Tack to ensure there are no gaps between stencil and paver, or bleeding may occur.
Step 4 Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Lumbersider in Resene Burnt Crimson, or colour of your choice. Leave to dry.
Step 5 Step five
Before proceeding, add Resene SRG Grit to the paint. As painted surfaces can be slippery when wet, SRG Grit will prevent this. Apply two more coats of paint.
Step 6 Step six
Once dry, lay the pavers on levelled ground, leaving gaps for your plants. Fill the gaps with soil or a sandy mix if using succulents.
Step 7 Step seven
Place coloured gravel or pebbles around the pavers and level. Pieces of slate, bark or shells are also very effective.
Step 8 Step eight
Plant a selection of succulents or other perennials for effect.
