Potted colour

Inspired by the sweeping coastal view from Fort Takapuna Historic Reserve in Auckland, Mark Rayner paints up a storm with this festive-looking pot.

You will need:

To get the look: Mark used the plant Cordyline 'Red Star'.

Step 1 Step one
Coat the inside of the pot with the Resene Terracotta Sealer. Paint the outside with one coat of Resene Quickdry Primer/ Undercoat.
Step 2Step two
Paint two coats each ofResene Malibu for the sky and Resene Rob Roy for the sand.
Step 3 Step three
Use a soft pencil to mark the outline first, then paint two coats each of Resene Dingley for the grass and Resene Waikawa Grey for Rangitoto Island.
Step 4 Step four
Paint two coats of Resene Tory Blue for the sea. Use a tape measure and masking tape to ensure a level horizon.
Step 5 Step five
Paint an outline of the trunk, roots and branches of the tree with Resene Nero.
Step 6Step six
Fill in the detail on the trunk and branches of the tree with with Resene Sambuca. Fill in the foliage with Resene Black Forest.
Step 7 Step seven
Using a large brush, dab on splotches of Resene Pohutukawa to create the flowers.
Step 8 Step eight
Add a few waves with Resene White. Allow to dry overnight, then finish with two coats of Resene Concrete Clear, applying it out of direct sunlight and allowing at least two hours between coats.
