Make a spring splash

Mark Rayner shows how to create a colourful painted planter - just right for potted colour

You will need: Terracotta planter, Resene Aquapel waterborne water repellent, Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Parachute. Resene test pots in the following colours: Resene Balloon, Resene Fizz, Resene Hi Jinx, Resene Rocket.
Old towel, paintbrushes, mineral turps, good quality potting mix and red cineraria.

To get the look:Mark painted the background wall in Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Sandal.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Seal the inside and base of the terracotta pot with one coat of Resene Aquapel.
Step 2 Step two
Once dry, apply one coat of Resene Sureseal to the planter's inner rim, top edge and sides. Leave to dry for two hours. Clean brush in mineral turps.
Step 3 Step three
Apply two coats of Resene Parachute to the inner rim, top edge and sides of the planter, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 4 Step four
Lay the planter on an old towel to protect the fresh paint and dribble Resene Rocket over one side, as shown, using an artist's brush.
Step 5 Step five
Use this same dribble technique to apply Resene Balloon - there's no need to wait for the previous colour to dry.
Step 6 Step six
Repeat step five using Resene Hi Jinx.
Step 7 Step seven
Repeat step five using Resene Fizz. Allow the paint to thoroughly dry (preferably overnight).
Step 8 Step eight
Plant up with a red cineraria for a real burst of spring colour.
