Colour with glass

Mark Rayner shows how to create this eye-catching stained glass panel.

You will need: Old wooden-framed window, pink, amber, green and clear frosted glass (ours came from recycled windows), marker pen, clear silicone (exterior), black grout, bucket, sponge, clean cloths and old towels. Rubber gloves, gloss cleaner, exterior filler, paintbrush and sandpaper, hammer, tile nippers and methylated spirits. Resene Quick Dry and a Resene testpot of Resene Butterfly Creek.

Top tip: For protection from sharp glass edges wear thick rubber gloves when you are grouting.

To hang the panel: We suspended the panel using galvanised chain, 3mm split links and 40mm eye screws.

Step 1 Step one
Fill any holes in the frame with exterior filler and, once it's dry, lightly sand the frame to remove any peeling paint.
Step 2 Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the window frame and leave to dry for two hours. When it's dry, clean both sides of the window with glass cleaner and cloth.
Step 3 Step three
Draw a simple flower design on the reverse of the window with a marker pen. Working one colour at a time, place coloured glass panes between old towels and break into pieces with the hammer.
Step 4 Step four
Turn the window over and working a small area at a time, apply a generous amount of silicon to the glass. Then apply pieces of coloured glass to build up the pattern, as shown, using the tile nippers, if necessary, to shape individual pieces.
Step 5 Step five
Continue applying glass this way until the pattern is complete. Once the silicon is dry, turn the window over and clean off the marker-pen design with a cloth and methylated spirits.
Step 6 Step six
Mix grout according to manufacturer's recommendations and, wearing a rubber glove, apply the grout to the stained glass window, working into the gaps. Wipe off excess grout with a damp sponge and allow to dry.
Step 7 Step seven
Remove grout residue with a clean cloth, as shown.
Step 8 Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Butterfly Creek to the window frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
