Personalised plate

Make a feature of your house number with Mark Rayner's step-by-step instructions.

You will need: Resene Testpots of Resene Half Pearl Lusta, Resene Bright Red, Resene Nero, Resene Super Duper, large round terracotta plant saucer, paintbrushes (including medium and fine artists' brushes), construction glue, plastic or coated-metal house number, small piece of galvanised wire, Resene Terracotta Sealer, Resene Smooth Surface Sealer. Resene Space Cadet and Resene Trinidad, Resene Clearcoat UVS, acrylic UV protective glaze, Selleys multi-purpose Knead-IT®, sandpaper, latex gloves and a pencil.

All our construction materials come from Mitre 10 Mega and all paint products and brushes from Resene ColorShop.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Mix two small balls of Knead-IT®, following label instructions. Press them down on the inside of the terracotta saucer, as shown. Bend the piece of wire and firmly embed it into the Knead-IT® pieces to form a hanging device. Allow the Knead-IT® to cure.
Step 2 Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Terracotta Sealer to the inside and outside of the saucer and allow to dry.
Step 3 Step three
Draw a butterfly shape on the outside of the saucer and then fill in the butterfly shape using flattened balls of Knead-IT®. Work on the butterfly in sections (one wing at a time) as the Knead-IT® will firm up pretty quickly.
Step 4 Step four
Glue the house number onto the saucer with construction glue. Once the glue has dried, lightly sand the house number and butterfly shape and apply one coat of Resene Smooth Surface Sealer, to both. Allow this to dry.
Step 5 Step five
Paint the background with two coats of Resene Super Duper and the rim of the saucer with two coats of Resene Space Cadet, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6 Step six
Paint the wings of the butterfly with two coats of Resene Trinidad. Paint the number with two coats of Resene Bright Red allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7 Step seven
Paint the main markings on the wings with two coats of Resene Nero. Give it two hours to dry. Then paint the outer light markings with Resene Half Pearl Lusta.
Step 8 Step eight
When the Resene Half Pearl Lusta is dry, apply one coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS, to the finished house plaque. Give this two hours to dry before hanging your handiwork.
