Vege planter

Make this attractive vegetable planter and paint with Resene colours.

You will need: Twelve 1.8m treated fence palings, ten 500mm lengths of 70mm x 19mm treated timber, we used picket fencing, approximately five metres of 50mm x 25mm treated timber, exterior construction glue, exterior PVA glue, 50mm and 75mm jolt head galvanised nails, drill with 40mm hole saw attachment, hammer, paint, brushes, pencil, coarse sandpaper or wood file, saw, tape measure, polythene sheeting and galvanised staples.

Note: The polythene lining ls optional - especially if you're only growing leafy or fruiting veg, or using the planter for flowers. If you're growing root crops. however, the polythene will provide a layer of protection between your crops and the treated timber and will also keep the potting mix from coming in contact with the timber, prolonging the life of your planter.

Step 1 Step one
Measure and mark six lengths of fence paling at 530mm and three lengths at 480mm. Use the back of the handsaw, as shown to ensure pencil guide lines are at forty five degrees.
Step 2 Step two
Cut the pieces of fence paling and smooth any rough edges with coarse sandpaper or a wood file.
Step 3 Step three
Lay three full fence paling on a flat surface and attach the three 480mm lengths across, as shown, fixing with 50mm nails and construction glue.
Step 4 Step four
Attach two more of the full fence palings along the front and back edges, as shown, and two of the 530mm lengths at either end. Fix firmly with 75mm nails and construction glue.
Step 5 Step five
Make two more rectangular sections from the remaining full and cut lengths of fence palings. Again, fix well at each corner with 75mm nails and construction glue.
Step 6 Step six
Assembling upside down, as shown, stack the rectangular sections and base section on top of one another. Run a line of construction glue between each section as you assemble the planter. Cut six small feet from the remaining pieces of fence paling and attach to the base with construction glue and 50mm nails.
Step 7 Step seven
Using PVA glue and 50mm nails, fix eight of the 500mm lengths of 70mm x 19mm timber together at right angles to form the corner supports and feet.
Step 8 Step eight
Attach one of these to each corner of the planter, fixing with construction glue and 50mm nails. In the same way, attach the two remaining pieces of 70mm x 19mm timber to the centre of the front and back panels of the planter.
Step 9 Step nine
Turn the planter the right way up and measure, mark and cut the 50mm x 25mm timber to form an edge around the top of the planter, fixing with the PVA glue and 50mm nails. Drill 40mm drainage holes in the bottom of the planter approximately 150mm apart.
Step 10 Step ten
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the entire planter and allow two hours to dry.
Step 11 Step eleven
Paint the outside panels of the planter with two coats of Resene Anakiwa, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 12 Step twelve
Paint the inside, top edging and vertical supports/legs of the planter with two coats of Resene Curious Blue, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Line the planter with polythene sheeting, fixing at the top edge with galvanised staples. Cut some drainage holes In the polythene at the base of the planter and fill with good quality potting mix (not garden soil).
