Meals on wheels

Mark Rayner shows to make a moveable veggie planter from an old sack barrow and treated fence palings.

You will need:

*Note: The measurements are approximate - always measure and double check before cutting.

To get the look: Position your moveable planter on a sunny deck or patio, fill with good quality potting mix and some of your favourite seasonal veggies and flowers.

Step 1 Step one
Cut rough sawn fence palings to the dimensions as listed above.
Step 2 Step two
Attach three of the 200mm lengths of rough sawn fence palings together, using three of the 465mm lengths as cross supports (as shown). Fix with 50mm galvanised nails and PVA or construction glue.
Step 3 Step three
Make the sides (as shown) using two 1200mm lengths and two 600mm lengths of rough sawn paling, with four 310mm lengths and the two 155mm lengths of dressed paling. Ensure the ends overlap by approx 25mm, fix with nails and glue.
Step 4 Step four
Attach the trolley to the underside of the planter, fixing the upright handles to the base with four galvanised 'half round' pipe brackets and 30mm screws.
Step 5 Step five
Turn upside down and fix the base into position using nails and glue, as shown.
Step 6 Step six
Turn planter right way up. Attach two legs at the front, as shown - check their length as it will depend on the back wheel's size. Attach the last length of paling as a horizontal brace across the planter's front. Leave overnight for glue to dry.
Step 7 Step seven
Attach the remaining four lengths of rough sawn paling to each of the sides - to create a 'two tiered' box as shown. Fix together with nails and glue.
Step 8 Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Earthsong to the planter, allowing 24hrs for each coat to dry.
