MDF table

Turn a plain MDF table into a stylish piece of furniture using this easy faux wood grain technique.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 72

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, MDF table, Paintbrushes, Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Colorwood testpots of Resene Cherrywood, Resene Japanese Maple and Resene Western Red Cedar, Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpot of Resene All Black, Sandpaper

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Soft Mint.

Other ideas: For a darker brown use a combination of Resene Dark Oak and Resene Deep Oak over a basecoat of Resene Walnut.

Step 1
Step one
Sand the MDF table and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 2
Step two
Apply a basecoat of Resene Japanese Maple to the table top brushing in one direction, as shown. Allow to dry.
Step 3
Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the base and support leg of the table and allow two hours to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Brushing in the same direction as the basecoat, apply alternate strokes of Resene Cherrywood and Resene Western Red Cedar, creating a wood grain pattern with the brushstrokes. Allow to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Paint the base and support leg of the table with one coat of Resene All Black and allow two hours to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Paint the base and support leg of the table with a second coat of Resene All Black and allow two hours to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear gloss to the table top allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear gloss to the base and support leg of the table, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
