Blackboard toy box

Turn an old lidded box into a fabulous blackboard toy box – perfect for keeping things tidy after play time.

Resene Toys and Games with Mark Rayner - Project 10

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, Old lidded box (ours was previously painted MDF), Paintbrush, Paint roller and tray, Paint stirrer, Resene Blackboard Paint Pink, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Shocking, Resene Quick Dry, Sandpaper, Wood filler and knife for filling

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Gin Fizz.

Other ideas: Create a cool blue effect by using a combination of Resene Blackboard Paint Blue and Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Picton Blue.

Step 1
Step one
Fill any screw heads with wood filler and allow to dry.
Step 2
Step two
Sand any filled areas. Lightly sand the entire box to ‘key’ the previously painted surface.
Step 3

Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the inside and outside of the box and allow two hours to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Carefully stir the Resene Blackboard Paint.
Step 6
Step six
Using the paint tray and roller, apply two coats of Resene Blackboard Paint to the top of the box, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Shocking to the inside and outside of the box and allow two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply a second coat of Resene Shocking to the inside and outside of the box. Again, allow two hours to dry.
