Table tennis table

Perfect for the games room, this regulation size table tennis table is great for all ages from kids to teens.

Resene Toys and Games with Mark Rayner - Project 01

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: 19mm MDF cut to the following dimensions: 1525mm x 1220mm (x2), 1525mm x 150mm (x2). 25mm x 50mm timber cut to the following lengths: 1475mm (x2), 1300mm (x4). 40mm jolt head nails, Clamps, Clean cloths, Filler, Hammer, Low-tack masking tape, Nail punch, Paintbrushes, Paint tray and roller, Pencil, Putty knife or similar for filling, PVA glue, Resene Quick Dry, Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Alabaster, Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Kaitoke Green, Sandpaper, Saw, Saw horses and two 2.5m lengths of timber to raise table top to a height of 760mm, Tape measure

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Half Tea.

Other ideas: For a darker effect paint the table top with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene All Black.

Step 1

Measure, mark and cut timber and MDF to the sizes listed above. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Using PVA glue, fix the smaller sections of MDF to the larger sections to form both halves of the table top. Clamp at either end and wipe off any excess glue with a clean cloth. Allow to dry overnight.

Using PVA glue and nails, fix the lengths of 25mm x 50mm timber to the underside of the table top, positioning each length approximately 25mm in from each edge. Punch in nail heads using a nail punch.

Use filler to fill in the nail heads and, if necessary, where each of the two pieces of MDF are joined. Once dry, sand smooth with sandpaper. Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the top, sides and underneath of the table top and allow two hours to dry.

Apply two coats of Resene Kaitoke Green to the top, sides and underneath of the table top and allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Mask off a 20mm line around the outside edge of the table top and apply two coats of Resene Alabaster, removing the masking tape before the second coat has dried. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Mask off a 3mm line down the centre and apply two coats of Resene Alabaster, removing the masking tape before the second coat has dried. Allow two hours to dry before setting the two halves of the table top on two lengths of timber across two saw horses.
