Colour: Resene Hopbush
Lulu
Researching my Resene colour “Hopbush”, I discovered that it is a plant that many culture’s use as a medical herb for many different illnesses, traditionally and frequently is still in practise. In East Africa, Women believe that bathing in the leaves of the plant will help bring everlasting strength, female power and fertility- something that I believe show how valued a women should be.
I instantly connected this with Anahera story, where see shows her characteristics of determination, innovation and power to be independent. I wanted to focus on the similarities that Anahera and East African Women share, and to design a garment that reflects traditional culture and modern day female power.
Using the “sash and bow” waistband idea portrays a style of classic wedding dresses - with the big feature bow at the back. This makes the style very feminine. I wanted to also include gathers and the wrapping effect as it reminds me of the classic African traditional style of wrapping head scarfs and material to cover the body. I have made the silhouette of these garments show of the main points of a Women's body- Waist, back, chest, to focus on the parts of a women that many cultures believe are sacred and powerful.
