Colour: Resene Paradise
The inspiration behind my creation was the famous work of the brilliant late Maya Angelou ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ (1969). Where she uses poetry to sum up her journey from her childhood through to adulthood, she allures you with simplicity in her words of great grief, found beauty and the in-betweens.
When I received the colour Resene Paradise I automatically thought of my idea of paradise. My initial idea of paradise was the perfect storm. I thought waterproof anoraks, structured garments and a cage. I was so set on the idea of an anorak cage to show strength in no full protection over the soul, as if the soul wanted to embrace the storm through the openings of the cage. Along the way I felt confined, so set on one idea but as I kept seeking new ideas and I found that the light was near. What I craved on my creative journey was freedom from worry so this era I came across felt like it was anointing. It was the mantra of Coco Chanel’s legacy that couldn’t say it any better. “Always take away, always pare down. Never add… There is no beauty without the freedom of the body.”
As I stand here in awe of the presence of each day
I can’t help but embrace the perfect storm coming my way
Set free from confinement, I can finally see my feet
Although the puddles have run above them
I know that at the ground my feet will meet
Uncaged with great guidance, found way above the skies
These storms are just distractions from what lies beneath the eye
Its beauty, its pain: it’s a dance in the rain
With the freedom to fail, I’ve longed for this trail
On a mission it’s the trenches that devour the true lesson
My mind free from restraint, it wanders off into the world
Like a flock of stray birds flying out for the kill
This is the most vital part, the blue print
It’s the love for all misusage: it’s the essence in the presence
For the music in her heart sang out her true greatness
With a smile hitting each note she was alive with exemption
To love who we are and where we may be going
We must uncage ourselves from worry and step right into thee unknowing
My Idea of Paradise is being amongst it all, the rain, the storm and the creations of awe.
